View Full Version : Sequential Art Challenge #3: Batman & Catwoman

Here's the concept:
Posters were asked to write a three page script utilizing some character, team, or plot device decided upon by the winner of the previous Sequential Art Challenge. Writers had approximately two weeks to submit their scripts.

The third theme, suggested by KWW, winner of Sequential Art Challenge #2, was "Batman & Catwoman". How that's interpreted was entirely up to each participant.

Now, using the winning script, found below, artists will submit their sequentials and, after a couple weeks, they'll be voted on as well.

There are no rules other than following the theme and meeting the deadline. There are no prizes, so those of you just wanting to have fun shouldn't be discouraged from participating, even if you are unsure of your talent.

For this second round, sequentials will be Due on Sunday, April 20 by Midnight EST.

So have fun!

PAGE ONE

(OK sue me – I love Splash pages) The scene is a dark and dimly lit room, very spare, sort of like a storage unit. Batman’s arms are bound to ropes that come down from the ceiling, his legs chained to the floor. He should have a furious look on his face.

Catwoman is grinning before him, clutching her whip.

CATWOMAN: “There! Thanks to my Cat-Nip knockout gas, you’re now helpless under my power!”

PAGE TWO

Panel 1: Closeup of Batman’s face, sideways shot – and Catwoman’s index finger and long sharp nail are directly under his chin.

CATWOMAN: “And soon, my purrr-fectly helpless Dark Knight, you’ll reveal to me the Wayne Foundation’s secret bank account codes!”

BATMAN: “NEVER.”

Panel 2: Catwoman lashes her whip at Batman, and the part of his costume that covers his torso and arms is ripped off.

CATWOMAN: “That’s fine – I’m certain the Injustice Society will double whatever is in the Wayne Foundation’s coffers for your head!”

Panel 3: Catwoman lashes at Batman’s left leg, ripping the costume and leaving it bare.

BATMAN: “I’ll find a way out of your trap.”

Panel 4: Catwoman lashes at his right leg, same effect. Batman is now only dressed in cowl, cape, utility belt, briefs and boots.

PAGE THREE

Panel 1: A door to the room is seen slowly creaking open. Dialogue from Batman and Catwoman will be off-panel (you will see word balloons but not the actual characters).

BATMAN: “We’ll see if you keep boasting once I have you in my Bat-Cuffs.”

CATWOMAN: “Mrrrow. I’d better remove your utility belt, then…”

Panel 2: We see a dark-haired nine year old girl poking her head through the door with a curious expression on her face.

GIRL: “Mommy? Daddy? I heard noises…”

Panel 3: Shot of Batman and Catwoman. Catwoman buries her face in the palms of her hands. Batman is still tied up.

BATMAN: “Helena – it’s past your bedtime, sweetheart.”

Does anyone wanna give a shout-out that is going to introduce some pencils? I assume KWW is since he seems ready to lock and load. He got's some sharp lead so I was curious to see who is gonna get in as well.

I've gotten a start on this. Thank you, Indigo Al, for the splash page! Batman is easy enough to position, the fun is in figuring out how to place Catty. Is her back to him, front to us? Or do we see her backside? Life's rough, huh?

The second page is the action page. Catty's whippin' the man and tearing up clothing, leaving him pretty exposed! This is actually more challenging to get right. Still working on it. Also, is panel 4 a real money shot? Or is it just part of the page?

Haven't gotten to page 3 yet.

I have roughs done and a pretty good idea of how I want to handle this, but I am going to take my time on it.

And this illustrates the problem with how I laid out my script. So again I say, folks, take all kinds of liberties with the paneling and layout.

I can't WAIT TO SEE EVERYONE'S ENTRY!!!

I'm working on sketches tonight, I don't have any bristol right now (might buy some tomorrow), and my scanner is too small and I don't have photoshop (I'll try piecing the two scans together, but I don't know if I have a picture editting software capable of doing so without ruining it.

So, wish me luck. But I'm working on it. I'll try my best to get it done in time (really darn busy over here).

You could take the pages to a print shop and take them down60% and they should fit in your scanner.

Thanks. Would a regular library copy machine be able to do it? I've never fiddled with the controls before, just straight copying.

Anyway, did layouts on 8X11s and breakdowns(what would be my pencils if I were inking) on 13X17. I know, not quite standard, but neither am I.

I really like this story a lot more than I thought I would. My pages might come out bad, but I'm really digging them right now, and the stuff that's in the script translates well to panel transitions although I think I added 1 panel, maybe 2, sue me  ).

Just keeping you updated so anyone who wants to kick my @$$ needs to get some work done soon. Nice work Zeb. I had a completely different approach with the panel layout. I never realized how much as an artist, I can overcomplicate things until I see you approach the same thing. Even the third page, which is only 3 panels, one mostly black with just words, I didn't realize how open to interpretation it could be.

I know, I should have already known all this, but I've never worked off the same script as someone else before.

sorry if this is a double post, the thing kinda shut out on me.

One panel is mostly black. The door creaking. Or I guess you could have a brown door. My door is black.

I drew the right script, right?

I wonder if it would be better to post this and upgrade as I go or after it is 100% done. The 100% reveal is more dramatic but it seems like you learn more about process doing it little by little.

We can probably make an "art challenge odds and ends" thread, where people can post their sketches, and layouts and some half-done work or costume designs, whatever pertaining to the art in the contest.

It'd be cool, a nice way to get feedback on every aspect of sequential art.

I was having trouble with my first page and couldn't figure out why, then I realized it was boring! And recomposed.

Looks awesome Vik. I was actually working on a few Cat-woman costume designs (trying to incorporate maybe, the batman boot spikes to hint that they were on good terms before the big reveal), and one of them involved a bandana that had cat ears in it like little Helena (I thought it was ninja-y). I'm not inked yet, so I won't be using that design. It looks better on the kid.

Nuts, Squared. This will be tough to match, let alone beat! Your panel layout is very dynamic. #$%&*#@! This was really well done!

Outstanding job, as always VIk! Hope I make the deadline. I'm a little behind where I had planned to be by this point, but mine is coming along. I'll probably post day-of the deadline or bust it by a few days.

I just spent a good 7-8 hours working on this.

Lots of fun. I don't care if it comes out crap. My second page is NOT for people new to comics, though. I think I had too much fun on it.

I'm not sure how much time I'll actual hlyave to work on it until the deadline, I've only got major stuff to do on one page, but then I need to shrink it down and scan it/upload, and it might not even read shrunken.

My hands and work area are a complete mess too. No wonder I don't do this more often.

I think I'm done. If my attempt at scanning and piecing fails, I'll probably fiddle with it more, and go to staples to resize it. I kept trying with a copy machine, but it kept giving me a cut-off image no matter what I tried.
