So I asked Mike Carey some questions and he delievered. About Psylocke and the new direction.


Mike Carey Hi Chris. Same question came up in this week's X-Position on CBR, so see my answer there. :) Basically, I'm going to bring her in when I can make it seem natural. The announcement should come any day now. I hope. It has to be before the solicits for #226, anyway, because the cover is kind of a give-away...

You know I just reread the Sword of the Braddock's again today....


I realize just what an AWFUL writer CC has become. The build up to the tension of Slaymaster versus Psylocke was damn anti-climatic. The way the story was told.. as if in recollection. The actual Battle seemed more like a danger room session than a Fight for existence. I never once felt she was in danger. Even in a monthly series I'd like to feel that my hero/heroine might not make it.. only to rise again.

You guys remember back when Daredevils old foes teamed up and jumped him? After Typhoid poisoned his system.. DD got FRAKKED UP! I really felt he was gonna croak. The build up and the battle.. VERY one sided.. DD didnt even win.. he got hosed. But then the villain who put him in that situation SAVED HIM.

THAT was edge of the seat DAMN good writing. And then to top it off Inferno Takes place and in his Defeated Dazed and Drugged state. He took on a demon Train and won, he took on Mephistos son and won. CC really had a moment to shine with this mini.. Only the Art saved it.

Funny thing is the Asian Psylocke Mini in the back was more fun to read and look at than the actual lead story..

I just read the Sword of the Braddocks and I found it interesting. I do not think I had read a Psylocke focused story before, it helped me to learn a little more about Betsy. I liked the main story more than the mini.

About the 508 preview.. I'm not sure what's the deal with Kwannon's body..
Will Revanche be resurrected? Not sure yet.. I think I've heard somewhere that the Sisterhood need all the psychics they need.

I'm just holding out to the announcement made by Marvel that #510 will be the issue where PSYLOCKE returning to the X-Men.

drwho, that's a great Psylocke's figure. I'd love to have that figure..

When it comes to the 508 preview Im both intrigued and disgusted. The storyline is like what in the heck does the Sisterhood want with Kwannon, but then i remember who Kwannon is and im like UGH. I never cared much for Kwannon.

Matt Fraction mentioned the first heist as a "test run". Why they chose Kwannon was probably Spiral's idea.

I would like to see Betsy utilize her skills as a Charter Pilot & talk about her past experience as an agent of STRIKE, and talk about her heritage specifically her father who was a top knight of Merlin's from the Magical Otherworld Dimension.

I have several burning questions from that preview:

1) Why didn't Domino recognize Spiral and Lady Deathstrike? She's battled them before and should at the very least be aware of who they are.

2) Why was Kwannon/Revanche buried at Logan's private cemetery? It's the place where he buries/remembers those closest to him, so what sort of relationship did he and Kwannon have? I mean this is the place where Amiko's mom is buried (we first saw this location in the late 90s issues of Wolverine's solo series where, incidentally, Chimera attacked him in one of her first appearances!). It seems odd that she'd be there.

3) Other than just continuity nuttiness, who wants Revanche resurrected, anyway? Spiral's whim, perhaps?

i like this issue cuz Betsy is back. But now im confused so some betsyhaters are saying they killed her to bring back.Kwannon. but Maddie out right says. that she was gonna fill a dead girls body with a live one. and thats Betsys original body. So basically she put psylocke back into her own body. YYYAAAYYYY so from what I've read my theory is is that the Sisterhood kidnapped Betsy (in Kwannon body) after she returned from Exiles & stole the coffin of Kwannon (in Betsy body), did some mumbo jumbo magic, and transfered Betsy's soul from Asian body to the newly ressurected British body Kwannon previously inhabited before sucoming and dying to the Legacy Virus. Now we have original Betsy back in the body she was born into (with purple hair not blonde,TP & Precognition), therefore we have Kwannons Asian body die because her spirit already went to the afterlife, and the reason she doesnt remember anyone is cause the sisterhood manipulated her mind so that she will follow thier orders. After this arc is finished I would like to see Betsy join M:13, and Kwannon (with black hair,TK/Low Empathy) either be a villian in the X-Verse, or join X-Force

i really love the cover and i'm glad it's finally released. and i hope she stays in the British body but feel bad for all the fans who want her to stay Asian. i think she's still Asian in Exiles though so that's good for you all.

i doubt that's kwannon. fraction said in his most recent interview that the red queen used psylocke as a test run for transferring souls into dead bodies. if anything, the red queen will transfer herself into jean's dead body so she can control the phoenix. the problem, though, is that jean allowed her body to be obliterated by an event horizon at the end of x-men:phoenix endsong.

