Man can Starlin write an epic space series. If the other seven issues of this series are as good as this, this will be the best event this summer. We see the Thanagarians worshinping the Church of Eternal Light. The Rannians are worshipping Lady Styx. My favorite character Hawkman "Carter Hall" has a large role. Comet, tells the JLA that humans will destroy earth in 20 years so no alien races care to invade, they will just pillage when there is no longer any resistance. Just when you thought it couldn't get any better we end up on Throneworld which has been virtually destroyed by none other than Bizarro. Knowing he can't match Bizarro's strength Starman befriends a lost Bizarro and offers to feed him. Back on Earth Strange reunites with Starfireand Animal Man convincing them to come to Rann to help with the pending Holy War. Comet refuses to answer Adam Strange's calls for help because he knows Strange always gets involved in problems that Comet at a risk for death and he wants to avoid that. The whole issue ends with a Church of Eternal Light member strapping a suicide bomb to his chest and attempting to blow up Comet on Hardcore.
Phew, so much happened int his issue and it was just issue one! I am much more excited for this than Final Crisis or Secret Invasion. Did nyone enjoy this as much as I did?

I enjoyed the issue insofar as it was a setup for what's to come, but I did find it odd that Chief Max referred to the incident with Synnar as taking place 15 years ago. Hardcore Station came out in '98, and given that the JLA (then Superman, Orion, Batman, Kyle Rayner, the Flash, Wonder Woman, and J'onn J'onnz, IIRC) had a prominent role in the last two issues, I'm wondering at the continuity. Because I'm a nitpicker that way.

Maybe Hardcore years are really short...?

I really enjoyed the 1st issue as well. I really enjoy Ron Lim's artwork. I am excited to see the all of these characters. I really wish DC would do something about the Will Payton / Prince Gayvn merger. I really hate that. Can't they just bring back Will and Gayvn and have them go by to separate codes names. I also wish the would keep the Captain with Captain Comet. The story seem to do a really good job setting everything up.
Does anyone else miss Will Payton? Is anyone else disappointed with Adam Strange going back to his original costume?
Can't wait to read more of this series.
Has anyone seen a version of the Ron Lim variant cover for this issue? I haven't been able to find it. If so could someone post a pic?

Thought it was a good first issue, too. Set all the characters up in a nice succinct manner, while gradually setting the plot in motion. I also miss Strange's new costume, though. I thought the reintroduction of his old threads in Countdown to Adventure was situational at best, and fully expected for it to be a temporary thing until I saw the cover to this in the solicits a few months back. I was still holding out hope that it wouldn't actually appear in the pages, but no such luck I guess.
Anywho, good start and looking forward to seeing how it develops. Already a huge improvement over Starlin's Death of the New Gods, in my opinion; closer to the quality of his Mystery In Space, which is what I was hoping for. Looking forward to #2.

I'm glad to see there were others that enjoyed the issue besides myself. I really liked the humor in this series, especially the Prince Gavyn/ Bizarro interactions. I didn't know how Bizarro was to be used, but I'm excited that Starman's attempting to use Bizarro as an advantage for the "greater good." This miniseries is a breath of fresh air in comparison to the other DC mini I've been reading, Countdown to Mystery. While the latter mini started out well, it's really dragging the proverbial feet towards the end. Considering the head writer of that said mini passed away prior to finishing the mini-series, I'm not expecting too much in the last issue.
To keep on topic, I like that this series focuses on characters that are not touched upon so much in other current DC ongoing series at the moment. I guess, in those respects, it feels like that "52" kind of storytelling.
I also like the religious elements of the story, as it resembles organized religions or cults (in some cases) in real life. I doubt the religious part will be focused on as much, just the Lady Styx stuff I'm guessing.
I guess the only complaint I have is that there's so many sets of characters involved in this story that it seems like 8 issues will have to be packed to get through the story. Then again, I don't mind that it's only 8 issues, keeping it to the quality of the story and not dragging anything out (hopefully).
I know many people didn't enjoy the "Rann-Thanagar" tie-in from Infinite Crisis, but I enjoyed it, and it included some of the characters involved here: Hawkman, Adam Strange, Prince Gavyn, Tigorr, and Captain Comet (technically, since it was the older one in the earlier mini).
I need to finish up on Countdown to Adventure, because I'm curious as to why we're not seeing Forerunner, Golden Eagle, & their crew in this miniseries.
I'm glad that Starlin is writing this, considering his previous works, especially the latest Mystery in Space run.
The Lady Styx stuff works well here, especially works for those who read the last Omega Men miniseries. I'm peeved that her appearance possibly means the (off-camera) death of Felicity/ Nimbus.
The only character I'm unfamiliar with is the policeman character & his history in the DCU.
Anyway, the first issue has convinced me enough to buy into this miniseries.

Can anyone tell me who the suicide bomber was or was it just a random religous zealot? Also, can someone provide me with some background on the police character too please. Thank You!

Just a random zealot, I think. The police character is Chief Justice Max, the Max whom Comet was meeting for lunch (they're friends). He was the lead character in Hardcore Station (the Synnar run-in he alludes to) and a supporting character in Mystery in Space, both by Starlin. Max works for the corporation that governs the station. Haven't read Hardcore Station, so that's about all I know.

I didn't even realize that the Omega Mew were involved until I read it. Which is silly, since Tigorr is right there on the cover
Still, he only got one page, which kinda sucked. The Teen Titans got a cameo as long as Tigorr's apperance.
Still, good to see them in action again. It been a while. Now if only LEGION gets involved it might be the best mini of the year.

I like this alot and think it has great potential as a series that will be off the beaten track and still pretty entertaining. At first, when I saw the cover and the big mix of characters I thought there would be no way to make them all work. But I was wrong, it really worked. Looking forward to more issues.

Thanks, it is probably time to go back and read Mystery in Space. That was a great series probably worth a refresher before I read issue 2 of this series.

I can't wait for the second issue to come out. I so glad DC has Starlin giving these characters some love. The really need to breath some life into DC's cosmic landscape.

This issue seemed fairly bland. It looked nice and it established the overall plot and where the characters fit in, I guess, but it seemed to lack something.
Maybe it's just a standard preliminary issue.

This is how Rann/Thanagar War should've been. This is an improvement judging by this issue alone (though Ivan Reis' pencils would've been even better). I'm not familiar with Ron Lim's work. It'll grow on me.

I concur with the poster above who mentioned STrange's uniform. Th new one kicked much ass, especially the hard light guns. Maybe Ron Lim didn't know about it?
Also, in regards to Captain Comet, when someone calls hm simply :Comet", does anyone else look around for the super-horse?

Maybe he'll chance his name to Captain and team up with Comet the Super Horse.
