The roots of part of the Secret Invation lay in the story of the destruction of the Skrull Throneworld.
As that occurred in about FF 244, there's at least one trade that collects the story.

Why doesn't Marvel reprint "The Trial of Galactus" to bring readers up to date?

Second, do you feel it is necessary to read this to understand WHY the Skrulls hate Reed Richards so much?

How many people actually have this trade or have read the story?

I've never been a big FF fan, but for me Reed is just the Space/Science guy (earth-bound at least). As such, it would just seem natural that the invading/evil aliens would have an animosity and history with the residence scientist/adventurer.

I haven't read it btw.

Galactus gained Frankie Raye as a new Herald in Fantastic Four #244. However, Fantastic Four #257 is when Nova leads Galactus to the Skrull Throneworld, despite the Skrull's cloaking field:

Close... the skrulls never had a chance to activate the cloaking field.
Earlier, in about Thor #132, they blacked out the entire galaxy, trying to hide from Galactus...and succeeded. It was nice to see Byrne remembered, and got it right.

I loved "The Trial of Reed Richards" when I was a kid, although I haven't read in it ages. It was so amusing seeing Mr. Fantastic, the Watcher and Odin all trying to reason with the survivors of Galactus' destruction; and then Galactus just shows up and he's all, "I couldn't care less about your judicial processes; I'll kill you all if you touch Reed Richards". Abuse of power at its best. From a logical point of view, none of it makes any sense now

Anyway, I don't think you need to know this story to understand Secret Invasion. The Skrulls have had a long history of enimity with Reed Richards: he foisted almost all their plans to conquer Earth before Galactus destroyed their Throneworld. They just ressent him and probably fear him because he's always stood in their way.

I didn't read those issues yet. But Nova was able to detect the Skrull homeworld because the skrulls never had a chance to activate the cloaking field?

When the Skrulls sighted the Silver Surfer, they activated the cloaking field in time.

I guess they didn't realize Nova works for Galactus

The issue in question can be found in the Fantast Four Visionaries: John Byrne trades (257 is in volume 3, the Trial of Galactus in volume 4). They're great stories, but neither is necessary to understand SI. The Skrulls have been trying to invade Earth since FF #2, and their hatred of Reed Richards predates the destruction of their homeworld. That's all you need to know.

I think the driving motivation for the Skrull invasion is the Illuminati attack. Reed is singled out, but I think that's more to keep him from messing up their plan than revenge for the trial of Galactus. I guess we'll see soon though.

At any rate I recommend reading it, it's a good set of issues, that whole TP is good stuff.

The Skrulls know of Galactus' new herald, Nova. Since the Shi'ar are allies with both the Kree & Skrulls, I'm sure the Shi'ar informed them when Lilandra discovered the news from Gladiator in Uncanny X-Men #167 after his fight with the Fantastic Four in Fantastic Four #249-250.

Frankie Raye may have memorized the Skrull's star charts when she was training to become a member of the Fantastic Four or she could have found the Skrull galaxy herself after her transformation into Nova...
