I'm going to give the DCU a try so I was wondering which titles out there are your top five. Just make sure that you include at least one team book and only one Batman and Superman title (no point in using up the five slots with the same character).

My favorite read at the moment would be Booster Gold. Very fun book - fun story, fun characters, twists and turns...what else could you want.
Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps have never been better. Pick up the Sinestro War trade if nothing else for some quality reading.
I don't know why, but I'm strangely enjoying Azul Beetle lately. Started off rather slow, but it gained my interest. I'd recommend this if you want to have a sleeper read that catches up with you for no apparent reason.
After that you can fill in a Trinity title of your own choice. I actually enjoy reading about non-Trinity characters more. Dunno why.

Off the top of my head:
Blue Beetle - Last story was awesome

Teen Titans - Consistently been good (imho)
Nightwing - Surprisingly interesting seening Nightwing on his own
Green Lantern - Always been a big fan, wish the stories could be a little better, but very excited over the new lanterns

Batman RIP is coming up so you'd probably want to start checking that out....
Green Lantern is always often so definitly pick that up....
Geoff Johns plus anything is always good so I'd also suggest Action...
IMO Wonder Woman has been really awsome as of late...
This one's kinda out there but I've been really feelin Robin since Dixon took over...
This a very controversial one but I've been loving it for the past few issues so give Teen Titans look and decide if it's for you...
Best of luck man

If I may recommend one other thing. Stay away from the weeklies, DC or Marvel. They just don't seem worth it. And if you do want those, buy them in trade.

Heck, anything by Geoff Johns works right now.

For a good sampling of recent DC gems, check out these trades as well:
Blue Beetle, Gotham Central, Manhunter and Shadowpact. All New Atom might also be cool for you but it's an acquired taste.

Detective Comics -- Great one-shot stories that epitomize Batman rather than trying to change him or shake him up with some expansive drawn out story arc.
Nightwing -- Fantastic characterization. Dick feels like the most human hero out there, full of immense strength and immense vulnerability at the same time, still just begining to discover his potential.
Legion of Superheroes -- Great characterization from the legend that first made the team amazing. Add to that a really engaging continuity with lots of interesting stuff happening rather than one finite and forced plotline.
All-Star Superman -- I'm very off and on with this title, but Morrison really nails it often enough to make this worthwhile. The better stories call to mind the classic depiction of the goody-goody Superman while still managing to make him compelling and keeping the stories fresh and interesting without a hint of formula.
Justice Society of America -- Personally, I don't care much for this title, but it seems to be just about everyone else's favorite.

My favorite 5 right now are.
-Legion of Super-Heroes
- Wonder Woman
- Green Lantern Corps (I just went and bought the last 5 issues today, and I loved it.)
- JSA
- Green Lantern
Even though this mini just ended I would suggest picking up Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters. Someone suggested it to me, and I ended up buying both mini series, and loved them.

2. Legion of Superheroes
That's pretty much it for me. I would have recommended Checkmate, but with Bruce Jones as the new writer I dropped the title.
Jonah Hex sounds good and I will eventually be picking up the trades but I can't recomend it sight unseen (same for Booster Gold).

1. Detective (one trinity book) One shots, consistently good( occasionally, unbelievably great)
2. JSA (superhero team) The original superhero team at that, the heroes in this book are quirky, cool and feel human.
3. Combine the 3 other titles prices and buy a trade of 52 every month. This book was my first leap into DC continuity( alongside Infinite Crisis and Identity Crisis, which came before this.)

DC is in a bit of a state of flux now, with some creative changes going on or near. So it's hard to say. Also, they are at the VERY beginning of a new mega-event (two if you count "Trinity"), so again its hard to pin down what certain titles will be like when things get rolling on that.
With that warning, I'll still try.
1.) Trinity - We haven't actually SEEN this yet, but based on the talent doing it and what we know of the cast of characters (the so-called "big 3" of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman)? It seems a better bet than most.
2.) Wonder Woman - Good for the first time in a LOT of years. Actually more than good now.
3.) Green Lantern - Like WW, the best the book has been in a long, long time.
4-5.) Some combination of the Bat-books.
Runner up.) All Star Superman (if you don't get both Bat books)
What WOULD have been on my list a mere 6 months ago:
1.) Birds of Prey - has had creative changes since then
2.) Checkmate - has had creative changes since then
3.) Blue Beetle - the talent was being juggled around even then
4.) Shadowpact - has had creative changes since then
Books that I'm SURPRISED are actually decent now... but I'm not yet in a fully trusting place:
1.) Nightwing - its been a book of EPIC awfullness for SO long its hard to trust that its good. For now.
2.) Booster Gold - I don't love it as wholeheartedly as some, but I am cautiously optimistic.
3.) Green Lantern Corps - For a "flip side"/B side of a franchise, its pretty damn good.
Avoid:
1.) Any title that currently has "Titans" in the title.
2.) Infinity Inc. - a confusing mess
3.) Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters - which had a GOOD run about a year ago, but IMO this year's run SUCKS. This may not be a big problem though since I think the limited run of this is almost over.

