Looks good... as Zombie said...
but the original lines do more for the shading than your coloring job...
Next time... take a drawing that just has the most basic stuff... no shading... and color that... it will help you to get the shading right.
Oh... and another thing... if you are using PS... use screen/multiply instead of dodge/burn.
I do not mean to offend you with anything in this post.

On the green one, yes.

Wow, this is just screaming "portfolio" man! I hope you have some older versions of these pics to compare to, they're wonderful!
Robert, you're stuff's looking better and better. Now some wizenly advice who sees someone making the same mistakes he did as a youth: Don't ignore your backgrounds. The paper towel dispenser has a totally different perspective than the counter. I know this is just a fun sketch, but if you choose to draw a background, put as much thought into it as you do the figure.
Nice to see the growth.

Actually, now that you mention it...yep.
Remember that "hellboy vs tentacle monster" picture i posted last month? Of course you don't. I started to color it (finally). I'm such a slow, lazy person when it comes to colors, so I'm not sure if I'll finish it.

I like the drawing of your girlfriend, but I'm sort of sad to see some of the lines of your original HB vs. tentacled monster obscured by the colour (yes I do remember this drawing from the old board). Anyway you can do more colouring *behind* the lines and-- to echo what ICBM said above-- let the lines carry more of the form.

I wish I knew how to color behind the lines in Paint Shop Pro, I've only seen instructions for coloring like that for Photoshop.

Hey Robert, just read your post in the Wolfgang thread so thought I'd come and take a look.
I love the style you have got, very free and fluuid. The one crit I have for my own work is that I over draw things and can't do the 'free' thing.
As for yours, the only crit I have is that your anatomy needs some work. The easiest way round it is practice. Either study skeletons and muscles then build your figures or just get a catalogue and draw from there.
Good stuff tho' dude

Because I don't have any proper inking pens (i usually use sharpies, but last time I used one, the tip exploded and ruined a perfectly good drawing).
Plus, the "undo" function is helpful! :D

I think your color work would look better if it was a rough as your line work. The line work you have combined with a smooth polished looking photoshop color makes it seem dijointed, like either the drawing is done poorly or the coloring was done quickly.
If you have photoshop 7, there are some REALLY cool brushes that you can use (without even using a wicom tablet) that can look like different hand done textures, like marker or paint.
I think embracing the look of your style will really make your work soar
Petersen
06-21-2004, 11:48 AM
I'm at work, where I only have photoshop5 loaded, so no special brushes.
I shook the mouse as I burned and dodged the color (especialy in the red)
and the web is an bevel/emboss effect
icbm1987
06-21-2004, 12:02 PM
Wait... what brushes are you talking about?
and I think Rob has PSP... not PS.
icbm1987
Petersen
06-21-2004, 12:06 PM
In PS7 there are all kinds of different shaped brushes that have LOTS of controls, jitter, noise, opacity, angle, spacing, etc. they do a fair about of dynamic effects too, blending between forground & background colors as you paint, etc.
I havn't use PSP, but from what I hear you can get very painterly effects there as well
E. Spears
06-21-2004, 01:12 PM
Whoa. Thank you Petersen! I love what you did with the colors.
Your tips are wonderful, too. I'll try to make my stuff more cohesive in the future.

Not sure what sharpies are, being from Australia, but assuming they're felt tip pens? That's what I use anyway - I don't have proper inking pens because I'm a) not a professional, and b) don't know where to get them. I always get a bit of technofear trying to ink or color a drawing on the computer if it started in reality.
Oh yeah, nice quote on the sig too, Robert! That movie's damn funny.
E. Spears
06-21-2004, 09:59 PM
Yeah, they are permanent felt-tipped markers. I guess I pressed too hard on the tip, 'cuz it just started oozing, then it went splat all over my drawing. It didn't even make much sense--I had never heard of a sharpie exploding before!
You like Cold Comfort Farm, too? Awesome! One of my favorite movies.
I'll have more stuff to share soon, but I'm too tired to scan and fix them right now.

That sucks, I've never heard of them exploding either. Maybe yours was possessed by a squid, which thought it was under attack.

