That's why I never read book reviews.

I only read reviews of *anything* by people I can trust or have known to be accurate. Period.

For example, if had had based my willingness to see a movie based on reviews I read in the local alternative paper, I may have gone to see Made of Honor instead of Iron Man. But I knew that I never agreed with that critic, so...

OK, *now* I'm intrigued. Checking the library for availability now.

I was watching bits of Good Will Hunting on tv last week, and on second viewing I found many of the scenes with him and Damon to be quite painful. Williams really over does it with the already over the top dialogue.
I couldn't disagree more.
Many people here know that I consider Williams' monologue to Damon on the park bench to be one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever.
I still say it was just that monologue that pretty much won them their Oscar.

I don't find Carlin funny now, just bitter. Kaufman I never cared for. I saw a recent Robin Williams standup and he was flat. Not just in comparison to his earlier stuff, he was just flat. Bill Cosby used to be amazing, then he became "America's Dad" and became more pedantic than funny.
We like Tim Minchin. He writes poetry and has cool hair!

Was that the one about him never knowing love because he only loves himself?

That one almost made me barf - and I'm a pretty big softie.

It's just too perfect, like a speech that went through several drafts. I've really been turned off lately by monologues or dialogue that lack the hiccups of real life chat (Kevin Smith take note). Williams comes across like a theatre student in a self-penned one man show.

Well, I've had fellow students attempt to disagree with everything, including foundational stuff that's just a given, usually in art classes. Those need way better regulation where I go to school. "Work on a project involving light and shadow" is just about as pointless a set of directions as possible. "I never would have thought to add a light source... maybe you should teach us about warms and cools, and how to mix color so we know how to approach this... no? Just paint anything as long as there is a light source?''

But I think you need to make the professor like you more than agree with them, and the best way to piss them off is go "See, but you're wrong, and you have bad hair!". There's gotta be a subtle way to disagree other than going "but since I'm just a stupid student and you're the teacher, you're right", which some teachers really like to hear. Because all students are idiots whose first exposure to your field is this class, and nobody has ever held ignorances until an older age nor taught these ignorances to students.

Sorry, I don't know what my point is, but I did not deserve a "b" in that class, or a "c" in that other one... fricken crazy professors.

I'd judge, but lately I've been doing that thing where you pull the first word of a new sentence up a beat, so the pause for the sentence ending happens before the second word of the second sentence. It doesn't always work, but if an author begins sentences with either "and", "but", or a name, it's pretty cool.

Steve Martin and Robin Williams. I get the feeling that it's quite the "in vogue" thing to turn one's nose up and dismiss the both of them as humorless. Maybe these days they aren't. Doesn't matter.

I like to read reviews after I've seen a movie, particularly if I really like it. I love this review of Iron Man - one of the few really well written ones. Plus I agree with almost every word.

Seriously, I swear I've been seeing a good deal of the anti-Martin camp lately.

To this day, Martin has done the one single funniest thing I have ever seen in a stand-up routine, totally spontaneously:

While he was doing one of his banjo bits, he stops for a drink of water. After taking a sip, he holds the glass out to the side at arm's length and says in a commanding tone: "STAY!" then he lets go of the glass. Of course it crashes to the stage and shatters, but Steve just looks at it for a beat and then launches back into his next banjo bit.

It was genius.

Not really. He's just pretentious and quotes the critics he reads without any real understanding of what he's saying. He goes to a fancy prep school, but his family isn't quite as well off as the others so he spends most of his time trying to impress the group he's hanging out with and not quite making it.

I actually like it when my students can come up with a good interpretation that differs with mine or find a flaw in my reasoning, any good argument so long as it's supported by the text. I usually run my classes by soliciting a lot of student opinions and interpretations and promoting cross-talk regarding other's interpretations before offering my own, stepping in only when someone has made a factual error or to keep things on track. In a typical 50 minute class period devoted to discussion of a specific work, I'm happiest when the students are talking about what we've read for at least half an hour of that time.

A student who parrots what I've said in class is unlikely to get an A on an essay or a paper because all that shows is that they can transcribe notes. I want to see what and how they think, not just how well they listen.

From working as a freelancer, I learned to establish the A before exposing myself to the teacher.

I was asked to do a simple paper on the describing the mental health issues raised in one of a number of books, and picked Styron's Darkness Visible because I'd got a copy on the shelf I'd been meaning to get to.

And found that it wasn't depression he was suffering from, but narcissistic personality disorder, and what he needed was a slap. This was precisely the opposite of the answer that was required. Didn't care. The A was already in the basket.

Heh. Isaac Asimov once received a letter complaining that there was never any sex in his stories. His answer was to sit down and write an entire novel that was about nothing but sex and reproduction.

