Alright,

I want to get stuck into some GL but haven't a clue where to start.

I've been told to start it a bit before the whole Parallax arc but haven't got a clue how to do that. Does anyone have (or know where there is one) a list of story arcs with issue #s and associated trades and stuff?

Thanks in advance

Hal

The Parallax arc starts with GL #48-50, "Emerald Twilight". I believe there's a TPB that collects it along with the first five issues of Kyle Rayner as Green Lantern, called "Emerald Twilight/A New Dawn". After that the GL trades get somewhat sporadic. There's an "Emerald Allies" trade that collects a Green Lantern/Green Arrow crossover, and there's "Emerald Knights" which collects a six part story where Kyle Rayner teams up with a time displaced Hal Jordan still in his prime.

Technically GL #47 is the story that provides the reason why Emerald Twilight takes place, and it's collected in the "Return of Superman" trade because it was a crossover issue.

You'll also want to pick up "Zero Hour" because it's a Parallax story, and "Final Night" is a sequel.

Ron Marz returned for the final arc of Green Lantern before the Hal Jordan reboot that I'm pretty sure was collected, but I don't know what the title is.

"Ion" follows Kyle Rayner after the Jordan reboot, and it's collected in two volumes.

Then it's "Green Lantern: Rebirth," "No Fear," "Revenge of the Green Lantern Corps," "Wanted," "Sinestro Corps" Vol. 1&2, followed by the yet to be released "Secret Origins" (which is still taking place in the monthly).

Really all you need to get into the current run of Green lantern is Rebirth and Recharge. After that just collect the trade paper backs featuring the current run of GL Corps and Green Lantern.

Right now is a good time to start reading the monthly released GL with the arc thats starting up entitled Secret Origin. Its a good starting point to the series, and it covers Hal Jordan as Green Lantern. The issues start with number 29 which was released about a month ago, so you should still be able to find a copy. I think Geoff Johns is writing it for people who heard about Sinestro Corps War and want to jump on so it seems orientated towards newbies and is setting up the next huge thing: Blackest Night

I believe it was Zero Hour where I stopped collecting. Can I just go straight to the Sinestro Corps and skip Rebirth, Revenge, Wanted, and No Fear? Or are those 4 vital in order to understand what happens in Sinestro Corps?

Didn't Hal kill Sinestro when he went crazy? Broke his neck or something like that. How'd he come back from that?

Green Lantern is easily one of the best traditional superhero-style books out there right now.

Superb writing and art all the way.

100% agree. No knowledge of previous events is needed other than reading a quick recap from Wikipedia about Hal Jordan becoming a douchebag and merging with Spectre. If you enjoy the new GL and GL Corps books, then check out some of the previous history.

It was revealed in "Green Lantern: Rebirth" that the yellow impurity was alive. Sinestro revealed that during his time trapped in the power battery he and the sentient fear known as Paralax talked and hatched a plan that would allow Hal's possession. Hal breaking Sinestro's neck was merely hinted as a construct of Paralax which was to be the final stage before the main possession, and the notion was quickly brushed aside due to Sinestro kicking Ollie's and Kyle's ass in Rebirth #04. Sinestro orchestrated all this in order to discredit Hal and pay the Corps in kind. Lately it's been shown that Sinestro still holds a deep respect and affection for the Green Lantern Corps and everything his done has been to the betterment and future improvement of the Corps. Price be damned.

You can absolutely skip all of that and just jump into Sinestro Corps. That's where I started out and it totally sucked me in, even having absolutely NO prior knowledge of Green Lantern history.

Really, if you have the time, patience, and money I'd recommend starting with Green Lantern (vol 2) #1 and take it all the way up to current issues. This is the way I got into GL and I'm glad I did. It's true there are those "crucial" stories like Rebirth and Emerald Twilight, but GL was always a really entertaining read, so all those other stories factor in greatly as to why we like GL!

Personally I would wait until they put together the Absolute Sinestro Corps War, once that's out, you'll sell your soul for it. Probably the greatest sci-fi comic (story-arc) to ever grace the pages of comic continuum.

Agreed. Actually stole the words out of my mouth (fingers?).

Since then, I've backtracked a bit for fun when I've got a few extra bucks, and it's true there are some great stories out there. But, to start off for now, check out Sinestro Corps and head forward.

You should check out this thread:

The short version seems to be a toss up between starting with Rebirth and going through until now (you'll get some great stories, but there a lot of spending there) or just picking up from Sinestro Corps (cheaper option, and the option I took, but you do miss some real nice stories from before -- though you can always backtrack later on)

Option 3, of course, is to jump into GL right now, in the middle of Secret Origin. Downside to this is, you miss out on the color spectrum of rings stuff that seems to play a big role in the upcoming stories (that's all from Sinestro Corps).
