View Full Version : Does Power Girl date anyone?
DarkCrisis

I was re-reading some old JLI/JLE issues and got to thinking about PG then to now.
Her last mini series showed how even in her home life shes pretty much a loner.
Why doesn't she date? When was her last date? Was she ever in a serious relationship? WIll she ever be?
Seems like every other hero is dating or having one night stands or getting married etc etc.
Just curious.

She hasn't been shown to be involved with anyone, though she may have had affection for Ted Kord.

Wasn't it hinted during the "Lightning Saga" that she either was, or wanted to be, involved with Hawkman while they were both on Thanagar?

The basic implication was that she was involved with him. And he broke it off, which seemed to hurt her a bit. This would suggest that at the moment she's in that stage where she's letting the disappoint of the last 'ship wear off before she goes looking again.
The other issue is that with Karen there's no interest in a secret I.D. She leaves and breathes super heroics. That probably makes dating any normal person difficult, so her playing field is narrowed to available people in the heroic community.

If Ms. Marvel could do it, Power Girl could do it. Or rather, if one writer could make it work, another writer could make it work. I think the bigger problem here is, that even though she has a starring role as chairwoman of the Justice Society, in that book she only gets a couple pages of development every now and then because of the sheer magnitude of the cast. She doesn't have her own series, hasn't had a mini-series or a spotlight role on a book like JSA Classified in years, so nobody's done anything too serious with her personal life lately.
I suspect that will change, hopefully, this summer when Johns takes her back to Earth-2 for however long.
How did she get pregnant again back before Zero Hour?
Magic. A wizard did it.
I mean, uh... what pregnancy? Never happened!

Did she ever date anyone on her other earth?
It is kind of hard to see her dating anyone, given her loner attitude and power level. Hawkman seems like an okay fit, except for the fact that he belongs with Hawkgirl. I think some type of Superman level hero would work well with her, any suggestions?

It was so vague, though, that it seems everyone interprets it differently. For myself, I took it as she came onto Hawkman and he immediately told her it wasn't going to happen. I remember Geoff in an interview not long thereafter with Newsarama said that PG's love life would be touched upon in the future, but he said that Carter wasn't a lone player on the field. And with the JSA Annual coming up, I wouldn't be surprised if we see some tension between she and Sylvester Pemberton.
And pregnancy? What pregnancy? I don't remember any pregnancy. La, la, la, la, I'm not listening!

Pre-Crisis, I think her and Skyman were a couple for a while. Afterwards, ya' got me. Her origins became so confusing, I just stopped paying attention.

.... Karen seems to get it pretty freakin bad being a hot chick in DC. It's like shes every male characters poster girl for "I'd like to screw you!" campaign. So every writer who wants to live vicariously through his writing usually mentions her or makes use of her in some way with his identifiable fictional counterpart. From the examples given, the Hal Jordan incident sounds appropriate. Karen does not strike me as a woman who needs to go out and try and get it on with Hal Jordan, or Hawkman and whomever else. If anything it'd have to be the exact opposite for it to be even remotely reasonable, you'd think shed have to beat them away with a stick or heat vision.

Well, as impressive as the lady's sweater meat might be, there are certain things working against her that scare guys off.
1) She could literally tear you apart, either in the throes of passion, or during a spat in the relationship. (Uma Thurman in that one movie...)
2) Her cousin is Superman. And we all know from superdickery.com that Clark seems to go out of his way to crush other people's happiness. Particularly if your are A: Lois Lane. B: Jimmy Olsen C: Batman or D: Another Kryptonian. And if there's a ****block you might not recover from, it'd be when Superman does it.
3) She had Psycho Pirate as her stalker for years. That may have also been why men stayed away from her for so long. They start making a move, he makes them go utterly crazy and leave her be.
4) Who has time to date when you have to find brazierres in that size, that can contain mammaries of steel?
I'm sure I'm leaving out other concerns, but you have to figure, this really would throw a monkey wrench into most women's social lives.

Carol Ferris, Eve Doremus, Dorine, Olivia Reynolds, Rose Hardin, Deborah Darnell, Iona Vale, Katma Tui, Arisia, Doctor Light II, Power Girl, Cowgirl and countless un-named one-night stands.
There's more, of course, but I'd need to start searching through old comics to remember their names.

A few months ago, in another thread on this forum, someone claimed Power Girl was an "eternal celibate," and I said in response:
____________________________
This whole concept of some fans viewing Power Girl as an "eternal celibate" comes as a complete surprise to me -- am I the only fan left who actually remembers what happened in "Justice League Quarterly #11"?
The lead story in that issue had several female members of the JLI working together on a case, and they became aware somehow that the villain (assassin called Chimaera, I believe) had some sort of power to make himself seem like a Dream Come True to a woman, before he did nasty terrible things to her. (The exact details of his powers escape me at this point.) Around the time they figured that out, Power Girl called in to say she'd be a bit late for the next meeting; she'd met this really funny, sensitive, charming, just-about-perfect hunk of a guy who (I think) had long been a big fan of hers and was just thrilled at finally meeting her face-to-face. She wanted to spend some quality time with him. (I could have a few details wrong, but bear with me -- been a while since I read this story.)
One of the other heroines (the good Dr. Light?) takes this call and then repeats the gist of it to the other ladies (Wonder Woman, Ice, Crimson Fox) and then suddenly gasps as she realizes the strong correlation to the mysterious assassin they were just talking about a minute ago! So these four heroines form a posse and go looking for Power Girl, hoping they'll arrive in the nick of time to rescue her in case she's currently being mind-controlled or slaughtered by Chimaera's magic powers, or however it was supposed to work. What they end up doing is more along these lines: They frantically kick down a door and find Power Girl in a rather intimate clinch with a perfectly nice, ordinary guy who is not using nasty supernatural powers on her (because he didn't have any). I think P.G. is very offended by this incredibly badly-timed interruption and says something like this: "Geez, is this the way you will react whenever I take an extra-long lunch break?" Everyone else says, "Oops, sorry! Never mind!"
So I've never thought Power Girl had no love life at all. I just figured we usually didn't get to see or hear very much about it where "onstage behavior" was concerned, for some reason, but there is the occasional hint to show that she doesn't just sit all alone in a quiet apartment, every single night of the year, whenever she's "off duty."

