View Full Version : My Own Worst Enemy Covers

I just blogged about another subgenre of cover that I may or may not have invented.

I call them "My Own Worst Enemy Covers", and it's anytime the lead characters seem to be getting into fisticuffs with him or herself.

There are many, many more out there. What are some of your favourites?

Those are great. That Captain America was one of the first comic books I ever owned, as was this one:

Another fave:

A similar 'genre' that I love are the covers where a hero and his secret identity appear on the same cover. These seem to have been especially popular with Superman:

I KNEW IT! Whenever LR starts one of these cover searches, I just go to Tomahawk covers and they have yet to let me down:

TOMAHAWK 63 (http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=15108&zoom=4)

Uhh...but the guy who wrote the cover copy kinda gives the whole thing away. I bet Mort Weisinger wouldn't have wasted an opportunity like this to separate kids from their dimes.

Not a Dream!!! Not An Imaginary Story!!!!

Don't Dare Miss this issue of TOMAHAWK!!!!!!"

Sort of. That classic was the mid-point of the series. The title expired at issue 100, in which the Thing teams up with... Ben Grimm, from an alternate reality.

Here you go Kirk. Both issues were written by John Byrne. But if you ever wanted to see great Joe Sinnott pencils (most of us only get to see his accomplished ink jobs) issue #50 of MTIO offers a good chance. I see the layouts are Byrnes, but Sinnott both, beautifully, pencils and inks the book. Very nice work. Issue #100 is given over to the handiwork of Ron Wilson.

I was out of comics during this period, but found a bunch of cap issues in the 35 cent box of a comic book store, and saw all of these covers but not the interiors. I wisely avoided buying them infavor of the issues leading up to John Byrne/Roger Stern run, but found I really didn't need them, and didn't care either.

But I got the jist of it that there were some inmitators... in the 50s, and that they were/became deranged.

The question is begged:
Who was the first costumed hero in comics to duel with a doppelganger?
Hour-Man tangled with an impersonator in his fifth appearance, in 1940*. Although it didn't make the cover, that must at least be a contender for first place.

*I've been reading The JSA All-Stars Archive Volume 1, and it's hands-down the most enjoyable of the Golden Age DC archives I've read! I wouldn't have guessed that I'd enjoy Johnny Thunder and Mr. Terrific and the Atom as much as I did! I think the smaller doses (this volume includes the first five solo adventures of all those characters as well as Dr. Mid-Nite and Wildcat) serves the material much better than a standard Archive-size overdose would have. And the Atom stories have a very curious...err...let's just say there's a certain visual motif in them that I've never seen any comments about.

That's the gist of the first of the first one (a ret-con to explain the boderline fascist "Captain America, Commie Smasher" comics [n.b. not their real title] of the 50s, which couldn't have been the real Cap as he'd been frozen since the end of WWII). The imposter Bucky later went on to become Nomad.

The other two deal with a giant Captain America robot called the Ameridroid (a Red Skull creation, I think, although I may be misremembering).

Say, has the story arc that depicts the duplicate Superman as made of sand (and the end of Kryptonite, et cetera) ever been collected or reprinted? Your display of Superman 238 brought that to mind.
In fact, who knows exactly which issues are covered in this arc?
Where they not drawn by Neal Adams?

I believe it was issues #233-238 and #240-242. One of those issues, maybe #236, was only tangentially related to the Sand Superman story, and #239 was an all-reprint issue.

I don't believe any of those stories were drawn by Neal Adams. I think they were all by Swan and Anderson.

This story would be a good candidate for reprinting, though. It was essentially the starting point of the modern Superman, and it's also a fantastic story, although it does exhibit Denny O'Neil's tendency toward over-writing.

Hi, foxley! I don't want to speak for Kirk G, but I put up the scan without comment because I thought Kirk was asking to see the cover of this particular issue he recalled with an imposter.

