I mean, waking up and going to work.

Last week 2nd shift was laid off and i got conned into working on first shift.

I'm used to getting up and puttering around for a bit, a spot of lunch then off to work. Very causal.

Getting up at 3am, jumping into the shower, dressing and off to work in 15-20 minutes. Eating on the way to work (well i do that sometimes in the afternoon too). Groggy grouchy people for ten hours then back home for dinner and to bed at 7:30-8:30pm...

If i had to do that every day, i would seriously look for another job.

I don't have to get up at three o'clock in the fucking morning, for one.

Why would you have to get up at 3am for first shift? Isn't first shift 7am-3pm?

Or do you live like 3 hours away from your job?

3 AM?

Hell, I'd quit *my* job if I had to get up at 3 AM.

I generally get up for work somewhere between 7:00 and 8:00.

I still don't know how I do it.

I think this varies from place to place. When I worked in a factory that made dairy products, the earliest shift was 2 to 12 (sometimes a little longer), the regular shift was 6 to 5:30 (with an hour unpaid for lunch), and the late shift was 12 to whenever all the work was done (usually around 10, but sometimes longer).

My same question. Traditionally, first shift is 7-3. I've heard of variations, but only an hour either way. Stuff like Grazzt is talking about I never hear anyone refer to specifically as "first shift".

I dunno. No matter what shift I'm working, I get up about an hour before work. I get up all groggy and work my way through it because I have to. I'd rather stay up later than get up earlier.

When my dad was doing factory work, first shift was what is often called "graveyard", the one starting at midnight, the day shift, starting at 8am was second shift, and the evening shift, starting at 4pm was third shift.

I generally get up at about 5am and work from 8 or 9am to 2-4pm, with the exact hours varying depending on my class schedule and office hours and the amount of work I have to get done in the afternoon. For a typical day, I'm gone from about 8 to 5, including commuting time.

I try to give myself a window before I leave for work. I do not get up at 3 am though, ugh. I don't like to jump up, get ready and head out the door. I wake up to my double alarm which consists of a nice, soft jingle from the cell phone and followed shortly by the gurgling from my automatic coffee maker. I get ready, drink coffee, eat breakfast, do a chore or read and then leave for a nice little walk to my bus.

On those days that I choose to sleep in and end up rushing out the door with coffee in hand and no breakfast, I find that those days don't tend to go so well. A relaxing pre-work experience really sets the tone.

As far as the "every day" part. Ugh...I struggle like most people; however, I remind myself that I have a family to support and that usually takes care of that.

I get up at about 6 so I can be at work by 8. I am one of those rare individuals that likes getting up in the morning. The morning is one of my favorite times during the day. Coffee, breakfast, ciggarrette......yummy!

I've been doing a lot of 6 AM shifts lately. I get up between 4:30 and 5:00. I thought I'd get used to it but it isn't happening. Soon I transfer to another location and will mostly work shifts that start at 10:30. Much better.

Wake up at 3 a.m. for first shift? Geez, if I did that I'd have way too much time to kill, since first shift starts at 7 a.m. Though my shift is 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Wake up at 6, take a shower, eat, get ready. Usually 7 by now, and I get ready to go so I can be at work at 8.

Work 8-5.

School 4 days during the week from 6-8:45. Don't get home till almost 9:30. Usually stay up till 11 or 12.

You get used to it.

If you work 4 10 hour days, shifts are 4am-2pm and 2pm-12am. All of our production takes place during these shifts.

If you work 5 8 hour shifts, 6am-2pm, 2pm-10pm and 10pm-6am. Suervisors, mechanics, Process Operators (they run the roaster), Panners (they put the flavor on the sunflower seeds)

Honeslty you get used to getting up early. I am the biggest nightowl you are ever going to meet, but I still get up at 5am to get to work by 5:30. Of coarse only being about 10 minutes from work and being one of those people who just gets up showers and heads out the door helps. The thing is I only ever get up that early when I have to work. I have freinds that have just trined themsleves to be up by no latter than 6am everyday work or not. That sort of thing just never has made sence to me being a person who likes to sleep in when given the chance.

I usually vary on what times I get up. Some days its 6am...some days 7am....maybe even 8am. But my only days off is when the weather is horrible or its a holiday. Mostly work nearly every day I can...except for Sunday.

You know that song was about Rob Thomas' mother's recovery from cancer?

I swear, the pop stars are messing with us.

As far as shifts go, my strong preference would be for second or third.

I wind down about 4a.m., which makes third hard.

But I've never been able to make mornings work for me.

If I DO get to sleep at 8 or 9, I still don't wake up until 10, usually. Or if I do wake up early, I wind up collapsing before noon.

Only place I've ever managed to make a normal day work without feeling like crap was California. My asthma or allergies or whatever are better out there too. (I think it's probably pollen and humidity that get me.)

But my body's definitely wired on pacific time. Either that or somebody's slipping Kryptonite into my coffee on the east coast.

I've never been a morning person and I'm still not, despite waiting up at 5-ish every weekday.

What amuses me is the crazy things my brain does in the morning to try and convince me to stay in bed. Bizarre math equations that say I can sleep two more hours when I really have five minutes, but at 5 am they seem perfectly reasonable.

I liked to wake up early when I lived closer to the country... and there were more people living in the same place I was. Being the first one up (no noise before the birds wake up) and the clear air was so... meditative. Now that I live mostly urban and in my own place right now, and the fact that I can write my own hours at work.. I sleep later.

I do 7 am to 3 pm, first shift. I get up at 5, I like to be alert, have some coffee.
But the best shift I ever worked, 10 am to 6 pm, those were great hours. You had your night free and could stay in bed long enough to get decent sleep!

I write whenever I can. That's my real deal, unfortunately it's not paying the bills @ the moment. I'm waiting to hear about a scripting job, and I've got a number of projects in the works.

The gig that pays the bills, is the one I'm headed to right after I post this: Tele-fundraising. I'm the guy who calls and asks you to support political or philanthropic organizations. Unfortunately I'm good @ it, so they keep me around. The people I work with are pretty cool, though there are a few people I could drop-kick with no guilt. Some of the people we call are amazing, and others should be flogged, just as a daily routine. Evil, evil, evil, and some totally demented. The worst was going through an entire call, having been told the person was going to donate, only to hear, "You've been punked!" before the phone slammed.

If you don't want to donate, that's fine, just say, "I'm not going to donate, goodbye." and then hang up nicely. That's all it takes.

Old Woman: "yes i have"

8: "who might that be?"

OW: "I'm not telling you"

8: (lauging my ass off at this point) i can't argue with your right to privacy, but we do hope you will concider (canidate) when you enter the polls, thank you and have a good day)
