Sketch Update... 3.23.08 Zatanna Times 3...!

Zatanna.. ZATANNA...ZATANNA.. WHAT MAKES PEOPLE SO CRAZY FOR ZATANNA DRAWINGS..? Personally I don't get it... I get asked to draw Zatanna all the time by fans and yet most people that i talk to seem to agree that she wouldn't be able to sustain a monthly title... Strange indeed!

This crazy sketch update is in three pieces.. the first is a in pencil , then ink... then colors... But to be fair, the colored piece was created using a scan of the art in the pencil stage... Why did I do that..? I don't know.. I just got bored and started coloring the pencils before inking... Don't ask for a reason, I just did it!

Anyways.. Here she is in all here fish-net glory!

Well I love her outfit! Fishnets and fence nets are sexy.

Speaking of which, I like that in her current look she doesn't have a standard super hero costume, it's her work outfit - and that it's not the same thing every time! That was one bit in in Morrison's mini that I really liked. No girl is going to constantly wear the same thing, especially if she's got a closet full of amazing sparkly clothes. :)

I think one of the big reasons people dig Zee so much is that she's sexy and cute (and funny!) in a cheesecake way, not a pouty super slut with everything on display. That gets old extremely fast. And when she is depicted that way, it never looks right.. You can get away with that with Emma Frost or Vampirella but never with Zatanna. (Not that I like it when Em and Vampi are portrayed as mindless sex slaves, it seems a bit too easy to me, but it does fit a bit more in line with their personalities)

And again, I think if the right writer(s) came along she could to a monthly. Unfortunately I doubt DC would green light that.. I'm still hopeful for another mini or maxi series though!

Enough of my rant.. onto the art!
This piece looks a lot tighter than some of your others, both in the pencils and colors. I like the inked version best of the three, love the stars coming out of her hat!

Kristin.. You are awesome as always..! I know that you have a soft spot for Zatanna( and have had it longer than about any one I know)...
I think that the 70's DC magic spectacular drawn by Gray Marrow has to be my favorite Zatanna anything.. I love her in that.. ( and yes, her costume looks more like chothes there than anywhere else)... if you Zatanna fans don't have it, go out and get it!


... oh yeah.. you should make an effort to come out to the Pittsburgh con ... If i know your tastes like I think that I do, you'll be very happy with the guest list!

I'd love to make it to Pittsburgh, and you're right on the money about how much I'm loving that guest list!
If not this year then certainly next- I'm dying to meet Jim and Holly, and they only do the Pittsburgh con and San Diego.. and honestly Pittsburgh sounds a whole lot more appealing than San D.

Heya Stu! I was catching up on news from SDCC and found out Zatanna is going to have her own monthly title! It starts in January and will be written by Paul Dini. ..just thought I should share that bit of news with ya. :biggrin:



ps- I'm finalizing my WWTX plans, so I should be seeing you in November!
