I've just read one of the first reviews for #511, and apparently Betsy will have a *** **** moment. Don't know how I feel about that...perhaps it's a homage of sorts?

Reading that something popped into my head. Do those stars stand for "eye stab"? I know you can't say anything but I guess it's rhetorical because I don't really want to know if it is.

Personally, telepathic Psylocke is more appealing than telekinetic Psylocke - though the psychic katana she crafted (logistics aside) was always a nice addition to her power set.

I know Revanche used it, but Psylocke's was telekinetic, which is why I said the logistics made no sense to me. And though Kwannon had the katana first, it was still a nice visual, even if it doesn't match the splendor of the psychic blade.

I feel like with Uncanny it doesn't matter anymore. Yes, the Asian body was marketable in the 90s. It was popular in games especially. But since when has Asian Psylocke been popular in the media in the last ten years? She's hardly been featured in any of the games like Ultimate Alliance, she's never in the crossovers with other Marvel characters, she's barely in the new cartoon... I mean Asian Psylocke hasn't been marketable in such a long time anyway. I just feel in comics they are afraid to change things up so that's why they wouldn't want to keep her British. It's like when they change a character in cartoons for one episode and they go back to normal immediately after.

I definitely think if Britsh Betsy had an updated look for 2009 she'd be marketable. She'd be a classier and more beautiful (if she was a model) Emma Frost but with a heart and lovable personality. It just depends on the way they characterize her and Uncanny doesn't characterize ANYBODY with Fraction writing.

Yes, if they never changed her then that body would have moved into the 90s and probably been marketed in some different way. I'm sure they would have sexed her up more to do that though. But they changed it so we'll never know.

Revanche managed to do very well for herself with that body. She is still well known some 12 or even longer years after he death with a loyal fan following. And she had a nice updated costume when she appeared. And she didn't have the history with the team Psylocke had. So I think Psylocke could have worked in her British body if she was given the chance.

I don't think she is unpopular otherwise they wouldn't have brought her back to the 616. But she is in need of a major over haul. Which she may or may not get currently. I think at least now that she is back in the 616 there is a much greater chance of it though.

Yeah I agree. Although I liked Kwannon, I'm hoping they can reveal that Kwannon was never real or that somehow that is Psylocke's body and not someone elses. But I doubt they'll ever try and fix it. Fraction easily could've this arc he set everything up perfectly and then just knocked the stack down.

I first got introduced to Psylocke as a telepathic, shadowporting ninja--so I didn't mind that power. Sure she didn't need the change, but I liked the whole mystical potential that the Crimson Dawn brought. Only thing I started to hate was the tattoo. It just got bigger and bigger until it covered almost half her face.

So I'm glad the tattoo is gone again. Psylocke's face must remain unblemished. :D
I loved her shadow shifting powers! I thought they were fun and made her stand out more.

There are no plans right now for a significant appearance by Psylocke in X-Force, but you never know. As mentioned, there is a storyline coming up after the X-23 arc that will impact the X-Universe in general, and as such Betsy could well make an appearance there.

And while Psylocke could relate to Warren's situation, I don't see Warren opening up to her right now, for fear of hurting her.

Yeah Claremont strung us along for many many issues all throughout Xtreme XMen even AFTER it was announced that she was dead for keeps. It was highly frustrating, it almost felt as though it was to keep certain fans still reading just to keep some sales.

My favorite Titan Omen/Lilith Clay was killed in an awful story called "Graduation Day". I so loved Lilith - the writers have teased many times she would come back. She did eventually as a ZOMBIE! Then she got turned to dust....it was a knife in the already broken heart then twisted....

well Lilith also has a statue at the Titans HQ - I get excited every time they show that statue!

I think I have one issue of that Graduation Day story. I started expanding my horizons around that time and got into a few DC comics for a couple years until I realized I was spending way too much on comics. Now it's back to strictly Marvel (oh and Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

Yeah Claremont strung us along for many many issues all throughout Xtreme XMen even AFTER it was announced that she was dead for keeps. It was highly frustrating, it almost felt as though it was to keep certain fans still reading just to keep some sales.

