View Full Version : Draw Europe!

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s66/dentalboy/EU_flag.jpg

In view of the recent successful designing superheroes for the 50 states of USA and the ever approaching Eurovision song contest (for anyone outside Europe who doesn't know what this is see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision), I thought it would be fun to do a similar design exercise if you like for drawing a superhero for each of the countries in Europe. Since the boundaries of Europe can be hard to place I've decided to make it limited to the EU.

Each country may only be chosen once. Each EU country has been randomly assigned a number between (1) and (27). Choose your country by posting your pick of a number between (1) and (27), then the EU country they've picked will be added to the list below. Numbers may be picked only once, on a first come, first served basis.

You must then create and design a superhero native to and representative of your given country of the EU. You should include a short description of how and why your Superhero represents the European country you are given as well as a backstory and list of power/skills etc.

If more than 27 people want to join in then I will make more countries available that are within the European continent but not the EU itself.

Happy drawing!

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h125/Baqula/Espresso.gif

Antonio Esposito
While studying with a friend in the biochemistry lab Antonio had a fresh brewed espresso, in stead of adding creme he accidentally poured in a chemical solution into his demi tas. The reaction with the espresso was subtle and it didn't add a noticeable flavor, but when he drank it, it altered his molecular structure giving the gift of high energy and super speed. All he wanted was a little pick me up, what he serves now is a double shot of justice.
He is ESPRESSO!!!

Culture Shock/Inspiration
Well i saw what country I was assigned and began sketching bad stereotypes, while I was drinking a cup of coffee, leaving a coffee stain on my sketch paper, and my brain said, hey Espresso is an Italian coffee, I did a search on it and one site said espresso was the lifeblood of Italy. I equated the extra energy the caffeine gives you with speed and bam. I said this can work. So I gave him a modified track suit with the colors of the Italian flag, and Stylish shades. The Suit is custom tailored by Armani, the shoes are prada.

Enjoy.

ARMADA

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r147/marvelboy1977/Armada.jpg

BACKSTORYThe year is 2045 and traditional bullfighting has been outlawed for nearly ten years. Who would have thought that the replacement for this sport would be terrifyingly barbaric? Spain has introduced gladiatorial combat, and anyone is welcome to come and have a go… if they think they’re hard enough. Meet Javier Hernandez- down on his luck, skint and desperate. He has no hope in the ring… or has he? Armed with his electro-charger and a suit of antique armour, he’s certainly going to give it his best shot!

POWERS
He has none! His electro-charger makes a decent weapon though- it can electrocute, stab or slash. His armour offers him little to no protection really- it’s antique!

INSPIRATION
I took the look of conquistador armour for the main part of the design. The Spanish flag is obviously the inspiration for his yellow crotch detail and he carries the electro-charger which is an attempt to emulate bulls horns. It was nearly called the electro-horn, but really, this isn’t Sex and the City.

MAGYAR
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u285/mikeybumchin/New%20Artwork/magyar4.jpg

Background: After the cold war ended Hungary decided to make it's own super soldiers, using inspiration from their country. Matthias Corvinus was selected to become MAGYAR, and was fitted with a multi-occilating arm weapon.

Powers: none but the weapon arm can be configured to suit almost any situation.

Inspiration: Well his the torso section of his top is the hungarian Coat of Arms, minus the crown that sits above the green section of the coat of arms. The sleeves are based on the hungarian flag, and the trousers and boots are just normal army clothing.
The weapon, and this is really stupid, was inspired by the fact that when looking on wikipeadia i discovered a famous hungarian was Ernő Rubik, who, obviously invented the Rubik's cube.

And the name MAGYAR is what hungarians refer to themselves.

Here's my contribution. I got Greece.

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s66/dentalboy/greece.jpg

Callidora Nanopoulos- Olymptress

Backstory
Callidora Nanopoulos (Calli for short) was an engineer working for a telecommunications company in Athens. Whilst repairing a machine in her basement lab she heard a distant voice calling out her name. Drawn to the voice, Calli found herself stood in front of the statue of Hephaestus which she had been given as a gift from her dearly departed father. Was it her mind playing tricks or was the statue itself talking to her?
Hephaestus explained to Callidora that the world had lost sight of the basic virtues in life and were leaning towards vices of the modern day. He asked for Calli’s help in resolving this matter and with her acceptance he bestowed upon her the tools she needed to do this.
Callidora Nanopoulos became the Olymptress!

Powers/Weapons
Calli has the strength and agility of an Olympic athlete but no superpowers other than this.
To aid her in her fight, the Olymptress has a spear and her five throwing rings. Each of the five rings represent one of the six basic virtues of philosophy
• Wisdom and knowledge
• Courage
• Love
• Justice
• Hope

Calli herself represents the sixth virtue of temperance and mercy.

