So, as I have been reminded, the New York City Comic Con (http://www.nycomiccon.com/App/homepage.cfm?moduleid=2577&appname=100453) is two weeks from now, April 18-20.

Some of us will be attending all 3 days, some of us not.

The questions is, after you've got all your sketches gathered, comics bought and signed, do you want to show off your stash to your fellow nerds?

Who's going to be in town and who wants to meet up? Speak up, these things take planning.

I don't know if I'll be going during the day Friday, but I'll be there Saturday and Sunday, and I'm definitely open to hanging out every night that weekend. I really liked that place we went to after the con on Sunday last year, but you know me, I can pretty much show up anyplace.

Okay, I'll be at O'Farrell's, located at 413 Tenth Avenue at the corner of 33rd Street tonight at 9pm.

It's only about a block away from Javits, so it might be packed, but we shall see. If we need to move from there, then that's fine, too.

So anyone who wants to meet up tonight, you can meet me there.

Hey guys! I just got back from the Saturday show and I had a ton of fun.

http://www.nycomiccon.com/images/100453/2008_NEWGraphics/main_header1.gif

This was my first time at a comic convention so it was a LOT to absorb and take in. I had 3 other buddies with me and we had planned to go to the Stan Lee conference but unfortunately I got separated from the group. So I hung out at the Artist Alley and I chatted it up with a lot of artists and creators as well as some podcasters (Comic Geek Speak and Raging Bullets) who were all really friendly guys.

Here's the list of creators I talked to:

Stan Lee!

While fans were waiting on line to get into the convention, Stan Lee came around and shook people's hands. I wasn't about to pass that up so I shook his hand even if for a moment. I think I can die in peace now.

Andy Schmidt: Right when I walked into the show I knew who he was and I greeted Andy and told him how much I loved Annihilation, he seemed glad to hear it. I asked if he was doing anything in that cosmic area but he said no that he wasn't but he was looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy. He also told me that he was planning to launch that book out of Annihilation but that it was too early to release it at that point.

Andy was telling me about his upcoming X-Men work and he showed me a wicked piece of Havok done by Frazier Irving. I told him to be on the look-out for Quasar fans and we had a good laugh and I thanked him again. He's a stand up guy, was very glad to have met him on a whim like that.

Jim Steranko: He had a bunch of his stuff either already signed or ready to sign. He was the second creator I saw and recognized. I didn't get to say hi but I looked at his stuff and he seemed really polite to his fans. I personally dig his stuff but I didn't really read a whole lot of his stuff at this point outside of an issue or two of his Nick Fury stuff (and I plan to remedy this).

Frank Brunner: While the name had sounded familar to me, I wasn't sure if I was familar to his work. I didn't really have much of a discussion with him but I saw him sketching a Dr. Strange piece and he confirmed it and I complemented on how awesome it looked. He seemed pretty quiet and kept to himself but I'm going to look up his work online.

Khoi Pham: Very cool dude! I introduced myself to Khoi and told him how much I dug his work, he had various art laid out on his table and he was cool enough to show con-goers his upcoming Mighty Avengers work and I have to tell you, it looked AWESOME.

It's similar to his Incredible Herc style with a bit of a Olivier Coipel dashed in, I noticed an great panel with a Defenders super skrull and a bunch of shots of NY and the Stark/Sentry tower. I honestly think you guys are going to be blown away by his art. Unfortunately I couldn't spend more time talking to him about the Avengers stuff but all in all, he was really friendly and great to talk to.

David Mack: When I passed by his table I was like "whoah it's David Mack!" and he let me peruse through his prints and artwork, it was just beautiful stuff and there was one piece in particular that was really strange but extremely cool which was a He-Man/She-Ra piece. I had bought 2 prints from him which David graciously signed (I hope he doesn't mind that I show them):

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/6674/spideymackrt5.th.jpg (http://img187.imageshack.us/my.php?image=spideymackrt5.jpg)

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/3365/echomackbx8.th.jpg (http://img186.imageshack.us/my.php?image=echomackbx8.jpg)

David was an incredibly nice guy and I told him that I really dug his different style on New Avengers, he thanked me and showed me a bunch of his other stuff on the table that used his more pencil and ink style. I would have loved to have picked more of his stuff up if I wasn't on a budget. Oh and his other childrens book "The Shy Creatures" looked great and very much a departure from his usual style. So a huge thanks goes out to David!

