After 30+ years of being in comic book fandom, I just learned that Gary Friedrich and Mike Friedrich are not related.
Duh.
And I learned it from reading an old Bullpen Bulletins page.
However I also learned that Herb Trimpe's brother Mike was helping him ink some Ant-Man stories. Whatever happened to Mike Trimpe?

I had a similar experience recently with the actors Harold Gould and Elliott Gould, who I was conviced were father and son. I still haven't definitively discovered that they're not - but I haven't found any confirmation that they are either, so I'm pretty sure I was mistaken.

Kan-Man can check that easy:

Harold would have been 15 when Eliot was born. And neither of their real names are Gould. Oddly, both are named Goldstein. Eliot's dad was Bernard Goldstein. Harold's sons are Josua and Lowell.

Yes - they're married to Peggy Lee and Michele Lee.

Like Larry Lieber, Mike doesn't have the same last name as his brother. "Mike Trimpe" is actually Mike Esposito.
All right, I made that up.

Which is obviously not the case, since Gil's last name was originally Katz.

I just rediscovered how much I liked herb Trimpe's art re-reading some old Tales To Astonish last night.

Now, that one I know - Sigourney's dad was television pioneer Pat Weaver.

Here's one of my favorite bits of cartoonist relative-related trivia:
Sergio Aragonés' father was one of the producers of the 1956 Mexican/American dinosaur-vs.-vaqueros production, THE BEAST OF HOLLOW MOUNTAIN; as a young man, Sergio even visited the set of this film, which was based on a story by Willis (KING KONG) O'Brien!
Years later, Sergio would make a full-size King Kong head out of wood, chicken wire and synthetic fur; he had it mounted outside of MAD publisher Bill Gaines' office window as a birthday present to Bill!
Aloha,
Scott!

Wasn't it Aragones who donned a rented gorilla suit, and proceeded to dive into a swimming pool so disguised during a performance at some aquatic show way back when? The humorous fiasco was nicely related in Streetwise IIRC.

In all seriousness, I once read an article that stated Sal Buscema was John's sister. It was from Europe, but still... I lived under that misapprehension for many years and was quite surprised to finally learn that Sal was no Sally.

I'd have to dig it out, but I don't recall that one LR... but I am intrigued! It did have a great Roy Thomas/John Severin illustrated piece. And other faves from that trade, besides Kirby's StreetCode, were the Barry Windsor Smith work. And the Sam Glanzman hippy piece, as well as Toth's musings and Brent Anderson's reminiscences.

I don't recall anything by either Buscema in Streetwise. Offhand, my favorite pieces therein were the reminiscences by a couple of nonsuperstars, Sal Amendola & ... whichever Kupperberg (Paul? Alan?) contributed.

It seems like Sal Amendola had the potential to be a superstar, though.

Jewish and Italian names--of which there are so many in the comics business world--surely baffled many like me who grew up in less ethnically-diverse regions.

Then there's Bill Gaines' penchant for employing the Welsh.

Obviously that falls flat if one is aware that 'Davis' is the English version of the name and 'Davies' the Welsh...

Things must be going rockily for the (un?)happy couple, given how scandalously they've been busting deadlines at DC the last little while. Their father(-in-law) must be appalled.

It's interesting that Ray Davies, he of the Kinks, and brother to the nominally challenged Dave Davies, who was born in North London actually pronounces his "Welsh" name Davies the English way, ie. Davis.

On a slightly related note, "Al Williamson" and "Al McWilliams" are basically the same name, right? Don't they both mean "Al, son of William"?
Rob Allen
04-24-2008, 06:13 PM
From www.ancestry.com/learn/facts:
McWilliams Name Meaning and History
Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Uilleim, a patronymic from a Gaelicized form of William, with the redundant addition of English patronymic -s. In many cases it represents a partial Gaelicization of Welsh Williams.
Williamson Name Meaning and History
Northern English, Scottish, and northern Irish: patronymic from William.

"Our Pal Sal" apprently means something different than I'd always assumed ... Maybe it was supposed to be "Our Gal Sal"?
And to think that it all started just because of a mis-print in a comic book.
Now, does anyone want to tackle the debate about why DC allows "guttering candles" but never EVER "flickering light" in their mystery/horror books?

Y'know, down here in my & MWGallaher's stomping grounds, the fact that John & Marie Severin are siblings wouldn't have any bearing whatsoever on a scenario whereby they were also married ...
I summon the post by the forum regular (& no, I don't mean Mr Gallaher* ...) whose father's Alabama-born parents were first cousins
*Who, if memory serves, is orginally from around Memphis, which makes him practically a damnyankee anyway in comparison to those of us from extreme southwest Arkansas ...