I personally like a lot of the titles from DC, but the top 5 that I would recommend are:
1) Justice Society of America- This is a great team book that has ties to so many other heroes that your bound to get your fix of the whole DCU in this one title alone! Plus, Cyclone and Starman are awesome!
2) Birds of Prey- This would seem like a "Charlies Angels" themed book, and hell, it kinda is, but what it also is, is great! The characters are all so fleshed out and I dare you to not care about them after just one arc!
3) Green Lantern or Green Lantern Corps- Either one is gonna give you a great look at the scope of the space side of the DCU. Also, with the upcoming "Blackest Night" event, these are going to be the hottest titles on the market when the multicolored poo hits the fan!
4) Action Comics- Superman is bad-@$$, and when your combine that with the Legion of Super-Heroes storyline that just wrapped up, (WHICH YOU SHOULD GO BUY RIGHT NOW!), you can't go wrong with this title! A Superman title should be on everyone's pull list!
5) Legion of Super-Heroes- This title is very, and I mean VERY intimidating to get into, what with all the background and reboots, but when you can finally wrap your mind around all that mythology and accept it, this is the best "teen" title from DC. Teen Titans used to be, but it's been nothing but deja vu since that Titans East storyline, and with them using nothing but, imo, boring characters, this is where you'll get your moneys worth!*
To anyone that wants to start that trek into the deep unknown that is the DCU, these titles would make for one great guide!
*To add to the LoSH, you REALLY need to pick up Legion of Three World, even if you don't pick up Final Crisis! PICK IT UP!!!

I've limited my recommendations to on going titles. You tie our hands with only 5 books and a must on Superman/ Batman and a team titles, but here are my suggestions (in no particular order).
Jonah Hex
Catwoman
Blue Beetle
Brave and the Bold
Superman/Batman (should be World's Finest)
The Superman/ Batman should fulfill a requirement and I've consistently enjoyed these stories.
The Brave and the Bold is a great book, though not a team book it is a team-up book. I choose to see this as the same thing and since you can impose no punishment I proceed.
The remaining three are consistently enjoyable and for 24+ issues each. If you want to remain in "present time" DC then substitute Birds of Prey for Jonah Hex. I've enjoyed these characters and stories for quite some time, even after Gail Simone left.
Booster Gold is a favorite of mine too, but I believe Johns is planning to leave soon, so I'm fearful of what may come next.

1. Wonder Woman. Gail Simone. Aaron Lopresti. 'Nuff said. (Did I mention Gail Simone?)
2. Blue Beetle. DC's most consistently enjoyable book for the past two years. I hope the new creative talent doesn't screw it up.
3. Booster Gold. DC's best new book of the past year.
4. Justice Society of America and Justice League of America. Two dramatically different takes on a similar theme, each interesting in its own way.
5. Legion of Super-Heroes. I miss Barry Kitson's gorgeous artwork, but Jim Shooter's scripting has made the Legion fun again.
Runner-up: Green Arrow and Black Canary. I know a lot of people despise Judd Winick's writing, but I thoroughly enjoy what he's done with these characters (Ollie's an all-time favorite) and their little superhero family.
Go back and read: The just-concluded Suicide Squad miniseries. Anytime John Ostrander is writing new Suicide Squad stories, life is good.
Looking forward to: Trinity. I'm not a big fan or either Clark or Bruce, but anything to get more Diana every month.

Interesting that Green Lantern has so many more votes than Green Lantern Corps - I consider them of equal quality, and actually enjoy the variety of characters in the corps book more.
Also interesting to note that JSA is the second highest rated (in this informal poll at least) while JLA sits with one vote. What do you think should change about JLA to make it JSA level quality?