Inspiration
My obvious inspiration was Greek Mythology.
I chose Hephaestus to give Calli powers as he is the God of technology, artists, metals etc and I thought he was relevant today as we are very technologically minded and I also thought he was one of the least used of the twelve Olympians.
The 5 rings come from the Olympic Games which originated in Greece and I choose to make them represent virtues of philosophy as these would be a good basis for a superhero but also fall in line with the Olympic values etc.
The name Callidora is Greek for gift of beauty and I hoped to make her as beautiful as a Greek Goddess.
Her costume uses colours from the Greek flag and is inspired by ancient greek dresses but with a modern twist of trousers underneath.

Just a quick glimpse through its rich history is enough to give inspiration to create dozens of superheroes
Maybe you can have an immortal "captain Thracian", who was alive when the romans hadn´t even thought of building Rome..

Or you can play with bulgarian words and creeate a
лекарка Ogan - Doctor Fire! (лекарка is the word for "female doctor" and I have NO idea of how to pronounce it :D)

Heck, a quick glimpse through its geography and you have another batch.

MUSALA: coolossal hero that embodies the essence of the Musala Peak

ISKAR - water-powered nymph of the river Iskar

etc, etc.

Thanks! This was a help. I've only read the Wikipedia entry and was stumbling around with a half-baked Spartacus idea, but I'm really tired of doing characters with ties to history of late, and Spartacus's greatest moments weren't really in Bulgaria so there's only a cursery association. Your water nymph idea sounds interesting though. Hmm.

Sorin Sandu

Origin
Sorin is the product of a secret Romanian government experimentation program. The purpose for this program was to create super beings to combat the ever growing prescense of visitors from other planets, dimensions, etc.. They speacialize in human super gene manipulation. . Between the experiments and his own abilities the government had created the perfect protector for their people. So the Defender was born.

Abilities
Sorin's natural abilities consist of flight, super strength, and mild invulnerability. Normal weapons can not penetrate his skin but he can still feel pain(it doesn't feel good to be shot ).
Abilities gained from government experimentation: able to absorb the abilities and life force from superhuman and human alike. he has to make contact with the skin and it only last for 30 minutes. He can also heal himself with the life force taken, if he takes to much he can kill.

Costume
The Defender bares the Romanian coat of arms on his bullet, knife, sword, etc... proof vest. His cape consists of the colors of the Romanian flag. The rest of the uniform is made out of a durable experimental fabric made by the government.

Bare with me people I'm not a writer:rolleyes:

Seamrog
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/heileh/raulin%20taiteilut/seamrog.jpg
Name:
Seamrog is an Irish word meaning little clover and derivates to shamrock.

Back-story:
She is the daughter of the Irish goddess Brigit (the goddess of fertility, therapy, metalworking, and poetic inspiration) and Danish Viking King who made an agreement with Brigit to have a divine child with his blood for letting Brian Boru banish the Vikings from Ireland in year 1014. With human blood in her the child only got the singing voice of the sirens and immortality.

Powers:
The singing voice of sirens which she uses to charm her enemies under spells accompany with her golden harp. The Harp is present from the god Dagda (he's the God of Life and Death, War, Banquets and Magic. And Leader of TUATHA-DE-DANANN the race of magical Irish Gods born of the Mother Goddess Danu. ) and it can produce a melody so poignant, it would make her audience weep, an air so jubilant it would make everyone smile, or a sound so tranquil, it would lull all who listened to sleep.
Immortality.

Other:
She is also the guardian of leprechauns and great friend of Irish beer which does get her in trouble sometimes . Obviously she has updated her costume to meet 21st century.

Inspiration:
I red some Irish mythology and History for this. Costume colors from flag.

I just found this thread. I'm very disappointed in myself.... :(

Anywho, I'd like to join! Can I have #26?

And here's an entry from last CBRunway season. I had Italy for a challenge and here's who I came up with:

La Bell'Italia

http://fc07.deviantart.com/fs13/f/2007/106/a/f/La_Bell__Italia_by_jelloconcoction.jpg

History
During Mussolini's Fascist reign, breeding camps where established in Italy. In one of these camps, a child was born with unique genetic material. She was a mutant, the first of her kind in Italy. Only a few years later, Mussolini was arrested, and his breeding camps dismantled. The child was found by a Giorgio Moretti. He took the child home to his family and they named her Alessa. Here Alessa was nurtured and loved, and by the time she was 12 she began displaying her mutant abilities. Believing their daughter to be a gift, the Moretti brough Alessa to the Italian government. Alessa was studied, trained, and taught for several years. Finally, at the age of 22, Alessa was accepted as Italy's national defender. Taking the name La Bell'Italia (or the beautiful Italy), Alessa began her career protected her beloved country.

Abilities

As a mutant, Alessa has several superhuman abilities:
-Regressed aging
-High Durability
-Flight
-Tactile Telekinesis (allowing for partial superstrength and superspeed)

Costume

Due to her regressed aging, Alessa has kept her youthful appearance her entire life, appearing to only be in her mid-20's. Because of this, and living in Milan (the fashion capital of the world), she has been obsessed with fashion. This has led her to be inspired by the most famous Italian fashion designers to appeal to them for a collaborative costume.

