many American writers/artists seemed to have rather bad perceptions of other cultures. Same can be said about the writers from other countries.

Worst misconceptions/misperceptions of the worldly cultures in the comics are the representation of Gypsy people

Roma people (often referred to as Gypsies or Gipsies.) including Victor Von Doom, Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver were depicted as Caucasians. In reality they are dark-skinned.

Baron Von Hammer a.k.a. Enemy Ace refused to carry a swastika on his plane because the swastika was a Nazi invention. Actually swastika has existed in many cultures as a positive and universally positive symbol for over 3,000 years before Hitler was even born.

I suspect it's more the fact that the Nazi party didn't exist while Von Hammer was strutting his stuff in the killer skies.

This reminds me of a minor error not entirely unconnected to this thread: there's a Kanigher/Kubert Von Hammer story featuring a map stuck up on someone's wall during the First World War - with Poland on it.

Actually swastika has existed in many cultures as a positive and universally positive symbol for over 3,000 years before Hitler was even born.

I think it's used as such in one of the later Mister Miracle issues by Jack Kirby, ne Jacob Kurtzberg.

If that's the worst misconception you've found you've been reading better written comic books than I have, my friend.

Well, the people after whom the "gypsies" were named-- i.e., the Egyptians, whom medieval Europeans confused with the itinerant Roma from (I believe) some part of the Indian subcontinent-- were also portrayed as Caucasians in most comics. Not least of these is the original Golden Age Hawkman, with its blond, fair-skinned prince Khufu.

And who could forget (much as one might want to) Marty Pasko's "Osira" from WONDER WOMAN?
