CHALLENGE 8: ALIENATION

This is Project CBRunway. You're either in or you're out. Who will be CBR’s next big comic character designer?

Good morning, designers. Welcome back to the runway.

Kryptonian. Kree. Slyggian. Skrull. Thanagarian. Tribbitite. Bgztlian. Brood. Alien races have been staple of superhero and science-fiction comic books from the start.

For your eighth challenge you must create an original, intelligent alien race. Your alien race may be humanoid or non-humanoid. Your submission may be male or female and should be a fair representation of this race, having the same physical characteristics, traits and abilities as the average member of this race ( i.e. no Phoenix Force or power rings or power cosmic or the like...). Your alien's costume or uniform, should you decide to clothe them, may consist of natural or synthetic materials.

You will be judged on originality and creativity.

In addition to the required written description explaining material, functionality and design inspiration, you should include a brief description of your alien race's physical characteristics, distinguishing features, traits and abilities. While not required, you may also choose to share non-design information such as their history, civilization, technology level, reproduction, relationship with other races or planets, etc.

Submission Requirements

Artwork may be done in any medium but must be in color. As in real comic work, using reference is fine but swiping is frowned upon.
Artwork may be no larger than 550-pixels wide and 800-pixels long.
Entries must be inserted into your PM, using such services as Photobucket.com or imageShack.com. If you are unable to use such a service you may e-mail (mattbib@comcast.net) your entry and we will host the image for you for the duration of the competition.
All submissions should include a written description of the costume, explaining, to the best of your ability, material, functionality, design inspiration, etc. Some rounds may have additional written requirements.
Write-ups are to be no longer than a single PM, which is limited to 5,000 characters, including your image address and all formatting and image tags.You have only five days, through Midnight PDT of Monday, April 28, to Private Message (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=342) (PM) me your entry for this week’s challenge. For yoru own benefit, be sure to select “Request a read receipt for this message” in the Additional Options section before sending. Failure to complete a challenge will result in immediate elimination from Project CBRunway. There will be no extensions or exceptions.

Hi-Fi & WhiteRose, you won the last challenge and are safe from elimination...unless you fail to submit entries.

I think I'll go for a cerebral design.

I'm a big sci-fi nut, and I always liked the weirder alien races in sci fi.Little green men with rubbery limbs just don't do it for me, neither do the forehead aliens from Star Trek... give me Farscape any day of the week...

For a change, I already know exactly what I'm doing. I have a preliminary write-up done, and the basic pencils. Now I just need to clean up, scan, and get to work on the computer. I'm pretty excited about what I've come up with, but have no idea how it'll go over.

OK, so I'm done with the basic pencils. I'm kinda satisfied with it. I went for "scary" because I love "OMG THEY'RE ALIENS, RUN!!!" kind of aliens. It's pretty simple, but I think it turned out kinda cool!

lol no the penises aren't bad. It's just that they were coming out of the characters head! lol

LOL IT WAS A WOMAN! The tentacles were suppose to be vaginas but well... you can see my dilema.

Coloring is the worst, lol, Shade had to show me & online tutorial site on how to color with photoshop in like February! lol. And mine never turns out as good as those people...

Things are about to get very interesting... my old mouse died. I've been using hubby's this week, but a few minutes ago he finally got around to installing the software for the new one I bought.

The new one is ten times more movement-sensitive than the old one. And I've gotta get used to using it fast. :eek:

Ah well, for now, back to cleaning pencils.

I've done more sketches for this challenge than for all the rest of the challenges combined! It was just that much fun. The problem was choosing my favorite, which would be the best? We'll see how that shakes out... but I sent it in.

I finished my illustration this morning. I just wrote my description (which is more than 4,000 characters in length!). I've got to scan and color my picture tomorrow.

I have to say that I consider my illustration one of the best I've ever done. I hope I don't eff it up in the coloring process. Man, I'm glad I've got tomorrow off of work.

I ran into sort of the opposite of that: I worked for hours on my first sketch and concept, finished it, hated it, scrapped it and started over. This one's decently nifty though, so we'll see. I found it easier to come up with interesting concepts (as in, if I were writing them in a story), but much harder to draw them. At times it felt like I was shooting pool, trying to figure out all the angles, etc.

(And here's a hint: in looking at my first try, I decided all it needed was a My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake to be uber-icky sweet... so I dropped that and went a different route.)

Argh.

And yeah, me too: I'm really interested to see what other people came up with!

Yay! Finny aliens! Woohooooo!

This challenge I knew exactly what I wanted to do. The image came to me almost immediately. There was SOME editing- I dropped the number of sexes from six to four for example- but the finished product is pretty much what I had in mind at the beginning.

I'm content with my submission. If I get kicked out for it, well, them's the breaks. But at least I will be going out on a personal high note. :)

One of the sexes of mine is "non-sexed". But they all pretty muchj look the same. Except for the females.

its funny that you are all talking about gender. I think i actually created something where gender is totally irrelevant to the design.

I have about five times as much stuff written out about my alien race than I submitted. In the end I had to boil down what I thought was most relevant to my illustration. I decided that I needed to explain the four sexes and how my aliens form family groups. But I've got a whole history mapped out and a lot of stuff about the culture and technology and everything.

Oh, I loved this challenge I did.
