Welcome to the runway!

PLEASE VOTE for the entry you feel best completes the challenge. Voting should not be based solely on art ability. Ultimately, however, voting is completely subjective. Participants may vote for themselves. The designer(s) with the least amount of votes may be eliminated.

As the winner of the last challenge Aljira cannot be eliminated in this round.

CHALLENGE 5: REFRESHING

For your fifth challenge you must update one of the designs from Challenge 4 (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=215745) to be worn by a character in the modern era. This character may be male or female, powered or unpowered. The costume may consist of natural or synthetic materials.

You will be judged on creativity and how well your design fits in the modern era while maintaining the spirit of the original.

In addition to the required written description explaining material, functionality and design inspiration, you should include a brief explanation of who your character is and why they're wearing an adaptation of a Golden Age identity.

Please vote using the poll, then feel free to make comments or ask questions about this challenge or these designs within this thread. Now let's start the show...

the character.
pathologist extraordinaire, dr. sophia cunningham is a cold-hearted, emotionless bitch. a freak accident in a lab 2 years before filled her body with almost all kinds of bacteria and viruses known to man, but instead of killing her, the accident gave her the unusual ability to manipulate those pathogens to both cure and infect (even kill). The accident, unfortunately, also made her almost numb to emotions of the good sort. but this didn't stop her, she saw this as an opportunity to become famous, just like her great grandma sandy...

...until one day, while unsucessfully explaining a disease to a patient, a group of drug-crazed terrorists invaded the hospital and started killing everybody. Unfazed, she secretly started killing them too. In a last fit of rage, a dying terrorist fired a bullet at dr. sophia, but a hospital volunteer took the bullet meant for the doctor - the volunteer turned out to be her only brother.

the doctor stared at the body of her brother. a tear fall down her cheek and then a sudden rush of pain, grief and anger...and for the first time in 2 years, she cried. she wailed. she tried to cure her brother but the wound was fatal. he was dead on the spot. in her sorrow, she vowed the death of all those who do these terrorist acts...

the look.
she got tech stuff on her body, to enable a precise release of the pathogens inside her. i added a yellow tinge on the white parts to make her look "warmer" and separate her from the icy cold bitches like Emma. added a eyeshadows and some blush. tweaked the skirt look and see-thru top part. got additional inspirations from Bianchi and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

History:
Regina Johnson is third in the line of costumed crimefighters named Doctor Atomic. Her grandfather Rex took the name initially, and though he had no powers, he was instrumental in defeating the axis and bringing peace to the world. Her father was the second Doctor Atomic, and it was during his experiments with radiation-based weapons, that he developed strength, endurance, and the amazing ability to fly. On his inaugural journey as the super-powered Doctor Atomic, he kept a young woman from jumping from a bridge, and later he married that same woman. He had no way of knowing that the child that they conceived would be even more powerful than he ever was.

As a child, Regina Johnson was homeschooled, her parents afraid that her inherited strength and ability to fly would make her a target of her father's enemies. Like her father and grandfather, she showed a propensity for science, but she also developed an interest in the human body and healing, an interest that would change the the family legacy forever.

After graduation, Regina went to college for medicine, and realized that she could see things her fellow students could not. She could see wounds and disease at the atomic level, and furthermore, she could manipulate the atoms to mend together, or augment the atoms to divide and improve the immune system of the patient.

Realizing that to fully utilize her skills, she needed to finish school, so she spent the next eight years of her life studying by day and helping to heal the poor in the streets by night. She graduated at the head of her class, and became a renowned surgeon, and the pride of her father's eye.

When her father was killed by his nemesis, the Silver Dragon, she swore revenge, and taking the family name, wearing a modified version of her father's costume and her grandfather's belt, she became the third Doctor Atomic, dedicated not only to fighting evil, but to healing and saving lives.

Costume:
For this challenge, I tried to imagine a legacy version of Doctor Atomic, as if the first was a member of the JSA, the second, the JLA, and the third, a Teen Titan. I wanted to go further into superhero territory than I ever had before, so I created a chest logo and dressed her in spandex, but kept her in tan pants as a tribute to her grandfather. I gave her a short sassy haircut and used the same color scheme as the original, but kept the same belt, as a symbol of pride in her legacy.

Backstory
Matt Mercy 2001 was cancelled in 1958. Seems the youth of the 50s were no longer interested in a hero from 2001 who fought Martians and visited colonies on Venus. They thought it was unrealistic for him to still be fighting Nazis over Atlantis after the turn of the century.

There was a phrase the children of the 50s were unfamiliar with though.

Alternate reality.

You see, Matt lived in a parallel universe where these things came to pass. However, as in the real world, in Matt’s reality the people of Earth and beyond began to lose faith. Matt’s dreams crashed and he faded into obscurity. This was terrible for humanity. The Nazi’s formed a treaty with the Martians in 2003 and war came to Earth. Invasion, imprisonment and disaster followed, while on Venus, the civil war took its toll and literally cracked the planet in half. Atlantis rose again, invaded by underground dwelling mutants who used its technology to drain the Atlantic Ocean. A new hero was needed and one came from the pauper camps of Europe in the form of Matt’s son Marc. An intuitive engineer and mechanic, he stole a prototype suit of Nazi techno-armour, adopted the colours of his father and began to bring hope back to humanity. It would be hard work, but he was determined to make his father proud- wherever he was.

Inspiration
I really just worked with the colours EndOfTime used for Matt Mercy. I updated from golden age styling to something more contemporary, particularly armour and wrist mounted weaponry. His armour is constructed from Martian Plastic which is impervious to most hand-held weaponry. His wrist-zappers fire out concentrated acid or sonics, dependant on the requirements. I loved the retro storyline that EndOfTime invented, and thought, you know what? That’ll still work as a modern update, if I just continue his ideas.

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa53/spaghettikiss/05-The-BULLET.gif http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v467/mattbib/My%20Drawings/Project%20CBRunway/th_bullet.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v467/mattbib/My%20Drawings/Project%20CBRunway/bullet.jpg)

Origin: Dr. Becker “BB” Bainbridge, a.k.a. the BULLET, was a normal main with above average intelligence who invented a substance called Bulletex that allowed him to become a hero. Unfortunately, the science he developed, although it gave him the ability to move at a rate faster than any normal man, did not make him invulnerable or super strong. On April 24th, 1958, The Bullet was shot and killed trying to stop a bank robbery at the Baltimore Bank and Trust. He left behind a wife, Mary and a son Jacob.

50 years later, the grandson of Becker Bainbridge, Brian, was trying to follow in his grandfathers footsteps. After finding his grandfather’s scientific journals and a scrapbook of 50 year old newspaper clippings in his grandmother’s attic, he began to admire the BULLET’s intelligence and bravery. He spent his life developing his mind with the goal to improve on his grandfather’s invention and become a hero himself.

Eventually, Brian “BIG BRAIN” Bainbridge succeeded. After recreating Bulletex, he was able to develop a sophisticated electrode system that could temporarily send a controlled overload of energy to specific muscle groups giving him strength greater than any human.

