Tad--Thanks, I'm glad you liked the spacegirl :).
Petersen--I see what you're saying about the cattleprod thingy in the gasmask girl picture. I might go back and try to fix that at some point. And thanks, I actually plan on coloring it in the same watercolor-ish style as the last couple color peices.
Johann--Thanks! I actually liked doing the spacegirl so much that I did a companion for her--Space Pig! And another little sketch of another spacegirl.

Piggy has quite a belly. I dig spacegirls retro look( kinda reminds me of Ms. Peel from the avengers) can't wait to see these colored.

Thanks, Yukon. I haven't seen any Avengers episodes, but I think my friend has some of the show on tape.
I tried to color the spacegirl in the same 'watercolor-esque' way as the gasmask girl, but it didn't work. then i tried to mess around with a brush in PSP9 that imitates an oil brush.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/amputee/spacegirlcolorsAsmall.jpg
I don't like it, but it was fun.
Then I looked at almost every picture on Ashley Wood's site (http://ashleywoodartist.com), and I felt like I should mess with the "oil" brush some more. Here's the result of that experiment:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/amputee/charactersketch21405Asmall.jpg
*edit* for both of them I did the coloring under the inks, so it looks kind of weird.

Here's a bunch of new crap. I've hit another drawing rut, I haven't been able to make something decent for a while. Usually a good chat with Claire fixes that, but not this time. These are all pretty uninspired, so veiw with caution.

Thanks a lot, John. I appreciate it.
I was talking with my friend Claire on Yahoo IM, and she made me draw a picture of her for her (made isn't quite the right word, I would've done it anyway). I finished it just a few minutes ago, here it is:

There's still a lot of things that I don't like about it that I'm planning on changing, but it was more fun to do than taking Calculus notes.

I REALLY like this one. I like the layout and design, you seem much more confident with your lines and the color is very complimentary to the stylization.

actually I like it too. When it first came up in its window it was cropped just at the lower curve of the waistband (sure you cut off the words but any idiot would know to click on the flower) - that was an even sweeter composition - but I'm a girl... and an OLD one at that. Probably not your target demographic!

this is a real knockout! great composition! I love the way you utilize the frame in this peice, I think in some of your other drawings the frame is a formality, but in this one its a real part of the subject !The negative space here also isn't just standard it reaally work with the subject. I wish it was a teenie bit wider so that the widest part of her hip just grazed the edge, but that is just a matter of taste. You seem to do really nicely with long vertical formats, you should really check out Japanese prints.http://www.degener.com/lndscp03.htm (not the best example but it will do)
Asian art has a tendancy to use more extreme horizontal and vertical proportions, in comparison to western art. I think you might get alot out of looking at this type of work
awesome job!

Kid C--Yay! Jeremiah! Cool that you've think i've gotten better, and it's really cool to see you posting more :D. Thanks.
JT--wow, I don't think I'm quite at AH!'s level of boob-tastic-osity, but thanks a lot!
Morna--You confuse me very much, but thank you :).
Yukon--Thanks to you, and those are sweet pictures. Thanks for the sweet link, it's got a ton of really great stuff.
Johann--Thanks. I was actually thinking of redoing the drawing itself, the line in the middle of her stomach got read as a lightning-bolt tatoo by a lot of people. But I'm afraid that it would lose the same feeling as this one, it wouldn't have the same energy (my redraws never do).
Thanks again for all the comments, I can't say how much I appreciate them. Every comment helps me.
Since Howie (one of the guys who does WASD stuff) decided to just put the picture up as-is, I probaly won't worry about a redraw just yet.
No pictures today, probably new ones in a few days.

I like the cropping on the detail version better than the whole composition. Very cool heads. They would make awesome sculptures.

Jan--Thanks a lot! Watercolor pencils are sweet, they're like colored pencils that act kind of like watercolors when you apply water with a brush. i like using them a lot.
Hellsaint--Thank you :D.
Petersen--haha, thanks. Yeah, the composition is kind of iffy on the whole peice. I never thought of making sculptures of the heads, that might be pretty sweet! I'll have to steal some clay when I'm TAing in Sculpture next time :D.

