That's pretty cool Robert. I think you could do a series of inanimate objects...like the watch, this lantern, etc.

Mike Davis (who does the wordless comic art) likes drawing things like corkscrew wine bottle openers, eyelash curlers, leatherworking punches, anty object that 'does work'

Awsome, i love the lantern. It's different and..um..i dunno...i just like it. :)

Petersen--thanks! Glad you like it. I'll probably do more stuff like this as it strikes my fancy :D. Do you have a link to that guy's website? I tried finding it, but there's so many mike davises that I couldn't find it. Hurm.

Johann--Thanks a lot :).

Colored the lantern. I think I like it.

Mike doesn't have a website, but I called him and asked for him to scan some examples of those object sketches...he couldn't find all of them but here are some of the eyelash curlers:

I like your groupings of objects robert. You may want to focus on selecting the objects in some way that brings a greater idea to the piece.

This last one the top panel and pocket watch are the most sucessful. The otehrs fall a little flat because of the lack of contrast. I like the drawings of the objects themselves, but either the tone of the object or background needs to change to make them more readable. The meat on hooks is the hardest to see. But I really like the scratch out or whiteout you used to make the tops of the chains fade out...*frosty*

E. Spears
08-01-2005, 05:20 PM
JG!--Thanks a lot, I appreciate it :).

Petersen--Thanks. I have the most fun doing those things. I remember on the first couple filled pages I did that a few people thought there was something sequential, but to me it was just filling the page with lots of drawings. So I thought that I could do a whole book of stuff like that. After I get 20 to 25 of them done, I'm going to collect them and print them as a sketchbook, but the theme to the book is going to be the pages that almost look like sequential art, but when there's nothing sequential about it; each page is going to be its own peice, but all the elements are separated into panels. I like the idea of putting things together that are more related to each other, but then I'm afraid it would end up being actually sequential (which I'm not trying to do). I bet I could do something like that, though, and have it still fit in the book I'm putting together.

I'm going to do actual sequential stuff eventually, but I'm having fun with this fake comic idea I had. I know it's kind of a dumb idea, but I'm enjoying it so far.

All the pictures I drew in the last one were inspired by music I was listening to this morning, and the themes in all the music I was listening to is kind of related to each other; Nine Inch Nails, Lamb Of God, Rage Against The Machine, Bloc Party (to a lesser extent).

Kind of rambling at this point, but whatever.

Petersen
08-01-2005, 08:02 PM
When I said things that relate, I didn't mean they had to be so literal or obvious of conections. It could be a vauge theme like "Things that restrict" "red objects"(when done in b&w the connection more subtle) "things that do work" "items or concepts related to time" "hate" etc.

I like the idea of the sketchbook. and I don't think it's "dumb" at all

Petersen--I see what you're saying. I'm sure I'll do something like that, I've got 25 pages to fill! Glad you think it might be cool.

Morna--Thanks. So far I'm having fun with it.

Another one. When I finished the top right panel, I thought maybe it could be something important with a meaning or something.

Then I said to myself "Think about how sweet dinosaurs are. Hell yeah!"

So it wasn't so meaningful, but whatever :).

I've been wracking my brains to describe how I feel about these new pages and finally came up with "sweetcore". I hope that works for you.

I'm also hoping that the last frame has nothing to do with a certain "Sunshine Band" because they sucked.

ERS,
these are getting better as time goes on. The last two have been very strong. (I thought those mice killed that snake....guess I'd better send them out there again...)

The latest one is great! the piece works as a whole, but that last panel is wonderfuly done. The billowing smoke is believeable and yet very stylized. Nice nice work.

Johann--Thanks, man. Cool that you like it.

TWyrm--Thanks a lot, I appreciate it.

Kid C--Heh, I like drawin' them. Thanks.

Petersen--Glad you think I'm getting better. Sometimes I think I am, other times I think I'm not doing anything new or evolving at all. That last peice is my favorite of the sketchpages, I think.

That last panel was really interesting to draw, glad you guys think it worked out pretty well.

More stuff at some point, maybe later today.

Tad--I'll try. I won't actually have any "making art" assignments for the first quarter or so, I think; I have to take some art theory classes first, they're required for my the studio art major. I think I'll be able to do a drawing or so a week, if I don't get completely swamped :D. And thanks!

Thanks a lot, Johann.

Ozzfest yesterday...holy crap. Best day ever, again.

no camera, but I drew some stuff today.

saw a few guys like this coming out of pits, this guy's kind of an amalgom of the injuries I saw from pits (bruises and cuts and a swollen eye or two). It's always the hardcore pits that mess people up, too.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/myimagehost/goodpit82105.jpg

I hardly ever post unfinished pencils anymore, but that's because I hardly ever scan any pencils anymore. but I liked these and I wanted a record of them before I either make them better or screw them up with ink.

