Here's a funny tought bout the whole "fuck you whale" piece ( I LOVE IT BTW!!) The "wale family" sound exactly the same as "to jerk off" in Polish! a reason for hour of laughting when I was in secondary shool...

Morna--thanks :).

Khan--haha, I was not aware. thanks!

so finals week is killing me. I officially hate entomology, if only because of the massive amounts of shit to study. and Art Theory, despite it being my favorite class, is goddamn retarded because all the theorists we study make shit that's not fucking complicated into shit that is way complicated and dumb-sounding.

Like "what is a cyborg? blah blah blah, some shit about coyotes, also DuChamp again" FUCK YOU DONNA HARRAWAY, YOU DON'T MAKE SENSE.

gehh. more art later, assuming finals week isn't the end of me.

Hey buddy! I was just wondering where you'd gotten to! I really really like the snake one! And the car/landscape with the visor but your friend in the mirror looks like an afterthought (maybe she is) though it may just be that she didn't get ink... or am I reading too much into it!

;)

uh... did I mention that I love the snake one?

Morna--thanks mucho! I think you might be reading into the one with Katrina a bit too much, I just liked the looseness of the pencils to still be in the image ;). Katrina was no afterthought, she was supposed to be there in the first place.

Sparky--thank you, glad you like the monkey. The group of drunken art majors I was hanging out with when I did it liked it a lot, too :).

more stuff eventually...

Seriously, you should be at the indy tables at SDCC. Next year for sure. Maybe you can hook up with a buddy who's inspired by your images then feeds a story back to you.

My only suggestion is to keep the story real, about what your life feels like, no matter how fantastic the images. Great, great stuff and the smoking monkey could be a t-shirt.

You mentioned school and I was wondering if you could share any of the work you have done for class assignments.

Thanks gary! glad you like the feets and the expanded version, but I think the composition was stronger when it was just a bust. I think I'm going to salvage the body for something else in the future, but it wasn't really helping the image.

haha, uncle festor rules! i forgot about him :)

I have some paintings from my painting class, I'll try to take pictures of thems to share. they're all just real quick studies of still lifes.

Sweetcore bunch of drawings, The Cure.

There's a strength and consistent quality to all of these new pics. I really like the underwater drawings and some of the adult material. Moving away from solid black and white is a good move for the way you draw. There is good energy in the way you fill in dark areas and I like your use of grey marker in the most recent ones.

I have been missing out on this thread!

This is really good, I love the arms, the depth and the movement:

This is pretty interesting. You've got a good handle on hands:

But this just rocks my socks:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/myimagehost/girlcigarette063006.jpg

Channel more of whatever energy that came from!!! The pose, the gaze, the narrative are really strong. This is brush pen on paper, right? Not digital?

The last couple of images you just posted are really engaging too, but I like the clean, direct style of the stuff I just mentioned (and you did say you took more time with these. That time paid off).

Are you familiar with Philip Guston (http://www.sfmoma.org/exhibitions/exhib_detail.asp?id=88)? Your painted digital stuff like the Hellboy you did on the ArtPad thread really remind me of his work. He was featured in an essay in the McSweeney's comic book issue, which seems quite appropriate. Check him out!!

Ruta--thanks a lot! glad you like the brush-pen stuff. It's interesting that you like the girl with the knife so much, I got a comment on deviantart saying it was the best drawing in my gallery. And I actually am somewhat familiar with Guston, we watched a video about him on the last day of my painting class, I really enjoyed his work. It's awesome stuff.

i need to get some more drawings done, haven't worked on anything since comiccon. probably this weekend.

ERS:
The color on 'I want more drugs' is really nice! very subtle. I didn't expect this from you.

And the woman in grass is a great composition. have you ever tried uploading these as threadless designs or opening a cafe press store? I know you said earlier you didn't want to do comics (are you still doing the sketchbook of the paneled non-sequitur images???) Your designs/drawings would make killer tees!

Thanks a lot, Petersen! When I did that I was trying to use stuff I learned and tried in the painting class I took last quarter.