-Shirt
*Made by Prada

-Pants and Belt
*Made by Gucci

-Boots
*Made by Prada

-Cape
*Made by Armani

-Gloves
*Made by Valentino

-Glasses
*Made by Armani
*Allow for infravision/nightvision

-Make-up
*Made by Avon

Costume is highly durable for the sole reason that it does not tear or shred, exposing Alessa inappropriately.
Costume is also highly flexible, allowing Alessa to maneuver herself in complex movements without risk of tear or discomfort.

Inspiration

When I began my designs for La Bell'Italia, I felt fashion was an important part of Italy, especially since the Italian city of Milan is the fashion capital of the world. I implemented pieces inspired from various famous designers (as credited in the costume description) so that her costume would be tied to the country by more than just the flag.

The color scheme is obviously due to the Italian flag. I created a striping pattern similar to the flag, as well as made the cape resemble the actual flag itself. The black "piping" or accents are merely to add a more costumed look to the design, somewhat reminiscent of Captain Britain's current costume.

Powers: above human strength, immune to fire, limited flight.

Inspiration: Pryderi is the story of a baby who was covered in animal blood to make it look like he had died. The top is the St Davids Cross, and the bottoms are the Welsh flag. His arm is now completely in the form of the dragon and his left eye is now changing.

Background: Sarah Tudor, was only a young girl when she vanished from her parents sight in the Cornish town of Perthleven, she ultimately fell into Loe pool and drowned. This was not the end of Sarah as she was brought back to life by the Arthurian nymph known as the Lady of the lake. The nymph bestowed Sarah with wrist armour that would allow her great power.

Powers: Control over water, and anything living in it, can control people by taking control of the water in their body, is able to swim and breath underwater and was above human strength.

Inspiration: was reading english mythology and decided a new twist on the Arthur legend would be good idea. The name Pelleas comes from a knight of the round table who the lady of the lake took as a lover, she was also known to give out magical items, excalibur and a ring given to lancelot.
Uniform is the St Georges cross

Background: During the Slaughter of 38 McDonald clan in Glencoe in 1692 Douglas Campbell was among the more savage members of his clan. The Celtic god of war named Lugh punished Douglas by giving him immortality but allowing him to age at a slower rate. If Douglas does not earn back the respect of the McDonald clan by the year 3000 then he will be sent back in time to relive the slaughter once more, living in an eternal cycle.

Powers: eternal life, healing, carries a bagpipe converted into a flamethrower.

Inspiration: The Campbells vs McDonalds story is true so just came up with a wierd idea. The uniform is the St Andrew Flag, which is the national flag of Scotland. dont know where i came up with the bagpipe flamethrower.

The final member is named.... Cu Chulainn [Coo-chew-lane]

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u285/mikeybumchin/New%20Artwork/CuChulainn2.jpg

Year later after he parents had died Orla found herself on the streets stealing for food. Orla wandered into a churchyard and was set upon by a gang. During the struggle Orla manifested her power increasing in size to Amazonian proportions she reached out and ripped a spear from a statue unaware that it was a holy relic. The local preist saw what had happened and told her the story of Cu Chulainn the last man to be killed by the spear, the priest let her keep the spear as he thought she as destined for great things.

Powers: Enhanced strength and size changing ability. Spear emits a blinding light known as the "hero light" that temporarily blinds anyone who is evil.

Codename: Suoma Ilmarinen
Real name: Suoma
Country: Finland
Age: aprox 2,000
Height: 1,95 meters
Weight: 200 kilos
Powers: class 80 strenght, mach 5.5 (electromagnetic) flight, personal electromagnetic forcefield, ability to absorb and emit electrical blasts. Suoma can boost her superconductive brain performance for a short period of time, allowing her to acchieve 2-minute bursts of superspeed and perform feats such as running at 800 km/h or dodging multiple machinegun fire at close range.

Origin: A bride of gold forged by the legendary immortal craftsman Seppo Ilmarinen to replace his murdered wife, Suoma was repudiated by him due to her cold, hard metalic touch, unaware that the golem was actualy inhabited by a shard of the soul of his departed wife.
Calling herself Suoma, she traveled the world for centuries looking with no success for ways to get a human body.
Returned to Finland after the Cold War, she eventualy adopted the name of her creator and was recruited into the country´s superhero program where, due to her expertise on numerous fields gathered over the centuries, quickly rose in the ranks of the European Community´s Rapid Response Task Force.
Although not as gifted as her immortal creator Seppo Ilmarinen (who could build anything), Suoma´s craftmanship allowed her to perfect her magical body of gold and incorporate next generation technology that allows her to face the threats of the XXI century.

Weaknesses: Suoma is secretly consumed by the desire to have a warm human body

---------------------------------------------------Extract from the Poems of Kalevala-------------------------

ILMARINEN'S GOLD AND SILVER BRIDE
Craftsman Ilmarinen wept
Every evening for his woman,
Weeping sleepless through the nights
And fasting through the days;
In the early hours complaining,
Every morning sighing for her,
Lamenting for his lovely lost one,
For his dear one in the grave.
For a month he swung no hammer,
Did not touch the copper handle, 10
And the clinking forge was silent.