Robert, you're definitely on to something with the brush markers! Both this piece and the "Standing in the tall grass" show a new level of refinement in your work. You accomplish great things when you construct your drawings from single, determined lines rather than a more sketchy approach. Your style benefits much more from a heavier line than in the thin-lined drawings we've seen up to now.

I hope you continue exploring this!

E. Spears
08-26-2005, 12:11 AM
Thanks JT. I'm having fun with the brush marker also, it's good to play with different tools. I'm definitely going to keep messing with it, and I think I'm going to go out and get a real brush-pen, this one's tip isn't as pointy as it was in the first couple drawings (even after a few uses! jeez!).

Here's a couple things from today...not my best but I felt like I needed to do something.

More great art, I like The red and yellow on the skull page and the whole layout on the tree page.
Ers-Since my last post I have used some of that cardboard and I finally got a Scanner!!!!-so i should be able finally get an art thread of my own someday. Unfortunatly, the scanner doesn't work with the piece of crap i'm typing on now. Looks like i gotta wait until my sister gets her Laptop internet ready.

That collage is great. I really like the astronaut too and I like the way you draw girls also.

But that latest monkey kicks ass! The one on red and grey could be an album cover. It's just an awesome piece of design. The off-set grey outline clinches it.

Okay, the gasmask sherriff is freaky, although in a good way.

But those photos, man, what kind of camera did you get? The contrast in the first one with the cranberries draped on the lamp is quite striking. You got excellent contrast, exposure and focus in all of them, even the ones that appear to be taken without a flash.

The mundane, household ceiling fan as a threatening robotic device! Cool.

But the brick wall with the leaves in the gutter is really outstanding. The colour saturation, contrast and composition are all fantastic.

ruta--thanks a lot! I did the one with the cowboy frame after a night of partying. it was good partying. I'm glad you like the photos, I like takin' pitchers. The camera I got is a Cannon Powershot 610 (I think that's the number, I don't have the camera near me, and I'm recovering from another night of partying, so I'm way too lazy to go get it). It's like my other camera, only with more buttons and takes nicer photos. The brick wall's one of my favorites, too, cuz it was taken during...another night of partying. heh.

Rob H--excellent? no way, I'm just starting to figure things out. got a couple lucky shots in is all. Thanks!

Johann--thank ya. I try to keep busy.

Sir Edward--thanks! the singer in the band liked them too, I don't know what the others thought. 'God' one? you mean with the flowers and weirdness? never thought of it as a 'god' pic, it's cool when others tell me what they get out of stuff that I do. I never really have any kind of meaning in mind when I do things, and I just know I'll have to make up some stupid meanings in my art classes.

don't really like either of those drawings. It's always hard for me to start drawing at the beginning of the year, like the start of the new year always throws me into a little drawing funk. blehh.

last night was one of the most intense nights ever. i saw the band COLD WAR (http://myspace.com/coldwar) at a little venue down the street from my school. it was so much heavy. HEAVY. now my neck is sore from all the insane headbanging I was doing and my throat is sore partly because of all the screaming COLD WAR lyrics at the top of my lungs, and because at the party afterwards I spent my time with a kind of sick and very much drunk Christine. Oooops. now I'm sick.

so yeah, that was my update on college life. enjoy the pics, and check out COLD WAR.

The spiked collar, tree, crotch picture is really cool. It might just be because I like tits and crotchs but I think there is more to it.

TWyrm--thanks. Yeah, there's a little bit more behind it, but prolly it's only because I know what's happening there.

Johann--thanks! I think If I hadn't painted the redish stuff around the border area it would've been better, I had a really nice thing with creams and oranges and browns going.

pencils for a new page.

Word on the street is, it's your birthday. So I'll raise a few more in your honour, and by the way, this latest stuff is the shit. You should compile a book of these pieces.

I think that's great!! Some of the latest panel pages are the best work you have done!! This latest one is super cool. The toned color really packs a punch. You are getting a lot of "sexy" in your female shots without being overy graphic or in poor taste..very subtle. good job!

You should compile a book of these pieces.

I hope this is still the plan!!! cause I want a copy!!

yeah... I'm so looking forward to this book, if and when you make it be sure to throw in some unseen stuff, a surprise is always good.

no pressure.. :P

howyadoin--haha, thanks! you can celebrate for me, I've got way too much work to do to party (sadface). I actually do plan to put the sketch pages into a collection, not sure when, but it'll happen.

Petersen--thank you very much. lately I've been drawing what I do almost as it happens, that last page especially. I pencilled most of it at the party, and I was drawing what I was doing and seeing. I try not to be in poor taste, I thought the panty-shot page was maybe pushing it a bit, though.

Johann--there will be some new stuff thrown in there for sure. I'm pumped about it, too.

so yeah. that's that.
