Spammers get weirder and weirder by the day... I heard rumor that Proof #25 was at the printers so I am hopeful we will see it before Christmas. This has been one long painful stretch.

Yeah, I need my Proof fix. This is one heck of a delay for a book that built such a great rep on always being on time. Ah well, this creative team is one of few in comics I'm willing to wait it out for. Between the story and art...yeah...I hate the wait, but I'll endure knowing it's worth it.

It is hard to wait - I figure this is tough love that Alex/Riley are teaching us so we can deal with the break between Season One and Season Two

I just finished Proof TPB 2 and 3 TPB. Both excellent but I didn't like the 3 plots in 1 that ran through all the issues. It was a little too choppy, and I thought the parts with Proof and back at the base were a little off. I think maybe two arcs, 1 focusing on PROOF and then the one in New York with the action at the base mixed through both.

I love this stuff though. I just plowed through both of them.

Interesting observation...
Reading the monthlies, I definitely sometimes lose the intricacies of some of the multiple plot threads, but reading the TPB's, I feel like I can really see how everything is actually tying together.

Of course, reading the monthlies AND the trades probably helps. :)

Awesome that you dug them... I can't freaking wait for the Julia TPB to show up. I might be looking forward to this one more than I am #25. I felt lost during Julia and like I missed out on a lot, and I'm really looking forward to reading it in one sitting.

(My reading schedule got thrown off in the middle... plus I think I was usually drunk when I starting reading... and it was always late at night... hm... maybe I should look into that)

The Company of Men is still my favorite TPB.

Was there a Proof special from San Diego this year like the one from last year?
I feel like I saw something (maybe on facebook?) about this, but I can't recall.
Did anyone get one?
Or, more importantly, know how I might get my hands on one if they exist?

Yes, there was, they released a sketchbook.

If you get in touch with Another Dimension comics in Calgary Alberta, they should have a few. (It's Riley's local shop.) You can reach them at (403) 283-7078.

Archie says no way it makes it to 30 issues... Archie was one smart cat  Great read. Silly question but does the little boy, Graham, look like Alex's son for real? I am assuming that is where the name came from but curious if the little man got to see himself in a comic book.

Perry - poor, poor Perry

Both those little boys kinda look like my son (depending on how long he lets his hair grow out). Riley drew the kids to look like my boy as a surprise for him. Neither of the kids was named Graham in the script, but my son asked for me to use his name while I was lettering the issue. So, yeah, you and my son are both Proof characters.

And Perry's with his angels now.

Didn't the page in the back explain the year look ahead? I can't recall if it does because I knew about it anyway from reading the Image forums and all the articles related to the book.

I can see how this issue could confuse even regular readers if they didn't have the context that the forums provide or if they didn't read the piece in the back. Then again, it might've been handled on the inside front cover or something..... I can't recall because I've already put my issue away.

Alex Grecian

There's a caption on the very first page that says "One Year Later." It's okay, though, if you don't get everything right away. A lot of mysteries are going to be cleared up in the next three issues (of course, more mysteries will be revealed).

The trades take a lot of work to put together, since we don't just toss a new cover on the existing issues. I generally re-letter bits, change dialogue, adjust coloring, shuffle page-order and, in the case of "Julia," we're adding a short scene that had to be left out of the comic because of space and time considerations.

Part of the reason for the break between Proof seasons is that Riley and I have been under quite a bit of deadline pressure lately, so we haven't had a chance to assemble the next trade, despite the fact that Image wants us to do it ASAP.

That said, we're on the ball now and finally getting the material together. We should be soliciting it very soon. I'll let you know when to look for it.

Sorry about the delay and thanks for checking in.

Any chance for people who buy monthly to see this updated dialogue, page order, and new scene without buying a trade of comics we already own? I love Proof but not enough to double dip like that...

400yrs
01-31-2010, 11:18 AM
I'm a double dipper.

I went back and read issue #1 recently and then compared to the first trade as I didn't remember it quite the same way from the trade. I can say that the re-ordering of the first issue in the trade helped the story flow.