13 Said the craftsman Ilmarinen:
"I, poor fellow, do not know
How to live or how survive;
Sitting up or lying down
Nights are long and time is tedious.
I am troubled, low in spirit.

19 "Lonely are the nights now, lonely
And the mornings dreary, dreary.
In my sleeping I am troubled, 20
But the waking is the saddest.
It's not for evening that I'm lonely,
Not for morning that I'm dreary,
Not for olden times lamenting,
But I'm lonely for my loved one,
Dreary for the missing of her,
Lamenting for my dark-browed lovely.

29 "Often in these days it happens,
Happens in my midnight dreaming
That I stretch my hand out touching, 30
Touching something that is nothing,
Some impalpable revival,
Odd illusion of her loins."

35 For a time he lives on wifeless,
Growing old without a woman.
After mourning two months, three months,
On the fourth he went to work.
From the sea he gathered gold,
From the billows gathered silver
And collected stacks of firewood, 40
Thirty sledge loads altogether;
Burned the firewood down to charcoal,
With the charcoal fueled his furnace.

45 Then he took those golden coins
And he chose those silver pieces,
Just the weight of autumn ewe
Or the heft of winter hare.
Put the silver and the gold
Into the furnace of his smithy;
Set the slaves to fan the fire 50
And the hirelings pumping on.

53 So the slaves then worked the bellows
With the hirelings pumping on,
With no mittens on their hands
And stripped naked to the waist,
While smith Ilmarinen himself
Was attending to the forging,
Trying to form a golden image,
To create a silver bride.

61 But the slaves are not performing 60
And the hirelings not producing.
So smith Ilmari himself
Now began to work the bellows.
He pumped once, he pumped twice;
After pumping for the third time
He looked down into his furnace,
Peering down beside the bellows-
What was coming from the forge,
What emerging from the fireplace?

71 From the forge a ewe is thrusting, 70
Forced out by the blowing bellows,
One hair gold, one hair copper
And each third one made of silver.
Others are well pleased with that,
But smith Ilmari himself
Is not pleased at all and says:

77 "You are what the wolf was wanting.
I myself am hoping for a
Golden sweetheart, bride of silver."
81 Then he shoved it in the fire, so
Added gold and added silver;
Set the slaves to work the bellows
With the hirelings pumping on.

87 So the slaves then worked the bellows
With the hirelings pumping on,
With no mittens on their hands
And stripped naked to their waist,
While smith Ilmarinen himself
Was attending to the forging,
Trying to form a golden image, 90
To create a silver bride.

95 But the slaves are not performing
And the hirelings not producing.
So smith Ilmari himself
Now began to work the bellows.
He pumped once, he pumped twice;
After pumping for the third time
He looked down into his furnace,
Peering down beside the bellows -
What was coming from the forge, 100
What emerging from the fireplace?

105 From the forge a colt was thrusting,
Forced out by the blowing bellows,
Mane of gold and head of silver,
While its hoofs were all of copper.
Others were well-pleased with it,
But smith Ilmari himself
Is not pleased at all and says:
111 "You are what the wolf was wanting.
I myself am hoping for a 110
Golden sweetheart, bride of silver."

115 Then he shoved it in the fire,
Added gold and added silver,
Set the slaves to work the bellows
With the hirelings pumping on.

121 So the slaves then worked the bellows
With the hirelings pumping on,
With no mittens on their hands
And stripped naked to the waist,
While smith Ilmarinen himself 120
Was attending to the forging,
Trying to form a golden image,
To create a silver bride.

129 But the slaves are not performing
And the hirelings not producing.
So smith Ilmari himself
Now began to work the bellows.
He pumped once, he pumped twice;
After pumping for the third time
He looked down into his furnace, 130
Peering down beside the bellows-
What was coming from the forge,
What emerging from the fireplace?

139 From the forge a girl is thmsting,
Girl with gold braids from the bellows,
Silver head with golden hair-
And a form so beautiful!
Others are frightened by the figure,
But the craftsman is not frightened.

145 Then he hammered without ceasing 140
To create the golden image,
Working all night without resting,
All the daytime without pausing;
Legs and arms he fashioned for her-
But the legs, they cannot walk,
And the hands cannot caress him.

153 Then the ears he molded for her-
But the ears, they do not hear him.
When he made a sweet mouth for her
It could speak no welcome to him; 150
When he made those bright eyes for her
They could not look sweetly at him.
159 Looking at her he considered:
"That would be one lovely girl
If she only could converse,
Had a mind, a speaking tongue."

163 But he took her to the tent bed
Underneath a gauzy netting,
Set her on the downy pillows
In the silken bridal bed. 160
167 Then he heated up the sauna,
Made it hot and vaporous,
Prepared the soap and leafy slappers,
Carried in three tubs of water
For the washing of the chaffinch,
For the cleansing of the bunting
From the gold dust of his labor.

