Hey I just became a proud owner of a PS3. It's a very late christmas gift cause I took too long deciding if I wanted a PS3 or 360. But I'm too big of a FF fan to let FF13 pass me by.

So I've been reading up on "achievements", or trying to, but there's a lack of info on them.

Can someone explain them to me. I know not every game has them but do you have to be hooked up to the internet to see that you have unlocked them became I'm not online with it yet.

And can anyone tell me of a site that has games and their achievements and what you have to do to unlock them?

I just don't want to play through GTA4 and Iron Man only to have to beat them again because I wasn't online at the time and I couldn't get my achievements.

I don't think PS3 has achievements like the 360 do. (Though it's called skill points) Resistance is the only game that does. (As far as I heard but I don't really know)

Yeah, they dont really have 'em. Which is one of the reasons I always buy the 360 version of titles, I loves me some achievments. They add a lot of fun a re-playability. Its like built in mini games.

Sony really needs to implement something like Xbox's system, it's incredibly popular.

Well I know that once Home comes out they said that the achievements in the game will turn into trophies that can be displayed inside your avatars home.

This of course is going to be a ways off since it keeps getting pushed back.

So no PS3 games have built in achievements in them yet besides Resistance?

Having owned both, I've come to the following conclusions:

The Xbox 360 is the better system. It is more user-friendly, it's live setup is more accessible and better implemented, and loading and installation times are shorter. There is no graphical difference that I can see.

The PS3, on the other hand, has a better selection of games, in my opinion. It also has a better controller - the sixaxis rocks. Also, it does not seem to be vulnerable to hardware failure such as the Red Ring of Death.

There's no achievement system overall as of yet but really more like in-game achievements. For example, Devil May Cry 4 has the in-game achievements. Don't quote me on this but I think you DO have to be connected to the Internet to get the achievement recorded onto your game. I know I gained an achievement in the game but my connection was dead and it didn't record. As soon as my connection came back it finally recorded.

Many gamers praise the Achievement System because it gives you a sense of accomplishment for completing certain tasks and missions within the game. But what exactly are you truly accomplishing with these Achievements? Sadly, the answer is nothing. So why do gamers go out of their way and make sure that they accomplish every achievement possible in a title, when completing the game doesn't offer the gamer anything new? Is it for bragging rights among friends or just to show other gamers on Live that you completed a lot of games? Honestly, is beating games like TMNT or King Kong really that hardcore? Or does some stranger in another state or country really care if you got something unlocked? Really no one cares though.

Dont worry it will be all resolved for your ps3 when Home comes out for it, it got pushed back a little bit and was re-unveiled recently and few screen shots I saw looked pretty cool and youll be able to not only unlock achievement but also be able to have like display cases for them and such. It sounds cool but like the microsoft version, its wasted time for me. If I play a game and like it enough to do so again it wont be because of some achievement, it will be because I like the game. Id rather spend my playing time playing something new than retreading some other game just to be able to say I shot out all the security cameras in this level of a game.

It's sad. I know. I mean, sure, for the hell of it, I sometimes collect achievements provided they're not impossible or ridiculous to get. Example: Hosting 1,000 matches.

I always thought that the achievement system is pointless. Seriously, why should I bust my ass completing a task for points and get nothing out of it? It would be great to use those points to purchase something in the marketplace. Atleast that would give me some incentive to do them. As it is achivements are completely meaningless

What's hilarious is that in some games, like Phantasy Star Universe and King Kong, you only get achievements by completing levels. So basically all you have to do is beat the game to get 1,000 points. No finding secrets, beat the boss within a certain limit, or kill this many V-Rexes. What's the point of it if you don't have to worry about looking for secrets? (I guess I shouldn't use the word "point")

So is the achievement system/points for the 360 just there to say, "you unlocked the ____ and are awarded # of points" ? And thats all it is? Can other gamers on Live see your achievements or is it just saved on the opening menu for that one person?

If so I can see how that would be a waste. I can't wait for Home though, that would make it more worthwhile to unlock achievements. But I'm with most of you if it's a game that I either love playing or something that wouldn't be hard to unlock I wouldn't mind replaying it for achievements. Or if I'm competing with a close friend. And with Home coming soon you'd get trophies so that's more motivation. But just to have unusable points wouldn't be that motivating to do anything.

Supposally, (and this is just a rumor I heard from the guy at GameStop) they'll add something so you can use your gamerscore points like Mircosoft points. But not exactly.

Devil May Cry 4 and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune do. These are just game specific, though. As mentioned in other posts, when Home is released, game achievements will be able to be displayed in the gamer's virtual environment as trophies for other gamers to view.

They're in there. You can also see how your rank on each level compared to other players.

I know a lot of people think chasing achievement points is a silly waste of time and only for those who want something sad to brag about, but I know that's not it for me at least.

I love achievements. For me, they add fun little asks to strive for in-game and they provide me excuses to re-play my games. I think of them like mini games, after I beat a level, let's say, it's fun to go back through and do it in a certain amount of time, or kill a certain number of enemies, in order to unlock an achievement.

Even if it involves "busting my ass", that's even better. Then it's a challenge to try and break  The completion of the task IS the reward.

I know about the ranking thing. I just didn't know the game has achievements.

So you would actually host 1,000 matches only to earn 20 points? You're a badass.

It's still a waste of time though. I only try and get them when there's nothing to do. Most people think achievements whores are losers 'cause that's all they're after. To me, that's only true if they buy almost every game there is, get the achievements, and not play them anymore. What's the point in playing then of all you're doing is getting achievements?

(And I hope I wasn't talking about you. I'm speaking in general)

I have a friend who's a major achievement whore and he'll play any 360 game solely for achievements. He doesn't have the money to buy every game but he'll rent and borrow any game he can. He'll sink low enough to rent Barbie games and similar crap just for the achievements. I kid you not!

Yeah, as far as I know they are exactly the same as the ones on the 360. Other than earning them, I don't think you get anything, though. There aren't any points assigned to them.

On the topic of Achievements:

Someone at work once said Achievement have killed video games. I initially laughed at it but in hindsight it is the truth. I hate it on Halo when you get in the games where the people just do achievements. Is that how we play the game? No, the achievements are supposed to be the natural progression of skill. You get them as you play. You don't plan it out.

I would prefer they had nothing to do with online play. You could do achievements for beating the game and what not, but don't do things like "Double Laser Kill in an Online Free For All". It takes away from the game.

I mean I enjoy comparing achievements as much as the next guy. Although gamerscore is often pointless because I have played about 4 360 games. I see people with ridiculous gamerscores then I see what games they've played. I saw one kid that looked like he'd played up words of 50 or more games.

Too bad losers can plan it out online. And at the same time, boosting their rank. -_-

lol yea, SOME achievements are obviously silly and not worth chasing. I'm talking things like on COD4, you get so many points for smashing all the TV's featuring the terrorist spreading his propaganda. Its fun to replay the level later and see if you can find all the TV's.

Little tasks like that make replaying the game more fun.

It's too bad there's no, "Destroying clocks" achievement for Medal of Honor. I used to shoot clocks in one of the PS2 games. LOL And yes, almost any clock on sight.