Bainbridge had achieved his dream, he had become: THE BULLET

Costume and Powers: The suit itself was supposed to be a kickback to the original design. Coated with bulletex allowing the user to run, punch and kick without being slowed by friction. The new technology was the diode electrical power system that essentially charges specific muscles into a kind of overdrive, allowing Brian to take full advantage of the Bulletex. Now instead of maintaining a speed of 30MPH, he can reach speeds of up to 240MPH. Not only can he now punch and kick with increased speed and power, he can lift up to 3 tons and punch through solid steal with the extra muscle strength.

The suit stayed very similar, I just added a collar and used a more Luciadore style with the shorts and boots (somehow that has become so popular over the past few years). The big changes are that I showed more of the face, added the emo-nerd glasses/goggles and tried to organically attach the tech system to the suit.

Inspiration: In a lot of modern superheroes, we see creators trying to reach out to youth, especially in cartoons (teen titans, TMNT, Spiderman, etc.). I wanted to take an iconic character and believably turn him into an awkward young man that a young person could identify with.

Bosh’s original design accomplished exactly what he tried for. It was Iconic and bigger than life with a simplicity that made it stand out. I really didn’t want to change that, just adapt it to more modern technology and to a Saturday morning cartoon audience.

STORY:
During World War II, the Nazi Regime had no more effective or sought after operative than Yves Cuivre, also known as the Copper Courtesan. With a fierce intellect coupled with a cold ruthlessness, The Copper Courtesan racked up a body count of important Allied officials that made her a single woman army in the Nazi cause.

All that came to an end in 1945, when the Copper Courtesan was cornered in the United States while on a mission to assassinate the American President. Rather than face capture, Yves Cuivre turned her gun on herself and ended her run as the single most effective assassin in history.

After the war, several Nazi scientists fled to South America to escape justice in the world courts. One of them, Dr. Hansel Roethe (also known as Dr. Korpse), arrived in Argentina with a case containing the collected genetic material of specimens considered near Aryan perfection. One such specimen was Yves Cuivre, the Copper Courtesan.

Dr. Korpse began his neo-Nazi campaign by creating hundreds of cloned embryos using Cuivre’s DNA and placing them in agents in the four corners of the western world. Once the cloned infants were born, they were raised to specifications meant to foster ferocious sexuality, intense intellect, and moral desensitization. Any child who failed to meet specifications were the unfortunate victims of house fires, car crashes, and other sad stories. When each clone reached the age of 17, they were immediately sent to Argentina to Korpse’s compound to begin training in hand-to-hand combat, firearms, and assassination of all kinds.
This was the beginning of the new Copper Courtesans.

INSPIRATION:
Dr. Mengele and his experiments played a big part, as well as fictional faceless evil organizations such as StormTroopers, Hydra and Cobra. What if the faceless evil terrorist organizations actually had a face and they were not only beautiful, but all the same?
Plus, I liked the original story of the Copper Courtesan a lot and wanted to go with something that paid homage to her in a lot of ways.

COSTUME:
I tried to update the original Copper Courtesan costume by keeping its simple, but effective, color scheme and layout in place while at the same time making it (a little) more practical for a modern assassin. The Copper Courtesans are not necessarily concerned about secrecy, so I wasn’t especially worried about putting her in a head-to-toe orange jump suit. Sexuality plays a big part of the Copper Courtesan modus operandi, so it had to be sexy but versatile. Also, I switched the domino mask for a set of special “anti-glare” sniper’s goggles.
Each Copper Courtesan is implanted with a tracking device with model number and coded mission status disguised as a beauty mark on her face.

Background
Ruth Fagan’s nightclub flourished, expanding her social network.

Ruth had a son, named Benjamin. Benjamin felt little to no love for the business his mother ran, and mother and son grew apart over the years. Ruth’s nightclub however, continued to thrive.

One faithful day a young woman knocked on Ruth’s door. The girl explained that her father had been Benjamin Fagan, and that he had been killed by a couple of hoodlums. A senseless death. Ruth was shocked, broken at the news of her estranged son’s death. The girl explained that Ruth was her only living relative, her mother having died giving birth to her.

Judith, as the girl was named, moved in with Ruth, who swore to protect her granddaughter.

When Ruth died, Judith took on the mantle of new owner of Lady Day’s, and thus the next incarnation of the notorious character of Lady Day.

Judith is as much of a shrewd business woman as her grandmother, and under Judith, Lady Day’s continues to prosper, catering to a wild variety of customers, some law abiding, others f a shadier kind. Judith utilizes the social network Ruth created with Lady Day’s.

Costume
A modern variant of Lady Day’s original costume. A short skirt and pumps. It’s business attire with some slight twists, like the bodice, and the mask. Kept the original colours of Lady Day, and worked in the sequences. As Dazzler said, Ruth is not a superhero, and neither is her granddaughter.

Inspiration
Dazzler created a character who is described as being an earthy, grounded supporting character who is surrounded by an air of mystique. The new Lady Day should be something of the same. Where the original is based on Billy Holiday and the Spirit, the new one is based on Madonna (Express Yourself- era) and Emma Frost (the no-nonsense bitch with a million one liners). Two icons from the golden age, two icons from the modern age.

I wanted to keep close to the character Dazzler created, in tone more than anything. I wanted to avoid doing comedy, and I didn’t want to make her too futuristic. Lady Day is a “real” character, and the new Lady Day should be no different. Lady Day is a title, and it’s the social network that provides the character with power. If you want information, if you want to make connections, you go to Lady Day’s to get it.

Judith provides a hero, or an anti-hero, with the information needed, for the right price of course.

I dropped the flower on the costume but worked it into a business card.

An emancipated Jewish African American Woman for the modern age.

History
Galaxy Girl and the Galactic Police Force were on the verge of defeating the Vushuari empire forever. They had destroyed their space fleet and victory was almost certain. Almost.

Jupitarr, the High Ruler of Vushu people would not go down quietly. Using the vortex cannon (a weapon of last resort) Jupitarr opened a black hole right under the Earth. The planet, the galactic police force and the remaining Vushuari Armada would be destroyed.

Not if Betty Page has anything to say about it. As Galaxy Girl, Betty flew directly into the black hole and used the last of her force beams, and collapsed the worm hole on itself. Galaxy Girl was lost. She had sacrificed herself to save everyone.

Decades later a small vortex opened near the moons of Saturn. A woman appeared from the void. It was Betty Page. She had spent almost a century in a cosmic cocoon and had emerged from her sleep with all of the powers of an exploding black hole. She would become the greatest member ever of the Galactic Police Force as well as Earth’s greatest defender. She would be known as Galaxy Woman!

Costume
Galaxy Woman, is Galaxy Girl all grown up. I didn’t want here to be too much of a departure from the original. Her color scheme is essentially the same. I want to keep her power belt and power head band, so I just updated them to make them more contemporary. I moved from the skirt/shorts to a more athletic looking body suit, and also let her hair down.