And then bam she returns in Uncanny. I remember it seemed as though she was dead for sooo long, I mean what three years? We didn't have it as bad as the Jean fans though..

True. Even though I'd be fine with Jean staying dead, I'd still like to see her fans get their wish and she returns. I have what I want (Betsy, Maddie, Illyana, Emma) so why not let someone else have what they want. :biggrin:

I know how you feel. I was pretty bummed around that time myself. X-man and Madelyne Pryor were two of my favorites and they were killed off. Synch was my favorite GenXer and he was killed off. Betsy was killed off in the 616 only to turn around and get killed in the Ultimate universe too. I don't think I've ever hated a comic book as much as I did that Ultimate issue. It was like a sort of dream come true to see her again only to have it taken away. It was the first and only time I ever threw a comic book across the room LOL.

Yeah, Rachel went through some rough times. I think dino-Rachel was the lowest point ever. If that were done to Psylocke I would have been PISSED. Sure it was a way to explore the potential of her power, but turning her into a dinosaur?

this storyarc was pointless. while having to keep her asian no doubt due to higher ups, fraction could have at the very least made her a telepath again. hypothetical scenario: as her british body slowly dies due to dazzler's light blast, betsy uses her newly restored telepathy to transfer her mind back into the asian body. no more TK, no more reality-warping/magic/psychic immunity. simpler. instead, she's as convoluted as ever.

Come on, now! Not everyone likes Asian Psylocke for her pin-up status. I happen to think she's a great character, and besides, she long ago accepted that she is in an Asian body. I mean, GOD! When Jamie Braddock resurrected Betsy, he brought her back as Asian instead of British because even he said it was the form she had accepted as her 'true' self. Not to say that she hated being British, because she didn't, but she now saw herself as 'Asian Psylocke'.

And BESIDES, with Psylocke being the former model/glamour puss she always was, I don't think she'd mind if she was either British or Asian - as long as she was still hot and fashionable along the way!

Eh telepathy would have been better. They just don't want anyone to even come near Emma's niche. Betsy existed as a telepath with Jean for years without any problems.

The TK is wrong. It is not her and it was never supposed to stick. I thought Marvel would let Fraction undo it since he is a favored writer, but apparently not. And honestly I don't know how a TK with mountain smashing level strength is going to work with the X-nerds. A telepath would have worked so much better.

Fraction took the easy way out. He went with the safe status quo option, he took no chances with Marvel higher ups. Thats the reason I hated World War Hulk also. I think that's one thing Land did right (even if it wasn't on purpose). I definitivly perfer the psi-knife to the katana. While the katana was okay during Revolution and X-Treme; I hated it when she came back to life. I don't even care if Betsy is still telekenetic, as long as it's drawn as the psi knife.

I mean, other than that you have a really bad writer and artist making a really messy story. People keep saying characterization saves things but I don't know how anyone thinks Fraction can characterize anyone. None of the mutants have good characterization. I rather Psylocke never come back to Uncanny. Even if she's a ninja, I would rather see Psylocke in any other X-book.

She hasn't been my favorite character in a really long time because she hasn't been written well for years. The body swap just invigorated my interest because it was a change. And it is a comic book and is therefore more visual than anything.

If they turned Storm white I'm sure many fans would be like 'wtf that's not Storm' reguardless of how well written she was or if some writer said "it's ok, she feels more comfortable in this one". It makes no sense to me that you brought up bra size... I think the ninja look is dated. I think the body swap is stupid.

Well I wouldn't expect Psylocke to be upset at Dazzler for doing it. Psylocke wasn't herself and if she hadn't done that Betsy would've probably ended up killing Dazzler. And Dazzler didn't kill Betsy, the blast did burn off half of her face, but that was enough damage to knock some sense into Psylocke, then she turned around and committed suicide since she was still partially influenced by Maddie and Spiral.