I've thought about doing something for theadless. My friend Jake and I always talk about doing t-shirt stuff on cafepress, too. It could happen. I'm still doing the sketchbook with all the pages, I just don't know when yet. probably next summer. maybe.

Seems like most of your imagery wants to tell a story. It may not be some grand tale of intrigue, romance, epic battles, or triumph and torment...but it says more than what is presented at the moment in the image.

cool info about this one--

The caption is the title of the opening song on the self-titled album by the band Jesus Makes the Shotgun Sound of Riverside, CA (where I go to school).

I put it on MySpace, and the band (JMTSS) saw it and liked it (they've already expressed some admiration for my stuff), and asked me to do some art for their next album. I'm real pumped.

here's their band's myspace. Their new stuff is pretty sweet, it's real mellow and atmospheric mostly. the album they have released currently is kind of like a mix of Norma Jean's album Bless the Martyr, Kiss the Child and Converge's album You Fail Me. pretty cool stuff.

The piece that you cut down for your avatar is fantastic! Are you doing any paintings on canvas yet? I could see you playing around with oils with great effect. Or encaustic, with an underpainting of black and then you cut a drawing into the wax to reveal the black underneath.

absenter - thank you very much! I appreciate the encouragment, and I'm glad you see improvement--usually I'm too close to the work to really see if I'm getting better.

I haven't updated in forever because I haven't been drawing, actually. Been really busy with school and during xmas break I was, more often than not, in a chemically-induced state of being that was not conducive to drawing anything worthwhile.

In all the not-practicing, my inking skills (the little I had that worked for what I was doing) went out the window, my hands are too shakey to keep a straight line, and all of a sudden, the paper I've always bought has started to let my pens (admittedly sharpies and brushpens) bleed all over, which hasn't happened before. Bleargh.

Since inking is, at the moment, out of the question, here's a few digital pieces that I recently.

My brain has recently imploded upon itself from consuming an exorbitant amount of illicit materials.

Dude, careful with that stuff...fry your brain and you'll end up as an insurance-claims processor somewhere in Poughkeepsie, drinking bad coffee at your desk in a strip-mall storefront with beige carpet and fake ficus trees and one of those "Hang In There, Baby, Friday's Comin!" kitten posters on the wall. The fluorescent overhead lighting will flicker and buzz intermittently all day long. Bzzz. Bzzz. Bzzz. You'll sit there listening to "lite-rock" radio and scribbling in the margins of the Yellow Pages with a chewed-up Bic pen, but all you'll be able to draw is Garfield and Kilroy. Bzzzz. Bzzz. Bzzzz. Every once in awhile the secretary will find you hiding behind the water cooler, chewing on your tie and having psychedelic flashbacks. Don't let this happen to you!

That last pic you posted is great -- looks like he's limbo-ing under death. Ooh, DEATH LIMBO...now there's a band name.

Whoa man, you're talent is getting so hot--don't wreck it!

Your self-portrait is fantastic. The inking is really tight. It has been neat to see that skill evolve. The colouring on the lightbulb guy is great except for those red and green rectangles. I don't think they add anything and the green especially kinda kills the palette. However the colouring on Death Limbo is tasty. I love the composition too.

I have to echo the sentiment of both how your work has gotten better with almost each post, and concern over the drug use.

Sparky - Thanks. For the record, I will never be stuck listening to lite-rock radio. Death metal for life! PS the "Hellboard" shirt you made last summer is one of my favorite shirts still :)

Maija - Thank you! I'm not entirely sold on the colored rectangles in the lightbulb-head self portrait, either. I'm really happy wiht the way 'death limbo' (as yous guys've decided to call it ;)) turned out, too.

Howy - Thank you kindly.

Petersen - Thanks much! Actually I feel more in control of how my artwork turns out than I ever have in the past, colors and all. The painting class from last spring really really helped me with that.

I appreciate the concern about my silly drug habits, but nobody needs to be worried, for reals. I have grades to keep up, and that is my number one priority, so I never let my weekends get in the way of what I have to do.

Thanks once again everyone, and I'll try to scan my photographs from class soon.

I've been on more drugs than a East Hastings prostitute.
5 years straight of poly-toxicomania
I'm not using drugs anymore because I simply lost interest and I can't afford it anyways.