Well...Betsy is now in the body she had,more or less,rejected...Can't say I'm happy about that...

She has NEVER rejected her old Body EVER. She felt that after the Trials and Tribulations with Kwannon that she had finally become the Warrior she wanted to become. I have screenies to prove it. Betsy has NEVER had self hatred liek that. She just wanted to get up close to foes. In the life she lived and upbringing. She was not that tough.

She was constantly being a victim for awhile.. so she got fed up with it and did something about it. Psylocke was a VERY successful telepathic combatant when the correct writers had their mitts on her. She did more damage than her Ninja mode did. She never had self hate.

Being British does not make you weak. Being Asian does not make you a warrior.

The British have a loooooong history as a warrior culture... an almost elegant one. Asia has a more honorable system back then.. doesnt mean everyone followed the honor code however.. look at Musashi.

I was thinking that too, but he also said he brought her back to "simplify" her character. The only thing that could complicate the insane amount of changes

I like this idea. Despite the fact that I despise Kwannon having her stick around could make for some pretty decent storylines for the two. Kwannon could be upset that Betts lived so long in her body and now she is going to make up for lost time, she could be upset and want revenge. Betsy keeps getting mad people think thinking she is still asian and wonder who the random british chick is.

You're right! That would be extremely stupid and unnecessary to have her back in the Asian body now. Totally overkill! I'm willing to believe that Paquette didn't know about the new body swap, or they have told him to draw Psylocke in an ambiguous manner to avoid the big reveal to be spoiled.

That will be interesting watching her throw a punch and coming oh so short... All kinds of classic-ness can be gotten from the facial expression she'd make. Kinda like when she Punched R'chel.. and knocked her to timbuktu.

Funny thing is thats a crock of sh^^^. People who only know her as asian say thats to stop confusion. Whatever!. Jubilee is more marketable simply because people recognize her from the X-men cartoon. not everyone plays fighting games.. So it's not that. She's got a couple statues and some crappy(storm to) action figures.. but it's not that.

Marvel can market anybody.. people that dont think so are full of it.

Hmm, I'm not sure if she wasn't happy with her body, I think she just wasn't happy that she wasn't powerful or strong enough to protect her loved ones. Even if she's British now, it doesn't mean she still doesn't know how to engage in hand to hand combat, but I honestly doubt this will be the case anyhow. She'll most likely be Asian by the end of the arc, but that's me being pessimistic.

It's not retconning continuity. If anything it's opening up avenues which the past 15 years of continuity has tried to repress or ignore. The character of Psylocke was greatly damaged in many ways by the transformation into Asian Ninja, in the long term. Betsy will still have all that combat knowledge, she should have her original powerset back, and to be honest it's been a long time since anybody drew her specifically Asian, anyway.

Marginally longer, yes. But as long as she remained in it it gave writers an excuse not to write her as a British character. I don't think her look is particularly unique, either. It became a 90s cliche. She will still be quite recognisable in her real body. If nothing else it will remind people of who she really is, and how she got to be that person.

But that is a large part of Psylocke's life. Spiral gets to do that from time to time. And hopefully Betsy gets to kick her butt for meddling afterwards. That Psi-blast of hers is just waiting to get a chance to fry her brain, no doubt. Give it time.

Psylocke first appeared in 1976 as a Caucasian Brit.
She became Asian at the end of 1989. So as was stated marginally longer.

Her entire history has had her always being victim to somebody, whether as a Brit or as Ninjababe.

Well, the connection they shared through being twins has been maintained through the previous two different bodies Betsy has worn since being removed from her real one. One woud assume that now she has been placed back into her real body it would still hold. Logically, I can't see whyit wouldn't.

I'd love to see an MI13 guest appearance in Uncanny. It's about time we saw more more Braddock twin interaction. And after semi-recent events can you imagine how pissed Pete Wisdom is going to be with the X-Men, over Kitty? There's no love lost between him and Colossus as it is, but Wisdom always felt Pryde was held back by the persuing of the X-Men's goals. Now they've left her for dead? Sparks would fly.

I also thinks it's a welcome thing whenever the X-Men get to interact with Marvel Universe teams.