03-06-2005, 10:47 PM
I think you're getting close on the colouring.
I agree with Petersen, the painting you posted is best in the cropped close-up. I've noted this before in the paintings you've posted-- the way you choose to crop the photographs often makes for a more interesting composition than the original painting. In general (though not always) I find compositions that have the subject partly out of the frame are more interesting-- keeps you guessing about what you can't see. When you're sketching up a subject for a painting, play around with framing it simply by laying four sheets of paper over the edges to see what different cropping gives you.
You've done this brilliantly with many of the sketches you've posted, like the girl's torso with the flower tattoo.

Petersen--Thanks a lot, especially for the color tips. Coloring's always been hard for me.
Sir Edward--hah, thanks! I'm glad yous guys liked the tentacle :D.
Johann--Thank you! I appreciate it.
Ruta--Thanks for the help. Yeah, the cropped image is more interesting than the rest of it as a whole. I'll try 'cropping' the original sketch before I paint it on one of my next ones.

I think you generaly make good color choices! sometimes it's more the value range. A hint is to change it to grayscale and see if the elements still pop from one another, that will tell you about your values and contrast.
This last one is great. I like the background color, the yellow-green highlight on the shirt, the skin tones...for someone who is unsure of your coloring, you did a great job. the only crit I have is that there could be a slight bit more contrast in the leaves to seperate them from the background. Perhaps more orange, or daker...but it's 99% there!

These look great colored! I'm impressed with your skill with digital coloring, are you doing all of this in photoshop? I love the fact that you leave the edges ( in this case the black edge) raw and wobbly and then drop the whole piece in a perfect rectangular form. It reafirm the touch of the piece. I also dig the noise you leave in the blacks ( by not exactly filling it in solid ) for the same reason. MORE!
E. Spears
03-12-2005, 10:04 PM
Petersen--Thanks a lot! Cool that you think i'm on track with coloring :). I didn't think about looking at a greyscaled version to check contrast, that's a good idea! i'll do that on future coloring projects for sure.
Yukon--thank you! yeah, i'm doing all the color on the computer, Paint Shop Pro 9. I don't have photoshop, I used it in my Yearbook class and I couldn't figure it out for the life of me.
I got the first two volumes of Sin City earlier this week, and I read 'em both fast. Holy shit, best stuff ever. I showed to my friends, and they loved it. My friend Mikey wants to grow up to be Marv.

The first Batman sketch is great. I like the simplicity of it.
I think a lack of simplicity is what's hurting the coloured drawing. I like the Batman part of it. I think the HB part of it would be improved by limiting the colour range, ie. one shade of red and one shade of brown and letting the black do the shadow work. I would take the green lights off of the Batnoculars™ and make the charm a soft yellow colour so that the green glow of the charm becomes a single focus.

Sweet job Robert.
I thought you would like Miller.

hope you don't mind...
Great energy on Marv!

Wow, Petersen. That's really great. You're absolutely right about commiting to my blacks, it really helps the picture. And the gradient really helps, it breaks up that giant block of yellow perfectly. And the purpley tone you gave it is sweet.

I realized that after i posted that comment, although i was lazy and did not edit and just figured it could be read as: asking for color or asking if you'll color. meh, It looks good, i didn't even notice the mistake. :p
color wise-its not about the amount of black but more that there is no need for color, if that makes any sense. If you imagine it with color it just wouldn't seem right, the single figure would look kinda out-of-place in tecnicolor. i dunno, don't mess with it.

I understand what you're sayin', Johann. Word up.
Yesterday was sweet, I went on a ten-mile hike with a bunch of my friends. Now, I've never been one for hikes, but I figured that a ten-mile hike wasn't going to be very hard.
But Damn, it was hard.
By the end of it, I could barely move my legs. And I was fairly dehydrated, according to Mountain Man Jesse, my buddy that organized the hike. It was sweet.
We had lots of obstacles, like calling that Jake had to carry a giant peice of metal and cement as far as he could on the hike, and splinter-celling our way past a little camper that was probably the home of some deranged person with a meth lab and a shotgun (splinter-celling quickly turned into sprinting the hell out of there). And there was some ass with a shotgun shooting targets on his house, but he was a complete idiot; he was wearing camoflage, presumably so the targets on his house couldn't see him . And we had to climb lots of fences, and then we had to make our way under a bridge, which was fun, and we almost had to fend off some dogs, but they ended up being nice doggies. And i rolled in this giant plastic pipe for a while while some other guys pushed it, that was sweet.
Today my legs are so sore, but that only means that I'm going to have super-buff legs. So I'm okay with that.
I'll try to have some more art today, but I'm probably going to the gym to get super-buff.

