That is a beautiful cover. Alex and Riley continue to outdue themselves time and time again.
I collect the singles and will still be getting this trade. Love me some Proof.
Naw, I get Posh and Sporty. You can have the other three. See, that was easy.

Since Kelly did such an amazing job of showing us that cover for Proof: Volume 2, The Company of Men, I though I would throw out there a few of the upcoming covers to get everyone excited as well....

An idea I had on the newsarama thread... might have merit. might make Riley go bald, but I've come up with a great way to get more readers for Proof!
Okay, everyone wants to be in comic , right?
And every writer needs yellow- or red-shirted ensigns, right?
Everyone who pimps the book hardcore gets to get a cameo in the book where they just get eaten by whatever cryptid is lurking in that particular story. Genuis, right? We get aproximately 10 seconds of fame, and everyone wants to be in the book so readership goes up and then it is the number one book in comics and Brikhed and I get marketing jobs at Image... it is can't miss.
I have a notion based on Lee's idea...
Anyone who comes up with a fun new way to get Proof noticed (or uses conventional methods, but goes nuts with it), will be automatically entered in a contest. The winner or winners will get to be a Victorian-era circus freak (or circus employee) in our next arc, "Julia."
You won't necessarily be killed, but you will become the property of Riley and me (Or, rather, the character based on you will). Riley and I are the sole judges of the contest. Nobody should be obnoxious or make people hate Proof by pimping it in inappropriate places or badgering folks who simply aren't interested in Proof. You may use passages from the series and any art you'd like to, within reasonable limits (in other words, don't post entire issues for free anywhere).
If there are two winners, they'll be conjoined twins.

the variety is very cool. but there's a lot going on in those covers. I really liked the latest issue for it's simplicity, involvement in the story and 'clean' look. :)

I like that the book offers both. The cover to #14 reminds me of a horror movie and the cover to #15 demonstrates chaos. Issue #12 was a great cover, and the rumor is that they were going to pull that cover and replace it with the one shown on the back of issue #11 but switched back to the original (I believe this is true and I am not making it up).

ok, guys... It's been like Christmas here lately thanks to Alex and Riley... therefore (and in anticipation of the upcoming Halloween issue!!!), I just have to share. (i.e. brag ;)) Riley did an awesome commission for me, and I got the pencils for the pinup to #11 at the same time. I mailed him copies of #'s 1 and 11 for some sigs, which he returned remarked and with another crazy cool drawing that it is just impossible to resist coloring in with little markers...
When Alex offered the Sketchbook, I took him up on it and also sent those copies of 1 and 11 over for the double sig. Got all of those back along with the excellent mini-comics Snowfall, The Impossible Snowman, and Little Remains. (I think Snowfall is my favorite)
ah... and an excellent sketch in the front cover of the sketchbook!
Hope you all enjoy :) :)
Thanks Alex & Riley!

I know a lot of people have wanted to see me die anyway so I figured I would just provide you the chance to see it happen. Proof #13 (from Image Comics) comes out on 10/29/08 and according to co-creator Alex Grecian I am getting a guest part in the comic and I get killed. My funeral will take place in issue #16. Just a bit part (consider me the Ensign Jones from Star Trek that would beam down with the regular team and get killed) but still an honor.
So as you are walking your LCS this week trying to find a book to buy, pickup Proof #13 and flip through to see me kick the can, how often do you get to see somebody you want dead die?

Mi-Chen-Po is Santa?? ;)
And yes. Yes, that was gruesome. And, damn, Savage Dragon ripped in two? Lots of blood. That was FUN! Went by WAAAAYYY too fast, but fun. Thanks, guys! (But there was no ink monkey...)
Your idea of the Wendigo (I'm assuming?) was also very sweet. Way frightening, and Riley's depiction was spot on scary. Some nice books in the library too. :) TWO Dragon books? Moby Dick, the Bible, Seven Sons... I love the details in the splash page. I love looking for little details in pieces like that. Although it looks like there's a sweet little puppy in that jar there. :-/
Screamland was fun too. "I am not sure if he is supposed to be a Magic trading card, or some guy who collects Magic trading cards." Priceless.
I really liked this installment of The Liar too. I have a hard time, generally, with serialized stories and don't have much to say 'til the end, but this was a good grab-you kind of installment. Rock on, Kelly. I hope these Archie Snow adventures show up in the trade all together...
And hot damn, that's my commission on the back cover! That's so cool. :)
Congrats on your first anniversary; keep it coming!