175 There he bathed himself with pleasure,
Splashing to his satisfaction.
Then he stretched out by his bride 170
Within a sheer mosquito net,
Underneath a steely tent
Supported by an iron framework.
l8l On that first night, Ilmarinen
Feels the cold and wants more covers,
So he gets himself more covers,
Puts on two or three more bearskins,
Five or six more woolen blankets
To warm himself beside his wife,
By the side of that gold image. 180

189 Now, his side against the blankets-
That was warm enough for comfort,
But the side against the maiden,
Toward his precious golden image -
That was cold and freezing with hoarfrost
And was freezing into sea ice,
Stiffening into stony hardness.
197 Said the craftsman Ilmarinen:
"This is not so good for me;
I will take it to Vainola, 190
Take it to old Vainamoinen
As an ever faithful helpmate,
As a birdie for his bosom.

203 So he took it to him there.
"Here, old Vainamoinen," he said.
"Here's a virgin made for you,
Beautiful for you to look at -
And she is no big mouth either,
No chin-wagging chatterbox."
211 Old reliable Vainamoinen 200
Took but one look at the figure,
Cast a glance upon the gold:
"Why did you bring that to me,
That queer looking lump of gold?"
217 "For your good," said Ilmarinen,
"As an ever faithful helpmate,
As a birdie for your bosom."

221 Said old Vainamoinen shrugging:
"O you smith, my little brother!
Shove your girl into the fire. 210
Forge it into useful tools
Or then take it off to Russia
Or send it into Germany
For the rich to haggle over
Or great warriors to fight for.
It would not befit my kindred
And it would not suit me either
To go courting after gold
Or go chasing after silver."

233 Then he cautioned and he warned them, 220
He, the man of Quiet Water,
Now forbade the younger people,
All the growing generation
To debase themselves for gold
Or to scrape and fawn for silver,
And he said it in these words,
Pronounced it in these sentences:
"You poor boys, you growing men,
Whether you are rich or poor
Do not ever, ever at all 230
While the golden moonlight glimmers,
Ever woo a woman of gold
Or succumb to lures of silver.
'Frozen is the gleam of gold,
Icy is the shine of silver.'"

That is awesome Zeu... very nice reference- very cool cape design too. My brain just couldn't get into this one. I may retool the Thracian sketch later but I'm just really having problems fitting a Bulgarian hero into the context of superheroes as I know them to be - and not understanding an iota of Bulgarian cultural or political nuance is hurting me too. I mean, I read some references, but nothing modern could click for me. Maybe after I visit there or see Greece something more will click.

Don´t feel bad, prior to this thread I could barely find Finland on the map!!
If anything, this thread taught me that there are no small countries out there, every nation has its rich past just waiting to be discovered.
Bulgaria, too. :)

For me it was a great exercise because I got to learn more about Finland, its geography, people, culture and history.
I´m no expert on all things Suomi, but at least now I know a little more about it than a few weeks ago.
This thread really inspired me,my goal now is to dedicate a week to each country in the world, learn where it is and gain a general overview about its people and history.

Next stop: Bangladesh.

I had like 5 - 7 ideas for oher heroes but had to scrape them because I wasn´t sure if their name translations were grammatically correct.

One of the runner-ups was "Taiga Queen", which I was calling Taiga Daami / Taiga Kuningatar.

Yep, I am finnish.

Taiga Kuningatar would also have been a great name. Taika spelled with k means magic. Taiga with g (besides that it means boreal forest  ) sounds lapplandish pronouncing of taika.

I LOVE that..

Maybe I should revisit the charater :)

HISTORY
Friedrich Pfalzgraf was a descendant of King Rupert of Germany and the Electors Palatine, The Electoral Palatinate was a historical territory of the Holy Roman Empire. Its rulers served as prince-electors of the Holy Roman Empire from 1356.

Beginning in the early 1930s, Friedrich, a local political figure in Heidelberg, began speaking out publicly against Hitler's Nazi party. Regularly threatened by Hitler loyalists, Friedrich arranged safe passage for his wife, Margarete, and infant son, Louis, to England as refugees with a promise to follow. On November 9, 1938, the "Night of Broken Glass", Pfalzgraf learned that the Nazis would begin deporting Jews to concentration camps the next day, and warned many families, but hundreds of local Jews were still captured. Devastated, Pfalzgraf left the area and began working against the Nazis covertly, using the codename "der Schwarze Adler", or "The Black Eagle".

Pfalzgraf continued his crusade against Hitler during the early months of World Ward II but disappeared sometime during 1941. While a body was never identified, it's presumed that he was killed during the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union.

Ever hopeful that Friedrich was still alive and would one day return, Margarete and her son returned to Heildelberg in 1947. Margarete had told Louis that his father was simply a soldier. Louis, now 17, enrolled in the University of Heidelberg where he excelled at science, law and political science. There he met and fell in love with Hannah Bancroft, a political theory student. It was during this time that Louis uncovered his mothers letters from his father, learning of his actions against the Nazis.