Plus, most ppl on drugs are annoying. It seems so silly today to think I use to waste my time that way.

Then again, if I hadn't...I would not be the person I am today. I love myself today. It's definitely opened doors to me. (I'm not talking about flaky hippy spiritualist crap.)

I don't tell most people because it makes them react and in turn makes me uncomfortable...especially when they are being caring but to me it seems a little none of their business or even condescending sometimes.

I'm lucky because I never had a severe addiction
But most of all, thank god I was also high on art all that time.

One thing for sure, sucks for your health.

sorry, I shouldn't talk bout that stuff in your art thread. just giving you a different perspective. :)

E. Spears
02-23-2007, 03:19 PM
6are54 - I don't mind. I appreciate the perspective. I haven't taken anything like the stuff you mentioned before your post-edit, though. You must've been out of your mind in those days ;). Heh.

For reals, nobody needs to be concerned. I was joking more than anything my post on the last page. I'm no dummy, I don't do (terribly) stupid things.

I would have photographs scanned, but I had to turn all of them in yesterday to the teacher to have them graded in whatever way he intends to go about doing that. Instead, I have a drawing (doodle?) I did.

These are all great. I think I like the top one the most. Light-bulb-head-guy is a favourite recurring image you use. Plus there's tentacles, a monkey, "the Trudeau salute" and lots of ink. If you ever make a sketchbook I want one.

Well, there's no denying that you have something here. Unique your vision may be, but it still crackles and demands attention. What's interesting to me is seeing your style (somewhat akin to Craig Thompson me thinks) with little nibbles of Mignola and even Guy Davis showing up here and there. I suppose one way or another artists are always going to reflect their influences, regardless of how subtle that reveal may be.

Thanks much, Francesco.

Sorry, no real updates for the moment, I've got a few things halfway done but nothing complete. School's nearly out, which means every teacher watns to give us lots of work. yay.

I got some sweet news last week, though. Back in February I submitted almost twenty things to UCR's annual art and literature publication Mosaic, hoping that maybe one of them would see print.

Last week I got a letter that I won the Mosaic Award for Art, which makes me awesome. Eventually they'll send me 150 bucks. I'm getting two pieces printed, which makes me the only art-submitter that's getting more than one piece published this year. So yeah, I'm awesome.

These are the pieces that are getting published:

This second one is the piece that got me the award:

So give me a high five.

Also, you rock.

I don't have anything new to share yet. I'm finally on summer break, so I've been sleeping, and doing little else. I'd forgotten how hot it gets in the desert, but I'll take the dry heat over the humidity in Riverside any day.

I only get another week off before I get shipped to Fresno for a two week course on making comic books (did you catch that, Petersen and Tad and Maija and anyone else who's been buggin' me about comics? I'm making comics this summer). I get three units of general-ed credits for it, and at the end of the two weeks there's an exhibition of all the students' work. I'm kind of excited, but I'm a bit put-off by the six-day-a-week schedule and the 9am-7pm classes. :/

It'll be an adventure, either way.

That course sounds great (except for the schedule)! For art-snob points you should refuse to use the word "comics" and substitute "sequential art" whenever the opportunity presents itself.

ok...

I haven't had a chance to set up my scanner and scan the pages I did for the class, but I'll get 'em up soon. Promise. The course was awesome, by the way. Spain Rodriguez and Trina Robbins were our instructors, and a couple other cool people showed up and lectured, including Terry Zwigoff (director of Crumb and Ghost World).

At this point, I'm back to school in Riverside. The first week of summer school just finished, which makes me happy. I might get to go to a party tonight, which makes me more happy. I can't wait for fall classes to start, though - - I have two studio art classes and a couple other classes I could live without, but the art classes are what's to get pumped about. Intermediate painting and intermediate photography, I'm so excited. I'm gonna get my camera to the shop for a tune up to fix a light leak, then practice takin' some photos. I think I'm gonna do color photography, that seems like a good challenge.

