CHALLENGE 5: REFRESHING

This is Project CBRunway. You're either in or you're out. Who will be CBR’s next big comic character designer?

Good morning, designers. Welcome back to the runway.

It's not unusual for a comic character of a bygone era to be used in the present...either through plot devices like time travel or suspended animation or in the form of a legacy character.

For your fifth challenge you must update one of the designs from Challenge 4 (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=215745) to be worn by a character in the modern era. This character may be male or female, powered or unpowered. The costume may consist of natural or synthetic materials.

HOWEVER, a character may only be chosen once. Each character has been randomly assigned a number between (1) and (20). Designers will choose their state by posting their pick of a number between (1) and (20), upon which the character they've picked will be added to the list below. Numbers may be picked only once, on a first come, first served basis.

You will be judged on creativity and how well your design fits in the modern era while maintaining the spirit of the original.

In addition to the required written description explaining material, functionality and design inspiration, you should include a brief explanation of who your character is and why they're wearing an adaptation of a Golden Age identity.

Submission Requirements

Artwork may be done in any medium but must be in color.
Artwork may be no larger than 550-pixels wide and 800-pixels long.
Entries must be inserted into your PM, using such services as Photobucket.com or imageShack.com. If you are unable to use such a service you may e-mail (mattbib@comcast.net) your entry and we will host the image for you for the duration of the competition.
All submissions should include a written description of the costume, explaining, to the best of your ability, material, functionality, design inspiration, etc. Some rounds may have additional written requirements.
Write-ups are to be no longer than a single PM, which is limited to 5,000 characters, including your image address and all formatting and image tags. You have only five days, through Midnight PDT of Monday, April 7, to Private Message (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=342) (PM) me your entry for this week’s challenge. Be sure to select “Request a read receipt for this message” in the Additional Options section before sending. Failure to complete a challenge will result in immediate elimination from Project CBRunway. There will be no extensions or exceptions.

Aljira, you won the last challenge and are safe from elimination... unless you fail to submit an entry.

Post any questions, comments, or concerns about this challenge in this thread, however please do not comment on submissions until the voting thread is posted this coming Tuesday.

Designers, make it work!

The challenge is giving us the leeway to update however we see fit. You can bring her forward to the future, start her over, make her a him.....as long as you can show the connection the limits are your imagination. At least that's how I'm reading it.

I personally am planning on doing more a legacy character than an update or a time-tossed version. Of course I'll change my mind on that a trillion times before I post my entry.....

This presupposes that the costumed identity already existed in their universe.

What I get from that is it's kind of like The Flashes and Green Lanterns, where the hero identity stays essentially the same, but the identity is handed down to younger generations and heavily altered to fit the modern world.

However, I don't see why it can be in the same vein as Superman and Batman characters where only minor costume alteration have been added during the last 60 years. "If it ain't broke...", but I guess there's no real challenge in that so former idea should be more appealing to the voters this round.

You're free to do that; I'd consider it a calculated risk. Just remember what this challenge is being judged on and who your audience is. If you take a male GA character and slap a skirt on it and call it a modernization, well, there's no creativity or design involved in that and voters would skewer you.

But if you take a female character from the GA, make the modern version a male character and slap a skirt on him and keep the female name, well, that's bloody GENIUS!

Which is not to say that I'm turning Land Girl into a (god help me for quoting the most annoying television personality since MTV's Kennedy) hot tranny mess....I'm just sayin'.......

I think this challenge will show which designs in the previous round had the strongest Golden Age influences.

The greater the difference between Golden Age and Modern, the more succesful the original costume.

Within reason of course (giving a character wildly futuristic elements when previously there were none... is not so much within reason)

Oh by the way...

looking at my signature... there has to be some irony in the fact that I'm updating DAZZLER's costume...

So the PM thing is that for this challenge only, or will it carry through the rest of this years competition?
For those fortunate to make it throgh that is.

Also, can the play along at home guys just choose whoever they want from challenge 4? will they be exempt from posting directly in there as well?

