I just received an e-mail copy of the following call for papers. I had to remove the editors' names and e-mail addresses due to concerns over spam, but I thought I would post it here anyway, since it seems like some people here might be interested in it.

CALL FOR PAPERS: REREADING VINCE COLLETTA

We are currently seeking submissions for an edited collection with the working title Rereading Vince Colletta: The Theory, History, and Politics of Defining "Good" Inking. This volume has been accepted by the University of Southeast Florida Press and a notable Colletta scholar has agreed to write a lengthy introduction.

This collection aspires to be a comprehensive survey of current scholarly debates regarding Colletta's work. We will strive for equal representation of both pro-Collettist and anti-Collettist viewpoints. We are particularly interested in essays that address the following questions:

* How might we explain the psychological dynamics of the relations between Colletta and his collaborators? Does Lacanian psychoanalysis offer a useful means of unraveling Colletta's differing relationships with Kirby, Romita, and others?

* What sort of attitudes toward race and sexuality are expressed in the alterations Colletta made to Kirby's work? How might Colletta's work have been informed by hidden classist, masculinist or other assumptions?

* When Colletta is identified as having been a "bad" inker, what implicit definitions of "good" inking are at work here? What does the critical response to Colletta's work imply about the historical evolution of standards for evaluating inking?

* Can postmodern theories of linearity, such as those developed by Derrida and J. Hillis Miller, be usefully applied to the problematic of Colletta's inking line and its relation to Kirby's pencil line?

* How did Colletta's ethnic identity as an Italian-American affect his career? How did Colletta embody or refute popular stereotypes related to Italian-American organized crime?

We welcome submissions from both the academic and fan communities. Please submit essays to [CENSORED] by April 1st, 2009.

Our Red Oak Kid will be happy to know that Mike Grell provided a cover for the book. (Inked by Vinnie, of course).

I've seen a preview of the cover and it's actually a homage to Grell by Buckler and Colletta.

Is it true that, in order to save time and printing costs, half the words in each essay will be erased? :D

You guys are mean.

Yeah, it's a rough crowd that hangs out here.

We wear windbreakers with the Bat logo on the back.

We loiter around the drug store and make fun of kids who buy Harvey comics.

We give the newstand dealer a rough time if he doesn't put out the new comics on time.

In class, we pretend to be reading our textbooks, but we are secretly reading a comic.

If we can't afford a comic, we hide it behind a copy of Good Housekeeping till we can come back with enough money to buy it.

Yeah, we bad.

When that happens, we walk out and flip the "We're Open" sign on the door, around, so it says "We're Closed". And then we run like heck.

Dammit Sir Tim, you snookered me! I bought into your post hook, line & sinker until the last line.

And on another note, yep, I was once told 'Hey Kid! This ain't no li-berry! Buy that damn comic or hit the bricks!' by the owner of a local drugstore close to 40 years ago. Today my wife (a nurse) takes care of him!

That's the best response I've seen all day! Ohhh, but we're mean....:D

Seriously, Sir Tim,
I'm very interested in this "book" and look forward to reading it.
Please keep us posted on developments, publication date, price, and anything related as it grows closer. Some of those topics are fascinating
and I never would have thought about them.

THAT's why I'm part of this forum, and why I want to read more about this man and his career. To get a balanced perspective.

Thanks!

I will say that I saw a defense of Vinnie the C. by Bob McLeod in an issue of Alter Ego recently.

And I just read a Ramona Fradon interview (also in ALTER EGO), where she mentions hating Vinnie's inks on her work.