Pros:
Dazzler having a scene, and reuniting with betsy.
Seeing Betsy British one more time.
Her Psychic knife hitting!

Cons:
Chimera, the coolest and most interesting of the Sisterhood, not getting no panel time.
Psylocke's british body gone forever.
Psylocke still a telekenetic. No more Telepathic blade, butterflies, or Psycho blasts.
Psylocke being more complicated than ever.
Storm not getting no panel time.
Madylene Pryor fulfilling a baseless purpose.
Phoenix not being in the issue, despite being on the cover.( well, atleast she could of appeared in spirit).

Instead she'll be primarily doing what Land did -- the strange psychic knife that kinda-sorta-does whatever the plot means for it to be. She hits Dazzler with it, and it's physical. She hits herself with it? It fries her own brain. She's neither a standard TK or a TP, she is now what she is.

It's almost kind of like M, a "telepath" who is mostly just a Rogue 2.0 with a different attitude.

So whether or not Psylocke is telepathic or telekinetic, she will never be the telepath (as in the good ol' days) or the telekinetic (because she is awesome fighting ninja!).

Psylocke, sadly, is what she is and will be what she'll be. I'm just miffed Fraction teased that maybe -- just maybe -- Psylocke could be something more than "the ninja."

But srsly. Look at Psylocke from a writing standpoint more, and from a continuity perspective less.

if Emma went off to do the Dark X-men thing and is inevitably snubbed by the group for being evil, Karma went off with the New Mutants, and the cuckoos got lost, psychic Psylocke could have been a great addition as the sole telepath. when she actually has a personality she's a lot more fun to have on the team than most of those other gurls.

i like Psylocke having teke though. if it's Psylocke in Kwannon's Asian body I definitely don't mind. British Betsy however should have been a telepath who at least used her butterfly once (for fan service), because let's face it, that's all this was. If Jean ever comes back I don't know how she would fit but most likely she'd have the phoenix force and that makes her different from a regular telepath. i don't mind Betsy playing second fiddle Emma and Jean. I like her snide attitude towards Emma and her closeness with Jean so it could be cool with all three around.

Man, these threads spread like wildfire. I love it!

It didn't really matter to me which body Psylocke ended up in since I view both of them as Eurasian--except one is a little more Asian than the other, but I think it was pointless to transfer her mind back to her original body only to transfer it back at the end. Fraction could've handled so many things better, but I'll keep this focused on Psylocke.

Psylocke was a telepath again so why couldn't she read any minds to counter-attack her opponents' attacks? When she finally hit Dazzler with the psychic knife, Dazzler should've been out for the count. It's supposed to disrupt the nervous system and lock the mind into a fugue state. The psychic knife has been good enough to take out Wolverine (more than once), Jean, etc. but it does nothing to Dazzler?

Also, Betsy just stood there and let Dazzler make a speech about the city powering her up. The British Betsy of the Outback days would have known what Ali had planned before she could finish her little speech and mind controlled her to take out someone else instead.

In an earlier interview, Matt Fraction clearly said that he was simplifying Psylocke. It made sense then to return her to her roots to reset her, but we should know by now that writers love using misdirection in interviews.

I do wonder if Psylocke's telepathy has been restored, hence the "telekinetic psychic" comment. I guess we'll find out next issue when she joins the X-club on a mission.

Novaya Havoc- Your post actually makes a lot of sense, but part of me will continue to hope that someone writes her more as just the ninja babe with a glowy knife. I'm still holding out for Carey.

My blind rage from yesterday aside I actually have come to love UXM for what it was worth. The swap was ridiculous and unneccesary but it gave some good moments between her and Ali and it really showed how much Betsy had grown. When she first came around she was scared to rip out her bionic camera eyes even though she knew they could do more harm than good, but now she kills herself without a moments hesitation for the greater good. She is a warrior, a friend, and a fantastic character. British body or Asian body it doesnt matter. She IS Elisabeth Braddock through and through and my favorite character no matter what.