I believe that she dates but it would be too easy for writers/artists to make it into something tawdry. Did I just use the word tawdry in a sentence? Anyway, comic creators would probably have a field day with her. I remember Flash (Wally) was frequently inappropriate with her. And, didn't she like Firestorm at one point? Yeah, she dates, but she probably has to be real careful about it. It always has to be in the back of her mind whether someone likes her for her or for her assets. Hopefully, not too confusing.

Early 2000 during a issue of Superman & Batman, Superman I believe asks Power Girl to run interference on the new Toyman, her response was something like this, "How am I suppose to distract a teenage boy?" then she kind of clues in on how to do so. That's not the generally mind set of someone who is just looking to get laid all the time or even a majority of the time. (assuming that if she were still to be some over the top sexual fantasy made manifest she'd have been flying toward Toyman before Superman even finished the sentence.) See its these kinds of showings that have been more popular as of late than the types of crap that have appeared back in the 70-90's when all the women in comics did nothing but pump up sex appeal or play the damsel in distress.

The thing is, the current powergirl I can't see being involved with a mortal.
Her current depiction is of "I love being a superhero. Being a superhero is my whole life". Basically, Peegee defines herself first and foremost as a superhero and a love life is not something I think she thinks about at all.
She probably has urges but she gets that out by going out and kicking the crap out of some two-bit villain. As for Peegee love life, er, didn't she have a sort of Lois Lane/Superman relationship with her own reporter guy back in pre-crisis times?
I still think the "relationship" with Hawkman makes no sense given that she KNOWS that Hawkman is reincarnated each time to be with Hawkgirl. Same thing with GL who is a known player. My guess is that she's really only interested in one night stands with people that are among her circle of colleagues and isn't looking for anything permanent.

She's bangin' the feathers off of Hawkman. I was woundering since Superman can't have children with Earth women due to differences in physiology, does that go double for Power Girl since she's 1)a Kryptonian and 2)from a parallel universe (even though bad writting had her knocked up at one point) . Actually you have that backwards. the one who rejected her was Aquaman, on the grounds that a relationship between teammates was inappropriate, it went no further than a kiss. (JLE #46)
Hawkman believe it or not rejected her too. The whole point of Kara telling the story to Roy was to warn him that he could get hurt, because that is what had happened to her. Hawkman told her no, it went no further than a kiss. (JLofA #9)

It was entirely one-sided , Firestorm was smitten with PG and had a schoolboy crush , PG was older than he was. Firestorm never did go anywhere with that crush.

We all thought they did it then, but during the horrific "Power Girl's baby" storyline, I thought Hal confronted PG about being pregnant and saying something like "When we were in the green bubble, you said you weren't that kind of girl." or something like that.
I agree, however, it was later established that, at some point, they did get it on. Remember that Power Girl's number ended up in Hal's Little Black Book, which Hal later used to bribe Guy into helping him out. New Earth Hal seems to be even more of a degenerate womanizer than the Post-Crisis Hal was.
By the way a "Hal's Little Black Book" one-shot comic would be hilarious to read someday....

Afraid not. At the end of one of the annual JLA/JSA team-ups, she's in his arms as they look out from the satellite.

Don't remember that , if i'm not wrong , i think Firestorm only met PG during the JLA/JSA/new gods crossover , they only had like a few more interactions after that.

I realize that scene with Hal and PG is canon, but it comes across as lame fanfic.
Ever since her debut in the mid-'70s, Power Girl has generally been portrayed as fairly abrasive and kind of butch. It's hard for me to picture her in a caring relationship with anybody except for that mangy cat. Maybe she will finally get some decent character development in her upcoming ongoing series. Palmiotti and Gray are very good writers, they should be able to figure out a believable relationship for Power Girl.

It was in one of those Per Degaton stories that Roy Thomas loved to write. This one had the JLA, JSA, All Star Squadron and Crime Syndicate of America in a 5 part crossover with All Star Squadron. Not as much fun as you think it would be. Like always, Per Degaton loses and the story never in fact happened.

I have that but i don't particularly remember that scene you mentioned , i remember in the opening , Firestorm was hoping that PG was in the JSA group that transported over but instead , they got the crime syndicate who whooped the JLA's ass.
Have to go back to read it again. I thought that the 5 part story had a lot of wasted potential. Still , i enjoyed seeing the CSA and superman getting KO by superwoman was great.

That's right. We all know Hal Jordan's personal oath.

I remeber when she was on Earth 1 she dated some reporter and he set her up with the computer soft ware job. Andy Vinson was his name.He was a globe reporter.

I hope she dates.
i hope she dates a LOT.
It´s the one thing I think WW is missing, legions of superguys beating the crap out of each other to be her date.
Relationsip stories can be oodles of fun, it´s one of the things I liked about Superman´s stories in the 50-60s.
Lois Lane traveling in time to score with Superman when he was younger and finding out she has to battle Lana Lang...
Comics could use some of that wackiness.

I think the problem is some people think of her as a female superman and write her in a strange way. she is suppose to be an older supergirl but that's not how she acts.
