I mostly collect Marvel comics and up until recently only collected one DC title (Jonah Hex). I picked up Death of the New Gods because of Starlin, and will also be doing the same with the Holy War mini. I am not as familiar with DC's pantheon of cosmic-type characters, and was wondering what recent trades (like Rann-Thanagar War, maybe?) I should pick up to get up to speed on the backstory, so when I pick up Holy War I will have some idea of what's going on. Thanks!

Try out both "Adam Strange: Planet Heist" and "Rann Thanager War," the Adam Strange book really explains why the war started. You may also want to try to find the Infinite Crisis Special: Rann Thanagar War comic, that has a pretty big reveal in it as well and is not part of the trade if I remember correctly b/c it's part of the infinite crisis companion book. Happy reading.

Rann-Thanagar War receives mixed reviews, but I personally loved it. Of course, I'm a huge Hawkman fan, and with him being a prominent player in the series, I'm also admittedly bias.

I'd also recommend checking out Starlin's Mystery in Space mini from a couple of years back. In my opinion, his Death of the New Gods stuff hasn't been so hot, but if Holy War is even close to MiS's quality, I'll be a happy camper.

It might also be a good idea to see if you can get the back issues to the recently released Countdown to Adventure. The eighth and final issue comes out this week, if I'm not mistaken. It isn't very relevant to the happenings of Rann or Thanagar, but it does cover a few corners of the DC universe, and will also further acquaint you with a few of the characters set to appear in Holy War.

Hope this helps.

It sounds like Holy War is very much a pure mix of Starlin's Mystery in Space and The Rann-Thanagar War: story-wise and character-wise. So definitely pick those 2 up.

Skip Death of the New Gods - for a variety of reasons - but mainly because it's got nothing to do with Holy War... :p

I'm looking forward to this for many reasons, but most of for for Ron Lim's art he really is great and I have always enjoyed his work. He especially excels at stories in the cosmic setting.

I'm just the opposite. I was looking forward to the project until I heard Lim was drawing it.

When I first heard about the book I assumed (and hadn't fully read the article or solicitation, whichever it was) Starlin was doing the art as well. That would've made it a must-buy for me.

As it stands, I am definitely passing on the mini-series. But, may pick up the trade.

Stuff that ties into Holy War

Mystery in Space
Adam Strange: Planet Heist
Omega Men (the recent mini)
Rann/Thanagar War
Countdown to Adventure

Lady Styx play a big part in the Omega Men mini, and it is her cult that is a big part of the main Countdown to Adventure story.