Origin:
A few years after she first became Miss Mystery, Helen King marries Archibald McBain. Despite their love, Helen never revealed to Archibald her secret life as Miss Mystery. The two eventually have a daughter, Amelia. On her wedding night, Amelia learns her mother's secret as Helen hands the mantle to her. Years pass and Amelia has her own daughter, Rachel. Rachel has a normal childhood, knowing nothing of her mother's dual life as Miss Mystery. Around the age of 15, Rachel begins showing signs of being a meta-human. Her mother notices and, like her mother before her, reveals her secret to her daughter. Thinking Rachel too young, she does not hand the mantle down, but instead trains her young child. At the age of twenty, Rachel is finally handed her grandmother's mantle. Taking up the name of Miss Mystery, Rachel goes on to protect not only the honor of her name, but also protect those being trampled by her great-grandfather's great-grandson Albert Konstantine.

Powers:
Rachel has the ability to create illusions, projecting them into the minds of others. Like her mother and grandmother before her, Rachel is also very proficient in hand-to-hand combat, along with several martial arts.

Costume:
As the new Miss Mystery, Rachel decided to update the costume. Keeping a few ideas from the old costume (the domino mask, as to keep her identity secret, the color scheme, the wig), Rachel changed everything else. She made a corset, tight fitting pants, laced gloves and boots, and shortened the length of the wig. Her look took on more of an illusionary appropriate appearance. Also, as a nod to the original, she included a choker with a question mark.

Inspiration:
Taking Miss Mystery to the modern age was quite fun. I felt it best to create a new person behind the mask instead of time displacing the original. And what better way to do this than to have the mantle passed down through the generations.
The real task was adapting the character while still keeping it true to the original. So one thing I felt a modern character needed was super powers. So I picked powers that would work perfectly with her presence. Illusions would add even more so to her mysterious nature. Also, by keeping the identity of Miss Mystery a secret, one that was only handed down mother to daughter, it again adds to her mysterious nature.
To update the costume, I felt it best to only keep a few parts/ideas of the costume the same. Then I revamped the rest to make it sleek, sexy, practical, and different. I felt the most important pieces to keep were the mask, the wig, and the color scheme. These three are what really tie the costume to the Golden Age version.

Inspiration
Well obviously for this challenge, it would be spaghettikiss’s Revolutionary.

Costume
I will admit, taking a golden age character whose costume is based off of the American flag, was kind of difficult. What I wanted to do with this character is make it look like something you would see running around in the Ultimate’s universe. Since most if not all of their costumes are much more modern than something you would see running around in Marvel Comics or DC comics. For the costume itself, I kept the center piece that kept Revolutionary’s petty coat together, since I felt that was what really tied the costume together. It connects to the draped shoulder sleeves, along with the neckpiece; I don’t know I just felt that she looked naked without them. The white stripes are meant to represent the white stripes that went down the front of the petty coat. Since the color of the petty coat itself was blue, that is what I used as the primary color for the costume. With modern day character, I feel, movement is a big part of the design, which I tried to incorporate into the design.

Backstory
Grand Daughter of the late Paulie Grotto, Lorelei Grotto had always looked up to this man even though she barely knew him. Lorelei inherited two things from her grand father, an acute sense between right & wrong and subtle superhuman abilities. Lorelei has a 6th sense that grants her a psychic awareness of everything going on around her. Also all of her other sense are enhanced.

After 9/11, Lorelei’s felt that it was a necessity for her to help fight for her country, much like her grand father had done. Feeling that she must uphold his legacy, she has since taken the name Revolutionary. After hearing of a government sanctioned super hero team formation, Lorelei immediately pursued U.S.S.D (United States Super Department). to try and attempt to join the team. Much to her dismay she was rejected, but was given a job working at the main U.S.S.D. facility. During a black out, all inmates were able to break out. With just her wit and one pistol, Lorelei was able to recapture at least a dozen of the countries highest threat inmates. Since then, Revolutionary has become one of the top field agents in the entire organization, and constantly fights for what she feels is right.

Origin
By the end of the 20th century, Rita Langley's body was weakening and losing its ability to house the Poison Silhouette energies. The female spirits connected to these energies yearned for a
new vessel, so Rita went on a search. While strolling through the city streets, she came
upon a photo shoot. Several beautiful young women were modelling fur coats on this summer
day. One of the models, Aria Gray, collapsed from the heat. She was treated terribly by
the photographer and assistants on the set. Rita took notice. The argument over the conditions ended with Aria slapping the photographer in the face, and storming off set.
That night, Rita followed Aria home. She lived in a filthy room, in a disgusting apartment building. The two women spoke for a while, and learned that they had much in common, including a history of mistreatment by men. Aria had been on her own since the age of sixteen and was trying to better her life by modelling, but it was hard. Rita offered a solutution... to take on the powers of the Poison Silhouette!!

Costume
Aria's idea of an action outfit is patent leather. She donned all black; bustier, pants, boots and gloves. She was inpsired by movies like The Matrix and Mr and Mrs Smith. When Rita wrapped her trademark red scarf around Aria's neck, it took on a life of its own. The shadows danced around her, and into her... she became the new POISON SILHOUETTE! With that, Rita Langley faded away.

Powers
Aria immediately began practicing her shadow transportation skills. She was thrilled when she realized that Rita and many female spirits of the past could speak to her. Rita lead Aria to a beautiful house in the hills. It would be Aria's new home. Displayed in the library, was Rita's hypodermic needle. Aria held it, and could feel its power. She found herself longing for the chance to use it against the kind of violators she met as a vulnerable, homeless young woman.

Origin
Aspen Rivers was an average female office “gofer,” and a single, female nerd. When she wasn’t reading comics or roleplay gaming, Aspen spent much of her free time visiting with lonely retirees at Shady Acres Nursing home. She became special friends with an old guy named Barry Thornson. The afternoon before he died, he gave her his End-Belt and Omega Medallion, and told her of their powers, and his history as The End Worlder. “The belt’s been frozen with no image for a long time,” he said, “so I hope it’s finished. But, in case it isn’t, I leave it to you.”

Aspen was flabbergasted. When she took the items, she was surrounded with a glow, and suddenly The Powers That Be took her to a place outside Time, where they showed her worlds, even entire universes, ceasing to exist.

“The End Worlder’s job has expanded,” they said. “An Unknown Force is tampering with the multiverse, causing worlds and universes to end before their time. We will give your body power additional to your icons, and have altered the icons and bodysuit; these changes are so that you may try to right the progression of time and space where it has been perverted by this force. Your other mission is to find out who is behind the changes, and remove their power. We only have one clue to their identity: the word ‘Didio.’”

“You are the new End Worlder---for without you, ultimately ALL worlds will end.”

Costume:
In the pic, she’s half-phased into a universe, and drawing solar power from a galaxy to gain counter-energy to stop the destruction of a sun.

The Powers updated the suit material to a flexible form of crystallized Time, which makes it nearly invulnerable, and streamlined the design (skin tight) to allow her to slip more easily between dimensions and universes. The bodysuit now depicts shifting star-fields, symbolizing her new scope of duty. (I removed the red and expanded the black from the original boots and shorts, for this. Also, for a more modern feel, the sleeves extend up the back of the hand in a “V” and encircle her middle finger like a ring.)

The cape (yes, it glows) is constructed of flexible, solidified solar light, and is attached to her suit by two bronze-colored medallions on the shoulders. The Omega Medallion joins the cape at the throat. (The cape anchors the Medallion to the suit (using gravity force), making the Medallion non-removable by anyone but her.)