While they're not the pages I did at the comic class, I have a couple other things I did after it was over. More of the same, I suppose.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/myimagehost/emilysketch071707.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/myimagehost/emilysketch071707BW.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/myimagehost/sketchpage072007.jpg

That last page closes "The Second Year", the third chapter of the book-of-not-comics. They've kind of organized themselves by years in college, so I can't, in good conscience, start printing them until I'm done with 4 years at UCR. I'd feel like I was jumping the gun. I'll get some other shit printed in the meanwhile, I promise. After the comic book class, I've decided that I really want to do comics again. I just got so pumped up about them.

And I got my copy of Mosaic, the school art and literature mag I got an award for. In the table of contents, they screwed up the name of a piece from "All Systems Say Go" to "All Systems Go", and while they got the title right on the actual page, they cut off the bottom half-inch of the image, removing a bit of my signature and the bottom of the subject's shirt. Grrrr.

Holy shit! I can't believe I totally missed the comics stuff you posted last summer!!! That must have been when I was backpacking. I can't get over how your art has evolved. Wow. Your style reminds me a bit of Dylan Horrocks (http://www.hicksville.co.nz/) yet it's totally your own thing too. Another thing from summer 2007, from the mystery block of time where I wasn't posting. So, I wish I had more new art to post. I've been drawin, even been doing some comics, but my new scanner is having issues. I'm gonna try it on this other computer I have, once I install all the drivers on that one. I wish it was working, it's huge--it can scan up to A3 sized stuff (about 11x17) without a problem. The only things I managed to scan on it before it starting having issues are these pages I've already shown, but this time not looking like crap. Cool, I thought it was blokes with possibly you being one of them and Bill Murray aged 31?!
What I said was just 'kick that bucket' - referring to Photobucket and their no tiny peckers policy. Then I thought the remark could be regarded as not so nice.
Since starting my art thread I'm thinking of shopping for an A3 scanner but I have always thought it'd be above my budget, so I have yet to check one out. Also I'm far from up to speed with all the cool tidbits like a wacom(?), advanced Photoshop and such. (I kinda thought working digital only cool as an extra tool and when its invisible in the result. You do digital do you not? - And I think your lines and panels are sweet so you [may] have opened up new worlds for me!)
Anyway, hope you get your new setup sorted, and the new art as cool as all this already (and indeed nothing looks the least bit gunky in the scans - Mine do when made to fit in a post but I try something Fitzroy(?) said: up the dpi's and downscale the pic).

Couple of things. The first one's a forgotten page from the comic-book-workshop last summer. I'd forgotten about it entirely until I discovered it buried in a big folder of random stuff. The second one's the first page of a thing I'm working on. I'm inking pages 2 and 3 right now, it's going slower than I anticipated. This'll be the thing I put in Sweatshop #4, which is coming along smoothly; the other two people puttin' stuff in it have given me most of the work they want to put in it, so that's sweet. It'll be featuring a few little comics from me, a story with a cliff-hanger ending from my buddy Aaron, and a prose short story that by my buddy Jake, who's also going to Hellebration 2008 with me. Yay!

I might put this in Sweatshop, since it's not seen print before. Nothing legitimizes a publication quite like a poop joke.

Oh okay!
I had a few friends who went to UCR, but I'd never heard of VVC. (Then again, most people have never heard of my undergraduate college).

Taking a break is almost necessary these days. Especially with the work pile that stacks up with classes. Honestly, it's more work than I've ever had in any of my jobs.

Hey, it gives your more time to practice your talent.

Kees--Thanks! Yeah, the "Are You Serious?" one and the beers page were done on paper. The Spawn drawing was done digitally. The high desert is actually my least favorite place in the world, I hate this town so much. I escaped for almost three years, then I got sucked right back in. It's like a fucking curse.

Maria--It does get pretty intense. I don't have much in the way of down-time, though--four days a week I get back home after 9:00pm, and when I'm not working the writing center or in class or doing homework I'm either eating or sleeping. I've gotta work some time at the gym into all this, too. It's probably not a strenuous schedule by any real standards, but after two weeks I'm already exhausted. I'm not pumped that this school works in semester rather than quarters--16 weeks of this sounds like no fun.

Oh woe is me!