Plenty of ink monkey action coming up. Too much going on in this arc!
And the two wendigo were in the back-up story, "Lions and Tigers and Bears." They'll probably be back fairly soon. Mi-Chen-Po, though, is one of the many actual Asian names for the Yeti.
Thanks! And thanks for commissioning such a great piece that I wanted to use it to promote the book!

I finally got back in town last night too late to get my comics. I feel like this issue brought about more questions then it did answer them, and that is unique four issues into a story arc. I am happy to see Elvis is back in the mix (though I had this strange feeling he is going to die in the near future, we can talk about that another time). I sort of hope that Marc gets eaten by an alligator then again I want to see an entire back-up story of Marc working the singles scene in a bar (think Night at the Roxbury). Proof still being sick is a huge concern and the thunderbirds getting hungry cannot be good for any of us living in Illinois. For some reason when I saw Mi-Chen Po in the Foreshadowing section before I assumed he was going to be Proof's dad or something (maybe still is). Still curious to see how the Savage Dragon plays out in the story arc and his reality of existence.
Lions and Tigers and Bears was a great story and an interesting way to show us more about Dr Bay and how she ended up at The Lodge. I think the art was pretty nice but I did not like the panel where she had no face (personal issue). Great story and the Windigo were creepy enough to give me nightmares.
Screamland's backup story was funny and fun. It was great to see kids dressed up like Dover Demon and Proof walking by in the various scenes. I was a big fan of the mini when it came out (after Greg told me to buy it) and I love seeing more from the team there. I am hoping to see more Screamland in the future.
Congrats to Lee for a very nice quote on the back cover, that was pretty cool to say "hey i know that guy and for once he is right" (you are right lots of time I guess... http://www.imagecomics.com/messageboard/images/smiles/icon_lol.gif )
...as for my death, first thanks guys that was pretty cool. I truly was your Ensign Jones and I couldn't be prouder. My wife knows ZERO about comics and is pretty sure that I waste too much money on them (until I point out our 401K and she realizes we wasted a lot of money there too these days). I showed her the Agent Smith page, the the page with Proof yelling Mike. She said "Whatever". Then I flipped to the page that mentions the family and she just looked at me in disbelief. She accused me of making that page an inserting... I wish I could draw like Riley http://www.imagecomics.com/messageboard/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif
It was another fabulous issue guys and my only complaint is the wait until next month. Posting from beyond the grave this is Agent Smith, The Lodge (now I need to get a badge).

Thanks for being so patient with me. I know "The Liar" has taken awhile to get moving, but I think the big monster reveal was worth it. I, too, think it's my best work to date. When the story is collected (and it will be, but where we haven't figured out yet) it will flow quite smoothly.

great issue, as a whole, but I dunno. there's something about the way Riley's art comes across in this one. Not sure who's fault it is, but it's too unfocused, sloppy looking, even if the pencilwork underneath is not. I don't like it. it's too much like the random art of mack or templesmith's art can get. This is the cover for Proof #18. (Jeez, nobody's even seen the terrific cover for #17 yet!) We're finally (Finally!) getting to the long-awaited "Julia" arc. We're gonna see a younger Proof's circus days in 1860's London. We'll see Springheel Jack, a very cool Scotland Yard inspector named Augustus McKraken and an inventor with a fondness for steam-powered automatons.
It's seriously gonna be a complete blast!
Oh, yeah, I've also seen Riley's cover for issue 19 and it kicks serious ass too. He's painting his butt off and I think he's stopped sleeping. Reserve your copies of this baby now!

What a great issue. I was able to pickup my books on the way out of town and actually read Proof as I was driving and sitting in traffic.
Riley the art was clean and crisp and was just amazingly beautiful. You do not get enough credit for the product you turn out each month. Amazing.
Alex this was a wonderful story and you told it in such a unique fashion. Proof and Dragon's conversation was funny and sad at the same time. All of us are still trying to figure out if Dragon is there but since Bella didn't acknowledge him we have to thing this is Proof's imagination. The insight into Autumn was scary. Is there anothe agent working with her? The picture for Leander was that him and his wife befor she died? If so she has Leander with an X like she is going to kill him. We know somebody is going to die - Leander maybe? As for the Joe portions of the story there is a lot of the future happening right before our eyes.
You guys deliver each month and our always proving that this is the best book out today. I feel sorry for Alex and Riley though - you guys don't get to enjoy it like the rest of us, you are missing out.