It was an alien species with three sexes, none of which corresponded to the human male or female, but nevertheless did contain an awful lot of detailed descriptions of the reproduction process. Fun book, too.

It was an alien species with three sexes, none of which corresponded to the human male or female, but nevertheless did contain an awful lot of detailed descriptions of the reproduction process. Fun book, too.
The Gods Themselves. Good reading.

Wiki releates my favorite bit

Asimov describes a conversation in January 1971 when Robert Silverberg had to refer to an isotope — just an arbitrary one — as an example. Silverberg said Plutonium-186. "There is no such isotope", said Asimov, "and such a one can't exist either." "So, what?", said Silverberg. Later Asimov figured out under what conditions Plutonium-186 actually could exist, and what complications and consequences it might imply. Asimov reasoned that it must belong to another universe with other physical laws, specifically different nuclear forces would be necessary to allow a Pu-186 nucleus to hold itself together. He wrote down these ideas, which gradually grew into the novel.

For that matter, all the Knauff stuff (with the possible exception of the first arc, which was pretty good, but rough following Extremis) is good as well. The last arc with the Mandarin was fucking brilliant. A perfect mix of the new, dealing with Tony and SHIELD, the Mandarin taking a totally new tack at world domination, and the Extremis virus' potential, with the old, bringing back the standard yellow and red and the Silver Centurion costumes for a victory lap.

Live and learn.

Ever hear The Neilds? More Folkie. They have an awesome song called "Ash Wednesday"

Daddy's on the back porch
playing with a blow torch
standing by the front door
Avon Ladies For the Poor
Meanwhile Mama smiles,
"Get your lover down the aisle
before he's gone"

Lisa says, "Don't cry;
I'll bring you flowers when you die
I'll go to school in only black
or maybe in a gunni sack
I'll get your friends to stand around
and dance upon buried ground
on our front lawn

But don't you worry;
I'm sure she's sorry
and doesn't mean that stuff about the aisle."

Ring around the rosy
a pocket full of posy
ashes, ashes, we all fall down.

The test came back on Tuesday last
right before our pseudo fast;
Lisa said "it's heaven sent--
you can't give ice cream up for lent
Mama said I wouldn't last forty days,
but maybe two

So I spent the day avoiding mother
reading Dr. Joyce Brothers,
reading Where the Wild Things Are
and some of Plath's Bell Jar
Reading Daddy's tax forms
to see if it would be born
on Christmas Day

And I'm not weeping;
I think I'm keeping
a baby who will soon be half my age.

Ring around the rosy
a pocket full of posy
ashes, ashes, we all fall down.

Quitting smoking is a must,
ashes ashes dust to dust
try to turn a new leaf,
giving up pork and beef
Lisa says she'll buy me bras
and maybe I should join a spa
or take Lamaze

It's funny how you never know
exactly when you're asked to grow,
exactly when you take the load
or head up on your own road
Exactly which the day will be--
maybe Ash Wednesday
or Mardi Gras.

So I will change,
'cause I have changed--
time to put these combat boots away.

Ring around the rosy
a pocket full of posy
ashes, ashes, we all fall down.

It's better if you can hear it, but I can't find it online.

Requiring a larger saddle size for when you play my little pony is not what everyone else means by girth.

Hi Ray.

Forgot to mention, we watched Horton Hears A Who last night. Really hilarious and a well done reigned in Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell. Charles Osgood does a pretty good Bela Lugosi impression. We were discussing its merits for my girl's 3 year old niece, I thought the vulture would be a bit scary, she didn't think so. The rest of it is definitely all ages friendly.

I thought Will Arnett did the vulture. In any case, it's the best Dr. Seuss adaptation hands-down. There were a few adult moments (I don't think my 4 year old boy got the Henry Kissinger reference.....), but the performances were rather restrained, thankfully. Whoever directed must have spent a day watching Pixar flicks.

NARRATOR:
A love-struck Romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made.
Finds a streetlight, steps out of the shade
Says something like "you and me babe, how about it?"

Juliet says "hey, it's Romeo, you nearly gave me a heart attack!"
He's underneath the window she's singing "hey la, my boyfriend's back.
You shouldn't come around here singing up to people like that...
Anyway what you gonna do about it?"

ROMEO:
Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start
And I bet when you exploded into my heart
And I forget I forget the movie song.
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

Come up on different streets, both the streets of shame.
Both dirty, both mean, yes in the dream it was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real.
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?

When you can fall for chains of silver,
You can fall for chains of gold,
You can fall for pretty strangers,
And the promises they hold.
You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin, yeah!
Now you just say "oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him".

Juliet, when we made love you used to cry.
You said "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die".
There's a place for us, in all the movie songs.
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

I can't do the talks, like the talk on the TV
And I can't do a love song, like the way it's meant to be.
I can't do everything, but I'll do anything for you,
I can't do anything, except be in love with you!
And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be,
All I do is keep the beat, bad company.
Now all I do is kiss you through the bars of Orien,
Juliet, I'd do the stars with you any time!