OMG and tell me why the emails i sent to Marvel didnt even send!!! They are in my draft box. Oh well, that may have actually been for the best.

Betsy is more Eurasian in my eyes. I dont think Dodson or alot of other artists realize that fact and just draw her straight Asian. Yardin drew a beautiful picture of Betsy and you can tell he was very keen on showing her european and asian features mixed together.

On an unrelated topic, if Claremont is so in love with Betsy, why is she not a main character in X-Men Forever? Since he can do what he wants there, he could put her back in her British Body as was his plan.

I hope so. I would love to see her British again without all the vitriol that goes along with her bodies. That way BOTH sets of fans can get what they want.

A WORD OF SENSIBILITY TO THE PSYLOCKE PSQUADRON:

Telepathic Psylocke will never re-gain dominance. Understand this. Telepathic Psylocke emerged in an age where the X-Men had no telepaths what-so-ever: Jean was dead, Rachel sucked, and Xavier was feasting on Lilandra's feathery snooch. There was a need for a telepath in Psylocke in those times.

NOW!!!! We have many telepaths. Primarily, we have Emma Frost x4 and Xavier. Even in the Blue/Gold era, Psylocke's telepathy was neutered (via the "psychic knife") because we had MomJeans and Xavier in the X-Men. Even then she was a "telepath" but they had to re-work her character as "Psionic Knife" to make her somehow different and able to fit into battle sequences. KAAAAIII!

As awesome as it would be to have the Psylocke of the Outback back (and I love love love love LOVE Outback Psylocke), she was a character product of the roster-time. She was not Jean (or mini-Jean, Rachel), and Xavier was MIA.

The only angle Psylocke has left as a character is as a ninja, albeit one with nebulous psychic powers. She may be a telepath. She may be a telekinetic. Instead she'll be primarily doing what Land did -- the strange psychic knife that kinda-sorta-does whatever the plot means for it to be. She hits Dazzler with it, and it's physical. She hits herself with it? It fries her own brain. She's neither a standard TK or a TP, she is now what she is.

It's almost kind of like M, a "telepath" who is mostly just a Rogue 2.0 with a different attitude.

So whether or not Psylocke is telepathic or telekinetic, she will never be the telepath (as in the good ol' days) or the telekinetic (because she is awesome fighting ninja!).

Psylocke, sadly, is what she is and will be what she'll be. I'm just miffed Fraction teased that maybe -- just maybe -- Psylocke could be something more than "the ninja."

But srsly. Look at Psylocke from a writing standpoint more, and from a continuity perspective less.


Sadly I must concur with ya. I think Psylocke is now what she is. Meaning that she IS whatever the writers want her to be. Period.

it'd be funny though that since she can close her own wounds, and fly, turn invisible, and all that other nonsensical crap. That she can't alter her own body again to look british like R'chel did when she turned all Jurassic on us.

It didn't really matter to me which body Psylocke ended up in since I view both of them as Eurasian--except one is a little more Asian than the other, but I think it was pointless to transfer her mind back to her original body only to transfer it back at the end. Fraction could've handled so many things better, but I'll keep this focused on Psylocke.

Psylocke was a telepath again so why couldn't she read any minds to counter-attack her opponents' attacks? When she finally hit Dazzler with the psychic knife, Dazzler should've been out for the count. It's supposed to disrupt the nervous system and lock the mind into a fugue state. The psychic knife has been good enough to take out Wolverine (more than once), Jean, etc. but it does nothing to Dazzler?

Also, Betsy just stood there and let Dazzler make a speech about the city powering her up. The British Betsy of the Outback days would have known what Ali had planned before she could finish her little speech and mind controlled her to take out someone else instead.

In an earlier interview, Matt Fraction clearly said that he was simplifying Psylocke. It made sense then to return her to her roots to reset her, but we should know by now that writers love using misdirection in interviews.

I do wonder if Psylocke's telepathy has been restored, hence the "telekinetic psychic" comment. I guess we'll find out next issue when she joins the X-club on a mission.