The Belt and Medallion have been modernized, and are now constructed of proto-matter from the Big Bang, which being original (before the changes) to all existence, enables her travels and powers. The belt picture shifts (as before) to an image of the pivotal event which ends a world or universe (giving her specific powers, as before), and the medallion channels a mental pull toward that universe, allowing her to zero-in on the problem.

She always retains these powers:

Super strength
Immunity to dimensional and space friction
Flight
Able to survive airless space
Unblindable Eyes: Tiny galaxies spin in the space black that covers her corneas; they let her see in any light range, and in pure darkness also.

But the Key Power (the one that will enable her to affect each pivotal event in a universe) still results from the End-Belt’s current image, which changes according to each new challenge she faces.

Inspiration:
Whiterose’s The End Worlder:
Origin:
Barry Thomson was your average working stiff, dodging the draft to go to War. That is, until the Powers That Be threw him into the not-too distant future where he witnessed the End of the World, before being thrown back into his own time.

Now, using the Omega Medal and End-Belt given to him by the Powers, Barry has a new lease on life. He sets out as the END-WORLDER, fighting crime and injustice and trying to prevent what he has seen from transpiring.

Costume:
His Omega Medal and End-Belt are from the future; Both working in unison to grant him certain powers relating to how the World ends.

For instance, say the world ends with a nuclear war. The image on his belt buckle shifts to that of a mushroom cloud, and End-Worlder is now able to fire radioactive blasts.
At first I was sweating, trying to think of how to take this awesome character design into modern day; but then I re-read the challenge rules, and saw that we could alter the gender, powers, etc. as needed, and that it might be a “character through legacy.” Inspiration hit, and it was too fun to resist, especially with how it ties in to the complaints some have with what’s currently going on with the DC multiverses, hee. I see her as being something like the Silver Surfer (a universe-traveler), but instead of being Galactus’s Herald, she shifts throughout the multiverse, trying to save worlds and universes, as she seeks more clues to the source of the problem.

Origin
Gary Grant’s ill-fated accident changed him for the rest of his life. As The Human X-Ray, Gary’s powerhouse body unconditionally collected all forms of radiation, from the harmless to the lethal, and transformed it into X-Rays which he used to fight the criminal element.

But no one, not even Gary with his phenomenal abilities, can contain all that energy forever. Gary began to leak radiation, unbeknownst to him until the people around him inexplicably began to fall ill. And then die.

Gary ceased active duty for decades until he could contain the leak safely. The Human X-Ray mantle had been sullied, and he simply didn’t feel right using it anymore. He changed his name, changed his costume, created a device to regulate his radiation levels. Gary Grant became Röntgen, after the original investigator of the X-Ray or Röntgen Ray: Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen.

Inspiration
Escapegoat’s original concept was solid, and I really wanted to build on it instead of creating a whole new persona. When it comes to the Golden Age heroes growing and transforming over the decades, I found that there is often a defining tragedy that re-iterates why they do what they do and to make them more relatable to each new generation of readers.

So I had to studiously ignore the ‘The Human X-Ray can easily contain the radiation he absorbs’ idea. Sorry escapegoat.

I wanted to keep the Scientist angle, as well as the colour scheme and especially black silhouette/white skeleton because these things are identifiable as the Human X-Ray. His body hasn’t changed, just his costume. The costume itself was half inspired by Marvel’s Beast and DC’s Amazo, with the whole high-waisted-sitting-just-under-the-chest tights which seems to be pretty popular as a costume among the 'monster' characters in the Modern era. I kept escapegoat’s bandolier since it was an integral part to the new costume’s containment ideas, and with the stylized belt-buckle, wristbands and kneepads it monitors and regulates Röntgen’s radiation intake and output. Again, the whole outfit is lined with lead-based dyes so it’s actually visible.

I see Röntgen as a sort of Dr. Midnite or Beast character; he’s a scientist that more often than not prefers the lab to combat, but he can throw down with the best of them when it comes down to it.

Origin
15 year old Victor Virtue lived in London with his parents. One night he grew six inches and developed the mutant power to control the earth. His powers were wildly out of control and causing havoc in the big city, so Victor's parents sent him off to live on the farm of his Great Grand Aunt Victoria. Once there he discovered that being in Scotland brought him great peace and control over his powers. Victoria, recognizing a kindred spirit, told him tales of her time as a super hero during World War II. Inspired, Victor fashioned a costume based on hers and became Victor Virtue, Land Lad!

Powers
Land Lad can control the earth in its many forms. When away from Scotland, his ancestral land, he loses control of his abilities. In order to keep control he lines the soles of his boots with good Scottish soil.

The Costume
I kept the color palette that marvelboy used for Land Girl. I moved some bits around (the flag becomes the shirt, the belt becomes a pair of wrist bands). I wanted the browns to be more prominent in order to emphasize Victor's power to control the earth. The belt is the belt from the Silver Age Land Girl (Victor's grandmother). I wanted to do a design that was faithful to the original while also having a few of my own favorite quirks (asymmetrical collar, anyone?).

Redesign Concept
For her redesign, I didn't want to mess with her colors at all. I think think the colors black for wicked and green for money envy were a fine initial choice. I did however have to upgrade her dress, because it was obviously from the 40s/50s era so that had to go. At first I wanted to shorten up her skirt, but that ended up looking childish and didn't have the same mature demeanor as the original Malice so I opted for leather pants instead that were framed by here over coat which continued on from her high collared, front-tie top, which is also marked with an M ala Spawn. The other M comes from her belt buckle which is more stylish than functional. It's also solid gold which she's has no trouble affording. I think the leather goes with the Malice part of her name. Kind of like a S&M type of dominatrix. I also wanted to keep her costume sexy, she is a mistress after all. I kept the netting on her chest to reflect a bit of the old costume (it's a netted under-shirt). I ditched the cane and substituted it with a cop's night stick. Maybe she took it from a cop personally. Plus, the cane was too old fashioned. I know she is supposed to be refined, but I though I'd toughener her up some for the new era. I also gave her a new hair style. Something modern. I tried to emulate that combed back ponytail style that I see some rockabilly chicks sport. I traded the masquerade type mask for a sporty yet effective domino mask. I kept the gloves the same, nothing to improve there. She still smokes apparently, heh. She also pretty much has the same powers.

Story:
Elementary school art teacher Georgina Molloy assumed the class field trip to the acrylic paint factory would be uneventful as usual, but little did she know that the maintenance was underpaid and overworked! A faulty screw sent the second grade teacher to her supposed doom -- and supposed it was indeed! Reborn from the colorful pits of acrylic paint tubs, MISS SWATCH's newfound strength and reinforced color theory lead her through a hilarious series of adventures in school, life, and romance! Joyfulness and fun were two words usually used to describe MISS SWATCH’s life.

Joyfulness and fun UNTIL a fatidic day. While fighting her nemesis, TINA TIME, Georgina fell into one of the adversary’s time portals and suddenly appeared in 2008.