Steve McNiven: Steve had a nice bit of sketches for sale and he was drawing while I was checking them out. He had a particularly cool piece that caught my eye which was a very detailed Spider-Man sketch that was similar to his Old Man Logan style.

I began talking to Steve about how much I loved his work and how similar in style the Spider-Man sketch looked to his upcoming Logan book with Mark. He thanked me and explained a bit about his proccess behind the more hatched look and explained to me that he wanted to do a more detailed and different look for the book. He also said that he liked working with Mark Millar and I told him that I couldn't wait for his stuff, I then excused myself and thanked him for his time and to keep up the good work. Steve was very approachable and down to earth, all around a very cool dude.

Mark Morales and Dexter Vines: These two gentlemen were seated right next to each other and I talked Mark and Dexter a bit and I told them how much I dug their inking and how they were similar. I think I told Mark this and he laughed a bit and told Dexter what I had said but I then made my myself a bit clearer and told Mark that they had a similar clean crisp style.

Mark and I talked in brief about Secret Invasion and he told me that #2 which is out in a few weeks is going to blow our socks off. They had original art on sale of the inks over Leinil Yu and they looked great, unfortunately they were way out of my price range but considering that they were Secret Invasion pages, they were really hot and sought after pieces. Mark and Dex were good guys.

Peter David: I didn't have anything in particular for him to sign for me but I had talked to him a bit and told him how great he was on the forums. He responded in a pretty funny way when it came to people on these forums who he said that needed a bit of a butt kicking or who piss him off (I'm paraphrasing here David!).

Me being an idiot I forgot the title of the Death of Jean DeWolff and I had asked him if he knew if they would re-release a new collection or trade of his Sin-Eater story, Peter then told me that he didn't know if that was in the works or not which is kind of a downer. I then complemented his work on the follow-up story he did to Death of Jean DeWolff and he thanked me for the compliment. After that I thanked him again for his great work on Spider-Man and bid him farewell.

Peter was really good to his fans and it was a joy to talk to him even in brief.

Len Wein (co-creator of Swamp Thing, Wolverine): Len was sitting right next to Peter in Artist Alley and I thought I'd say hi to the guy who freaking created Wolverine! I said to him that I picked up his first Swamp Thing trade and how much I enjoyed it as well as for creating Wolverine (which he had a shirt of!). I then mentioned that he was really funny and great on the Fantastic Four 2 DVD where he's with his buddy Marv Wolfman talking about the Kirby stuff blowing his mind.

He then jokingly commented to me and Peter David on how another fan made a similar coment about another appearance he did on a DVD and that he was surprised that people know him from the DVD stuff. Unfortunately I really didn't have much else to say to the guy so there was a bit of an awkward pause after that (probably more on my end since I haven't checked out a whole lot of his current stuff) but I thanked him for his stuff nontheless and that it was really cool meeting him.

Phil Jimenez & Andy Lanning: This was a really funny meeting, I was walking around the show floor and I saw him walking right past me. I said "Hey, Phil Jimenez!" and he smiled and said "Yup" or something along those lines and I shook his hand. I think he was on his way to the bathroom or something so he was in kind of a rush but Phil was a real nice guy for doing that. I saw him a bit later sitting next to his inker and fellow writer Andy Lanning who I had the pleasure of talking to as well.

I talked to Andy for just a bit but I saw him drawing a really cool Nova skrull for a fan. I told him how much I enjoyed his Annihilation and Nova work and he asked me if I was looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy and I told him "Heck yeah!" and I also told Andy how much of a shock it was to see the main threat be Ultron and he said that's what they were really going for.

I actually wanted to ask him something about Captain Universe and if he was going to show up but I think he had to step out for a bit but Andy was very proper and a real stand up guy. He really showed a lot of enthusiasm for the cosmic stuff, as a neat bonus I got a real thrill out of seeing Phil ask Andy if his pencils needed tightening so it's really cool to see a bit of a live creative process.