I love the singles and all the extra content in them. Proof singles are easily the best value on the comic shelves. Same with the trades. The extra work that these guys put into the trades make the double dipping absolutely worth it for me. You can do one or the other and get everything you need just fine, but it's awesome to have both too.

Oh, believe me, we're not out to penalize anyone for buying the singles. We'll post the new pages online, so nobody misses out. The new sequence just introduces Proof's "father" a little more clearly, defines their relationship and Proof's feelings for Julia. It's nothing that you'll feel bad about missing, but when everything's in one big chunk for the trade, it'll set things out a little better.

Thanks for the support, guys!

With Proof always sitting at the bottom of my monthly reading list, (this is a good thing like those ice-cream cones that have the bottom filled with chocolate for the very last bite... mmmmmm) I finally read Proof #25 last night... this issue was a huge gamble. Coming off the Julia arc in the past to the side-story in 24 to jump forward in the future was pretty ballsy, and then to have circumstances line up so that there was a...3 month (?)... wait b/t issues too... that's tough.

25 was all kinds of intriguing and, as always, looked fantastic, but it still kind of feels like I haven't read Proof proper in over a year. I did like the issue, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it fits in and how events pan out to create the situation presented here, but the main story left me feeling kind of empty. Not knowing who a lot of these people (or Cryptids) are removed the closeness one feels with the characters, which is a lot of what makes Proof such a strong book. Using those kids as the motivation for the story was pretty interesting, but obviously they shouldn't have been allowed to leave. Then again, if you think that just a brick wall is going to keep people out of a dinosaur park, maybe you should have a talk with John Hammond.

(Was that Autumn that got squished, btw?)

After finishing the main feature, I just wanted to shake the book and yell at it to, "Give me more!!"
That is, however, how I keep losing girlfriends, so instead I kept reading...

And I really really enjoyed having NB7 reprinted in colored form in the back. The B&W version was a lot of fun, (I didn't read it until around issue 10 of the main series) and it was extra cool to compare the two. I liked the blue tones a lot - it made me cold. Having this as a backup was really kind of brilliant as it has a "feeling" that the main series had but was lacking in the main story of 25. (Cryptoids, anyone?) The obvious reason being, of course, that it actually featured "our" Proof... a character I've sorely missed for the past many months (thank God for the trades!) It was, in a way, like coming home again, but also like looking around one more time before you move.

While I'm looking forward to the "feel" of the earlier issues coming back around in Season 2, I have no expectations that the Dover Demon storyline is going to put us "back" in any way but instead push Proof et al in some very unexpected new directions, and, hopefully, get the cast (what's left of them) back together again even if the landscape might be very very different.

The pinups were pretty cool too, but those aren't really a feature about which I ever get overly excited. But now it's making me wonder what my chances are of getting that book CGC SS'd by everyone who contributed. ;) I did like Kelly's 2-page spread at the end a lot. I like the funny.

Enough rambling.
Congrats to everyone involved on 25 issues of a really great series. Here's hoping 2010 is a great year for Proof!

michaeljsmith
02-16-2010, 07:30 AM
I agree that it feels like a while since we have seen Elvis, Ginger and Wayne in action. Obviously we saw a lot of Proof in the Julia story arc but it was a different, younger, less experienced Proof. I am excited for issue #26 to come out.... just wanting it to come out though

Alex Grecian

Thanks, guys!

Working on the last arc of season one has been a blast. The relationships between Elvis, Ginger, Proof, Bella, Nadine, Leander, Wayne... Those are what anchor this series and we didn't realize we'd be away from everybody for so long when we started "Julia."

We still have loose plans to explore Proof's teen years with Thomas Jefferson, at some future point, but that'll have to be a stand-alone OGN or a miniseries. We won't leave the core group for any significant length of time again.