Georgina was shocked. Murder, vandalism, terrorism, individualism. People dying of hunger and despair. Tragedies all over the globe. Wars still going strong. Little hope. The world was not the colorful and amazing place she always thought it would be in the future. How come society has evolved so little? At her time, bad things happened, sure. But not like that. Not with all that info being thrown at her at all time. MISS SWATCH couldn’t take it. She tried to make amends with the world’s situation, but she just couldn’t. Depression got the best of her. She started drinking and smoking. One day, she tried to prevent a robbery and ended up seeing two little children die. It drove her insane. She died her hair and changed it to a stronger look. She started using her art skills to spray the walls of the world with her sadness and indignation. She’s now SWATCH. And she cries every night while taking her sleeping pills.

Costume:
It’s basically a heavy update from Finny’s full of light design. I tried to maintain the same elements, but with a darker and modern version. The colors are the same (red and blue) but the tone changed dramatically. The cape wasn’t working, so it became a dark and long coat. The make up under her eyes shows her state of mind. I wanted something that was the complete opposite of the Golden Age “feel good” vibe. It was really fun creating this twisted version of MISS SWATCH and I hope Finny approves it!

Origin
Norman Newman III was an exemplary freshman in college when his grandfather, the original Norman Newman, was on death's bed in a nursing home for elderly individuals who were slightly "crazy". No one believed the stories Norman Newman Sr. would tell. He told tales of an extraordinary crimefight named the Phenom. Norman Newman III was the only one who would ever listen to his grandfathers stories, and actually believe them. Norman III, or Normie as he was called, would come visit his grandfather every evening after school to listen to his grandfather's wonderful stories. Unfortunately now, Norman Sr. was deathly ill.

The night of his grandfather's death, just ten minutes before his death, Normie visited his grandfather one last time. His grandfather explained to Normie how he was the masked avenger called Phenom. And that he wanted to pass his knowledge and mystical powers down to Normie. Normie was astonished and asked why the grandfather didn't pass the mantle of Phenom down his father. Grandfather Norman explained that his son, Norman II was never ready for the mantle of the Phenom, and never believed in it. He explained the Normie is the only one who could be taught the powers of the mysterious Phenom. That night, grandfather Norman died, and Norman Newman III was blessed with the uncanny powers of the Phenom!

Costume
The new Phenom has been updated with a modern and more magician looking costume this time around. I loved the color scheme of the previous Phenom so I kept those and tweaked a few features of the costume to make it more acceptable to modern day superhero wear. I redesigned the belt just a tad adding a more zig zag type of shape to it instead of just horizontal. I kept the emblem in the belt because I figured that was the Phenom's trademark. I added gold lining to a lot of the costume to give it a more regal and magician feel. I also added little trinkets and amulets on his cloak, which by the way is the original Phenom's levitating cape. He has the original Phenom's powers as well.

Sidenote: I'm sorry YourImaginaryPal if it seems he has a big head! I was trying for extreme perspective and instead ended up with extremely big head!

Background
Tabitha Duncan is the granddaughter of Adventurer Jake Duncan. She live a sheltered life with her grandparents since her actual parents died mysteriously. Grandpa Jake was wealthy and wise, but little Tabby felt like a house cat. In [high school she was rebellious aand began hanging out with the "freaks and the goth kids because she felt she was an outcast her self, and for some odd reason she liked to dress up in strange costumes. Hating her grandfather for being so strict she exchanged few word with him until, she was in college and he was on his deathbed. During her final visit to the hospital Jake explains it was his fault her parents and grandmother died. His wife daughter in law and Tabitha were abducted once again by agents of Mary Mauve. Jake and his son Al E. Duncan his successor went to rescue their family, but Jake mad a foolish mistake that doomed all but he & Tabitha who was an infant at the time. So he raised Tabitha in a mundane life away from adventure. He passed away that night, and while Tabby dreamed, she was faced by a large jungle cat the cat looked deeply into her eyes; then, suddenly the cat jumped at her, and while it seemed an attack the noble Ocelot's spirit entered her. She awoke renewed. Now Tabby knew why everything was taken away from her, & she didn't blame her grandfather at all. She knew now she must avenge her family and Bring Madam Mauve to justice. She had to carry on the Family name of The Ocelot.

Costume
I'm going for the goth/punk look here.
She's got the fishnet leggins and sleeves underneath the Ocelot print stretch tights and gloves, sporting some classic all black Chuck Taylor converse. The top is a Ocelot print blouse with a black corset, joined with a mini skirt in the same fabric. She wears Heavy eye make up and on of those cute cornstiched aviator caps with an animal motif. She modified her sneakers and gloves with special claws she found in her grandfathers wardrobe that allowed her to climb up just about any surface and sharp enough to leave a nasty cut on any foolish enough to rub this cat the wrong way.

Powers
Similar to the original Ocelot, she has the agility and reflexes of a cat. She has just beyond peak human strength and a whisker sense that gives her a sense of balance and an unique awareness of her surroundings. Of course she's great at hand to hand combat and has an affinity for Tiger style Kung Fu.
Graceful elegant and deadly.
Forget about a black cat crossing your path, if you're linked to the criminal world you don't want to cross, the Ocelot.

New-Aged:
What I was going for here was a very cosmic look... In my head, Strype Banner left the country during the Vietnam War, sick of being a tool of the government in a fight he didn't believe in. I figure he must have some superpowered friends in space, (who doesn't?) and he decided to stay with them in the mean time. During his time in space, he adopted a costume that was more significant of his celestial pals instead of something that was so blatantly " 500% AMERICAN!!!". The colors have stayed, but all of the American icons have been tweaked.

I decided that an older, wiser, more bitter and cynical, more powerful version was a way to go. Something that demands authority and reverence. Anyway, hope y'all enjoy/hope this direction makes sense.

Origin:
Isabelle Seberg held control of the New York City underworld for a good portion of the 1940’s and the first few years of the 1950’s. While her methods were effective for a while, they eventually became her undoing. A rival crimelord, Louis “Hard” Knox overcame Mademoiselle Cyanide’s method of seduction and elimination due to his diamond-like skin. Caught without her bodyguards, who were disposed off during her method of seduction, Isabelle was brutally beaten and barely got away with her life. Her empire was overtaken shortly afterwards.

Isabelle took leave of New York with a good portion of the wealth she had acquired during her tenure as top crime lord of New York City. For a couple of decades she maintained a low profile, content with living with her vast riches. However, as she grew older, she became more concerned of her own mortality. Not wanting to grow old and weak, she sought out the elusive fountain of youth. Using up most of her resources and wealth, she finally tracked down a vial, where each drop would restore one year of age.
Eventually the desire for power soon returned, especially with her wealth almost completely spent. She re-invented herself, knowing that her methods of power and control had left her vulnerable during her last encounter, as well as being a little outdated. The martial arts came rose to popularity in the 1970’s, so she sought out a master to train herself - not only as a way to defend herself, but to learn of new methods of assassination. This way she would not only use cyanide, but she would also be as deadly as cyanide.
Re-inventing herself as the new Mademoiselle Cyanide, daughter of the original, she infiltrated the criminal organization MEDUSA, eventually becoming its leader after 2 years.