1. JSA: Easily the best team book on the market right now. Despite a big cast of characters, Johns manages to give each hero their own voice, and Eaglesham makes each character look distinct. The stories are pretty dense, so you get a good read for your money. The book is steeped in continuity, but still accessible and easy to follow. This would be a good intro to the DCU and it's history. There's currently 3 HC books out which should enable you to catch up pretty quickly.
2. Green Lantern: DC's best solo title. GL has been a stand out book since Rebirth. The current storyline is a retelling of Hal Jordan's origin, so this might be a good jumping-on point. If you like what you see, it won't be hard to catch up with trades. Plus, you'll get to read the Sinestro Corps War, easily one of the best event stories in years. Ivan Reis provides quality artwork every issue.
3. Blue Beetle: An excellent teen hero book and instantly accessible. The book has been getting better and better with each issue. It really takes off after issue 6, so be warned that the first few issues, while good, aren't indicative of the series as a whole. Once again, it shouldn't be too hard to get up to speed with the trades.
4. Manhunter: DC's most underrated book. A strong, character-driven series featuring one of the best female protagonists in comics. Constant compelling storytelling and an excellent supporting cast make this a great read. It's on hiatus at the moment but will be starting up again very soon, so this is a good opportunity to check the series out.
5. For your Batman book, I'd recommend Detective: Paul Dini is keeping it simple. Done in one stories make this an easy book to jump into. If you like an intelligent, crime solving Batman, this is the book for you.

For a team book I'd recommend Legion of Superheroes by Jim Shooter since it's been pretty good lately but that's going for 6 titles so just swap it with Booster Gold then but then again I think BG is better than Legion. Morrison's stuff is hit and miss for me although his arc with J.H. Williams was great and most of the issues he did with Andy were pretty decent. I expect his book to get better as RIP begins.

I currently can't really afford comics until I get out of this over-expensive apartment (grrrr), but trying to go by the OP's criteria, here's what's still on my radar and stuff I look forward to getting back into once I can.
One "Trinity" book: I pretty much hate Batman so he's right out. I'm a big Superman nerd so I might get the full platter of his books again. I'll miss Busiek on Superman but look forward to James Robinson taking over as he seems to be a well-respected writer in the field. I like Geoff Johns writing but there's just something about the Legion that infuriates me that I can't explain. If they're still a big part of his Action Comics, I'll pass. All-Star Superman is quality but has an irregular schedule and is almost completed as it's a finite series. So ironically, I'd say Wonder Woman is the title I'm most confident is kicking ass currently since Gail Simone is a wonderful writer and I've enjoyed everything I've ever read by her.
One team book: I want to like Justice League of America but what I read before having to take a break from comics was honestly really flat and inconsequential to much of anything; and the fun factor didn't make up for that. Justice Society of America by Geoff Johns is a wonderful title with heart, humor, and honest to god superheroes. Honorable mention to Teen Titans but only because I really enjoy Miss Martian and Ravager. I've heard mixed reviews on the new writer's take though.
Before my forced break, I was HYOOGE into Blue Beetle but with Rogers leaving the writing helm I am nervous that the new guy might not live up to my enormous lurve for the series. Similarily, I was just getting into Checkmate and now I hear that Rucka's out. Birds of Prey was much fun under Simone but hasn't really done much to grab my attention back since she left and I dropped it to open space on the pull list. I'd say I have the most fondness for Blue Beetle here and will give it another go.
Of the upcoming announced DC projects Final Crisis and Trinity are going to get the most press and attention. Batman's inclusion in Trinity has potential to irritate me inspite of liking Busiek's writing. Final Crisis being DC's next big event makes it important but overall, I just really don't connect with the DCU's cosmic multiversal epics. The recently announced Power Girl series is going to look great thanks to Amanda Connor but I'll reserve judgment on Palmiotti and Gray's writing of her until I see it. So the project I'm most %110 stoked for is Secret Six by Simone and Nicola Scott. Villains United rocked, the Secret Six mini rocked my socks off, and this too shall rock. So psyched.
Left overs not already mentioned: The only Batman appearance I'll tolerate is Batman and the Outsiders because it used to have Martian Manhunter and now has Batgirl. A new Batgirl mini is supposedly in the works but it's by Beechen, the guy who wrote her so poorly in Robin's first One Year Later arc. Booster Gold is alright even though it's just simple fan-wank for old school fans. I know I should be onboard with Green Lantern but something about Hal Jordan just bugs me and random letters strung together to create names for wacky looking aliens in Green Lantern Corps is kind of "meh". But I will give that Sinestro Corps War was well done and I expect Blackest Night to be no different. The art in Green Arrow Black Canary by Cliff Chiang is just gorgeous to mine eyes. I wish they had stuck with Connor Hawke though as I find him more interesting than his pops. Oh well.
So I'd say:
Wonder Woman
Justice Society of America
Blue Beetle
Secret Six (upcoming)
and... Superman, I guess.