Play Along is informal and should stick to redesigning other play along designs. They can post in that thread whenever they like.

looking at my signature... there has to be some irony in the fact that I'm updating DAZZLER's costume...

I noticed that! I thought it was pretty funny that you got mine.
Don't worry, I'm not going to scream at you because you don't like my favorite character. It's hard to admit, but she *is* fictional. ;) And I think the signature is pretty funny, too.

I've got my story for the Copper Courtesan finished and I have to say that I absolutely adore it!
I think it honors the original without being a slave to it. And I'm working on the drawing, which is going to probably take from tonight until almost dealdine! :(

Within reason of course (giving a character wildly futuristic elements when previously there were none... is not so much within reason)

Why not? Sixty years have passed between the Golden Age and the Modern Age. There's lots of wiggle room in updates.

Heck, look at Green Lantern. The original had a magic lamp that gave him powers. The second had a power ring given to him by a dying member of an intergalactic police force.

We did that challenge last year. (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=172829) :)

PMing applies to all challenges. Play Along is informal and should stick to redesigning other play along designs. They can post in that thread whenever they like.

Well, can we draw other designs from the competition AFTER the voting thread has been posted?

I'm quite pleased to work with Poison Silhouette! I have my idea established, now to craft it!

Heh! I did about 15 different sketches! By the end, I've come up with a comopletely different idea than what I started with. I'll have to create a "This is what I was GONNA do" thread after this challenge is posted.

I won't be able to work on my final submission until Sunday night. Glad I did those prelims!

Why not? Sixty years have passed between the Golden Age and the Modern Age. There's lots of wiggle room in updates.

Because we're not taking sixty years between designs, we're taking one week. As a result, the changes will be more jarring, we don't see multiple changes made over a longer period of time. We're going to see golden age characters redesigned for the modern age, in less that a week.

The modern age, at least since 2001 or so, has been aimed at creating a realistic superhero costume. We've gone from capes and brightly coloured spandex, to black leather and street clothes, and then back to spandex again.

The real question becomes how exactly does the modern age differ from the Golden Age? I'm not talking about backstory, I'm talking about the visual design...

One easy route is to take elements from the original design and translate (or re-translate, as it were) to present day. What details can be reworked? What details are so dated they need to be dumped? What's the look/feel of the character, and how would such a character be approached in the present day? Because you don't have actual history, the challenge is how can you redesign it so that it's either a logical reinterpretation of the character, or a viable update. How the voters see the resultant update relative to the original is how you tell if your redesign resonates.

Human X-Ray was HARD. I think I did an okay job with it, but it still needs it's colours and the story thing I have in my head. Nothing too dramatic, merely a natural progression on escapegoat's idea, which was pretty hella sound to begin with.

Sooo....The Ocelot may or may not be up by deadline. It's about done(scanned and mostly colored), but technical difficulties you know, just like in college, you finish your paper and don't save it, you add the last puncuation mark and your computer decides, you've worked it hard enough.
I've got time to figure it out, so wish me the best.

Last night it took me about an hour to get my pic uploaded to the web, because our hosting server was experiencing heavy load or some other problem... hope it stays up for the contest.

Matt, if someone has problems with their hosting site after they've sent it to you, and the pic only appears as an "x" in the thread no matter how many times you refresh the screen, do you want us to email you the pic at that point for you to post it?

I've noticed one participant (can't remember who it is right now) that sometimes their host service doesn't show their pic (just an "x" box)---normally, if I refresh the screen, the pic comes up. Would you consider putting an advisement to voters in the voting thread that, if a pic is broken, to try refreshing the page?

Ahhh, the joys of technical difficulties. Sigh.

Anyway, YIP, I feel for ya. Several times I've had the power go out mid-work on a piece... and Photoshop, unlike Word, doesn't save the last files you were working on when it does that, so I've had to go back to the last saved version to start over. Which means, I tend to save frequently, when working.

I hope your technical problems get fixed in time for you to finish and send in your piece! *crosses fingers*
