The issue opens up with the confrontation between Mako and Lord Burnham. Mako is convinced that he has finally gotten to the Laughing Magician. Surrounded by several armed men, Rinzen tries to fire of Bale Fire against the intruders. Mako shakes of the incantation with a smile and reveals his blood magic, declaring the potency of forty magicians running through his veins. Gloating, he plans to make it 41. The henchmen nail Rinzen down to the floor and Mako prepares the ritual, while forcing Lord Burnham to watch. Rinzen's soul is then ritually caged to his body and Mako starts the interrogation. He finds the tree root only to discover it was booby trapped... Though he now possesses the memories he wanted. Unsatisfied with the answers he gets, the war mage throws Rinzen's head into the fireplace.

Elsewhere, Constantine is waiting for the results of his machinations. He sits in a bar alone, while staring at an unlit cigarette. The cigarette lits and he knows that the tree root has been burned. Song approaches him from behind. She blames him for getting her men killed. Old Conjob shrugs it off and gives her a bit of his bastard charm. To keep the hurt feelings to a minimum, Constantine gives her a bag filled with money and declares that he's traveling light these days.

Back at Lord Burnham's place, Mako has already devoured Rinzen and is about to interrogate his next victim. The war mage wants to know where the Laughing Magician is hiding. Where the Constant One might be. Burnham misinterprets this and answers that The Constantine is dead. (I'm assuming that he's referring to Constantine's ancestor.)
Mako describes the last place Rinzen saw Constantine, the catacombs during the Joyride arc. Burnham answers in disbelief, stating that John Constantine is a man with no power to speak of. Burnham explains to Mako that he must be referring to Conjob's unborn twin brother that died in the womb. The Golden Child that would have become the greatest magician the world would have ever known. (Continuity? Sweet!)
Mako declares that he will search hell for the child. Burnham says that the Golden Child isn't in hell, that he has searched, and reveals a mirror that is portal to hell itself. Burnham offers Mako unlimited souls to dine on, in return the two form an alliance.

Later on we find John in the morgue looking down at what he presumes to be Mako's charred corpse. Thinking that he got away with it... We see Conjob board a plane on a mission to find out how he got roped into all of this.

This was a pretty entertaining issue for what seemed to be mostly build up. I was surprised how the confrontation between Mako and Lord Burnham turned out. One nasty turn of events indeed. Though I had a kick out of some of the old continuity bits that were referred to in the issue. I'm excited for the next issue already!

A good issue and an entertaining story overall, but it felt more like a transitional arc, setting up the pieces for what's to come. Nice throwbacks to the Delano era, too.

Terrible art from the usually reliable Leonard Manco, though. I understand the scripts were delivered late, but it was still quite disappointing work.

The next story sounds absolutely ace.

The exploding champagne cork trick was worth the price of admission alone.

Nice to see the Golden child mentioned again after all these years. That JC is fooled into thinking Mako is dead was a nice twist.

I was afraid that John's attempt last issue to play his foes off against each other would result in them aligning against him instead, and sure enough... Man, he has got the worst luck sometimes. The Mako/Burham 'odd couple' alliance should prove pretty interesting.

I find it funny that Burnham said John C doesnt have any magic talent at all but he also didnt know he set Mako and him against eachother. If it was only about magic ability the devil or many other demons would killed of JC long time ago.

The booby trap was a creative trap for JC. His tricks never stop to amaze me.

I wonder what Burnham would say about JC's synchronity ability which is spooky and a powerful tool for a guy with no talent in magics ;)

I agree with the art wasnt the best Manco has done but his new player/smooth looking JC looked as awesome as usuall.

I'd actually go so far as to say Diggle's run in general has felt like a transitional arc; it's not bad by any means but it doesn't feel significant or especially compelling. I find myself finishing issues, being mildly satisfied, and then daydreaming about which writer should come next.

I wish Diggle would take a chance and try to make this title his own instead of the Mike Carey clean-up/Delano nostalgia angle he's seems to be going for. He's definitely got a few great Constantine stories in him, I'm sure, but these aren't it.