Although, these days in particular, covers are often done with little communication relating to the story they're actually covering. The cover in question is also a stylised period piece. I wouldn't read too much into it one way or another, tbh.

Oh I like it! That looks like her Legends costume only pink. I think it's great! And I've always wanted them to draw Betsy's hair pined up on top like that. The hood and Mask was to provide all around protection from close combat. The hood was made of A material similar to chainmail and the mask added to the mystique and also protection.. Well except for an Eye or mouth shot/cut/bite/etc.

The Aussie armor was one of her best costumes, it added so much mistery to the character. She always seemed like that to me. Like she was the X-Men's wildcard, apart from Logan, she was the one who the enemies didn't know what would do.

Well, Betsy was the "powerful" psi and her original body would've been the one to retain those genetics. Kwannon was just a low level empath originally.

If I was in charge I would make the Sisterhood use the empty body as a weapon and leave the British one alone. That way both could still exist and be alive. I think that in the end, they will stop Red Queen's plan to possess either Jean's or the real Madelyne's bodies, and maybe she'll have to hide inside the Asian body.

that can either be explained by a)that only applied to her in her asian body; or b) the magics of the red queen and spiral are more powerful than what jamie braddock did to her. the scarlet witch was able to affect betsy during the HoM so she's not completely immune. claremont always likes to define things in absolutes but he breaks those rules all the time himself.

Im so disheartened when i think about my poor psylocke has gone thorugh. She was butchered by writers who didnt know what to do with her and gained this horribel reputation. i always felt that the Emma frost of today is where my beloved Psylocke should have been. Albeit with some slight differences but pretty much the same premise. I really hope that someone like Carey or Yost(DONT KILL HER) gets a hold of her and returns my fair maiden to her glory. She deserves it.

They should have just made another character to be the asian ninja instead of mukking up Betsy.


Exactly, in the Captain Britain TPB an alternate dimension Kaptain Britain attacked her and she fried his brain and killed him, and the same guy had just beat the real Captain Britain in a fight.

Yeah I unfortunately think she will stay Asian but this is only a sketch and most artists are gonna sketch her as Asian so they mightnot know what was going to happen in Uncanny.

Yeah, I was noticing that this Utopia one-shot is released before Uncanny #511 the conclusion to the Sisterhood arc. So if she does revert to Asian, wouldn't that spoil the ending to Sisterhood since Utopia takes place afterwards?

But there are so many hints and clues that point to Betsy staying Asian. Fraction's tease months ago about waiting for the arc to play out before we made any judgements, Campbell's variant cover for the next issue has Psylocke looking Jim Lee style, she even has a fucking Asian back drop for shits sake and now Silvestri has her Asian on a future story. Not to mention the cover to #512 looks more like Asian Psylocke than British.

At this point, I'm not going to bitch for bitching sakes. Yes I would prefer British Betsy anyday over Asian Psylocke, but atleast Claremont isn't writing her, she's not in Exiles, she's back in Uncanny and things are looking better for her and signs are pointing that she'll be a telepath again soon!

Maybe a good way to say this is, to just be thankful she is returning to the main title? Even if in asian and not british form as many prefer? It could be worse, Polaris fans for example do not even know for sure if Lorna would return to earth, yet.

Who knows! I seriously wouldn't doubt the possibilities of new ongoing titles spinning out of the conclusion of the War of Kings or returning them back to the 616 just in time for the conclusion of the Messiah trilogy. Especially with her mentioning Jean by 'mom' recently.

That is what I mean, to enjoy the character and not worry so much about the body. This is not the same as, I think in Alpha Flight someone came back but had to be stuck in a robot body? Langkowski stuck in the Box body? Something like that. Psylocke is pretty either Asian or British!

Utopia has been delayed to the 24th of June.

I also hope that Polaris, Rachel, and Havok return to Earth after War of Kings is over. If Jean does indeed return in Uncanny X-Men 511 (I hope and believe she does), Rachel and Jean could finally have some long overdue interactions.

I would also like it if Betsy becomes a telepath again, no matter the form. I wonder how she reverts back to her Asian body in 510?

Yeah Psylocke's hair color when she was British was originally blonde, and then she started to dye it purple when she became a famous model. But her hair color originally was always a lighter purple, lavender shade. Rather when the body switch occurred it was a jet black with purple hue.

Betsy is back. Thats all i hoped for. While i will be somewhat befuddled if she returns to her asian body. i mean what was the point if only to gas up the head of her fans, i will still be happy she is around and hopefully effective.