Inspiration:
I had fun re-inventing Mademoiselle Cyanide for the modern age. I felt that maintaining the same character, instead of setting someone else up to take the mantle, would be an inventive approach. So I developed her ongoing origin from there.

I wanted to incorporate some features form her original costume, to stay with the character’s style from the 40’s, but then sex it up to today’s contemporary look. I felt that Isabelle would adapt well to today’s open sexual norms, since she originally relied heavily on her power with her methods of seduction. It was no trouble sticking wit the fishnets, but I took the cuff of the boots. Keep the similar hairstyle and added a blue streak to it (a little literal reference to her new ability to react quick from her martial arts training). I kept the choker, which now contains a secret compartment containing a gas that helps mesmerize anyone she chooses to seduce. I then wanted to incorporate a symbol for cyanide, and settled on the basic poison symbol that you find as a warning label on products, and chose to place the crossbones aspect of the symbol on her breasts, to emphasize her deadly seductive nature.

WHO IS THIS STRANGE GOLDEN GHOSTE?
Frederick Nichols was unsure of how to go about the situation. Having just been assigned a thirteen page paper by the terrible Mrs. Brunheim on "The Single Person You can most relate to in the Human Race", capitalized in that very way, Nichols pondered. He had to know what he was like before he knew with whom he could relate.

His father, the genius scientist? Mother dearest, the pastry chef? Or a pop culture icon? Marilyn Monroe? One of the Spice Girls? Hell, Joan Rivers?! Pouring over the local library's microfiche, Freddie poured and poured for similar gay icons, whom he found most comfort in relating to. Pouring and pouring and finally, the speedy microfiche proved useful outside of Hollywood!

HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE
It was a slanderous editorial by some bigoted church man, but as Freddie automatically sliced through the lies of one man, he discovered the heroism of another! Here was this lost hero, this Golden Ghost of another life, another time, doing his thing way back when! Freddie felt a surge of energy and motivation, and after he finished his thirteen page essay, he whisked away into his father's laboratory!

Re-emerging weeks later with his red gauntlets in hand, Freddie Nichols became THE GOLDEN GHOSTE, continuing the legacy of his gay predecessor by protecting the oppressed in the cruel world of high school!

(The series would read as Blue Beetle meets Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane)

THE COSTUME
UPPPPPDAAAATEEEE. I wanted to approach this simply: keep what works, trash what doesn't, and retain the Ghost we all loved from Challenge 4.

The concept of a ghost from beyond the grave was perfect for a 50s mystery comic, but it wouldn't translate or work as well in today's comic industry (only with immense talent attached; something all characters can not claim). Thus, I wanted to play on the antithesis of magical powers and play with technology in the modern era instead. Freddie's scientist father has greated gauntlets (plays on the metallic bands of the original) that turn him invisible, allowing him to sneak up on bullies and assailants and scare the shit out of them, much like a ghost.

The top is an enforced fabric that protects Freddie from normal harm, with the design reproducing the skull/demon pattern from the original costume and making it sleeker and leaner. On his face lie goggles, designed to filter light so that he can see even when he turns invisible. His father's a scientist. He thinks of these things. (And it happens to be an homage to the domino mask, too!)

Although the gauntlets make him invisible, he can still be heard, and so boots with rubber soles protect both his quickstep and retrostyled (see it?!) fohawk coiffure.

The entire costume is meant to look with less flair and more function, but not by sacrificing style and design.

Solaris, your illustration is beautiful. You really stepped up your game.

Thanks! :D I was able to play more to my strengths this round, and one of my stronger skills is working with light sources/light and shadow. I put a ton of time in on her, and am very happy with how it turned out. Creating the star-fields took a lot of time, as did working out all the various ways light would reflect, etc., but it was worth it.

As for the direction I went, it stemmed from the whole concept and name "The End Worlder." In modern terms, to me that strongly suggested enlarging the scope to a galactic scale. Concept-wise, characters like the Silver Surfer (and a few others I've read of, but can't remember the names now) were a big influence: the kind of character that works on a galactic scale, who is able to traverse space and dimensions, and who at times has odd, almost god-like powers (coming from the belt, but then again, it's based off of what she's up against, so her win isn't guaranteed).

Also, I'd just read a thread where someone was complaining about "Why did DC recreate the Multiverse, if they're going start killing off all the multiverses/Earths?" kind of thing... so it was strongly on my mind. The humor of having a character dedicted to *stopping* multiverses and worlds from being destroyed dove-tailed right in with the "real life/what's up" with current comics. I doubt DC would run it---but I can see it coming out as an Indie comic.

Captainbosh is very consistent with the best pure comics art, of any of us. However, the main component in the competition is costume design, not art, so there are some weeks where his is clearly the best design, and other weeks where someone else has a design that best fit the challenge. That's no scrapes to his nose, however, because he does some awesome stuff (often with the design, as well as his art), and I heartily and cheerfully envy his artistic skill---especially with dynamic posing. He's encouraged me to pick up and work on that neglected aspect of my own skills (not just with some of my submissions, but in the general art I'm working on), so I owe him a vote of thanks for that encouragement.

EDITED TO ADD: And actually, everyone in the competition has done stuff that has served as inspiration or encouragement to me, in trying to hone and improve my own art skills. It's one of the great things about the competition in the first place: we push each other to strive harder, to think in new ways, to see things from a different angle. And... it's just sheer fun, too.

In the sake of my design, I would say ''anything goes" kind of era. ; )

I really do believe that the Modern Age allows a multitude of looks, as a reflection of globalization. We have characters like Sister Grimm, Wisdom, Elsa Bloodstone and others who are clearly a product of this.

I think there's a lot of leeway in that. There's a great diversity in what's out there now. From leather X-Men uniforms to manga and anime influence to cartoon design elements.

I personally used Alan Moore's Top Ten as my benchmark when I went to redesign the costume. I felt that the ABC line combined the classic whimsy of comics and some fun modern sleekness.

Good question!

And I'm not sure I have an answer... but here's a few thoughts:

1. You bear in mind what's currently out there, in terms of costumes, and how they compare/have changed from costumes in the past.

2. IMO, you also look at modern *fashion* (normal wear, stuff that's trendy, "niche" clothing (like goth or fetish, for instance), and try to take all that a bit past the current edge while not overwhelming the sensibilities of the viewer.

3. For some (like me in this challenge) a practical reason can trump a wild or outlandish element you might want to incorporate. For instance (using myself as a guinea pig here), I knew some would see the new End Worlder's bodysuit as plain, even with the star-field on it. Some would want costume parts that flare, or do curly-cues, or something---or at least with it having some cut-outs.

I went with the practical reasoning of a skintight suit experiencing less friction as she shifts through dimensions and zooms through space; also, it ties in a little to latex or spandex catsuits. Another reason I went with it was because I wanted the belt and the medallion to be the main focus, along with the cape of light and the star-field. I'd thought about adding red lines of light that would be sort of like piping on her suit (to bring back in some of the original red), but decided against it, because the design already had a lot going on, what with the star-field on the suit, and I felt that the lines would make it too "busy). And, the fact that it's skin-tight edged toward the current trend in many comics to draw skin-tight costumes that show a lot of muscle definition (which I softened a bit, because IMO it would've clashed with the star-field too much---and the star-field on the suit was very important to me as a costume element: it symbolized the scope of her power).