Still very very much looking forward to this if it comes to fruition.
Would be very cool to see this come out as an original hardcover... *heart*

Of course, I think everyone's also still holding out for the inevitable "Absolute" Proof: Season 1 so we can get a better look at Riley's art. :)

That sounds great.... especially as an OGN or mini.

Although I agree with brik and schmakt's opinions on feeling like being away for too long, I'm confident that the Julia arc is going to be one hell of a read as a trade. Can't wait!!

Hell yeah!!

I've given away so many sets of #1-9 and tpb Vol 1, it's nice to have those $1 books (45˘ from DCBS) to give away instead. I always include a hand-written note with each book I give away (if I don't know the person). Otherwise, they could think it was just some crap you are trying to get rid of (man I get some drek 90s Marvel as freebies sometimes..... at least it makes good filler).

What a breath of fresh air!
So very nice to have Proof back in the stack, and this was a great return to form.

Riley's visual on the last page was haunting and beautiful. Well done!
And, although we all knew it was going to happen, it was still a shock to see it laid out. RIP DD.

The juxtaposition b/t the calm lightness of Proof's night and the light-hearted joy of Elvis and Ginger compared to the grimness that began growing at the lodge is what really made this work. You couldn't help but being buffeted about from joy to dread and back again as the story deftly allowed you to hope while retaining an underlying current of, "shit, meet fan."

So is Nadine going crazy? Is the fairy's story really at an end? Elvis isn't going to make it to Season 2, is he? Where's Autumn song? Will Dachshund finally get a meal? Proof's father?? Will Qi save the day?

Wonderful setup... I switched my DCBS shipping from monthly to once-a-week so I can read these things on time. (hopefully) Can't wait to see how Season 1 wraps up.

Especially since Qi is obviously going to be a major player. ;)

Cheers, guys; it was great being back at home with these characters.

I think that ^^^^^ summed it for me. Felt like a got to see my old friends who I missed so dearly. I loved the Proof/Bella and Elvis/Ginger moments. The contrast of the tenderness of their moments with Leander looking at being arrested. The death of a major character. There was a lot going on in this issue.

I am curious to see how season one plays out over the next couple of issues and really hope that we see them sooner than later

So when Proof comes back for season 2 at some point will it be monthly again or more like what we are getting currently?

What you're getting currently, Awesome, is a whole lot of nothing. There was a miscommunication somewhere along the line and #28 has been sitting around in the pipeline, completed for almost two months. It's been taken care of and the last issue of season one will now be out before the first issue of season two.

But we were slipping in the schedule anyway, which was a big reason to reboot, so we could catch up and get ahead again. We were really proud of our shipping record those first two years and don't wanna fall behind again.

I apologize to everyone who's been waiting for #28. Sucks that it's so late. Riley and I both feel like it's one of the best things we've ever done. At least, we think so. It's hard to remember since we did it so long ago!

Thank you, Murch.

The completed files for #28 have been sitting around on someone's server (not mine) for the last two months. I'm not happy, but I'm not gonna point any fingers no matter how nicely you ask. This issue finally began its journey through the printing process and should be completed any minute now. I have high hopes it will be fully printed and sitting on a pallet waiting to be shipped by the end of the weekend. At that point, I'm sure it'll be misplaced again and will hang out in a warehouse for another couple of months, possibly mislabeled as Watchmen TPBs.

Please remind your retailer that you once wanted this comic and still kinda want to read it, would you? I promise that the ending will smack you hard in the forehead and make you salivate for the launch of Proof: Endangered. There's not one, but two big cliffhangers!

We understand that accidents happen, but we really worked our asses off on this and feel pretty damn bad that it got lost in the system and we've ended up looking like incompetent douchebags.

Recent delays aside, this book has been one of the more on-time titles out there over the past few years, so I think you've earned a little leniency from your fans.

I've haven't read or heard of anyone threatening to drop Proof because of the delays (which is a pretty common fanboy threat when a book goes late), so that's got to be a good sign that your fanbase is pretty solid.

That being said, it had better be worth the wait!!

Any plans to collect season one in a nice big hardcover volume, or should I be contacting my local book binder once I get my hands on #28?