I've just switched to mail order comics, and have now discovered another great thing about Proof... Since it comes out at the end of the month, I only have to wait a couple of days extra to get it even when ordering by mail. SWEET! :)
(I was reading a bunch of old Image comics over the weekend... WildC.A.T.s was a decent team book, Spawn was sweet, Shadowhawk was... not, Dragon was still awesome, and MAXX should be the next Image guest star for Proof. :))

I have about half of my comics on mail order (though I get them weekly through http:// HeavyInk.com - it is 20% discount and free shipping) and the other half I still get from the LCS. Proof is one of those titles I need the minute it comes out.
I agree with your assessment of old days Image. Maxx was an incredible series and if one of those reads that I would love to track down all of the originals and collect at some point (I have too many of those things going on right now though).
Ahhh..issue #14. So good. The art, clean and nice, yet artistic. Love the beginning storyline and am more interested in where that is heading than anything else, though the dialogue with Dragon was pretty amusing. ;)

I make it a point to purchase anything I see that references Kurt Vonnegut b/c that's the kind of guy I am. I don't know what this whole Proof thing is about, but I sure do love me some Kilgore Trout and I guess that now I'm going to have to keep reading this weird little comic from Image...
It's a good thing the comic is so farking good too.
I must concur that the Dragon/Proof dialog was just brilliant and funny and snappy... Often these little asides are just stupid and pull the reader out of the story, but this read well and fit perfectly. Good job!
As for Joe... wow. I absolutely love it! The way you molded his origin was so very engrossing... I'm a fan of fictional works that ground themselves in our reality. Sometimes this comes off as heavy-handed or desperate, but you wove Joe's origin (and the revelation thereof) in with touchstones of history so effortlessly that I wouldn't have known it was happening if I wasn't all giddy inside due to how well it was pulled off.
Thank goodness someone is finally getting around to seeing just what in the world Autumn was doing too. I'm glad the wolf wasn't dead... Riley, your pencils for Autumn's apartment were wonderfully spooky. I think that was my favorite art page of the issue.
I know I'm forgetting something, cuz I forgot to write this yesterday right after I finished reading... but this was definitely one of the strongest issues of the series thus far. I'm sure I've said that before, but this time I really mean it. :)
Great job, guys!
EDIT: oh yeah... one other thing...

All great points showing how amazing each and every issue of PROOF really is and just as a bonus it is always on time. It is amazing that I can circle a date on my schedule and know that my favorite book is coming out on time, every time.
Alex and Riley sure know how to keep all of us fans happy. Now everyone go out and buy Proof Book 2: The Company of Men and hand it out as a Christmas present to those you love most.

It is always fun to see a post like the one below...
I'm pretty sure that I'm going to add PROOF to my monthly pull list, and then try and track down the original issues. I'm saving so much money a month now that I've dropped the vast majority of my Marvel and DC books that I can afford to support my fave titles in both monthly AND trade form!

I always want to recommend it to people, but none of my comic reading friends would go near it, despite the quality.
It's kind of frustrating to have them ask what you're reading, and you say "Oh man, that last issue of Proof was stellar," and then they say "Well Batman R.I.P. was really annoying me." This is the exact conversation I had with my friend the other day.

Thanks, guys! Gavin, we hope you liked The Dragon's cameos. KC, we manage this month in/month out by paying dozens of uncredited "assistants" to do most of the actual writing and drawing while we work on our tans. That's a joke. Really, we're just that good. Mostly we don't eat or sleep or do anything but produce comics. And we love it. I'll pass your questions on to Riley (maybe he got logged out too), but I can tell you that the painting on the back cover was just a goof Riley sent me, but it inspired the "Company of Men" arc.

This, this right here is one of those fabled "damn good comics" that should be saved and preserved on everybody's bookcase or in their monthly pull list. And unlike the creatures that inhabit its pages, the more people that know about this, the better.

Ben,
Do you have the trades that you could lend them so they can read it at no cost(other than the time involved)? I've done this twice and both times it was succesfull.
You could also direct them to the Image comics website where the first issue is available to read for free.
If nothing else, just keep talking about it until they give it a shot. You know they won't be dissapointed:smile:

Proof #15 - Spoilers Included
First, I will start with the obvious praise that is well deserved - great issue. The book delivered again, just as it does month after month, after month. I am happy to be through this story arc so that I can now sit down and read it all in one sitting. I know there are things that I missed.
Alex, the story was great. You brought together a lot of things at one time and pulled it all together to close out this story arc. My biggest complaint to this point is that you are not close enough for me to strangle you because I left with more curiosity and questions now than I had going into this issue. The Rabbi is obviously a much more pivotal figure than we had seen to this point. He knew who Po was and what he was up to and even spoke Mandarin to him (show off). Who is the Rabbi?
Joe has come of age and wants to go out on his own? Get an apartment maybe and meet a nice young girl  There is a tall man with no shirt wandering the streets of NY and nobody might notice, what a crazy town. It was interesting to see him not pick either side...but I am sure he will be back. Now Po goes after Ginger? Did she really forget meeting him or is she on his side now?
Proof is back in good health and Dragon was really no where to be seen once they leave the cave.. was he ever there? We will never know. I did like to see Proof step in with the crazy mom and see that her son got taken away. It was a small detail but something that shows the character of Proof and a great part of the story. He needs to job on Bella's offer though - she is a cutie
Marc? What can I say about my boy Marc? He lost his watch...
Riley, the art was incredible as always but to be honest you are going to have a tough time topping what you did in issue #14. So it is hard to say this is a let down but that issue was so incredible that it set a really high bar. I loved the the thunderbird scenes and really liked how you were able to draw in backdrops like the phoenix as the flowed through the story. Question though - was the one alligator supposed to be white? If so is there significance to that one?
All-in-all you guys kicked butt again and I am eager to read this whole story arc at one time and get a better feel for the pacing and overall story.

"Sme! Don't let it get me!" I was rolling as it wandered around ticking.
Another great issue. Now the only question I have is which one of the two is actually the evil one? Something to ponder. We have been led to believe that Po is the bad guy, but is he really the bad or is the priest? Remember it's a Cryptid book, and Po is the Cryptid and the Priest is human. We know Po and Proof are opposites but is that just because Proof was raised among humans? Just something to think about.
It was something that I began thinking as I was reading the conversation between the Priest and Po. The Priest told him the he needed to turn Joe. We know that the series is building to a Cryptid War. Now it's all about finding out who is the "good" side. I think Alex has weaved quite a tale here, because usually 15 issues in you know which side is which, and who stands where. Here we don't really have a clear idea, even though we think we do. Maybe Proof is the key to the war, and Leander and the founders of the Lodge know that. That's why they made him a part of the Lodge. To keep an eye on him. And the Col may have thought, or come to the conclusion that the best way to win the war was to take out the piece that could decide the war. You know...kill the heart and the body will follow. Or I could be way off and Alex is going to through us way more curves over the next few years. Who knows? The Demon knows, but he ain't saying.

All I'm saying is it seems a little suspect to me. Not that Leander hates the cryptids to the degree that Autumn did, but that he is on whatever side the Priest is on. That's all I'm saying.
Unless of course there turns out to be 3 sides. Po, Priest and the Lodge. Hmmm.

PROVE YOU'RE A PROOF FREAK AND WIN!
Contest allows fans the chance to become a PROOF freak!
It's easy to say you're a big fan, but PROOF creators Alex Grecian and Riley Rossmo give you the chance to show it with the upcoming Prove You're A PROOF Freak Contest!
"Since issue number one, Riley and I have been blessed with a terrific fan base who often go out of their way with grassroots efforts to promote the series," Grecian said. "The Prove You're A PROOF Freak contest takes it one step further, by giving fans the chance to show off their fandom in a creative way - cut cardboard, sculpt ice, paint the side of your house, mow the logo into your corn field - do whatever it takes within legal means to show the world how much you love PROOF! Our favorite PROOF display could have three readers winning big!"
Photos of entries are due to letterstoproof@gmail.com no later than 12:00 PM EST time on April 1st, 2009. The top ten entries will be published in PROOF, with the second runner up receiving a copy of PROOF #1 signed by Grecian and the first runner up receiving an original sketch by Rossmo. The Grand Prize winner will be drawn into PROOF as a Victorian-era circus freak, created using their name and likeness, and will receive a page of art from the issue they appear in! In addition, those entries done in conjunction with their local comic book shop will also award their store with a signed copy of PROOF #1 and an original page of PROOF art!

I try to get books in the same format I started with. Since I got Proof Vol. 1 as a trade, I was going to continue to read the series as trades. The latest issue came out today and it started out with a funeral, and flowed in to the rest of the gang just being at the Lodge. Alex writes these issues so good you don't miss there not being any real action in them. The letter pages were back filled with condolence letters from some of the agents that attended the funeral, along with one of the Faces to Greg web interviews. And two back up stories!
Riley's art is still terrific, especially when he's drawing expressions. He has a way of telling a story with all his characters that just adds to the goodness of the book.
You can't go wrong with this book.

