CHALLENGE 7: DYNAMIC DUOS

This is Project CBRunway. You're either in or you're out. Who will be CBR’s next big comic character designer?

Good morning, designers. Welcome back to the runway.

Batman and Robin. Cap and Bucky. Green Lantern and Green Arrow. Cloak and Dagger. Superhero partners are a comic book tradition.

For your seventh challenge you must create an original pair of superhero partners. Their names and/or costumes must compliment each other. These characters may be male or female, powered or unpowered. The costumes may consist of natural or synthetic materials.

HOWEVER, you'll also be working with a partner of your own. You'll come up with your character concepts and designs together, but each of you will be responsible for one of the final submissions. To pick your partner you must post a number between (1) and (18). Each number may only be chosen once, on a first come, first served basis. Each number has been assigned a famous member of a comic duo. Whichever designer picks the number assigned to the other member of that duo is your partner for this challenge. Both designers' submissions should be merged into a single image and submitted in one PM. For this challenge the artwork size requirement has been adjusted to 1100-pixels wide and 800-pixels long. How you communicate is entirely up to you.

You will be judged on teamwork, creativity, and originality.

In addition to the required written description explaining material, functionality and design inspiration, you should include a brief explanation of why both you and your characters' partnerships works.

Submission Requirements

Artwork may be done in any medium but must be in color. As in real comic work, using reference is fine but swiping is frowned upon.
Artwork may be no larger than 1100-pixels wide and 800-pixels long.
Entries must be inserted into your PM, using such services as Photobucket.com or imageShack.com. If you are unable to use such a service you may e-mail (mattbib@comcast.net) your entry and we will host the image for you for the duration of the competition.
All submissions should include a written description of the costume, explaining, to the best of your ability, material, functionality, design inspiration, etc. Some rounds may have additional written requirements.
Write-ups are to be no longer than a single PM, which is limited to 5,000 characters, including your image address and all formatting and image tags. You have only five days, through Midnight PDT of Monday, April 21, to Private Message (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=342) (PM) me your entry for this week’s challenge. Be sure to select “Request a read receipt for this message” in the Additional Options section before sending. Failure to complete a challenge will result in immediate elimination from Project CBRunway. There will be no extensions or exceptions.

The team receiving the least amount of votes will be eliminated.
marvelboy2004, you won the last challenge and are safe from elimination...unless you fail to submit an entry...though your partner is not.

Post any questions, comments, or concerns about this challenge in this thread. The voting thread will be posted this coming Tuesday.

Designers, make it work!

got a point there, so is this more of a redesign challenge, because it says [paraphrsae]"original character...can be male or female."[/paraphrase]
so should we be true to the characters at all or take a "just imagine Stan Lee" approach where we just run with the names and screw the history?

Your Imaginary Pal
04-17-2008, 12:46 PM
okay the pairing of artists is based on the name of famous comic book duos, but, we're not designing from those charcter names.

Spagettikiss and Solaris were teamed up because they randomly chose Cloak and Dagger, but, they are making up a completely new comic book duo, completely unrelated to Cloak & Dagger.
It could be say sugar and honey or fish and chips, but not Cloak & Dagger.
right?!?!?

Sorry, I feel that I maybe was negative about this challenge without explaining why. I just feel I may not really be able to give this my best-
I knock my designs out in about 3 hours on a Saturday- all the time I can give to the competition. This is usually fine. However- say I get paired with someone on the other side of the Atlantic? Time zones being what they are and all, it might not be possible for me to collaborate with them. On top of that, say someone doesn't pick my pairing till later on? I'm immune, but the poor person who gets paired with me isn't! A collaborative process like this needs time...

Oooh. Nice challenge Matt. Partnerings are fun, but I feel this may be a little harder, considering the whole Internet-ness that's involved.

I'm excited to see what everyone comes up with! I'm thinking I'd just make a pair of twins that can change into different animals and phases of water when they say something awesome and pound fists. They'd be awesome. I've never, ever heard of any characters like that before.

And it's probably for the best that I'm out. I've got finals next week and I have a dress to finish this weekend.

Use your time wisely guys. Use PM, AIM or e-mail to trade and determine your concepts/characters within the next 24-48 hours to leave yourselves another 48+ hours to get your entries done. Even if you're never online at the same time come up with ideas and the such; take the lead and propose a few options that your partner might agree to.

Also, figure out now who's going to do the final write-up and image combination so there's no questions when Monday night rolls around.