4. In fashion design in general, old styles tend to get revamped and combined in new ways---we've all seen that on the Project Runway show. Comics costumes tend to do that too, at times, so understanding *both* older real world fashions, *and* older comic fashions, can help in trying to create a new, "modern" costume.

5. The character itself plays a huge role---what is the person like? What do they look like? What are powers, history, mission, goal... and what is the world like that they live in? Where do they fight? What kind of challenges do they face? For example, you don't draw an Old West character in a modern spacesuit without very good reason... otherwise, it just doesn't make sense.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Heh heh heh...that's pretty funny.

Before I knew what the challenge was I intended to just go over the top insane with my design for this round. It isn't like I'm gonna make it to the end anyway, so why not go out over the top? But I just couldn't do that to marvelboy's cool design.

I wanted to do a serious redesign. The character was a gritty realistic character to begin with, but also a background character, so I tried to just update the costume, find a suitable story for the character, and mostly stay close to the original.

Maybe it's too subdued as a result, maybe I should have gone all out and gone for wacky...

I might not even make it to the next round. :frown:

Captainbosh is very consistent with the best pure comics art, of any of us. However, the main component in the competition is costume design, not art, so there are some weeks where his is clearly the best design, and other weeks where someone else has a design that best fit the challenge.

Just to clarify....I wasn't downing anyone else as EVERYONE has been connecting in a major way on all of these challenges.

That being said....even from a design standpoint I think the good captain has been a cut above. Commander Z was freaking brilliant....everything after that was just as amazing. But....sorry, not trying to hijack the thread, cause I could go on about each design.

Mainly just wanted to say I agree with you.everyone has rocked it out and that my assessment was based on design, not artistic ability.

Keep up the good work everyone.

I guess I don't really see the point of your original comment. I don't think anyone seriously doubts that captainbosh is going to be one of the final three. He and Aljira seem to be the season faves at this point.

Cheerleading for him when he's one of the frontrunners just seems a touch pointless to me.

*shrug* Meh, it didn't bother me. Everyone has opinions, and many have a favorite artist. I just disagreed with him on the design thing. I agree with you completely, Solaris. I think Cap's rendering skills are dazzling, but I always look at the design work myself, even beyond the actual renderings. I'm a designer and an illustrator, which are two entirely different skill sets, so I always look at this as a design challenge first and foremost.

That said, I'm having a difficult time choosing between 6 designs - this has got to be the most difficult CBRunway season yet!

Heh, well it took me a while to really start to understand what the contest is all about, even *with* Matt's comments in the original thread. When everyone got into the discussion on that subject (was it last challenge, or the one before?) it helped clarify a lot of it for me. (Originally I thought the character background played a much bigger role than it actually does---all that discussion helped me "get it.") Sometimes I can be a little dense, that way. Hee.

Having good art *does* help---but although I try to do the best art I can, every time, I now put my primary focus on thinking about the design, what to do, and why. Whether the reason turns out to be a good choice or bad one, I try to have a reason for everything I do, in creating a design. In first few rounds, I was trying to do all my stuff in "comics style" with the art, which is not really a strong suit for me. Since all the discussion, I've quit worrying about that, and focused more on just trying to render the design as best I can; what the voters think of it at that point is up to them. And the critiques I treasure most are the ones that *address* design issues, good or bad.

I think you'd need to look to the "Real Housewives" shows for that. LOL. (And no, I don't watch them---but I've seen some of the commercials, with the catty stuff.)

Besides, it's much more fun this way. This year was the first time I watched Project Runway, and one comment I heard from several folks was that this year's group had far less back-biting and that kind of drama, than previous years. (Maybe Chris had something to do with that.) Anyway, I enjoyed *not* seeing people get catty like they do on Real Housewives and other shows like that---it's refreshing.

Well, if you're down here, maybe it's the yellow snow.

For those of you not in the South, we're currently into our annual weeks of Springtime Yellow Snow, which is what we call the ridiculously heavy pine pollen down here. It's so bad, you have to wash it from the windshield to see---and you can see it in the air as a haze. Think of driving down a dry, dusty dirt road, and all the dirt you get on your windshield---that approaches the yellow snow concept. Right now anything outdoors is coated in yellow---and when I opened my flip phone a few minutes ago, found that even the display on *it* had a pollen coat.

Yuk,

I found the initial design and concept to be basic, but in a good way because it defintely did evoke a lot of golden age sensibilities that I didn't really take a note of in the last round. Just wanted to point out my favorites…

Aljira's CANDY STRIPER (Created by pryde15) Just thought this was a great way to add complexity to the character. It’s a great drawing and a cool design for the outfit. This is a character I would really like to read about, the description really lays out a realistic character in a superhero world which is what modern comics is all about right now.

marvelboy2004's MARC MERCY 2041 (Inspired by End of Time) holy crap its megaman!!! I love this drawing. It seems like a bit of a departure for you marvelboy but I like it. It’s the perfect modern version of a cheesy scifi character visually. As for the story…AMAZING this has so much intrigue and takes a wonderful starting place (end of time, I loved your back story SOOOOO much) to new heights. A personal favorite. If I had any suggestions it would be to subdue the color scheme. Not change the colors but subdue them to feel more modern and stylish. Other than that…sheer perfection!

Dazzler's COPPER COURTESANS (Created by AnkaleRa)
Your design uses throwback design to accomplish a Mignolaesque concept very successfully. Love the cloning thing and I think it fits into modern comic literature beautifully. Visually, I love the hair and glasses and basically everything from the waste up. Its like she was born fully grown today with the fashion sense of then and went to town. Awesome.

pryde15's REVOLUTIONARY (Created by spaghettikiss)
I have been very open about the fact that I hated my creation of revolutionary. I think its my worst piece and I deserve to be killed slowly for it. That being said I think Pryde gets the award for turning nothing into something. Finding modern inspiration in 9/11 to match the WWII inspiration and making the character more of an individual than an icon was smart as hell. Thanks for improving on my shite. Sorry I gave you such crap!!!

Solaris' END WORLDER (Created by WhiteRose)
wow…just wow. Great image, cool costume that is simple in design but eternally complex in its execution. Great job straying from the original design while paying it great respect. Again…wo

ZacharyLovesYou's STRYPE (Strype Banner created by Solaris)
I really love how you transformed an ‘all American hero ‘ into a benevolent, god like force that is wiser than a common patriot. He is beyond or understanding of patriotism because he is the omnipotent patriot. Its friggin brilliant.

In the end for me it came down to three:

Marc Mercy 2041
Strype
End worlder

They all did it for me but I had to pick the one that I would most want to read a few GN’s of and based off of that I voted for Marvelboy. I loved the original and I love where he took it. Reminds me of fear agent without being the least bit derivitive. It has the heart of the modern indie character to it and Its just damn fun!

And for anyone who doesn't know, SDs are a stylized version of the regular character, with big heads way bigger than the bodies.

Just wanted to point out my favorites…

...
Solaris' END WORLDER (Created by WhiteRose)
wow…just wow. Great image, cool costume that is simple in design but eternally complex in its execution. Great job straying from the original design while paying it great respect. Again…wo
...