A trick is to light box your original on to a new sheet and just do inks on the new sheet. Screw it up? who cares, still got the original.
Dont have a light box you say? Well you can use a window on a sunny day or your monitor open to word (a blank word document is the quickest way I have found to make your screen almost entirely white)
you can also use various roller ball pens instead of the dipping kind to achive thin lines.
icbm1987
06-22-2004, 07:01 AM
Oooh... Petersen's giving tips...
A monitor? Interesting... but isn't it kinda hard to ink on a surface that is perpendicular to the ground? 0_o?
Roller Ball pens? Like what kind? The BIC mass produced ones? Or actual good ones?
icbm1987
Petersen
06-22-2004, 07:24 AM
It is tought at first. You can also take a mechanical pencil (to insure a tight line) and lightly transfer the image while it's on your vertical monitor or window, and then ink when flat (that is how I did the Mouse and Cardinal book & Transfer many sketches on to watercolor paper for my paintings)
I really like Sanford's Uniball Vision waterproof/fadeproof pens. I don't know how archival they are, but if your end goal is to scan and color, it shouldn't matter much.
icbm1987
06-22-2004, 07:42 AM
Yeah... the uniball vision's are good... they don't smear like the pilot pens... I'll have to check that out.

I don't quite get how the top 2 panels connect to the bottom 2.
icbm1987
Hard to comment when we don't know the story yet. If the inset is the hand of the zombie that gets blown away, it's misplaced. It should be to the left. If it's a fantasy that an artist is having as his work is being criticized, you need some parallel staging.
Either way, I think you've cheated us on the money shot of the attacking zombie. That panel should be much bigger.
Sort of like a puzzle, interested to see the dialogue.

Hey, I wasn't far off. I don't mean blood and guts, I mean the zombies are the supernatural element and we only see the back of one and a hand. Page through the Goon for proper zombie display techniques. "Vile" seems out of place with everything else. Yeah, he's play acting, poorly, but the point of your gag is the Canadian-speak.
But if the Goon can be a badass with his accent, I think a Canadian version of him would do fine.

This looks pretty cool and pretty impressive for a mouse. It's good to see a drawing from you without all the multiple lines. You should be confident when using a pencil and find the single line that can define a form. This piece shows you've got the goods!

the 1st of the span drawings is good. I like how almost not drawing his hand in among the green 'power' you gave it more umpf!
Mignola does a lot of drawing by only focusing on the negative space and letting that define the positive form

I did a doodle for a painting I'm going to begin tomorrow in class. The theme I was given for the painting was "geometric shapes in cool colors".
I call it: Doritos in Blue!

Are they for class or just something you're doing for your own interest?
I'm a teacher's aide in a sculpture class (I'm doing that for a second year now). I've always liked doing wire sculptures, ever since I was in seventh grade (man, that was a long time ago!). When the sculpture class does their thing, I sometimes do what they are doing. Not usually, as I don't like getting my hands messy.
And thanks! Glad you nerds liked 'em. :D.

And it rocked so hard.
The mogwai were okay, and I missed the Scarling set, but everyone else was SOOO GOOD.
Head Automatica was great. Their bassist is the most animated fellow I've ever seen.
The Rapture was great. The guy with the cowbell was wearing humorous short-shorts, which were blue.
The Cooper Temple Clause was great. Their lead singer had a sweet beard.
Cursive was great. In so many ways. And thier lead singer has a sweet beard, too.
Interpol was great, as well. They seriously sounded just like Joy Division, but with a singer that's alive. It was funny, too, because after they finished the second song, the lead singer just said "F*ckin' Sh*t!" and then they kept playing.
The Cure was the best thing ever. EVER EVER. I had seen live performances on DVD, but to actually be there was amazing. Damn. I want to go back there right now.
I saw it on Friday at the Home Depot Center with one of my friends. We didn't take any pictures, but I did document a lot of our adventures in the form of several 10 second doodles. I'll share them soon, iffn anyone's interested.
That was my first ever concert, BTW. And I'm going to follow it up with a Blood Brothers/Against Me show in October with the same friend and a couple others, and I'll share the happenings on that at some point :D.