I have to say, this is the challenge I've been most excited by. :)

ZacharyLovesYou
04-17-2008, 07:26 PM
I really think that it needs to be made clear that contestants will not be redesigning the character they drew. They will be designing an original duo. The fact that they drew heroes names to be paired was for humor's sake.

hey Matt
i was looking back at some of the

designs until the voting threads. Why is that.

New Rule created during Challenge 4, but wasn't used till the beginning of challenge 5.

And Shade, We are TEAM STAR. And I am having so much with this challenge, working with Shade

I love what we came up with, i think it will show a nice synergy between solaris and I, especially on a conceptual level.

Synergy! Synergy! I'm "high" on Synergy! LOL.

I hope we don't have many of these, just because the communcation restraints (even if you're in the same time zone, I can't imagine what it's like for the overseas folks) slow things down---but the big upside is, you take each other creatively into new zones... and I am totally loving it! So guys: Pencils at forty paces? (And *do* remember Spaghettikiss's self-portrait in the first round: he has a lotta mutated arms... so that means a lot of pencils.) LOL.

EDIT: I can just see the cartoon version: "Tonight on 'Celebrity Death Match': Team Star vs. Team TEAM!"

(If you've never seen Celebrity Death Match, it was/is a claymation show where they put claymations of various celebs in a wrestling ring and had them dismember each other---it sounds gross, but was actually funny. They'd bring in all kinds of stuff about the celeb and spoof the heck out of 'em... I remember one match where they had two female pop stars going at each other... and just when it looked like a tie, they had Marilyn Manson drop from the rafters onto them and take 'em both out.

The show was gross and gory (from a claymation violence standpoint), but the spoofing humor they brought in was great.

I don't care what anybody says, the time zone difference is making things nigh impossible, we have a huge disadvantage over the people who are in the same zone.

Communication is extremely difficult because of the time difference, there is only a narrow window of time in which we can exchange our thoughts in real time. Everything else just is too slow to be really practical.

So do your happy dance, because I sure won't.

I quite agree, I've wound up enjoying doing the drawing, and I've wound up with such a great enthusiastic partner, but I do feel we've just not had the time/opportunity to really work together and come up with a combined effort...

For this season, too, please, should we have any more team challenges. I know viewers may not enjoy the extra time, but I think we designers all would. The fashion designers on the TV show don't have to work around communicating by internet, or with people being halfway round the world from each other. I think a two-week window for team challenges is a very good idea.

ah. i dunno about that, the time allotted is fine with me. i loved the pressure...

no computer at home (so i have to go to an internet cafe to go online and do my photoshop), reports to finish at work (i work the graveyard shift), meet up with parents, waiting for marvelboy to go online, thinking of a backstory, looking for inspiration, drawing my design, meeting up with friends, getting laid, trying to help a friend look for a new place...all of those stuff happened, along with my normal day to day stuff, from the time marvelboy sent his PM till the time i submitted our entry...

Yes yes, blahblah blah you are amazing.

That really chokes my chicken you know, people assume that they are the posterboys and girls for succes. "If I can do it, then everybody should be able do it."

To me that just comes across as gloating and bragging.

Don't get me wrong. I like working together, and working together with Spidey has been easy and relaxed, no fault lies with him.

What I don't like is that I'm going to be responsible for someone else's entry, that if I go Spidey goes with me. I've been drowning in work the last couple of days, and with the added difficulty of having to communicate with someone on the other side of the globe, and working together to get something done in 5 days, is just bordering on too much.

So when I see people jumping up and down like hyperactive toddlers on a trampoline, telling me that everything on their side is absolutely fabulous, it really isn't helping, and they only push me further into the camp of not liking this already strained situation.

I can imagine that people who are in my situation, or who are even busier than I am, or who are having some technical difficulties, this is just plain hell.

Because if I can't finish a piece due to unforseen circumstances, it's just my ass that gets the boot, but now... it's also someone else's ass that can get eliminated.

is that so?

i'm sorry if i made you feel that way. it was never my intention to gloat or brag. what i merely meant was "the deadline is part of the challenge and with several stuff that i gotta do and our problems with timezones, we made it, i'm soo happy" understand that my paying job is full of impossible deadlines. i've learned to multi-task. maybe i'm just lucky.

and i never liked that line...that "If I can do it, then everybody should be able do it." my manager always tells me that whenever i get warnings for not being able to to do my job properly. but i took that as a challenge. i tried to maintain a positive outlook. but i don't do stuff their way, i do stuff my way.

i'm tempted to say other stuff but i won't. i will stop. i will not get preachy. believe it or not, i understand your situation. i am not joking, i really do understand.

now i see i've been inconsiderate...and again, i'm sorry.

red-handed
04-21-2008, 01:51 PM
I knew it was gonna happen eventually...
You people are way too nice,

I don't believe you were being inconsiderate Ajira...
If i felt that you were gloating then all that meant
was that i had to take my game up a notch...
I believe the stress of competing in this contest and
maintaing a normal life has made someone a little sensitive...
It happens to the best of us

Again Ajira i don't believe you should be sorry
because you were not being inconsiderate, you were
just stating facts...