Tom Raney & Scott Hanna: I met these gentlemen a little further down from Steve Epting and they were a blast to talk to. Both were very enthusiastic and happy to have been involved with Annihilation Conquest and Tom was signing away some Warlock books that he did back then. I asked him if he did the redesign on Ultron and he said that that was him. I asked him kind of dumb question in how he was able to put that much detail into him but he answered nicely and said that he just puts a lot of work into it.

Scott Hanna was drawing a really neat sketch of Captain Marvel and another of Cannonball. I didn't know that he also drew and I told him that his stuff looked really good and very detailed, he said "thanks" and that he wants to branch off to do more pencil work but that he sees that Marvel values him more as an inker. Hopefully we'll see your stuff somewhere down the line Scott!

When I met Simonson, we had a pretty interesting conversation;

I said, "What ho, All-Father Simonson, could'st thou scribe thine signature 'pon my three-hundred thirty-seventh Thor?"

And he was all. "This issue is older than you are, isn't it?"

And I replied. "The one known as Beta Ray Bill doth cling to mine heartstrings as much as one could claim a cyborg alien horse can."

"Sure, I'll just sign this then."

"Verily cool."

I had some cool chats with Reilly Brown and Joe Kelly, the latter of which told me his pitch for an origin of Blind Al story that would have been published under his Deadpool tenure. And then I talked to Ethan Van Sciver for about a hour concerning his future projects and some of the Corps characters he designed. He's got ideas for every character in a spread he drew, no lie.

Comic-Con rules.

Joe Kelly is a really down to earth guy. He told me that Deadpool was the most fun he'd ever had writing comics. We talked about Deadpool for a good half hour. I even introduced him to Reilly Brown, and they had a really great chat about all things Deadpool, particularly what they would've done had they stayed their respective books longer.

Oh, and I asked him about the second Space Ghost miniseries that was supposed to happen, and he said he wasn't doing that one (he also added that it was going to have Moltar), but he was going to get started on miniseries for Jonny Quest and a miniseries for The Herculoids. He said that when DC got a hold of all the Toth creations from back in the day and wanted to reinvent them, he was the first to volunteer.

He's just awesome.

I got a copy of Van Sciver's sketchbook. He made a joke about how his signature (when he does it fast and doesn't completely do that diamond shape around it) kinda looks like a swastika.

So he said that he wanted to put his quick-style signature in in a white circle with a red background as one of those big poster sheets behind him, all while selling a sketchbook titled "My Struggle" with Sinestro on the cover (who's as Hitlery as it gets in the DCU).

Hilarious.

He introduced me to Geoff Johns too, and while I didn't get to talk to him much, I mentioned "Barry Allen" and "The Black Corps" in the same sentence and he grinned smugly and laughed. I wasn't sure what to make of it, but it was rather interesting.

Ethan dropped clues that Johns was working on something fundamentally bigger than The Blackest Night and Final Crisis for 2010. He was all "Do you trust us?" and I was like "You brought back Cyborg Superman, I would totally walk into a burning building if you said it was safe." And he said, "The stuff he'll say about it down the road is going to sound ridiculous. You just have to trust us."

And I'm a little weird and kinda lucid in thought sometimes, so I nodded, paused, and asked him if he uses his wife as a model for Star Sapphire. I don't think he heard me.

The guy's great. He's got a real love for what he does and he can reconut all of his favorite moments from back in the day.

LOL @ the swastika thing. But wait, Geoff working on something bigger than Blackest Night and Final Crisis? Insanity.

Insanity indeed. We've just got to trust them, I guess.

And another tidbit, Arthur Suydam is a jerk. I brought Marvel Zombies #1, Marvel Zombies 2 #1, and the Thor #1 variant for him to sign. I give him the three (3) issues, and he smiles and says "20 bucks". But he had this smirk on his face so I thought he was kidding. And I go "Oh, you're giving out signed prints too? That seems like a fair pri--" and he cut me off an said. "I'll sign one comic for free."

Jerk. Geoff Johns signed more than 10 issues for me and gave me a few good quips and hints about future stuff. For free. There need to be more amicable creators like Joe Kelly or Geoff Johns or the [very very] stressed out Ivan Reis. People paid that guy for so many sketches, he only did signings at the DC Booth.