Thanks so much, spaghettikiss! One thing I kept in mind was what if an artist was having to draw the starfield over and over, so I made it a *shifting* starfield---that way, they wouldn't have to worry about placement of specific stars every time she was drawn. I'm glad you like the design!

*flails*

...

*flails some more*

Holy MONKEYS ON FIRE, Sol. I cannot express how much...Jesus. Honestly, I was worried sick with this challenge, trying to do escapegoat's Human X-Ray justice in the even more limited time I had on the weekend (which...I'm not sure I did, in light of all the other designs) and wondering what was going to happen to my fella. Solaris, I am so pleased to say my worries were so very obviously unfounded. And the votes are saying so too.

I love her. I love her like my baby...who happened to get a sex-change and expand her horizons (AHA A PUN). No, in all seriousness, I honestly can't believe the absolutely fantastic job you've done with my End-Worlder. Thank you.

Okay, now I am *utterly* happy! This is my first submission in the competition that I'm truly happy with---having YOU be so happy with it, too, just rocks my world. I loved the End Worlder concept, and I'm glad I was able to do it justice in your eyes. *ecstatic grin and bounce*

THANK YOU, WhiteRose!

I also want to thank the folks who voted for me---this competition is a really tough choice, and I'm honored that something about my design appealed enough to you to make it your pick---THANKS!

PS---I think you did a great job with the Human X-Ray! I love Rontgen: the name rocks (and fits), I liked how you progressed him, and with the design itself, I like how you kept the chest "X", the way the pants remind me of radiation-protective pants (including the hgh waist, and they have a German and labworker feel somehow), and how the pants combined with the "X" give a certain "protective rubber overalls" type feel---very appropriate for the character.

This is my favorite out of them all. Her face, the body language, the way that its color, and that scarf. I just love it.

Really liking your rendition shade101.
I see what you were going for with the perspective.
I would say you did a great job making my extremely basic character pop.
it's funny how our entries are back to back and have grandchildren as legacy characters whose grandparents pass on the powers from the deathbed.

All the entries are spectacular. may get around to critiques one day.

Fittingly enough, I went with the same character I voted for in the last round: Marc Mercy. Great update - all the visual cues from the Golden Age design are there, but it's still a very modern-looking character.

Shoutouts to the Copper Courtesans, Lady Day, and the End Worlder.

I seriously think everyone BRUNG IT. This round brought out the best in all of us!From a spectator's point of view, I've gotta agree. You all seem to be steppin' up your game with each challenge.

Kudos all around.

Thank you! :) And I agree about the others as well. Solaris brought her A-game (natch!) and End of Time really, really did something with Lady Day that I love. Not only is the design great, but I can't get over how much I dig the story.

I am having the best time playing this game!

:o Deanlegion! I love what you've done with Poison Silhouette!! Omg, I am very honored to have someone as talented as you redesign her. And I love the story you came up with as well. The new and old Poison Silhouette even resemble each other. I'm blown away. Thank you Dean! You made me proud!

Whew! Thank you! I'm glad you approve. Your design was already classic. I'd toyed with many types.... goth, punk, nerd, dominatrix... none of them were sophisticated enough. But I liked the idea of patent leather. I liked her "living" scarf. So, I just kept it simple. Then, I decided that when Rita went searching for the new Poison Silhouette, it would be natural that the new would resemble the old.

Background
Tabitha Duncan is the granddaughter of Adventurer Jake Duncan.

I had no idea what to expect, and I was open to anything. Well, I already adore Tabitha! I like that she's not a sultry, Catwoman type. I like that she's a goth girl, kinda stocky, freckled. She doesn't slink into the room in high heels, she stomps in, in her hightops.

Thank you for such a fun continuation of Jake's story. Man, I kinda want to know more about the Madame Mauve Organization!

yes she stomps in her chucks, but ever so gracefully. Thought about some steel toe docs, but I was channeling some hippy (from the anatomical hip, not the "damn hippie" hip.) Goth chicks I knew from working at Tower. I was going for fun and carefree, glad it resonated with you. Well Mauve and Lavender are arch rival, Mary Mauve was pining for Jake's affections and couldn't compare to the Lovely Lavender. She was rich and and famous, couldn't see why Jake wouldn't choose her, so she constantly sought to ice the competition. She used her wealth to gain arcane powers and immortality and demands her subjects call her Madame. Formal names like Mary are to be used only by those worthy. Her obsession with Jake turned to hate after all the rejection.

But Mary's obsession has nothing on Tabitha's, who won't stop until Madame Mauve is brought to justice, of the Ocelot variety.

Sorry for being MIA for the last couple of weeks. Been extremely busy lately, and kept missing the voting threads.

This challenge was great, and I think everyone did a superb job.
Of them all I really liked:

atoningunifex's Land Lad
Alijra's Candy Striper
marvelboy2004's Marc Mercy 2041

But since I can only vote for one...
I'll have to go with Marc Mercy! I think marvelboy did a good job introducing End of Time's character to the modern age. He's unique, modern, and gives enough, but not too much, tribute to the original.

Ok, I just voted for Spaghetti Kisses' Bullet revamp, and not just because I believe his book Birth is worth reading, and buying even. But of the remaining designs scrambling for votes I think his concept is the most sound. The design doesn't quite say "Bullet" to me, however the concept of his revamp is pretty strong. I like the reasoning and backstory behind the additional powers and the electrode/muscle idea for extra strength. The backpack shoulder console thingy is nifty too. I would try to put a helmet of some kind on him... but too much and it winds up being too comical- like the Human Bullet from the Tick universe. Or was it Bulleteer? Does anyone know the character I am talking about?

Thanks man! I always appreciate the support! I soo don't want to be voted out yet, I am having such a blast with this contest!!!

I thought about putting a helmet on him but I really wanted to shoow off in a modern way the characters more 'nerdy' attributes. However, with a cool helmet designed similarly to the backpack, this design really could have been pumped up a bit.

thanks for the crit!!

Hello. Welcome to the Runway. As you know, in fashion and in comic books, one day you're in and the next you're out.

Please note than several votes were discounted because of shared IP addresses. It was stated at the beginning of the season that duplicate votes from the same address would not be counted. Continued attempts to flood the ballot may result in disqualification from CBRunway.

Aljira and marvelboy2004, congratulations, you are the winners of this challenge. This means you are immune and cannot be eliminated in the next challenge.

wshaunpennington, your character design was modern, but unfortunately it did not appeal to enough voters. Additionally, while swiping others' artwork was not specifically stated as being against the rules, this may have certainly cost you votes, and should serve as a warning to the remaining participants. As in real comic work, using reference is fine but swiping is frowned upon.

wshaunpennington...you are out.

Auf wiedersehen.

This means the rest of you are in. See you on the runway for the next challenge.

not that it really concerns me directly, but could multiple accounts under the same IP address occur in a computer lab situation or using the same router or open air wifi?

I mean it could, hell of a lot of a co-inky-dink but it is possible.

but more imortantly
Aljira is really rocking it here and It's good to see Marvelboy get some respect.