As for the work, Spaghettikiss got to see firsthand the contortions I go through, in creating and finishing a piece. I think he's still in shock. LOL.

See, I go around ten bushes with some of my stuff, because I'm self-taught with photoshop, and still don't know all the bells and whistles. Also, my art skills are painstaking and slow, and often I'm figuring things out as a go.

We had the design figured out by early Friday morning, and that's when I started drawing. I *think* I finished the pencils very late that night (he was completely finished with his design Friday evening: before even my pencils were done)---and it's taken me from then, until just a few minutes ago, to get the rest of it done. Yes, I had some RL stuff I had to take care of... but I still put in a LOT of hours on the pic... and I do it every time. I have to, because I don't have the training or the schooling yet to do it faster. Makes me feel like a turtle, especially when some people are done with their design on Thursday nights! LOL.

But, for now, if that's the only way I can do it, that's it. *shrug* I hope someday to do better quality art in less time; and if I keep plugging away, and hopefully get to go back to school, I know I'll get there. In the meantime, if someone is faster than me, well hey: good for them. It doesn't really bother me (though I may sigh with a touch of envy at times), because for me, the only thing I really have to compete with is the prior piece I've done, trying to do better with the current one.

This wasn't aimed at anyone, BTW---I'm only talking about myself, and how I see things.

You've touched on something I've been thinking about a lot more than usual lately... time. Maybe we should start a discussion thread for time as it relates to creation? Everyone seems to be operating at different levels of development, but is anyone interested in a process-and-organization discussion thread? What I am asking is, if I build it, will people come? Should I make it a poll?

This round has reminded me of something:

Some of us had never met on CBR before the competition. There's been more than one person that, because of their name or their avatar, I thought was a guy, who is really a girl, or vice versa.

While we're wating on the voting thread to be posted, who wants to chime in to let us know which kind of critter you are?

BTW, I'm a gal/lady/female/girl/woman-type critter. (I left out the less flattering gender-specific descriptive words sometimes used about me. Hee. )

Communication was not going so well for me and Zach.
I don't think we got it in on time, if at all.

It's been fun, guess I'll be Playing Along at Home.
Can't wait to see all of your work.

I take it Zach was supposed to send it in? Well, I'll hope fervently that it did go in, and we keep seeing you around! *crosses fingers*

Definitely the "wrinkly monster." LOL And Dazz used to be the child with the giginormous eyes---until he changed his avatar.

All this time I thought Pryde was a girl... then Shade said "he," and I did a double-take. Ditto for Affinity. It took me a while to get that Aljira was a guy and not a girl also.

my first entry was absolutely based off of me, the left side actually does hold a resemblance (question, whose left am i speaking of???)

"Your OTHER Left."

And yes, I've had someone say that to me before, when I turned the wrong way. Hee.

YIP, you're welcome, and here's hoping. No one wanted to see someone eliminated because of lack of submission... and I'm hoping that he did send it in, and you just haven't heard yet because of the communication problems you mentioned.

LOL! I'm STILL the child with gigantonormous eyes...in my brain!

Although, I bear an uncanny resemblance to Janice the Muppet these days...

Also Solaris, I always picture you looking like your avatar with the same coloring and lighting....it;s like being talked to by some otherwordly spirit through the internet. It's rad. ;)

Didn't you guys even look at the first challenge entries?! We were all supposed to make ourselves into superheroes. Which answers your question on the gender thing. Gosh Solaris! You're a dummy! *throws frying pan*

I'm garnering quite a collection of frying pans... maybe getting hit in the head with them is something I can blame, rather than just senility.

I think Solaris and WhiteRose are the only ladies left in the game, right?

That's great. I wish there were more female comic book illustrators.

Really? I was thinking about that a few days ago actually. I think we are. Hey Sol, sisters for the win, ja?
