View Full Version : Worst Cover Pose Ever.... Nominations Please
Kirk G
03-24-2008, 08:45 PM
Have we had a thread about this before?
For my money, I've got to nominate the Captain America cover where the "action" begins on the cover, with Cap trapped between to AIM assasins. "Enter the Cyborg"
What was it, issue #124? Wish I had a scan to show you.
Please add a scan of your nominations as well...

Here's one:

But just about any of the covers before and after this one would qualify.

I've got no problem with either the Captain America pose that Kirk offered or the Iron Man #1...but seeing ROK's nomination compels me to say that whatever cover has the worst pose, it's probably gonna be by Mike Grell.
I know Grell has his enthusiasts here, enthusiasts whose tastes and skills of descernment I greatly respect, but I almost cannot find a Grell cover--other than some of his lazy "portrait" covers or occasional covers cribbed from fashion shoots--that doesn't have some incredibly awkward, anatomically-impossible, clumsy, stiff, cramped, or otherwise terrible pose on it. I dare ya: find me one. Make me eat my words by showing me some sleek, elegant, well-posed Grell!

The cover from Byrne's last Superman run with Gail Simone.
He's squatting on the cover, and is built like a midget.
Horrible, horrible pose, and a crappy drawing.

Thought the first: Wow. 1948. Stick that on a DC comic now-a-days, and the blogsphere would freak out.
Thought the second: OK, brown panties, possibly made of rubber. I can dig it. But what the hell is up with that large, green stain.

I always viewed this cover as a collage; I never thought that the guy and girl were actually in the same frame.
Oh crud.... now I'm on a comic book message board defending a Mike Grell cover.:(
And I don't think you're allowed to use the word "coccyx" on this board.

wouldn't she be like a giant if they were really that close and it not being a collage?

anyway sure they are all in the seduciton of the innocents section but if you don't think about any sort of sexual connontations they look very painful to recreate most of those poses.

Mike Grell may be the worst well regarded artist ever. I can't imagine why anyone would think he's that good, but de gustibus, I guess.
His run on the Legion was a panoply of poor anatomy, indistinguishable faces and the worst collection of costumes in history.
To me he's the Vince Colletta of pencillers.

I think Grell was the Rob Liefeld of the 70's. He had some serious flaws, but he also had an exuberance that excited a lot of readers at the time. As best as I can recall, my impression of him in the mid-70's was a mixture of "This looks fun" and "I could do that!", which is, I think, what young Liefeld enthusiasts felt.

Now I'm really confused regarding the second post. Yesterday it was the cover to a collection of the Bizarro newspaper strip (the Far Side clone, not Superman's). Today it's a Grell GL/GA cover. Tetsuo says it's Superman being ridden like a horse.
Regarding Mike Grell: he's a personal friend so I'm not objective. You guys can have that conversation without me.
Cei-U!
I summon the increased confusion!

I always liked Mike Grell. I can't really point out any great examples of his work or vouch for his anatomy skills, but I thought his work stood out in a positive way when I was collecting. I do think he got saddled with some bad inkers, from time to time.
For the purposes of this thread, however, yes those poses do look uncomfortable and one of Sable's arms does appear quite smaller than the other.

I'll stick up for the Grell Legion run - after the blandness of what came before, it weas a huge breath of fresh air
(and I liked most of the updated costumes :o - apart from the "held up by magic" Cosmic Boy one)

I agree. His spaceships and other hardware brought the look of the book up to date. Prior to him, the book looked like the typical DC vision of the future thru 1950s eyes.

Wow, Slam! I think you've finally solved the mystery of exactly why Steve Ditko parted ways with Marvel!
And getting back to Grell, I just want to make it clear that I enjoyed the heck out of most of his Bronze Age work. And although I don't like Liefeld, my comparison between the two was intended to be complimentary; I think it's undeniable that Grell crafted some really bad poses on a regular basis, but somehow the other qualities of his art, especially in the Bronze Age, compensated.
