Why is it that everytime someone hits the Powerball (or Mega Millions or whatever), it ends up being 99% of the time old white people that don't really need the money. Just one time, I'd like to see that kind of money go to somebody that will actually do something good with it, or somebody whose fixing to lose their house or something.
Just a stray thought that I had while I was at work today...

What are you talking about? I've seen younger win the thing. You don't see them as much because media either loses interest or they keep a low profile and accept it anonymously.

We had a Seargent win it not too long ago, and he opted to still deploy to the sandbox despite it giving him enough income to receive a discharge.

exactly. I mean one dude, not, young, but not elderly, won a big one twice!
There was some show on discovery or History or something that followed some of the winners, and what they did. There was also a notorious one that followed the unhappy things that happened to some big winners who ended up in jail and becoming drug users and losing everything, or being murdered and all.
I have to say, the one thing that I DO notice, at least in New York lotteries, is that the winners do come from mostly low-income areas. I get the feeling that the way the lottery is skewed, is to have the numbers (preset games) end up more in areas where they are bought often (obvious) but also in areas where they may feel that like moonlight is saying, that the winner will not live very long, therefore, making the payout less. I'm not sure if this is a social thing (low income people playing more) or just a luck thing,

(Off topic) I've decided to post more often in the Comm board section. So here begins the promise. Who cares...

It's just a personal observation. Maybe when younger people do win, they use a lawyer and set up a trust or whatever to claim their winnings, but I've never really seen anybody, let's say 30 or younger, show up on the news and claim it . Or anybody really down and out (at least here in Louisiana)

I've seen some of those shows, it's intresting to see what some people do with their financial windfall. Just thinking that when you're in your retirement years and you win something of that nature and don't really need it, they would do something better for their communties or give it to charities. But then again it's their money to do whatever they want with it.

Because the people featured on the news winning the lottery are the ones who consent to being featured on the news.
Personally, if I ever win any significant money playing the lottery, I plan to accept it with as little fanfare as possible because otherwise I'd just become a target for every single charity/scam/greedy relative that doesn't really care about me/con artist/etc out there.

Simplest answer? It doesn't. Lotteries have been around for over 30 years in most states. There are big winners many times in a year. That an incredibly large number of winners and you've just happened to notice that type. I, personally, have mostly seen it go to working class folks who are happy to quit their jobs. I never noticed any kind of preponderance of "old white people who don't need the money". I would be willing to be that, if researched, it's probably a very wide variety of types of people that win it.
