View Full Version : Not optimistic, but does anyone remember/love the SKULL THE SLAYER series?

It's been 33+years since SKULL THE SLAYER came out.

I was first introduced to the characters several years after their series was cancelled when they were in a MTIO with the THING and I quickly went and got all 8 or 9 back issues of the series.

It was so different from the usual superhero fare and Skull the Viet Nam vet was a complex hero/anti hero (he even ran out and left his friends to die at one point)

The first two issues were stellar...then the series temporarily lost its way in the TIME TOWER issues but once they were returned to the Dinosaur land and the writers ended the hostility between Skull and Dr. Corey things got back on track with good writing and better artwork and I wanted to see where the subplot went with the Senator hiring Skull's enemy to find the castaways.

The series was given closure in MTIO but the writer got the characters all wrong..it was as if he didn't even read the last few issues where Skull and Corey made peace and they were back to hating each other.

I understand SKULL popped up again a decade or so ago...but what's the point if he was interactig in the regular Marvel Universe-the prehistoric setting was a key element in the series...the same way a KAZAR series without the Savage Land...just wouldn't feel right.

I read the first few issues - can't remember how far it went now after all this time, I might have read the whole run up to cancellation. I remember liking the concept - big Edgar Rice Burroughs fan here - and wishing it had continued. The was good, but not great, I thought - Steve Gan, was it? Solid enough, but nothing stand-out. I never saw the Thing team-up, and I don't think bringing Skull into the superhero world would be the best direction to tkae the concept.

Wouldn't mind seeing someone take a crack at it again. Someone should tell Warren Ellis about it, apparently he's looking for suggestions of obscure Marvel characters to re-invent.

From what I remember, the Skull the Slayer series was a total mess, due to nearly monthly changes in writer, artist and editor. Come to think of it, there were also editor-in-chief changes going on throughout the '70s. That's why the plot and tone veered wildly from issue to issue in Skull the Slayer.

FabNic brought him back in the short-lived Hawkeye series a few years ago.

yep! I just read through this series about a year ago and wrote a post about it here (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=183459&highlight=skull+slayer). If #4 was written by either Wolfman or Mantlo I feel like the title wouldn't have lost as much steam since it basically undid everything! And then Mantlo had to spend the whole next issue undoing the undo.

I remember it. I hope they will package it in an Essential. There is Marvel Horror vol 2 coming but that isn't horror. I don't know what they could package it with unless they issue it as a Marvel Premiere like they did for Omega the Unknown?
