View Full Version : Top 5 Images titles of all-time
What are the best series (on-goings or minis) that Image has ever released? Gimme your top 5. If you want also give me your current top 5. This should be fun, as I'm a strictly Marvel and DC guy, although I'm well aware of most stuff Image puts out.

5) StormWatch/Authority - I know that Authority only ever came around when WS was sold to DC, but I still consider it a continuation of my fave WS series, which was StormWatch. Winter, Fuji, HellStrike, Battalion, Diva, Fahrenheit... I loved all of their designs and I'm glad they're all pretty much still around at the moment, despite the various changes done to the series over the years.
4) Youngblood - vol.2/NewMen (Eric Stephenson with Roger Cruz on YB, and Jefft Matsuda, Todd Nauck and Chris Sprouse on NM), both brilliant and sadly unfinished runs
3) The Walking Dead - Kickass main character? Check. Undead zombie hordes? Check. Huge bodycount? Check. This book has a writer and an artist that made me check out a comic that wasn't superhero related, and I love them for it.
2) Invincible - if I can't get my number 1 choice as often as I'd like, I've got it's baby brother to keep me happy in the meantime. This is simply the greatest superhero comic around at the moment, with the exception of...
1) Savage Dragon - I went on about how much I love this series in another thread. Suffice it to say, I'd buy this comic even if I gave up all other comics, it's just that good.

DV8 one of the best series ever by Image.
Gen13 though it's had it's ups & downs it's been pretty consistently good over time.
Spawn the first 100 or so issues before it went downhill fast.
Savage Dragon another consistently good series.
Witchblade again like Spawn the first 70 or 80 issues are good & then it went downhill.

I have had time to rethink the question and now will case a different vote:
(5) Savage Dragon: This book is incredible and it was really one of the first FUN books that I remember being drawn to as a reader. Up to this point I was all about the serious superhero books but when Image came on to the scene the introduction of other characters being more prominant and savage Dragon was right in the mix. I lost touch with the book over the years due to some of the down time between issues but I just feel it has lost a little something over the more recent issues.
(4) Stomwatch: I loved this book, and all of the variations of the book. Stormwatch: Black, Red, or Prime. Volume 1 or Volume 2. Stormwatch: Team Achilles or Stormwatch: PHD - the evolution of characters and concept doesn't stop and although the later Stormwatch and even The Authority were not Image this is where it all started. Ellis's run on Stormwatch was as created as anything out there ever.
(3) Invincible: To me this book is everything that Savage Dragon could have been and just fell a little short. It is fun, witty and there are so many things going on at one time you can never be at bored for even a second. This book for me is Savage Dragon to the next level.
(2) Spawn: I will always have a soft place in my heart for this book and maybe my ranking is a little too high but this comic and I have grown up together and neither of us a even close to what we use to be 14 years ago.
(1) Hellspawn: Bendis and Wood were amazing and this series run of 16 issues was incredbily too short. This books was like nothing else at the time and really is stunning when you go back and look at it several years later. Todd messed this one up by letting Bendis go because he wanted to work on Ultimate Spiderman...

Of the Image titles I've read, my favorites have been Astro City, Leave It To Chance and Alan Moore's run on Wildcats. There's certainly more good stuff out there, and one of these days I'll get around to getting the Walking Dead trades.

I realise you know I'm biased towards SD, but to me it's the other way around. SAVAGE DRAGON is what INVINCIBLE wants to be when it grows up.
I love them both, though!

Actually it was your Stormwatch comments that made me put a little more thought into my list... then again that forced me to bump The Nightly News off the list right before Hickman goes and posts in the forum. Looks like I might be shut out of his Image forum :o

All-time, I'll say:
1. Astro City
2. Bone
3. Alan Moore's Supreme
4. The Maxx
5. Bendis' Sam & Twitch
Though if I had to go with books that were ONLY published by Image, I'd have to have a much different list.

4. Aria - astonishing
5. Maxx - art blew me away

1) Powers
2) Astro City
3) Invincible
4) Noble Causes
5) Dynamo 5, Stormwatch and Ultra [3-way TIE]
I would put The Authority in the list, except I don think it was ever at Image. I get confused by how some comics have moved publishers etc. So, my apologies. Also, I'm really torn on whether Invincible or Noble Causes is #3. They keep flipping back and forth. I eventually dropped Noble Causes to #4 because I hate the new Frost and Rusty re-designs. They should call them Freak and Brainiac now. :)

At least the first couple of issues of Alan Moore's Supreme were at Image, but more of them probably came after the split to Awesome. So, maybe that's not fair for me to count it as a "favorite Image series." But at least part of it came out from Image.

Invincible - Best teen superhero i have read, even better than early's Spidey at best.
Walking Dead
The Darkness
Fell
WildC.A.T.s - only cause of Alan Moore issues which made it much more interesting, more adult and not only generic superhero of the early 90's.
I like vol 2,vol 3 more overall cause of the different writers, artist specially Sean Philips,Casey,Charest but they are DC comics.

Surprised that Dynamo 5 doesn't have more love. One of my newest favorite reads. At times, I find it more enjoyable than Invincible.

DV8 one of the best series ever by Image.
You're the second person thus far to list DV8. I have issue #1 and 2 of that series- I didn't care for it. What made it so great? If it really was that awesome, I might be tempted to collect some more issues and give it a read.
Note that I am not a fan of Ramos's art on this series.

Here's my list in no particular
Savage Dragon. This book was the original "quality" book at Image. Spawn had the best artwork and an original concept, but the story dragged (at the time) and it was late. Dragon, on the other hand, had solid, creative storytelling, surprises galore, hundreds of cool looking characters, main characters died all the time (at any time), and a genuine feeling of unpredictability.
The Maxx. When Image released its Darker Image line, Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld used murder (Deathblow and Bloodwulf) to make their characters "dark". Sam Kieth chose to focus on a topic far more daring: rape. Through creative metaphors and his amazing artwork, The Maxx explored issues of power dynamics interacting between the sexes. It was the one book truly deserving the "dark" title.
Casanova. I wish this book could be made into a movie, as the comic requires an intelligent reader to fully appreciate it. A movie would dumb it down for everyone- and I truly wish that everyone could read and appreciate Matt Fraction's work the way I do. Anything cool that one can say or do in a comic book is done and said in Casanova. If this book was a movie, it would be one of those cult movies (like Pulp Fiction) where fans are constantly quoting the dialogs. I haven't even mentioned the fantastic work done by Ba and Moon- both incredible artists who are able to make such a dense story possible in the limited space they have to work.
Invincible.. This book was released during a time when all superheros were dark and gritty. Kirkman decided to break that mold and told a classic superhero tale with a up-beat slant. And then 10 issues into an already good series, things became serious, and the book because insanely good.
Fell.
Warren Ellis pioneered the Slim Line format and uses the dense format as part of his storytelling technique. Ben Templesmith's atmospheric artwork shines in a setting where mood prevails annd details must be kept to a minimum. This book is a great example of writing and art blending together seamlessly.
Note that I did not include Bone on this list (one of my favorite comics of all time) since I consider it to be a Cartoon Books title, despite the 30 or so issues that were released by Image.
The Joker

Spawn
Walking Dead
Savage Dragon
Gen 13
Witchblade
And honorable mention goes to The Maxx.