Thanks, Johann. Glad you liked the pictures. Yeah, the monster is kind of silly, but I bet you don't want to have one of them in your pool :D.
This last week Claire's friends Phoebe and Liisa came down from Washington to visit. We hung out, and it was sweet. They left for home early this morning (which sucks hard), but not after having one of the most fun nights ever last night. We went driving in the desert, listened to David Bowie, and had a real good time. They're some of the coolest people I've ever met, and I wish I could go and visit them right now.
I did a quick drawing of Phoebe the phoetus, and there's a picture of Liisa coming soon (hopefully, if I can figure out how to draw her).

had another desert adventure last night. me and a few friends got a little lost in the desert behind my friend's house, he lives in the middle of nowhere, so it's kind of easy to get lost. We went to jack-in-the-box when we finally found a road, and it was good. We also went to a 7 Eleven to get some other stuff, but then we had to go back to another adventure. and it was a good adventure again.
Enjoy, more stuff to come soon (i hope; i go back to school tomorrow, yarrrgh!)

Today my legs are so sore, but that only means that I'm going to have super-buff legs. So I'm okay with that.
I'll try to have some more art today, but I'm probably going to the gym to get super-buff.
HA!
Oh man, that cracked me up! (I'm not supposed to be lookin' at this stuff in class, so I got a couple of looks. 1st day of this new class, so it's nice to give everyone the impression that I'm a total dork!)
I really miss having adventures like that. Hell, an adventure of any kind would be very welcome these days.
Hey Robert, if you'd still like to do a trade for the Loligo "foamy", I'd glady make you one for a copy of that gasmask/spear-dude in the snow. Glad to see you're staying busy. Will you be able to keep it up with school comin' back around?
And hey, if you ever come up to Washington to see your friends, we should kick it!

Art trade--dude, sweet. You're gettin' that one for sure dude :). I feel like I need to add something else to that man, name it you got it. And a PM comin your way.

hahahaha, that got a laugh outa me, i take it the gorilla and the knight are school mascots of sorts(i recall them in you're other school projects) and the zombie-guy...just sure randomness.- too cool.

Kid C--Thanks a lot, yo.
I'll try to have some stuff to share today, but I've got some calc to study and some anatomy to catch up on.
oh SHIT, I went to a LAMB OF GOD concert yesterday. It was at the Glasshouse in Pomona, it was so amazing. The ENTIRE FLOOR was one huge circle pit, it was sweet. It was my first time pitting anywhere, it was ridiculously fun. I fell down a couple times, got in a fat-dude sandwich in a four-guy pile-up, but it's sweet cuz people don't want to trip on you so they help you up if you can't get up.
And Randy, the singer, is so incredibly cool. He said he was having the time of his life, and whenever he said he came here just to hang out with us awesome kids he jumped into the crowd and started screaming his songs. HOLY CRAP that was sweet.
I'm kind of sore from the pit, my legs are messed up and my feet are ruined. When I got out of the pit, all of my clothes and my long hair were completely drenched in sweat, but then i realized that half the sweat in my shirt probably wasn't mine.
And it was so sweet, being with a couple hundred metal fans in a pit, cuz there was an instant connection between everyone. Like when I was buying water, me and this guy looked at each other and screamed "F*CK YEAH! F*CK YEAH!" at each other really loudly, then we went in the pit again and it was sweet.

Ha! That T-shirt design is great. I expect to see you modelling it at SDCC!
The gorilla's good too, but I wouldn't try to go with lighter tones with the crayons and instead just get hard contrast with solid lines of colour and let the white paper be free. Or you could make the background solid black and the floor solid purple and just let the Grape Ape be his own thing in the middle (but you're way to young to remember Grape Ape :p ).

Tad--Really cool that you think I'm improving, it's hard for me to tell a lot of the time.
Generally what happens is that you're excited about your art, then you hit sort of an okay plateau, then you start thinking it really sucks. What it means is that your taste and critical eye is improving faster than your fine motor skills. Right now you've hit another plateau and it's looking good. Just keep drawing! It's neat to see the progress.