Funny about that too, at the same signing as Reis, Van Sciver actually got up and walked away from the DC Booth because, and I quote him, "I know I have fans waiting for me at my Artist's Alley table, and they've got better conversation. Also; nobody ogles my wife when I'm not around! Nobody!"

Ethan is such a riot.

Sorry, Joe. My camera was (and is) broken last nights, so I didn't get any karaoke pics. I have some pics from the con, before, on the memory card, and I have some from a disposable camera that I'm going to get put on a CD this week, but that's it.

On Friday, that guy was Zapp Brannigan and he looked dead on. And that Harley Quinn was the best out of the three I saw.

I saw a girl in a Spider-Woman costume today that was just dynamite. With a capital 36DD.

I saw another girl dressed as a Green Lantern on Saturday. Her costume was remarkably similar to Katma Tui's, I think.

I made eye contact with her, but didn't realize it was actually her until after I went home and IM'd her. Apparently, she recognized me near the end of the show, but wasn't sure if it was actually me either.

I can indeed confirm that she is a girl. And that she owns a faded Captain America hoop shirt. And she's far from being horribly scarred and brooding like her internet namesake.

I almost got thrown out because I was yelling at Frank Miller who was above talking to us directly and having some court jester give and take stuff to be signed.

And I got thrown out of the Marvel booth because I "mistook" Chris Claremont for John Byrne and told him how much I loved his artwork. And when he told me that he was actually Claremont, to my "shock", I told him that Sage wasn't an X-Man no matter how much he wanted her to be. And the guy behind me had murder in his eyes.

And I called Phil Jimenez a jerk after a long argument, the superfluousness of the argument which made Keith Giffen crack up laughing.

I am. That was pretty much the limit of ballsy stuff I did at the con.

I'll expand on my Claremont story a little. I was waiting on line for a signing of some old Uncanny issues he did that a friend of mine let me borrow to get them signed.

So I hand him a stack of 5 or 10 issues (that Dark Pheonix Cover and Days of Future Past being among them, 1st app Kitty Pryde, just the important ones, really) and he signs them fast, and when he finishes the last one, I go;

"Mr. Byrne, I gotta say, I really love your work."

And he gives me this look, and one of the Marvel interns was like "Uh, that's Chris Claremont."

And then I was like "Oh. Well, then I just wanna say that Sage isn't really an X-Man."

And then before the bloated 40 year old fanboy behind me could pounce, I was gestured to leave by the Marvel intern.

Yeah, if that stuff wasn't some sort of joke about bad behavior at a con, not cool.

-Brian

In my defense, with Miller I was sort of jumping on the bandwagon amongst other people, but with Claremont it was a dare from the same friend who gave me the issues. Jimenez was just being a jerk and not signing anything for anybody, so I called him on it and Giffen laughed and shook his head, because a line was building up to Jimenez and they all were cursing to themselves for having waited when he wasn't doing anything but sketches.

But don't get me wrong, I had a lot of good connections with the creator-types too. I had a long chat with Joe Kelly about his years on Deadpool and the unpublished origin of Blind Al, Reilly Brown was as awesome as the last time I met him and did a Skrullpool (http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/9828/reillyskrullpx9.jpg) sketch and sold me a page from C&DP, Walt Simonson and I quipped in olde english, and Jim Calafiore did a sketch of Thorpool (http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/5633/thorpoolcalafioresf8.jpg) for me.

And I may have convinced Ethan Van Sciver to put a male Violet Lantern in Blackest Night. And maybe get his wife to dress up as Star Sapphire once. Maybe.

I am very very very sorry that I was not able to go out with you all on Saturday Night like we were planning. By the time my wife and I were finished walking the con and attending one panel (Where a douche fell on us chasing a DVD that was thrown into the crowd. The kind of douche that makes me ashamed to like comics) we were burnt.

We got a slice of Pizza and headed back to the ferry to go to the car. On the way we stopped at the blood mobile and donated some vital fluids.

Lena & Das, thanks so much for calling me. I am sorry I left everyone's numbers at home.

Jeff and Micheal it was great to met you guys. There was a little "first date" kind of vibe to it but it was neat.

Thanks Jeff for showing me what you are working on. I should have asked this then, but I was surprised you were working full scale and not 2:1.

