Back when I was a Moderator, my one lasting contribution to CBR was the creation of a thread on the Back Room forum (mods only) entitled "What the Fuck?"
This thread was the repository of all the weird and/or insane things we found posted on our respective boards. It may stillb e going for all I know. At the time I stepped down, it was still going strong and was one of the longest-lasting threads on all of CBR.
It's the one thing I miss about being a Mod.
So I figured, why not start a new one? This is the place where I will post the things I run across on the net (or occasionally off the net) that make me say "what the fuck?"
Let's begin.
We are the World
Remember "We Are the World"? The benefit concert and album for world hunger from about 20 years ago? Ever wonder what it would look and sound like if performed by Japanese celebrity impersonators?

Brasilia Hopes were fading last night for a Brazilian priest who floated aloft on Sunday tied to 1,000 giant party balloons and has not been seen since, though several of the helium-filled balloons were found floating at sea. Father Adelir de Carli, 41, soared into the sky from the southeastern town of Paranagua, sitting in a harness attached to the white, red, yellow, green and pink balloons, and wearing a thermal outfit and helmet.
He was trying to draw attention to his campaign to provide rest stops for long-distance truck drivers, and to enter into Guinness World Records. A known adventurer, he had already made a previous similar flight with 500 balloons in January that reportedly took him as high as 5,000 meters (16,400ft). But bad weather this time pushed his makeshift contraption out to sea off Brazil’s southern coast, and in his last contact with police on Sunday night he said that he was encountering problems. Parishioners in his church were praying for him. (AFP)

Creepier, there used to be a Pez dispenser shaped like a (admittedly ray) gun. You put the barrel in your mouth, pulled the trigger, and a tasty Pez would be dispensed.
On the counter-culture side, there was Hippie-Sippie. Released at the height of the Haight-Ashbury Era (1968), Hippie-Sippies were little plastic toy hypodermic needles filled with candy pills, with buttons attatched saying things like, "Hippie-Sippie Says, I'll Try Anything Once!"

As a mother who allowed, nay encouraged, an art student to use plaster sculptures of her own newborn baby in a performance piece that required students to take the sculpture, which was covered in sticky red goo, down a dark red-lit black-lined hallway and dump it in a trashcan, I find that a bit of a cheap shot, Spike.

TBH, I don't even remember. I was probably exhausted and annoyed at the time - it's that time of year when my students go out of their collective ways to be as much trouble (without actually doing anything suspension-worthy) as possible. So, I likely just spat out a response without actually thinking about it.
I have no problem with art for any purpose, including simply for its own sake. Hell, I happen to think Mapplethorpe's photography (to grab the quickest shock-art cliche I can think of) is exquisite. Not a big fan of a lot of his subject matter, but I can't deny the quality of the art itself.

Oh, and one for the WTF file -
I offered to take pictures of my seniors, many of whom couldn't afford to have senior pics done. Even told them I'd burn them a cd of their pics at no charge as my gift to them. That way they could take the cd to wal-mart or wherever and print their own.
Now comes the WTF part - the bloody kids pitched a fit about how I couldn't get them their cd's today and how they didn't get to PICK which picture is going on the senior slide show!
What is it with this generation that they've NEVER been taught to appreciate any form of kindness done them?

Texas mayor's colorful past called into question
The mayor of this Dallas suburb has long talked about her colorful background, saying she used to sing backup for Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and other famous musicians. Her campaign Web site lists less glamorous credentials, including a stint at Western Kentucky University.
Officials say Mayor Becky Miller has talked of once being engaged to singer Don Henley, and of a brother who died in Vietnam.
All those details have one thing in common: Family members, representatives of the musicians and school officials have told The Dallas Morning News that they're untrue.
Miller, who became Carrollton's first woman mayor in 2005, says she never made some of the claims and attributed other discrepancies to dirty politics by challenger Ron Branson.
"I get angry when people get into my personal life," Miller told the newspaper for a story in its Wednesday editions. "My personal life does not have a thing to do with my job as mayor or being elected on the City Council for 10 years."
Branson said Miller's claims are false and reflect poorly on Carrollton, a suburb of about 116,000 just northwest of Dallas.
"I really don't think our city and our council wants somebody they can't trust what they say representing them," he said.
Branson said he is most upset by Miller's claim that she had a brother who died in war. Miller's father, Edward Sampson, told the newspaper that his son is alive and never served in the military.
Miller first suggested her 80-year-old father didn't get his facts right and said he suffers from Alzheimer's disease. She later said the man who died was not her biological brother but a "blood brother" was as close to her as a real one. She declined to give his name.
Three former Carrollton council members and one current member said Miller told them she was once engaged to Henley. Larry Solters, a spokesman for Henley and the Eagles, said the musician has "never heard of her, doesn't know her, certainly was never engaged to her."
In an e-mail to the newspaper, Miller wrote: "I have never said that I was engaged to Don Henley. I dated him."
Spokesmen for Browne and Ronstadt said Miller never sang backup for them. Neither Miller's first husband nor her father recalled a professional singing career.
Miller told the newspaper she went by several other names, including the nickname "Pinky." She declined to say what those other names were.
"I'm not going to tell you what they are," Miller said. "You have to find that out."
Miller's contention that she attended Western Kentucky remained on her Web site Wednesday. She told the newspaper she attended for two months in 1968. Laura Dilliha, a student records specialist at the school, said there's no record of Miller having been there.
Miller said these questions are coming up just days before the election because Branson is desperate.
"He thinks ... this is the only way he can win this election," Miller said. "That infuriates me."
