Supposedly due to the production of methane. Yep, cow farts and cow shit. In this day and age of industrial production of food, cows are feed corn (corn has its tentacles in everything), which they are not "designed" to digest (they are ruminants; they have 4 stomachs in order to digest grass); amongst other things, they must be injected with antibiotics, and their colons produce a lot of methane.
This being only an Internet message board, don't quote me.

I suspect that the burning of the Amazon rain forest to create pasture land for cows has something to do with it, too.

I don't remember the numerical specifics, but I recall some vegan litereature from College which broke down energy and water consumption for the different meats vs. tomatoes. Beef requires more fuel per pound than the rest, by far. Something to the tune of 5 times as much water, and 25 times as much land and energy than tomatoes, with the proportions Grant reports between meats being roughly accurate.
Their whole shtick was "go vegan!" of course, but same info...

Except now they're cutting to the chase and just stripping out the rain forest so they can plant corn rather than graze cattle, since they can now make more money off the corn itself.
I don't know nuthin' 'bout this corn-fed cow methane, since I only buy beef from grass-fed cows...

Coleman? Maverick?
Who is the tall, dark stranger there?
I have no idea what you're talking about. Are those grass-fed beef companies? This is the wild west, there are dozens of those out here...

Here in the East, there aren't; those are the two most prominent out here (Coleman in particular specializes in cattle who graze at high elevations, theoretically, over the "pollution line". Maverick's claim to fame is its use by the American Olympic Committee (they call the brand, "Gold Medal Beef". Sounds like something from THE APPRENTICE).