I will be in town for the licensing show in June so I will definitely try and meet up with everyone then if I do not go to MOCCA.

Thanks everyone for their hospitality and eagerness to meet up. I again apologize I could not stay out.

When we do meet up, first round is on me.

I can dig the Miller thing, but you acted like a giant douche. You're why some creators won't even do cons.

I suppose you're right, but even then, I was rather peeved that Jimenez was only really catering to people paying for stuff. Honestly, if the guy was like "Okay, I'll sign the one issue you have in your hands." I would have been all "Mr. Jimenez, Infinite Crisis was awesome, and I really digged the arc on Amazing. You're cool." But he didn't, and he couldn't even bother to take a 5 second break.

Arthur Sudyam was just about the same way, but with greed. I had Marvel Zombies #1, Marvel Zombies 2 #1, and the zombie variant to Thor #1 in my hands. I pass it to him, and he goes "$20". I laugh and go, "Oh, what, for a print?" And then with a really stern look on his face, he says "I'll sign one for free." So I gave him one issue and walked away scared. It wasn't like I had every cover of Marvel Zombies or Moon Knight with me, just three issues.

Ivan Reis had to have at least 15-20 commissions to do in that weekend. And even still, he would sign one or two issues per person in between sketches. And even then, he had to go for signings in the DC booth periodically. He really loves what he does, and he has an appreciation for the fans. That's why he's awesome, and that's why I have to be first on his list for a drawing next year.

Speaking of that, I just have a deep appreciation for creators who love the medium. Dan Slott told me his plans for Thing if it had gone another arc, the possibility of another GLA mini in the future, and dropping a few hints towards the Reckoning War. He also has a fantastic Thing impression. You have to hear it, because it's just dead-on.

I already mentioned Joe Kelly and how we had a good long chat, Reilly Brown talking about his upcoming projects and get this, I even got him to talk with Joe Kelly after the show. That's two of my heroes discussing Deadpool, both of whom would love to return to the book someday. One can dream.

Steve McNiven was a pretty cool guy. Giffen and Maguire are like a live Blue Beetle and Booster Gold. Van Sciver told me as much as he could about Blackest Night, and Geoff John's future project that's bigger than Blackest Night and Final Crisis.

Geoff Johns was cool, but very stressed out because of the amount of signings. And he actually thanked me for bringing books for him to sign. I said "No, man, thank you. You totally revamped DC and Green Lantern and brought back Cyborg Superman from obscurity to totally frickin' awesome. You're the best."

And I shook his hand, and he gave me a thumbs up, and he told me to look out for Black Hand appearances in upcoming solicits.

Awesome. What did he win/win for?
Basically it works like this:

You can choose from several categories (including acronyms, secret identities, Color names, etc).Get the answer right, win a prize. You can win better prizes as questions go on, and your win pile stacks up. Or you can just cut and run. However, one wrong answer, and you lose it, and someone else has the opportunity to win that stuff.

Chris waited until the prizes stacked up, and then answered a question no one could answer.

"Who was the director of security for Project Pegasus?"

"Blue Shield."

He won two of those titanium die cast figure/statue things, a Invisible Woman sketch done by the Marvel Adventures FF person, A funny Greg Pak Hulk sketch, autographed Secret Invasion and New Warriors comics, and Skrull masks signed by Ed Brubaker, Kevin Grievoux, Dan Slott, and Greg Pak. And a Spider-Man tin lunch box.

Mmm, dollar corn dogs. Except wait, I should have something of an expense account this year!

The food was ridiculously expensive.

I braved hot dogs from outsidefor a buck a piece.
I kind of knew going into the con that everything would be overpriced.

I braved it out and just ate once I got outside to that pizzeria up the block but there was also a McDonalds and several other stores full of junk food.

Another round of pics from me. These are all from the crappy disposable camera I picked up after my regular one went boom.

Koop was there. He says hi.

This was one of the coolest areas of the con: A place near the stage filled with beanbags for nerds to rest their weary bones on.

The Jedi training grounds were pretty busy all weekend.

And finally, a last couple of costume pics:

I have no idea who she's supposed to be, but I'm impressed that she was able to see enough to walk.

There were several Zatannas throughout the weekend. These two squared off to determine who would hold the title. Whom do you trust?