SPOILERS INCLUDED
Issue #16 was incredible. As much as I love the stories in Proof and the meaty arcs of great drama and action I am starting to appreciate these between story stories. The characters day off type of stories. This is an amazingly underutilized portion of story telling that most comic book writers miss and Alex Grecian nails with a two ton hammer. The story is always mindful to tie up loose ends when needed and leave others out there when there is more story to tell. The drama with Noel and his dad Wayne was a great moment and a real life issue that you do not see most people willing to address let alone tackle in a comic. Belinda joining The Lodge was an interesting twist and I would love to see her and Elvis in action. There is a lot of potential with them as partners. Proof and Bella was a nice moment, especially seeing how her husband died. The character development continues to push forward and build upon the greatness that has already been established. I am excited to see that Marc is now a player and staying in the game.
Riley knocked it out of the park again with the art.. though there was a weird shadowing on Elvis in one panel after he talked to Dover Demon... yes that is picky when you talk about a single panel but that is Riley's art - perfect each and every time so it is odd when anything is a little off. I loved the return of Autumn and how that was played out in the end. I am not sure if that was Alex's idea of Riley's idea but you nailed it. For all of the challenges you had with this issue (drawing 9 real fans into different pages) you killed it. Loved the tributes you paid on the various pages that were used for inspiration from the originals. You just have an incredible style and I cannot get enough of your art.
Great back-up story by Alex and Paul. You crammed even more greatness into a already great book. I also appreciate and enjoyed all of the letters in the back of the book, not just because they were all about me dying, but because they were fun and Alex appreciated them enough to put them in the book. Very rarely does a creator listen to their audience but Alex not only listens but he is part of the fun. Riley and Alex put out the best book month-in and month-out... it is just a bonus that they are two of the coolest guys on this planet.
Not to be forgotten is THE LIAR back-up story by our man Kelly. I am looking forward to going back and reading the whole story in one sitting. Archie Snow seems like a fun character that you can do a lot of things with and I hope we get more of his adventures.
A Plus to Team Proof for knocking it out of the park 12 different ways. There are so many people complaining about crap books right now that should be checking this title out. Brilliant each and every time.
Until next time.... I believe in Monsters

No problem. I mean, I greatly enjoy every issue from cover to cover, and I could go on all day about how original and sweet and hilarious and insightful the book is, but I figure that's been done, and you're probably bored with hearing it.

Proof - Issue #17 (spoilers included)
Another great issue and really odd to have such a true "standalone" issue. I will start with a first obvious - Riley I missed your art on this issue (glad we go it for the back-up story but you were missed because your art is Proof). The next point I would like to make is Kelly you kicked a lot of butt with your art on the issue. You do blood and gore very well, it suits your style, and I would love to see you on a regular book or have an Archie Snow mini come out or something. Loved it.
The story was entertaining and actually felt a little less sophisticated that what I feel Proof brings to the table and that was perfect because of the characters that were involved in the story. The tone of the story really reflected the character. We have people getting killed in a slave labor environment, hearts being yanked out, and some guy trying to get a girl to go behind the barn and "snoggle". This was a wonderful back story into El Chupacabra and the events that lead us to The Goatsucker.
The back-up story made my jaw drop (first yea Riley on the art) but the content. We are now seeing alliances form and people chose sides. All of the sudden El Chupacabra seems like a major player in organizing things rather than just the muscle behind the scenes. We also get to see that tasty pie show up again... nothing ever happens in Proof for no reason at all - there is always a purpose.
I am so eager to see what is next and where we are going but the next story arc takes us back to where Proof has been when he was with the circus.
All in all this is another fabulous issue and I continue to shout to anyone that listens that Proof is best, most complete book that is out on the market right now. Great job to Team Proof (including Kelly) and you guys go ahead and take a few weeks off.... but make sure that issue #18 is not late

Next issue starts the "JULIA" arc and to be honest I am pretty darn excited. Since I started reading this book all I have heard from Alex is that he has had this story in his mind since before God said "let there be light". I am curious to see how it plays out - I am fairly certain I have some good guesses (especially based on the FORESHADOWING section in the back of the firs trade) but Team Proof always has a surprise or two up their sleeves

Ok, so I finally got the second trade yesterday and read it last night. I'm really relating to Elvis for some reason, he seems like the more relateable character compared to Ginger. The Denver Demon is awesome, he can be so funny and omnious at the same time, I hope we get to read more about him. And maybe it's just me, but Leander seems like he has a bit of a shady past. Not sure why, but I don't completely trust him.