I got my first regular gig making comics in my journalism class--they're being printed every two weeks in the school newspaper starting next week. My editor and I created the story and characters, but I'm doing most of the writing and all of the illustrating. I'm pretty excited.

I'll have this finished for reals by Wednesday night--that's when it's due. Deadlines are a drag, but at least they ensure I get something done, right?

Looking sweet. Deadlines are no drag, they rule. Like you said exactly.

Could you maybe draw out (in a sketch or panels) how the high desert sucks for you, for me? I think it might be good, for me, for you, even for this High Desert.
Looking forward to your reply E., kind regards ~ Kees L.

You know what, I might just do that. Just for you. If anyone else asks me to do something like that for them, I'll have to say "hell no, you're not Kees L. Get out." When I get a chance, I'll do a little thing like that. You need to see why it's so shitty.

INKS INKS INKS!

It'll be in color soon (it better be or my editor will have my head!). Get excited?

Holy crap! While I've been missing out on your thread HISTORY has been taking place! Congratulations on the regular gig! Many fine strips have had their beginnings in student newspapers.

Thanks a lot Maija. :)

The colors were published today. My editors don't know how to resize an image to save their lives, so it ended up being squished vertically in print. :( At least you all get to see the real and not messed up version.

I'm currently pencilling episode 2. I've been bugged by editors and readers about the lack of dialogue in the previous one, and my editor said it's not wacky enough, so I guess it'll have dialog and be wackier.

Thanks, Francesco. I was supposed to be drawing episode 2 of Dial M for Ninja. I got it in just in time. It's the comic strip I'm doing for the VVC newspaper. It's pretty silly, I like it a lot. I'll put it up sometime soon.

hey ERS! Good to see new stuff. How's school going.

(me, I'm in a bit of a slump since my show.)

Your ninja panel remends me of a dream I just had - we were on a big boat with trees and plants and archer fish in a barrel and all kinds of species of things and crazy-ass science equipment. We were about to get troubled by pirates ( the modern kind that just look like guys) when I woke up. We were probably going to be OK as we had more guys and the crazy ass science equipment and stuff.

k, see ya

E. Spears
10-29-2008, 03:01 PM
Thanks Morna! School's alright, just so damn slow--I'm not at all used to the semester schedule. I'd we're in week 10 and I'd be effectively done by now if I was still at a school on the quarter system.

That's an intense dream--maybe you need to make a comic out of it!

I just finished the thumbnails of the next three episodes of DMFN. They make up the Space Viking Trilogy. Get pumped?

Thanks, Francesco! I finished the thumbnails for the last three pages a couple days ago and I should have the next page done by the end of this week.

I've been busy with the band I just got into. I'm re-learning how to play saxophone and we have a show this coming Friday! Eek!

The final installment for the Space Vikings Cometh!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/myimagehost/DMFN_5_forweb.png

It looks like I'll have a lot on my plate next semester at VVC. The instructor for Journalism wants to split the publication into a newspaper and a magazine. It looks like I'll be art director for the paper (which means I get the logo I want, fuck yeah) and I'll be a really big part of the magazine. Judith (the teacher) wants DMFN to be in the magazine, which'll be monthly, and it'll be in four page installments. She and the new Editor in Chief want me do to political cartoons twice a week, as well. It's gonna be hairy, and that's just for ONE class!

Congrats man! Your DMFN rocks big-time, which also means you can obviously handle 'deadline delivery', which will be the root for all mag or newspaper publication. So it's nice to hear you're being appreciated.
Also, I can see you pull of great political *gags / gaggings* as well, especially if your educative executives promise it'll be hairy .
(Please remain yourself 'tho amid all this succes , shiny shoes with tassles will look stupid on anyone....)

Gary - Thanks muchly! There might be more of this next semester, it all kinda depends. I might do a comic that I'd enjoy more, because ninjas and pirates are actually a little played-out, even for me. We'll see though---I have a sweet story written involving these characters, so maybe I'll stick with it.

Kees - Thanks. Hopefully I can stick with the deadlines. I'm really excited about being doing the political cartoons, especially given that we're getting a new Editor in Chief, who it just a way cool dude. I'll try to not let it all get to my head, Kees.