WHOA!!! the last issue was...whoa!!!

And...INK MONKEY!!!!

Also, I thought Riley's art was a bit wonky, with considering the size of a human head and and the size of the trashcan, in two different panels, being when Proof is in the room and at the end. I mean, the perspective was a little wonky. Imo, not all that could've been clearly visible and why weren't they smelled?

Anyways, though I thought the art was subpar in this issue, the story alone, was very nicely handled at the end!

I was actually more turned off by the over use of purple-tones in the colors than I was that art personally

Thanks for the heads up on the vol. 5 TPB! I'll definitely be getting it. The Julia arc was just so emotional and heartbreaking, Proof is one of my must buy reads now.

BTW, will issue #17 be collected at some point?

At some point, yes. Just haven't figured out how to fit it in yet.

iFanboy has a new interview with me, all about the upcoming Proof: Endangered series. Check it out...

And let your retailer know that you want the new #1 issue this December. No, seriously. I know that sounds kinda hucksterish of me, but Riley and I are very proud of this thing. We won't let you down.

Awesome!

I have let my retailer know that I wish to purchase this fine comic. I will be reading till you drive it into the ground Alex, renumbered or not.

Also,
Proof: Endangered features three chupacabras, a ningen, Mongolian death worms, Scottish blue men of the Minch, a yeti, an oni (sort of), and, of course, our resident Bigfoot. And, who knows, if Proof succeeds in finding more of his kind during Endangered, we might have a whole tribe of sasquatches in there somewhere.

I am positively quivering with anticipation.

I finally got some time to read the fifth Proof trade this weekend and WOW was it good! I wasn't sure if the Julia story could be topped, but this came really close. I was very intrigued by the "One Year Later" issue and the quality just kept coming. I like how the Chupacabra has become more than what she (it?) was when we first saw her.

As for the final reveal, I suspected from the start something was up with Leander but I so didn't see that coming! At all!! This book continues to remain one of my top buys. Big thanks to Alex, Riley, and everyone else involved in making this. Such a joy to read all the time.

What a great freaking issue - and a pretty sad issue on top of that. Elvis is dead and is last words to Ginger lead us to believe she may be pregnant with his son... I am sure that is a "wait until the next issue" sort of thing but that is my guess. Initially I found it odd that Proof really wasn't acknowledging the fact that Elvis was laying there but I am sure throughout all of his years he has learned to deal with death differently than the rest of us. I do think his parting words were very touching (if I don't sound too gay throwing that out there).

I loved the Colonel total hatred for cryptids is such that he would take a knife to his own body rather than allow a chupacabra to inhabit it. That says a lot about his character. I also start thinking about the jump ahead from issue #25 and the way things are playing out I almost think the Colonel could have been the good guy in the whole thing. I wonder how the Wayne-thing is going to play into all of this as we see the developments unfold.

I loved that Team Proof came together and were walking out in the street to do what needed to be done there towards the end. It gives that Shootout of the OK Coral type of feel to what is going on. It is apparent some people are not going to make it out alive... I can see Bella dying and maybe even Nadine trying to avenge Elvis.

In the end this is right up there with one of my favorite issues... no question. Everything about ENDANGERED has been a pure joy a as a die hard fan of the book. You have brought things together, the pacing has been at a break neck speeding, and the art has never been better.

As a side note I loved the cover you picked - if you could do it over again I think that should be the choice. Maybe my favorite of the series... simple and powerful. Also, not to get too sappy or anything but I am going to miss you guys. I know we have one more issue left but dang I love this book. I am optimistic that we get more Proof sometime in the future but if not I am thankful for the stories you have told to this point. To think this all came about because somebody at a dinner one night said "What if Bigfoot worked for the CIA". Thanks for a great book each and every issue....

Thanks for the support and the buzz and, mostly, for reading the book, everybody!