Proof #18 - spoilers included
WOW - this is another great issue of Proof (I think I start off every month saying that phrase... and for good reason). We know very little about Proof's background to this point other than what we learned in Monster Pileup and a few tidbits dropped here and there so this issue is a treat.
Seeing Proof in a 19th century circus seems to make all of the sense in the world to me. I was however shocked to see some other familiar faces there. Mi-Po Chen and Dover Demon (or was it another demon?). I always thought of Dover Demon as a he but maybe he is a she. Regardless we are seeing some familiar faces showing a lot of history together and therefore they are going to have a lot more feeling and emotion towards each other moving forward.
Springheel Jack is one bad mo fo that is fo sho (I shouldn't try to talk like that). Riley's interpretation of the character is a bizarre and scary depiction of a truly insane killer. Seeing how Thomas treats Julia and Proof's admiration for her sure tugs at the heart strings in a weird sort of way (Bigfoot, the Bearded Lady and a circus owner... even Jerry Spring couldn't top that love triangle).
There is a lot going on in this issue and I can only imagine that I will find more with the next reading. This is a great jumping on point for a new reader and an even bigger treat for us long-time fans of the book.
Congratulations to Alex for finally getting to tell the story that he has wanted to write for years now. Great art, amazing colors, and an all-in-all gem of an issue. Proof rocks!!
I already hate Springheel Jack!!!

Awesome issue. I definitely agree with BrikHed21 about being surprised to see the Dover Demon there at the circus, though I expected to see Mi-Po Chen. Seeing the Dover Demon in a dress didn’t make me stop and think he was female, I just figured it was suppose to be funny.
I also think Spring Heel Jack is certainly one of the harder monsters for artists to portray – which may explain why he has only shown up in handful of comics and cartoons. That being said Riley Rossmo did a pretty wicked job - though I don't know how I feel about that big scissor arm.
However if anybody is interested the UK Goth Punk band Zombina and the Skeletones (http://www.myspace.com/zombinaandtheskeletones) do an awesome song about Jack which can be heard for free on their MySpace page. Just follow the link!

Can anyone associated with this book do me a favor? Can you call Image HQ and ask them to call Diamond and tell them to get their shit together? My LCS has been trying to get me a copy of Volume 2 for (at least) six weeks now. Diamond keeps giving him some noise about them moving their warehouse. The "couple of weeks" Diamond said it would take is about to become a couple of months. Both me and my LCS are getting kind of pissed about this. I want to read the book and he wants the sale.

This does indeed suck and I always prefer to give the $$ to the LCS but I also weigh all of the factors and at times I just suck it up and order from the person that can get me the book.
The bad thing about a situation like this is that EVERYONE is at the mercy of the distributor. There is little that Alex & Riley can do or that Image Comics can do. They can voice a complaint but the control lies with the distributor but the people that lose out are the consumer and the comic creators.
Good luck.

Proof #19 - Spoilers Included
First, I will start with the obvious - another great issue. Good that is out of the way.
This issue brought about a mix of emotions. First, your rip my heart out with the scene between Proof and Lent. I wanted to jump into the pages of the comic and kick that guys butt. I have to assume that Julia, while supposedly intelligent, would choose a man like him because he is a man and it helps make her feel more normal. Everyone standing there can see what she means to Proof and she is blind to the fact. Then again they are going to get married here soon so she must wise up a little. I just question if the kid really Lent's child? If he is so sickened by the monkey would he actually be intimate with her? I know the real life story but since this is your book you can take the liberties.
I also expected Springheel Jack's keeper to be a grandma looking figure like he was some freak and lived with his mom. Seriously though do we have a case of a father that will let his son do anything out of love or is it something more?
Mi-Chen Po showed us a lot about his character in the hospital and his interactions with the Detective. "BOY". He also showed an allegiance to a human and considering how he turns out that is an interesting dynamic to his makeup. What is going to push him over the edge? Springheel kill his father and Proof is off messing around with Julia and wasn't around to help? [sorry reaching with guesses as usual]
The art was spectacular again and I hope that Riley is having as much fun drawing these period pieces as I am at reading them because it is really fun. The colors are great but I do find them so different than anything else that I would read that it takes my eyes a few minutes to adjust to the deeper tones.
Finally, Wayne is a smooth man in that jacket and medallion. I seriously want to see them show up at The Lodge and see an agent with an Afro. There is your next commission piece Riley, Proof with a 'Fro. Great introduction to Dover Demon.
I know I said FINALLY already but one more thing. Archie Snow is an intriguing character Kelly. Honestly, the early stories were nice and fun but you are starting to building enough of the character that I am anxious to see what happens next.
Well done by all involved and I cannot wait to take a few minutes and sit down and read it again to see what I might have missed.
- cheers

Cryptid War is the BIG throw down that the book has building towards. Everyone will have to pick a side and it appears to be Mi-Po in one corner and Proof in the other

CONGRATS!!!!
That would be awesome!
Though I'd still be more interested in the comic book stories, it would be great for all you who created it, to have something like this.
Oh, and this last issue didn't really have the emotional impact as the previous one, but I think it was a nice little wrap up to the storyline.