Upon graduating in 1953, Louis became a professional Nazi hunter, helping to hunt down and try many of Hitler's top aides. In 1960 Louis married Hannah, to Margarete's delight. In 1962 their son, Philip, was born.

Margarete passed away peacefully in 1982. Louis retired from Nazi hunting in 1990. By then Philip himself had become a respected political figure, and an opponent of the burgeoning neo-Nazi movement. Philip's new wife, Rachel, a Jewish descendant of a Holocaust survival, bore a son, Stefan, that same year.

In 1996, Philip and Rachel were murdered while in Munich by neo-Nazis. The traumatized Stefan was taken in by his grandfather, Louis, who taught Stefan the family's legacy. Inspired by his great-grandfather's selflessness, Stefan trained his mind and body, with the help of Louis, to carry on his sires' work. Stefan currently attends the University of Heidelberg by day, and hunts neo-Nazis, skinheads, and other criminals by night...as the costumed der Schwarze Adler.

COSTUME
Designed and constructed with the help of his grandfather, Stefan's costume is made of a lightweight Kevlar mesh that he reinforces with a lightweight bullet-proof vest underneath. The colors and name are representative of the banners of the Holy Roman Emperor, used in the 14th century by his ancestor, Rupert.

The cape is made using locking fibers which, in addition to acting as a shield of sorts, allows the wearer to glide for short distances.

The gloves and boots are tipped with steel talons used to slash opponents.

Matt, that's awesome. My fav so far. Questions, does he have additional gadgetry? Did the original Black Eagle work in costume? at what age did the new black eagle first don his outfit?

It seems you took a smilar route to myself, I also designed a non-powered revenge-based vigilante, birthed in the blood of an oppressive regime during the mid-century and a modern day counterpart. I should have him up shortly.

His great-grandfather did not wear a costume; he just carried a pistol. Stefan first donned his costume just before going to university. He'd been training for a couple years prior, under the tutelage of his grandfather. Just to be clear, while athletic he's nowhere near the fighting prowess or capabilities of characters like Batman. His training really doesn't exceed what a normal person could attain. The costume, though, is obviously meant to instill fear.

Lithuania's KARYS 13 (Warrior 13) is the last surviving subject of the KGB's Enhanced Human Project.

Originally programmed to be a near mindless human equivalent of a WMD, Karys was released from cybernetic subjugation after the fall of the Soviet Union.

He has no memory of his life prior to entering the program which, among other things, seems to have enhanced his natural cryokinetic abilities to near god-like proportion. Far beyond the ability to generate cold or use ambient moisture to create various weapons of ice, Karys 13 can remove all motion/friction from any molecules in his line of sight.

This allows him to reduce the temperature of any object to absolute zero, creating alternately super hard constructs out of "thin air" or reducing normally impenetrable objects to something as brittle as glass.

Karys' skin is blue, diamond hard and cold to the touch. He is a top level hand-to-hand fighter and his enhanced physique allows him to lift about half a ton without effort. He is unaffected by most temperature extremes but, of course, requires SOME ambient moisture to operate at peak.

This is actually a good exercise. I could write a pretty good series off this guy. And there's a massive twist to his story that came to me last night. I love the idea of "World Heroes" and generally haven't liked the ones the mainstream companies have come up with.

Cultural and Historical Background
Estonia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estonia) is located west of Russia and south of Finland. For the majority of the twentieth century, the area was under either Nazi or Soviet rule. In designing a truly "Estonian" hero, I thought it'd be best if I went with a character with a strong sense of national pride, being openly opposed to foreign control.

Early Childhood
The character that I came up with, Paavo Suvari, was born in the late 1920s to a relatively poor Estonian woman that lived in the city of Narva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narva) on the border of Russia. His father died during a military excursion prior to Paavo's birth. Lacking a male role model, young Paavo was strongly attached to his mother, who would often entertain her son with traditional Estonian folk tales as well as overly exaggerated accounts of his father's life. Paavo took to one tale very heavily, that of the Kalevide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalevipoeg), the national epic hero of Estonia.

The Epic
The tale of the Kalevide originated from the same oral tradition as the Finnish epic that Eliseu pulled his character from. The hero of the Finnish epic's name was Kaleva, a great King of the Eastern Baltic region that both Finland and Estonia are part of. In the Estonian version, Kaleva was simply called Kalev. The hero of the Estonian epic was the youngest son of Kalev, Sohni, later to be called Kalevipoeg or Kalevide, both meaning "son of Kalev". Much like Paavo, the Kalevide was born after his own father's death. The Kalevide was a fierce and intelligent warrior that was trained by a hedgehog to battle using stones and the thin edges of planks.

The Tragedy
On June 14th, 1940, Paavo's mother boarded a small transport plane in Tallinn, the capitol of Estonia. Paavo, in his preteen years, was still uncomfortable being away from his mother for an extended period of time. To soothe his fears, his mother told him that the spirit of Kalev would surely protect her, as the plane was named after him, Kaleva. Unfortunately, The Kaleva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaleva_(airplane)) was shot down from its flight by two Soviet bombers in the first act of aggression towards Estonia from the Soviet Union. All nine passengers died. The full-scale occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union occurred two days afterwards.