I think Image has pretty much talked us into continuing Proof as a series of miniseries, but we need to get some other stuff (like Green Wake and The Yard) off our respective plates before we can responsibly schedule the next one. Issue five contains several promises of that. You'll see.

I'll be shouting from the rooftops when it happens, so keep the book on your pull-lists and an eye on those rooftops.

Absolutely loved the original 28 issues, the current mini Endangered is just really lack luster for me, feels very, very, very rushed. Too much trying to be crammed into 5 issues and there's no time allowed for natural flow and pacing of the story.

I'll stick with the book, but I really miss the way this book was with volume 1. I really hope you guys and Image decide to start up a volume 2 rather than continue these mini's. I liked the methodical approach much more than this plate full of mess. :frown:

The word is that Proof is going on hiatus for quite some time while Alex and Riley go work on some other projects. The series will likely continue in the miniseries format just based on the sales (or lack of) for the series. I would have loved a complete second volume but I don't see that happening.

SeritoNiN, may I print this in the letters column for #5? Seriously.

Meanwhile, I'm sorry you didn't care for the pacing of this arc. I went for something a little different this time around, frankly trying to pull in folks who probably felt the first volume was a little gentle for their tastes.

When we got the numbers in for Endangered and realized that it wasn't going to be a possibility to continue the book the way we wanted to* I ended up kinda cramming a lot into the last three or four issues. I wanted to be able to step away and leave things in a good place for awhile and have the elements in place to come back later and reboot this puppy.

So a lot went into Endangered. It worked for some, but clearly not for you. Glad you stuck with us anyway.

We'll be back and so will Proof. We just have to get some other stuff off our plates and figure out how to make more people want Proof.

Thanks!

A

* That wasn't a decision that Image made. They've been incredibly supportive of Proof and are talking to us about how soon we can bring the book back. Riley and I just can't really turn down other projects unless Proof can sustain itself.

Dear Mr Grecian,

You are a very, very bad man for killing off Elvis Chestnut. Why couldn't you have killed off... ummm... can't think of any character that I want to see gone from the pages instead of Elvis. How about a page number? Why not kill off one of them instead of Chesty?

Anyway, been reading Proof since issue one and absolutely love it. Please come back with another series as soon as possible!

Well, hell. Sorry to hear it. I stopped buying the comic with #25 (nothing to do with quality, I hasten to add, except for the quality of my finances: I stopped buying everything around the spring of last year & have only recently started trying to find cheap back issues of all the titles I would've been buying all along if I could've) ...

... so I guess it's my fault.

All my fault.

All my damned fault.

Where did I put the razor blades, & where did I put my wrist ...

*siiiigh*

Had no idea the title was floundering, since I've been staying away from this thread to avoid spoilers. (I only just obtained #26, & I've got, or will soon receive #s 1 & 3 of Endangered.) Crap!

Actually the sale have never been spectacular but the hope was with the ENDANGERED launch they would increase. Unfortunately, the sales for ENDANGERED #1 were no different than the end of SEASON ONE. I know the trades due well but you have to make money on the singles to justify the trades.

There will be more PROOF - it will just take time.

But noooooooooooooooooo.

Ok so I was a bit behind in my reading and just got around to Endangered #5. It was very good and terribly bittersweet all the way through, definitely the best issue of the mini. I actually really liked all the "to be continued"s. It's nice to know there will be more Proof someday. The epilogue was my favorite bit. John looks so happy. I have to ask though, where's Bella in that scene? I guess the intervening five years weren't all sunshine and lollipops in Tibet...

Ahoy there, Alex!

Greetings from New York City! How goes it?

I'm very much looking forward to enjoying Proof. I picked up the trades, and they're impatiently waiting for me. The whole idea of Bigfoot working in tandem with humans to find/fight monsters is something which speaks to my inner 10-year old and says "get hip to this"! Just as soon as I can scratch and claw my way through this big old stack of great Ed Brubaker stuff, you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be sinking my teeth into Proof!

Drop me a line by email sometime? We'd love to conduct a Q&A session with you via email, for all our readers to enjoy!