The story is yet to be finished  there is still more to this story arc to come, but I agree that issue #20 was just amazing. Best issue to date without question.

WOW - Alex and Riley you put on one page a scene that actually made me cringe as a reader. I was shocked and I was disturbed. I have never made an out loud reaction to a comic, you guys made me do that today. I actually just sat there staring at that page for a while.... that was impactful.
This was another fabulous issue and from a drama standpoint it does not get more intense than this one. I still contend that issue #20 might have been your best work to date but this issue is right up there as a close second. Proof continues to show he is more human than most of the characters in the book. I also liked and appreciated that we got some Ginger and Elvis in this issue. I liked the way the story flowed and I thought it was an amazing way to tell the story.
Riley was amazing as usual and the spash page with the train was pretty freaking sweet. You did an amazing job of telling the most heartbreaking part to this series and there was no dialogue or words. That scene was told with your art and you were on point.
Dave has really raised the bar on providing a beautiful backdrop through the use of color. This arc has been one of various pallets and tones and each has played out so well. I have been super impressed.
The back-up story was great and shows us that Nadine is really not as helpful for the Colonel as we originally thought. This is going to be a hard issue to sit on and wait a month for the next because I am cheering for Po to rip Lent's limbs off one by one and make him suffer.
HO-LEY CRAPP!!!!
That was the worst thing ever!!!:frown:
I can't believe....it was just horrible, I never thought it would get so bad!!! I was honestly in shock at the end!!!! He's sooo evil!!! One, then the other!!!!!!
I have to say, lately it's been the art that grabs me, but these last few issues....OMG!!!
And a great, creepy little backup!
Nicely done Sirs, nicely done.

As much as I want this to end badly for Lent, I have a feeling it will not and that could be the rift that falls between Po and Proof.

I really liked the change of pace for this past issue. I also like the whole freak show element of the recent flashbacks. The flashbacks reminded me of HBO's Carnivale so much so that it got me wondering if that was an influence upon the arc.

I am eager for the next issue - we get to jump ahead one year and see what is going on with The Lodge. I have to admit that it feels like forever since we have seen Proof, Ginger, and Elvis in action though.

Excuse me if I missed this earlier, but is Riley Rossmo off Proof now that Cowboy Ninja Viking is coming out?
NO! Cowboy Ninja Viking is just a four issue miniseries from Image Comics. Riley is still on Proof and will continue to be for the foreseeable future
Alex Grecian
10-14-2009, 01:43 PM
That's right. CNV is a completely unrelated miniseries (although it's just been expanded to five issues, rather than four) and Riley's fast enough that working on it hasn't affected Proof at all. (Some production problems have affected Proof, causing #24 and #25 to run late, but we're trying to iron those out and get back on schedule.)
And Carnivale is one of those shows I know I'd like if I watched it, but I've never got around to it. Now I'll have to, huh? My guess is that the creator of that show and I were influenced by a lot of the same stuff.
-Alex
michaeljsmith
10-14-2009, 02:12 PM
Rumor is that Cowboy Ninja Viking was expanded because of the appearance of the dynamic character Sumo Rabbi Cyborg
As for Proof, I like that the last issue was a nice stand alone issue. I think that is a great formula to throw a stand alone in between story arcs to get our bearings and also to help new readers find a point to jump on board. I do however feel like it has been forever since we saw Proof and company in action. Julia was 100 years in the past, the latest issue was about our boy Joy the fairy, and next issue is 1 year in the future. Thank goodness for issue #26 and the BIG DATE with Bigfoot.
My guess is that the creator of that show and I were influenced by a lot of the same stuff.
Like Twin Peaks??!!
Yes, it (edit: HBO's Carnivale) was a very cool show, you should watch it.