Upon hearing of his mother's death, coupled with the dramatic experience of being alone at such a young age in the capitol city during the invasion, Paavo vowed to spend the rest of his days fighting Soviet rule. Not trusting anyone, especially Soviet education and government officials, the next few years were spent homeless on the streets of Tallinn. It was during this time that Paavo began to obtain his physical prowess and fighting skills.

The Hero
As he got older, he started to break into the houses and offices of Soviet workers to steal food, money, clothing, and other goods. On one of his excursions he was spotted by a high-ranking soviet official that demanded to know who he was. Thinking back to the tragedy of his mother, Paavo's only answer was to say, "The Son of Kalev" before he escaped. After seeing the harsh way in which soviet soldiers would treat native Estonians, it did not take long for Paavo to decide to start fighting for more than his own survival. As a young man, Paavo designed a costume that would invoke a feeling a patriotism amongst his fellow Estonians, and began his single handed war against the Soviet Union.

The Costume
The one displayed in the image would be intended for winter use, especially in Eastern Estonia, where the climate is more harsh. He would have had a lighter weight outfit for warmer environments.

The colors chosen are those of the Estonian flag: blue, white, and black. The mask/helmet, cape, gloves, and boots are all made of a soft and pliable goat's leather stained blue with the use of cornflowers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornflower), the national flower of Estonia. The vest is a double-breasted design and sports an external belt, both of which are elements that would have been inspired by pictures of Paavo's father from his military days which would have been similar to this (http://www.rearaccount.com/crap/estoniansoldiers.jpg) and this (http://www.rearaccount.com/crap/estonianbelt.jpg), both dated to the 1930s.

The area around his eyes would be rubbed over with a black substance, such as motor-oil, grease, or shoe-polish, to not only further his disguise, but also to absorb sunlight and reduce sun and snow-glare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_black). The motif displayed by the dark areas around the eyes, along with the nose guard and orange crest on his mask are intended to resemble the look of the barn swallow (http://www.rearaccount.com/crap/barnswallow.jpg), Estonia's national bird. This look is also enhanced by two slits in his cape that rise to roughly waist level. When leaping or squatting, this would cause his cape to separate at the ends resembling the feathers of a bird's tail.

The Satchel
The inside of the satchel would consist of complex pouches, flaps, and fastens to hold the contents in place. Those contents would vary depending on what goods he had previously pilfered from soviet workers, but would almost always include:

a length of rope, weighted on one end for climbing
some carabiners (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carabiners)
a pair of field binoculars
a compass
a multipurpose knife
water-resistant matches
assorted field medical supplies
a flask of vodka
usually a handful of stones

The Character
He is a skilled self-taught combatant, but has no formal or worldly education (think more Wildcat, less Batman). He is more than competent, but by no means wins his fights flawlessly. He is very resourceful of his surroundings during combat, and would often play off the "fights with stones and planks" aspect of his namesake whenever he could. He has no secret identity, and works from a number of abandoned warehouses and factories across Estonia 24/7 to put as many kinks in the Soviet machine as possible. When not in uniform, he considers himself "undercover" researching for his mission.

The character ages normally, and is active up through his sixties, with his last spotted appearance in uniform shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. However, as the years would pass, his lack of social interaction, as well as the frustration of being one man against the whole Soviet Union, would affect him mentally, making him quite eccentric. This, along with the fact that he would often go multiple continuous nights without sleep, completely absorbed by whatever anti-soviet project he was working on, would make him a little "street-crazy". (This aspect of the character, non-existent at first, would have increased along with his age, and in his later active years, he would be written like a mix between Adam West Batman and Frank Miller Batman.)

The Design
I made him short and stout in stature, maybe 5'6". His name, Paavo, even means "small or humble". I found this a fun spin on the character, as the original Kalevide and Kalev were both giants. He has light blue eyes, blonde hair, fair skin, wide facial features, and broad cheekbones: all genetic traits relative to the Eastern Baltic region. His costume is somewhat inspired by Paul Pope's Batman (Batman Year 100) as well as Bryan Hitch's World War II era Captain America (The Ultimates). If he were to be portrayed in film, my first choice for an actor would be Nick Nolte.

I have a modern-day counterpart that I'm working for the character that I might post later. If anyone notices any glaring mistakes in my research, do correct me.

WHOA!

Great work, Manon, I love the character!!

The design is sweet, but I also like the extensive work you did on his background.

I especialy like the fact that he ages, he feels human and vulnerable and probably not "all there" due to all the years fighting soviet rule.

I´d love to see him teaming up with my Suoma for some crimefighting, for some reason his humanity would be the perfect foil to her. .

France has SO! Much! Potential!

