I only read trades (money conservative issues.) So all these question probably relate to things that happen in between the trades. (I currently have Outsiders 1-6 and the cross-over trade with the Teen Titans)... I've got other team trades but I'm not sure they relate to questions.
1.) Can someone please fill me in on what happens between volume 4-5 of the outsiders?
2.) What happen to Shift? While reading the opening of the Outsiders volume 5 he was described as Rex Mason and Metamorpho then Molecular Man. Yet I thought they already resolved this as him not actually being Rex and that he created his own identity as Shift.
3.) (Question valid as I found the answer on the next page.)
4.) Was Starfire depowered (well not depowered but had her power level lowered) permanently or temporarily?
5.) When did Nightwing come back and under what circumstances?
6.) Did Jade die inbetween these volumes I don't see her yet they are still calling Nightwing former leader? Who's leader now (at least during vol 5.)
7.) Why the heck did Thunder change her appearance, she looked cute pre 1 year later. She and the others look chubby now to.. Though that maybe because of the penciler.
8.) I'm confused about when Freddy disappears from the team, and where is Arsenal during the opening of Vol 5 while everyones in Africa?
9.) How did they convince everyone they were dead? (the outsiders that is.)
10.) Did they convince the world they were dead before or after Nightwing and where is the introduction of Captain Boomerang in the story?

1.) Can someone please fill me in on what happens between volume 4-5 of the outsiders? One Year Later is what happened. After Infinite Crisis, DC decided it would be fun for all books to jump one year ahead, with 52 filling in some of the blanks. Most of these blanks didn't get much filling. It pretty much killed a number of previously excellent books.
2.) What happen to Shift? He remerged with Metamorpho during the missing year. So he basically died of panel.
4.) Was Starfire depowered (well not depowered but had her power level lowered) permanently or temporarily?Yeah, I'd like to know this too.
5.)When did Nightwing come back and under what circumstances?Serious editorial screw up. Originally, Dick Grayson was going to die in Infinite Crisis, and Jason Todd would take up the Nightwing mantle. At the very last moment (and after the art for the first Outsiders issue of OYL was completed) they reversed this decision and kept him alive. The Nightwing you see at the start of vol. 5 (the OYL story) is clearly written to be the much more brutal Jason Todd.
As to how he came back to the Outsiders, it happened of panel during the missing year.
6.) Did Jade die inbetween these volumes I don't see her yet they are still calling Nightwing former leader? Who's leader now (at least during vol 5.)Jade died during Infinite Crisis, fighting some cosmic bollocks I can't quite remember right now.
7.) Why the heck did Thunder change her appearance, she looked cute pre 1 year later. She and the others look chubby now to.. Though that maybe because of the penciler.*shrug* Why would she keep the same look year in year out? Maybe she got tired of wearing a wig.
8.)and where is Arsenal during the opening of Vol 5 while everyones in Africa?Changed his name to Red Arrow, and joined the JLA.
9.)How did they convince everyone they were dead? (the outsiders that is.)IIRC they were supposed to have been killed in a massive superfight in Metropolis during Infinite Crisis.
10.) Did they convince the world they were dead before or after Nightwing and where is the introduction of Captain Boomerang in the story?Who knows, and Boomerang got introduced off panel during the missing year.
Other than Wonder Woman and Teen Titans, no book suffered from One Year Later as much as Outsiders.

Shifts merging with Metamorpho was shown in flashback, he couldn't deal with the pain of being responsible (in his eyes) for all the deaths at the prison breakout. You need to read the flashback issues that deal ith what happened during the missing year before the OYL changover. A lot of stuff is made clear in the Pay As You Go arc (vil 6 I think).
Starfire wasn't depowred, hell she's shown to be far more powerful thenanyone realizes in one scene I distincly remember, she holds back her power because she is so powerful and when used at ful strength there's no guarentee that she can control it enough to prevent deaths.
The reasons Arsenal left are explained in Pay As You Go.
The superfight at Metrololis had nothing to do with why they were considered dead. 'Pay As You Go' explains all.
Captain Boomerangs was introduced on panel, in the issues before IC and OYL he was one of the villains at the nuclear plant (Roy carried him out before the exploasion) the in Pay As You Go the reason he's on the team is fully explained.
Winick's Flashback explaination of what happened in the missing year was one of the better written explainations at that time. Most books suffered from the OYL jump, ad many fans were left confused, as a result DC had a bunch of flashback stories written to fill in the gaps, The Outsiders-'Pay As You Go' was one of the better ones. You just need to pick that up and you'll have your answers.

Yeah I just read it, and it does answer a lot of questions, to bad it has to end there... I've been thinking about picking up Batman and the Outsiders (Assuming it's the one that follows this one) but I'm kind of skeptical. See I'm not so sure I like Batman's team, and I was digging the new team vibe Nightwing had when he first started leading the team.
I don't know whats Batman's reasons for wanting to take over the operation but perhapes I'll make Batman and the Outsiders my final trades for a while.

I dropped the book when Batman took over. I wasn't keen on that team either. Green Arrow (Oliver Queen) initially took over funding the team so that Roy wouldn't feel obligated to stay and Ollie didn't feel the type of work Outsiders were doing suited Roy (too dark or something and Ollie felt his 'son' should be more in the light, he wante him in the JLA) (this was explained in Green Arrow)...Batmans reasons for taking over were kind of simular, he felt the kinds of things the Outsiders needed to do to make a difference were not the kind of things he wanted Nightwing to be involved in, he knew his son and didn't feel Dick would be able to do what had to be done and not feel bad about it (My gist of it anyway). There are other reasons s well, but some of them are yet to be revealed. Didio says we'll find out by years end what those reasons were.