Kid C--heh, i actually like what you did with the monkey sketch. The lense flare makes him look like a robot monkey, which is always sweet in my book. and the one with lil HB makes me laugh, he is suprised to see monkeys!

Those are both great, Robert. I guess you can't really go wrong with space monkeys. Great use of heavy blacks and I love the chimps stubby legs. Too bad he lost his banana.
My only criticism on the prom sketch is that it might have looked better with a clean background (pure white, maybe?). It is a good compostion and I like the negative spaces between her body, arms and frame.

Love that last Space Monkey and enjoying the painting experiments. Just like you did in your sketching, don't be so quick to call a painting "done." See if you can add in some detail. You can always take it out as a stylistic choice but you should push yourself to see what you can do.
Try going back into the Batman painting and just work on Bats, leaving the Joker as flat shapes.
Cool stuff.

Pieces like Crab-Friend and Space Monkey! Again! really show a great sense of composition and balance of light and dark. I also really like "Edison" (good name suggestion!) and although the latest sketch page might not be as sponateous because you were trying to do a sequel, it contains some really nice sketches as well (monkey!). I'm not as crazy about the Hellboy piece because of the heavy line weight and the indistinctness of shapes-- just a bit too much black, maybe and not enough clear lines. I like the winged cow skull as a motif though and tentacles are always good.
I also demand that Space Monkey meet Robot Cowboy in an Epic Battle for Galactic Supremacy.

"I don't care anymore" -- That's awesome!
You should start a line of "break up" cards to give to ex's. :D

Johann--Thanks! Glad you like it. That one was done digitally without a sketch in the first place.
Kid C--heh, thank you. The words are actually from a NIN song, "Piggy". I liked how the words looked with it. Break up cards? i might look into that :D.
Dr. Flem--Thanks. Glad you like 'em.
More later at some point. or maybe not.

The skull is really good. Really good choice of colors.
But you know me, I want to push you a bit. Since it's on the computer, save a copy and experiment with adding some detail with shadows and highlights. Keep the loose feel but try to make it pop.
Not that I don't love it as is, I just think this is a great one for you to experiment with.
Morna loved it, btw.

Thanks Tad and invisible Morna. I tried to make it 'pop' some more. I don't know how successful it was, but here it is.

As much as I love the other, this is actually better. The highlights and definition give it more depth.

I'm not sold on the colors themselves, but the addition of color really adds to that piece!
and that watch is terrific! Nice linework in the band and the restraint on the surface the watch is sitting on.
oh and very nice meeting you btw.

Thanks. I'm not super okay with the colors either, i might still tool around with them.
glad you like the watch, looking at it again it looks really sloppy. hurm.
and duh it was sweet meeting you also! we kicked it old school.

Very fun drawings.
Glad you enjoyed GWAR. I've had plenty of shirts ruined by them, ever since their Scumdog tour.

I like the drawing of the girl Robert. Especialy where her hands are pulling down on her top. I think the drawing really shows that posturing well. You gonna slap some color on that??
E. Spears

TWyrm--Thanks! Hell yeah, GWAR is awesome. Just..whoa.
Kid C--hey, if we're gonna do that table thing at SDCC '06 we can trade stuff then man. I call we have to do it, because think about how sweet. I'm thinking about how sweet hell yes. SYL is so incredibly sweet, Dev, at the end of the set, growled at everyone "WE KICKED ASSSS!!"
Petersen--Thanks a lot. Glad that you think it's a successful peice. I'm still thinking about putting color on it, I've almost got a color scheme in my head for it.
In the meantime, I watched a RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE DVD today. I got incredibly pumped. While I was watching it, I drew this little ditty, inspired by the crowd and how sweet RATM is.

Thanks, Dr. Flem. I'm not sure if i'll color that one, actually. I like how the black and white works in this one, but if I think of a particularly brilliant color-scheme I'll color it ;).

Okay, Robert, that is now officially "Kid C's favorite Cure piece".
Totally fricken' AWEsome! I wouldn't bother coloring it. I love the perspective of the gas mask nozzle(?) and those badass bullets.
Bold. Cool. Sweetcore!