You can go ancient Rome and pick Vercingétorix or early christianity and pick Charlesmagne, you can go medieval and pick Joan d´Arc and her "voices", you can pick "night dweller" Eugene Vidocq (guy who inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to create his Sherlock Holmes), you can go early XX century and pick Saint Exupéry (aviator who wrote the Little Prince), you can go Maquis and pick the WWII resistance heroes, you can go social-conscious and work the "Pieds Noirs" (slang for argelian newcomers in the 60s), you can go XXI century and work the fact that France has only ninety bilion nuclear plants...

the only problem with France is that it´s hard to pick one..

Agreed. And don't overlook modern times either. The Pompidou is the hub for presenting modern art- plus you have the Louvre and Musee D'Orsay just a stone's throw away. There are TONS of visual landmarks that could have characters tied to them. (Eiffal Tower, Notre Dame, Arc D'Triumphe, the Lascaux Cave, ect.)
Also, what is going on politically there now is pretty interesting- what with their immigration problems and shift from a liberal government to a more conservative leader. They have riots from time to time, so a Gangbuster type hero could be cool.

I wish I could have gotten France. :frown:

Seamrog
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/heileh/raulin%20taiteilut/seamrog.jpg

Thats awesome man!!!! I'm from Ireland and you've made us proud!!!

I finally got around to drawing Luxembourg. I used my original design, that was supposed to just be a joke, but I liked it a lot.

http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs30/f/2008/150/d/5/Enivre_ivre__Luxembourg_by_jelloconcoction.jpg

So, while reading up on Luxembourg, I found out that it is the country with the highest alcohol consumption per capita. I think it was somewhere near 12 gallons of alcohol a year per person. So, I went that route.

My Luxembourg hero, Enivré ivre (The Inebriated Drunk), is a man who is nearly always intoxicated. He is connected to each and every person in his homeland, and when they drink, he is affected. Hence constant drunkenness. When drunk, he also becomes quite large and immovable, a la the Blob.

Since he's usually unable to move in his drunken stupor, he is transported by the government by plane and then pushed out over enemy bases and such.

I know France is working on theirs. Is anyone on the list completely MIA, though? If so, we might want to consider having other people sign up for their countries. I'm eager to see the full roster.

Also, Luxembourg was awesome. My mind's eye view of him is great.

I dunno, I too am really eager to see the final roster but I can understand how some folks may have a lot of things in their hands that take priority over this.

I think the last thing we want is to start issuing deadlines since it would hurt the key aspect of this thing: the fun. :)

But if there´s anyone in a creative block, just say the word, I´m sure that there´s plenty of guys willing and eager to give a hand.

She is Marianne, a national emblem of France summoned into human form by the ailing French people during the disastrous Pan-Atlantic War of 2014.

She can have any ability needed to complete the task at hand, provided that there are enough believing French people who can "fuel/strengthen" those abilities.

awww shucks... eliseu sir...ur just saying that. hehehe. i want marianne to do everything that a super hero can...she's technically a god but then again...i had to give her limits. the "getting the strength from your country or land has been done" so i thought of having her abilities directly connected to the french people. the more people believing in her the stronger the ability....

thank you eliseu sir

really? hihihihi...i never did like putting all 3 colors on her costume. it's too cliche. so i made her a red-head....and that's gonna be the red part...the blue her armor...the white the non-armor part.

thanks Lew!!!!

That's rad, it's kind of like Marvel's Gladiator. He can do anything he believes he can, she can do anything as long as enough French believe that she can. It seems like it could be a fun thing in the hands of a good writer.

So, while reading up on Luxembourg, I found out that it is the country with the highest alcohol consumption per capita. I think it was somewhere near 12 gallons of alcohol a year per person.A gallon a month? That's only like a quart every week.

Finally got my character for Belgium finished. Introducing De rode Papaver

http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s201/tylerragan/PapaverRhoeas.jpg

De rode Papaver translates to the Red Poppy, popularized by the poem "In Flanders Fields" written in World War1. The poppies referred to in the poem grew in profusion in Flanders where war casualties had been buried and thus became a symbol of Remembrance Day (Canada's holiday dedicated to its veterens).

De rode Papaver main ability is biological telekinesis. This allows her to manipulate and control organisms in various ways. She can enhance healing of damaged tissue and broken bones. She can also control the actions of others, and is capable of moving/levitating them. This also allows herself to fly.

That is a great concept, Escape Goat, I like her potential in particular. A talented writer could do tons of stuff with a character with her powers. :)
LOL
You´re probably gonna hate me, but my first reflex when I read her description was:"- Whew! Thank god my heroine is not made of organic matter."

I´m starting to like the numbers of characters finished a whole better now.
17 finished, 10 more to go.

Well, I was given Sweden, so I give you Stockholm Syndrome!

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i1/e1heffe/StockholmSyndrome.jpg

I kinda envisioned him as a cross between Captain America and Mr. Incredible.
The coat of arms on Syndrome's chest is Sweden's national emblem.

I really like the designee but the name is just wrong, no respectable Swedish superhero would call himself that. A better name would be Tre Kronor (Three Crowns) or the Swedish Sentinel.