Juliet, when we made love you used to cry.
You said "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die".
There's a place for us, in all the movie songs.
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

Warning though.... a good chunk of E.C. (particularly for me in the Tales from the Crypt and Vault of Horror) is pretty repetitive, stale, and pedantic.

There are at least 2 or 3 lame stories to every classic. I personally steer people to the war stuff first, particularly the Kurtzman books, as I think it's mind-blowingly good across the board. Then pick and choose out of the scifi, horror, and suspense categories.

And Mad is dated in places, but the art is fantastic.

Interesting. I did see where Gaines said that they intentionally made every story have an O.Henry ending, but I would guess that would get really repetitive. Have you read any of those 40's crime books, like from Victor Fox or Lev Gleason? Or any of the Romance comics? If so which did you prefer?

Not that I'm necessarily disagreeing with my colleague across the table, but I'll put forth a couple of alternatives.

M.A.R.S. Patrol Total War is pure Wood SF. Now...the stories are deep in 10 year old space opera, but Woody's work is great.

I'm very fond of his work on Valor. Woody had a knack for historic adventure that made this one of the better New Direction books.

I'm also a big fan of Woody's inks over Jack Kirby. Their Sky Masters strip is the gold standard, but their Challengers of the Unknown issues are also great.

And they didn't have hot dogs and pretty candy any more, because that's what poor people eat.

So we went to Bugger King, and they were a dollar more expensive than usual too, and took For EVer.

And then we said screw it, we're here now, and wandered off to the theater, but it was no bigger than a toddler's lunchbox.

And I don't think it was at all unreasonable for me to then set fire to the theater, and lurk outside management's office with a well-honed machete one hand and a half-brick in the other.

Well, I really enjoyed the Dave Michelinie/Bob Layton run back in the eighties (basically Iron Man 120 - 150). From what I know of the movie, this run might be close in terms of the classic Tony Stark. They deal with the alcoholism and personal demons quite a bit, and the Layton art I just automatically think of when I think of Iron Man.

The Extremis story arc was pretty good and that's real recent. I hated the Orson Scott Card series with a passion, though.

The Micheline/Layton run is Demon In A Bottle.

Ah, thanks for informing the willfully underinformed.

Good to see they went and reprinted that. I might have to pick it up now, thanks.

I found a soft cover one well before the movie, but I think the reprints are now in Marvel's Prestige format hardcover, to capitalize on the movie, no doubt.

Shouldn't that apply to all of The Eagles output?

This should be the theme song for Rita's

Last time I was sober, man I felt bad
Worst hangover that I ever had
It took six hamburgers and scotch all night
Nicotine for breakfast just to put me right
cos if you wanna run cool
If you wanna run cool
If you wanna run cool, you got to run
On heavy, heavy fuel

My life makes perfect sense
Lust and food and violence
Sex and money are my major kicks
Get me in a fight I like dirty tricks
cos if you wanna run cool
Yes if you wanna run cool, you got to run
On heavy, heavy fuel

My chick loves a man whos strong
The things shell do to turn me on
I love the babes, dont get we wrong
Hey, thats why I wrote this song

I dont care if my liver is hanging by a thread
Dont care if my doctor says I ought to be dead
When my ugly big car wont climb this hill
Ill write a suicide note on a hundred dollar bill
cos if you wanna run cool
If you wanna run cool
Yes if you wanna run cool, you got to run
On heavy, heavy fuel

Well, "Take It Easy" is pretty upbeat. I'm basically just trying to survive long enough to get to that one.

You should especially get all the Heroes Reborn ones.

Those are great!
damn I said I was going to write these down but did I!!!???

Ray, what Iron Mans would you recommend. As I mentioned earlier I have just read Demon in a bottle and was musing about how comics are way better now, art and writing wise. Anything more current you might suggest?

Apparently, Marvel does not.

As for Demon in a Bottle... I dunno, I think the writing is pretty bad.

The Buggins is lazy, though. She waited till I knocked the bastids down. I swear, most of them were dead long before she slit their throats.

So, note to everyone: Sundance Theaters are poxy, overpriced, and knee-deep in fuqtard entrails. And they are burnt down anyways. So go somewhere else.

Yes, it would be amonf the first places i burn in a riot.

Michelinie is one of the best comic book writers ever, IMHO.

Great guy too - I got the chance to chat with him last month. Layton's a helluva nice guy too.

Unfortunately, I couldn't tell you a thing about any Iron Man comic published post-1994 or so.

well that's OK 'cause I was looking for a counterpoint to the Demon' arc - something current-ish.