The first time the story was reprinted, Marvel added a cover blurb that identified the people in the shadows as the Howling Commandos.

http://www.comics.org/graphics/covers/7233/400/7233_4_085.jpg

I haven't read the comic, but I have read a synopsis or two of it. The "Fury" on the cover is either the imposter Fury who is out to destroy the Commandos, or else it is supposed to be the real Nick Fury -- who returns to find he's not as trusted as he was before he left. If the "Hero" of the added cover blurb is an address to Fury and not to the reader, then it might mean Fury came back to the base to witness the imposter Fury going against the Howlers.

The imposter, as you may know, is none other than The Red Skull.

The imposter and the real Fury do interact more than once during the story, but the imposter has other identities he's using besides playing Fury. I'll let Kirk take it from here, if he would like.

You are correct, sir.
The story is basically how the Skull, impersonating Happy Sam Sawyer, sends Fury on some silly mission... and then impersonates Fury and sabotages the base. Fury, returning, runs into the Howlers, who can't believe that it was Fury who did it.(There were several run ins with Bull McGovern (sp?) the loud-mouth foil for Fury, and he gets his clock cleaned.)

Ultimately, Fury figures there's a double, and catches him trying to escape. He whips the disguised skull in a fair fight (impressing the skull with Fury's fury) and leaves him tied up in a rubber dingy (don't recall why) when he goes with the Howlers probably to undo the skull's deeds. When they return, the imposter has escaped.

No one ever knows that it was the skull...out of mask... in disguise.

And Bull get's his lights punched out when he tries to brag about beating Fury earlier (it was the skull).

I don't recall Fury ever facing "himself" I just remember the cover, which I think was reprinted two or three times (!) afterwards in the same continuing title...

So, no, I don't think this really qualifies... but it was fun to remember & retell!

I knew there had to be at least one She-Hulk version of this, given how popular it is with her cousin:

On the cover, these imposters aren't specifically shown fighting Casper or "being bad." In fact, they look quite happy. However, the real Casper does look quite concerned (haunted, even) about their presence! I don't have this comic, but there must be some sort of confrontation scene inside the book, right?

Even if it just turns out they're friendly shapeshifters from outer space. http://forums.comicbookresources.com/images/editor/smilie.gif

I think Superman is probably the all-time champion, but Wonder Woman must be close second. Hulk is a strong contender for third, jusging from what we've seen here.

Here's Wonder Girl, rather than Wonder Woman:

Earth-1 Superman versus Earth-3 Ultraman probably deserves at least half-credit -- especially if Supes supporters want to put this contest out of Wonder Woman's reach. Ultraman may not wear an S-shield or red trunks like Superboy, Earth-2 Superman, or even Bizarro. But besides a blue uniform and red cape and boots, Ultraman does have Superman's face, give or take.

Bonus: Though this earlier cover appears to show Junior getting along nicely with his doubles, it does say the doubles are dangerous. Since it's from 1943, I'll include it for historical perspective -- even though no blows are exchanged and no enmity is witnessed on the cover itself.

Hmmm...good eye. I hadn't noticed that. Looking it up, I see it mentioned on a few sites, but only as a mystery. Something about a 10 cent ashcan Superman/Superhombre. It also appears on a variant of Superman #409.

Using multiversal counterparts rather than same-earth impostors or duplicates, Superman and Wonder Woman continued to add to their big totals in this category with COUNTDOWN: ARENA.

http://www.comics.org/covers.lasso?SeriesID=27745 (http://www.comics.org/covers.lasso?SeriesID=27745)

(And one or both of these Wonder Woman covers could qualify as a "Don't Tread on Me" cover, too!)

But I think perhaps "Batman vs. Batman vs. Batman" is my favorite cover showcased in that ARENA.

Though Comics.org doesn't yet show the variant/alternate "Batman vs. Batman vs. Batman" cover from COUNTDOWN: ARENA, it can be found at Mile High.

Amazingly, not only does Bats's alternate cover likewise qualify in the "Own Worst Enemy" category, but it comes close to being a "Dinosaur Dentist Cover," tooth!