Will there a be an issue number being shot for with Proof? As in the title will end at a certain planned point (I think Y the Last Man did this for example) or will it simply continue on as long as possible?
Personally I always enjoy titles more when I know there will be an actual end at one point. That way I know that my time is well spent since I know there will be a beginning, middle, and finally a end to tie everything up. That way characters can go through real changes instead of the simple illusion of change that so many ongoing titles have.
michaeljsmith
10-22-2009, 09:25 AM
This is the the "unofficial word" since I cannot speak for Proof though I think I can at times
Proof: Season One will conclude with issue #28. At that point Alex and Riley will be taking a small break and producing a four issue miniseries called The Yard about Victorian Age Scotland Yard (think of a McCracken-like story without McCracken from the Julia arc).
Proof: Season Two will then begin starting at issue #1 and running continuously after that.
Again that is the unofficial word sine my name is not Alex or Riley (and it isn't even Dave though more people should write letter to Dave Casey)
Alex Grecian
10-22-2009, 09:36 AM
Yes, what Brik said.
"Season two" will run the same length as "season one."
Whether there's a "season three" or not will depend on whether we think we've got more stories to tell at that point. But Season Two will carry us through everything we planned out since the beginning of this series. When we've finished, you're going to see some very clear character arcs. Nothing will be the same as it was in Proof #1.
Breaking it in half may help new readers catch up to the book. We've got the best readers in comics, and the trades sell well, but we constantly hear that new people don't know where to jump on. We're giving everybody a clear point for that.
I'll have more to say as we wind up the next four issues (which we think we've filled with some pretty unexpected cliffhangers) and begin gearing up for Season Two.

I'm a bit late to be commenting on the lastest issue, I know (after going to the doctor yesterday for a follow-up visit on an infected stye & being sent home with a prescription for Cipro because I've apparently been harboring a fever for days if not weeks, at least I've now got an excuse), but I wanted to say how much I liked the change of pace ... not that I didn't really, really like the Julia arc, because I did.
And not that I don't really, really like Riley's art, too, but I also dug whoever handled the pencils (& inks?) this time around.
I would go look the credits up, but, y'know, I'm too feverish to navigate the 'net with any sort of precision ...

Get better, Dan!
Chris Grine (Dark Horse's Chickenhare) stepped in to draw and color #24. That story was originally planned as a Proof annual and I was going to draw it myself, but I realized belatedly that I'm not that good an artist. Chris graciously offered to draw it for me and I didn't want to wait to release it as an annual, especially with our big 25th issue coming up.
I think he did a wonderful job with it and his style is just perfect for that fairy tale-esque story.
(Shameless plug: Chris and I also have an OGN coming out in January, through Image, called RocketBots. Check it out.)

Welcome aboard - as I said in the other thread this is month-in and month-out my favorite book on the market. Just finished the second and third volumes. Absolutely great book here.
I've talked to Dan Didio about something I don't see enough of in comics, which is back and fourth scenes. I used the series, "52" as an example. I loved how you would get 3 pages of Booster Gold, then 2 pages of Black Adam, then a page of The Atom, then 2 more pages of Booster Gold. It was very tv episode-esque.
Proof did a great job of doing this, especially in the third volume with the Thunder Bird arc. Going back and fourth between Proof, Elvis and Marc, the Golem, just fantastic writing, you're left hanging in the middle of the book and then you get more, like each section keeps you reading to find out what happens next. I absolutely love it.
Most comics these days, you either get one story focusing on one party or person, or you et 2 pages of something else going on that has little or no focus to it and then isn't mentioned again until next issue, Proof on the other hand keeps the pacing of every premise interesting and gives you just enough of everything at the right time.
Will there be a volume 4 released or do I have to hunt down the individual issues? Either way, I'll be here throughout Season 2. Fantastic &%$#ing book!

With Bad Dog, Four Eyes, Phonogram , Godland, Bomb Queen & Perhapanauts as examples, I'm almost tempted to postulate some sort of inverse proportion between quality & frequency of schedule ...

I love this storytelling element too for the same reason. You are right that Grecian uses this well. Kirkman often uses it in Invincible too. If it's used right, it keeps the story moving at a nice pace and keeps interest.
It's probably not the easiest way to write a book, but when it's done well like in Invincible and Proof, it just makes the books that much better.

Phil Hester has said (on the Image boards) that they still plan to release this; he's just waiting on the art from Brook...
I was on the fence about this book, but then I started to really dig it, and now it kind of disappeared. Still plan to get 5 when it comes out, but I've definitely lost most of my excitement for it.
(EDIT: link to the Golly! thread at ImageComics.com: http://imagecomics.com/messageboard/viewtopic.php?t=45937&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0)
I did, however, finally read Proof 24 last night (after re-reading Thunderbirds Are Go! in TPB form for the first time... )
The lack of Riley was a little jolting, but I thought 24 was a really fun issue that seemed to really drop a lot of clues... or at least potential clues. And the art fit the story very well. Very interesting to learn about the Chupacabra / Fairies relationship... Can't wait to get back to Elvis, Marc, Joe, Ginger, Leander, and... what's that little furball thing?...