Okay, so I totally forgot, and I don't know how, my #1 favorite title.
CHECKMATE
This book is like a mind game that leaves you wanting to go another round! I love the characters and the fact that there isn't a "superhero" of the traditional sense in the book maybe off-putting, but it's also what makes this a great book because it proves that a book doesn't need a big name to headline it! I loved the Outsiders, and still do, but frankly, it's just a revamped "reunion" of the old roster from the first series! Now, I'm not dogging on it, because I still pickup the occational trade, but I wish that Batman didn't need to be the focus of another book. He's DC's Wolverine! I mean, how many books can he be in and a company still be able to keep track of continutiy! Okay, I'm ranting, which was not the point of this post. Praising Checkmate was. So please, go but one trade, and catch the Checkmate fever!!!

Let's see...
1. Booster Gold - My favorite DC title right now. The first tpb just came out.
2. Blue Beetle - Just had a creative change, but the first three tpbs are awesome.
3. Manhunter - Best female solo female protagonist in the big two.
4. Teen Titans Year One - I love the art, and the story is so much more fun than the current running series.
5. Wonder Woman - a bit slow going at first (but its hard to blame the title for that considering it had to clean up the mess that was Amazons Attack), but some of the promo stuff I've seen on the upcoming storylines looks really cool.

Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps... Really the only DC titles I've religiously collected over the past two years. Don't let people fool you. Corps is just as good as GL, if not better. Hal Jordan can sometimes be a boring character, it's fun to add some flavor with Guy Gardner and the rest of the Corps. Recommend you buy some of the past issues first to get caught up, including Green Lantern Rebirth mini-series.
Batman.... But only because of the upcoming R.I.P. event. Grant Morrison has been hit and miss with some of his recent Batman work. I've enjoyed the heck out of some, and meh'd others. But this new event looks like it will be something to read! Recommend you buy a few of GM's earlier stuff on Batman just to get caught up on Damian and some other key events.
Trinity... No previews, no word of mouth, all I know is I freaking loved the Trinity Mini-Series and if this one is only a fraction as good, it will be a great read. Superman/Batman started off pretty strong, so I'm hoping the same for Trinity. It starts soon so you'll be able to read from #1.
My wildcard.... The Titans. I'm a big fan of the Titans. I like the early George Perez work, I liked the rebith of the New Teen Titans. I'm hoping this brings back some of those great moments. The first issue wasn't earth-shattering, but it wasn't bad at all. I expect at least a few great moments in the early issues. It just started too, so you'll be able to pick up fast.
A lot of peeps have recommended Booster Gold and I don't think it's a bad choice, but I've been a big Booster/Beetle fan since the JLI days and I feel like this series hasn't managed to reach its potential. I mean... c'mon a shallow time travelling superhero who can go back to any great moment in DC history... the possibilities are endless. The one where he travels back to The Killing Joke was probably the best issue I read, but I expected that out of all of them. I'm still giving it a whirl, but I'm disappointed.

1. Action Comics - Geoff Johns carefully plans out the stories long-term so you don't have any "throw away, filler" issues. Everything means something.
2. Green Lantern - SEE ABOVE
3. Justice Society of America - SEE ABOVE AGAIN
4. Batman - the flagship title for Batman and has the best pencils right now
5. Brave and the Bold - just starting a new arc. the first lasted 12 issues and featured just about anyone you can think of in the DCU. Very well planned story with great art.

2. JSA
3. Batman or Detective (depending on if you prefer Morrison or Dini; I like both)
4. Booster Gold
5. Wonder Woman.
Also;
Both other Superman books are great right now, as are Green Lantern and The Brave & the Bold. Blue Beetle, Spirit, and Atom were great, but are changing/just changed writers; I think the same may be true for Shadowpact if it continues past the current story arc. Checkmate was great, but Bruce Jones is taking over, so that's that. Manhunter was good, but is still on hiatus. I've only read 1 issue of Jonah Hex I got out of a cheap box, but it was very good.

The only DC title I currently read is Superman/Batman and I'm kinda getting tired of it. I mean it's cool to see their relationship and how they work together and know each other so well but Supes just had his mind jacked for like the billionth time. I just need a lil' mo variety from DC.

"manhunter"
I would take this into consideration people. Marc sent me something to catch up on Manhunter for free and it was great. Enjoyed it, going to finish picking up the trades when I get the chance, and he signed it for me as well.
Plus now that I have his address....mwahahahaha.....
Thanks again Marc

Manhunter. Not just 'cause marc andreyko was cool enough to offer a starter pack. He's offering the freebies 'cause he knows he can hook you. The writing really is that good.
JSA The best team book out there. Trumps everything that Marvel has to offer.
Wonder Woman While I love Lopresti's artwork, it's the combination of artist and writer (sweet Gail) that makes this book click. And, man, does it click.
Booster Gold The quirky good ones never seem to last. Enjoy the goodness while you can.
Checkmate Just because it's fun.
