I was rereading Max Punisher and thought some artist are better than i remembered and some worse.
I made a poll and wondered which artist people liked most. Here its not about best overall artist but who draws the best Frank Castle/Punisher look .

Steve Dillon.
Unless we're talking all time, in which case Mike Zeck has to be in there somewhere.

You're high. Lewis Larosa wins, with Parlov a very close second.

Portacio has always been my favorite.

I have to go with Larosa. Braithwaire (sp), is really good, Robertson is awesome, and generally everyone that worked on Punisher MAX were awesome (scratch Chaykin), but when I first saw the art on MAX I was shocked! The Cell is also a great piece of work. But I think you left one out, though he did not did interiors, and this is too bad... Bradstreet is I think the best, and it diesn't get better.

Lewis Larosa wins for the Frank Castle=Clint Eastwood look.
I hate Goran Parlov, because it doesn't follow the realism of the other artists. It's too cartoony.

Fernandez did also a great work, not so much in Kitchen Irish, but in Up is Down, and Slavers arcs.

Yeah, he is pretty cartoony, but he's a brilliant storyteller, which is more important than being able to draw an impressive-looking pinup of the character (or whichever friend/model of your happens to be available that week).

Can't remember seeing Silvestri's Punisher. Does anyone know which issue(s) was this?

I might be Imagining it.
But I remember a few issues on War Journal (1st series) before Jim Lee was on the book.

Best of the best Tim Bradstreet, unfortunately, only covers.

I don't think Tex ever did much Punisher work. I can remember some inking, but not much penciling. I just did a search, I guess he did an annual relatively recently, but not really a guy I associate with Punisher.
Agree with Zeck, though. Portacio as well. But maybe my all-time favorite, John Romita Jr. JRJr was still just starting out with his Frank Miller meets Jack Kirby style, having started it on Daredevil. It fit Frank perfectly. This huge, powerful, hairy-backed Italian guy full of anger and rage. It was emotional, it was kinetic, it was damn near perfect. JRJr's style doesn't work on every character, but to me, he is perhaps the perfect Punisher artist. Ever since Ennis started writing the character, they've been saying they were going to do a Punisher book together. I'm still hoping that happens.

Also, he was the only guy at the time drawing the teeth of the skull as the cartridge belt. I always thought that was a brilliant part of the design, and it always gets ignored.

Nah, I like Bradstreet alright. I just hated that cover -- it had nothing to do with the storyline at all and the attempt to give it the appearance of relevance by tacking on the hammer and sickle pattern on the shirt just made it even more offensive somehow. As a piece of art, I'm not knocking it, but it was really just a lame editorial decision to run with that cover.

The answer is easily Jim Lee, then Marc Silvestri, then Wilce Portacio. I dunno; you excluded them from your poll in the first place, so out of those, I dunno, but the definitive answer still remains: Jim Lee.
Peace.

Jim Lee ? you cant be a fan of recent Punisher works then ;)
Bradsheets is by far the best cover artist i have ever seen. I have read some comic he drew interior but he works best as covers which is why you cant vote for him here.
So if you voted other option cause of Bradsheet revote.

I think that the absolute best Frank Castle/Punisher was Romita Jr's he sort of looked like a boxer with that nose...and his gangsters were always on point.
a close second to me would be those Bradstreet covers:smile:

I liked Portacio's but only because I always liked Portacio's style. His punisher though pretty much looked like every other hero that he drew.
same with Jim Lee

I think JrJr always either downplayed the white gloves (i hate those things) and I think he eliminated the white boots altogether..another good move

I voted for Larosa cause he captured the weary, older, powerful, grizzy look perfectly.
Everything Punisher is since Max series he captured perfectly.
Im not a fan of Punisher only cause of Ennis. I fell for Frank cause of the awesome Max series. His different looks has been real good. He always looks as old, powerful and not too big like some sterieod freak. Palov is good but too cartoony, Dillon is horrible with Punisher. His style just doesnt fit in.

I always liked him, but the MAX series make fall in love with him (ok, not speaking literally here), but it sure was also Larosa's doing.

For me classic Punisher is best drawn by either Jim Lee or John Romita Jr.
Then Steve Dillon and the rest.

Ill cast a vote for Mike Zeck as the best. That mini series was awesome. I wish the guy could have kept up with a monthly book like he did on Cap years ago.

It's as much I think that he also makes more money doing graphic design stuff. Although honestly, from what I've seen of his more recent comics work, he's past his prime.

yea i voted for fernandz, his drawing of franks face can't be beat in MAX, but over all its a tough call for me cause, John Romita JR's punisher still looks fucking great after all this time............
when did Marc Silvestri draw the punisher ?!??

I will never backread old Punisher stories drawn by Lee and his kind. I dislike his generic Leifield like art. It would ruin Punisher for me seeing him drawn by Lee.
Whicle Portacio ? No wonder Punisher wasnt a hit in early 90's all the generic Image artists apparently worked on him....
Not dissing Silvestri i like him after The Darkness,New X-men story.

Leandro Fernandez ftw.
I always felt that his realistic style best suited the gritty nature of the MAX Punisher. I especially loved the look in "Man of Stone". He has to draw the best fire fights in comics.

Steve Dillon. He and Garth Ennis made Punisher vital again. Since Dillon left the book just hasn't felt the same.
My vote went to Fernandez.
ALso love the old Jrjr and Zech Punishers. I just ordered Circle of Blood. Never read it.
And I demand an Ennis and Jrjr mini-series!!! Guest-staring DD and Spiderman. (Non-MAX)

yes almost Fernandez's best work is the Man of stone arc, beaten only by his art in the Slaver's story i think.............

Its great art in every page. I specially liked how the balkan gang looked.
Frank looked great in every panel too.

i would have to agree and say that SLAVERS is the best arc of the whole MAX series with long cold dark a close second (so far)... parlov is drawing a not bad frank himself nowdays...................

The best three for me (not in that particular order, but Slavers IS the best) are:
Slavers
Up is Down and Black is White
In The Beginning...
If I had to make a list with the best of the best in MAX, including Born and the 3 one shots it would be like this:
Slavers
The End
Up is Down and Black is White
The Cell
In The Beginning
Man of Stone
Long Cold dark
Born
Mother Russia
The Tyger
Barracuda
Barracuda mini
Kitchen Irish
Widowmaker

cool list dude!!
you see with in the comic series , as i have said before it would be slavers but out of all the punisher MAX stuff, its hard for me to pick a favorite, cause BORN to me is one of the all time greatest frank/punisher stories and very nearly the best origin story i have ever read, (on power with Batman year 1 by frank miller)....
and Darick Robertson does a great job of the art i think, in BORN too.................
