I have never been a fan of Hulk. The first time i read him and his series for him was Planet Hulk just cause the general/leader Hulk was a good read.

Yesterday i read Hulk :Gray which i found very good cause the art and the tone of the story.

Im looking for really good stories for Hulk newbie, for someone who want to see whats so intresting about him ?

For example i was reading Wolverine vol 1 series by Claremont and i saw a gray, gangster looking Hulk. Was he called The Fixer then or working for someone called that ? Was it from the Peter David's run that i have heard about ?

By Classic i dont mean old stories i mean classic stories in both modern classic and older stories.

You can't go wrong with starting at John Byrne's first issue #314 and continuing all through Peter David's run. The Dale Keown/Peter David issues are terrific starting at #367.

The Joe Fixit stuff is all Peter David too, starting around #350 or so...

Thanks for the tips guys.

Are there other Hulk stories you recommend ? In other series where he plays an interesting role or a limited series like Hulk:Gray ?

I liked the Defenders mini, but a lot of people hated it.

Obviously check out Planet Hulk. It's only it Hardcover form at the moment I think though, no paperback.

WWH was kinda crappy, but after you read PH you'll wanna read it.

I can't stress Future Imperfect enough though, man. It is essential for all Hulk fans. It's only 2 issues too. I'm not sure if there is a trade, but I'd imagine there is somewhere.

Yeah Future Imperfect is good. More Peter David stuff with George Perez artwork. There was a trade out there at one time...

Lemme second the recommendation of the Peter David run on Hulk. So much good stuff in that 12 year run on the character. Four volumes (five?) have already been collected in trade and are well worth checking out.

My favorite PAD era is the Joe Fixit/Vegas days. Excellent.

Another shout out to Hulk: Future Imperfect and Hulk: The End. Both excellent stories.

Personally, I loved World War Hulk, though I understand the criticism of it.

a new trade has recently come out, it has the future imperfect issues as well as hulk: the end. here's a link to it:

Bill Mantlo's run(250-something to 313), which came out shortly before the runs mentioned in this thread, was also pretty good.

For about twenty issues Mantlo dealt with a "Smart" Hulk with Banner's brains, but then did a complete turnaround and gave us a destructive, mute Hulk who was exiled to another dimension. Eventually when he finds his way back we learn Banner/the Hulk's pre-gamma backstory, which became signifigant in later runs such as Peter David's and Paul Jenkin's, as well as Ang Lee's film.

Of the last few few years, Paul Jenkin's 20-issue run is pretty good. It's sort of like the Peter David run in spirit but makes a few controversial retcons here and there. Plus it's where the Hulk movie got the idea of the gamma dogs.

Many people are split on the Bruce Jones run, which was the largest run so far this decade ( I think).

This is an awesome HC, cause it contains two great Hulk stories, both having to do with post apocalyptic environments. Personally I also liked the Bruce Jones run, up to a point.

rember that one time a smart ass got in his face and Hulk Told hin to Shut the #%# up, I'm the #%^ing Hulk!

It was in Pad's run

heh, i saw a scan of that floating around somewhere but i didn't read the actual ish..

and i liked the bruce jones run! i collected it in TPB form though (as i do with most of my comics), i probably would have been frustrated as hell if i had to wait month after month with the thing, though. it just leaves you in a sense of "wtf is going on?" for a long time.. think of it as the comic book version of lost, i suppose :p

as for jenkins' run, i read the dogs of war tpb, and i didn't like it :( the first xbox/ps2/gc hulk game definitely drew heavy reference from this book.

still, you're best off with the aforementioned hulk: the end tpb. can't go wrong there, everyone universally pretty much loves it

This was in the Piecemal/Madman Cross with the guest appearance from British Comics Characters - Motormouth and Killpower. That issue was great... writing and art. Ah, nostalgia.

Thanks again guys !

I think i will get the future imperfect, hulk end trade.

Then i will try the ongoing and Byrne,PAD runs. Most im looking forward to Fixit stories, i liked him when i saw him in wolverine.

About Planet Hulk i enjoyed it alot. For me before that i saw Hulk only as angry smasher so i loved seeing him being calm, lead the rebellion etc

I stopped reading it cause i didnt like how i was forced to read WW Hulk who was a huge crossover. Shame since Planet Hulk was perfect, easy to add to your pullist being only in Hulk comics.

Geez, two or three runs/minis is terrible. I bet we could whip off a dozen Batman, Superman, JLA, Avengers, X-men, Wolverine, Spiderman, heck even Daredevil, Punisher, and Silver Surfer arcs easier than the hulk. I wonder why that is?

You know, Libaxx, to be more specific with PAD's run, he had two fantastic artists working with him in good chunks of that run: McFarlane and Keown. And not only was Fixit a great character, but Prof. Hulk, which came after was also great. Not to mention, he introduced the Pantheon, a sorely underused set of characters these days.

And get Jones' run. Or at least read it. The people here that hated it, probably hated it because he brought Betty back (but not really) and the ending was rushed. But the journey, in my opinion, was a lot of fun. If you like X-files type stories, with a little Bill Bixby/Hulk TV Show thrown in, you'll love that story. And his use of Nadia Blonsky (Abomination's wife) and Doc Sampson was intelligent and fun. As well as introducing, what I think, was one of the biggest badass villians in Hulk history: Agent Smith.

But, again, beware the sloppy ending.

Also: Hulk/Thing: Hard Knocks, Wolverine/Hulk: Six Hours was decent. Ultimate Human (if you like Ultimate stuff) is also good.

If you do pick up WWH, might I suggest getting the Avengers: Initiative and X-men tie-ins as well as the Hulk/Sentry one-shot that preceded WWH? Those are good stories that effect WWH.

I didnt know McFarlane did Hulk, i have enjoyed McFarlane's art in his spidey days.

His Spidey/Venom art is my alltime favorit Spidey artist.

Yep. In fact, since you like McFarlane, Mr. Fixit, and Wolverine, check out Ground Zero in TPB form. It collects some of the PAD/McF stuff and has all of the above in it. One of the most famous covers of all time is McFarlane doing wolverine and hulk. Hulk #340.

Just to say it again, I read PAD's whole run over the summer in maybe 2-3 days, and it was awesome, I really lost myself in it. I agree that Jones' run was pretty badass too. And of course Planet Hulk ;) its a modern classic right?

Hmmm,

Not to beat a dead horse, but PAD should bring back Motormouth and Killpower. He wrote them in great, and I'd love to see a Merc team-up between the two! Err... the two being She-Hulk and KP/MM!

Good Hulk runs are:

Mr Fixit : 347-359
Iron Man Crossover : 361
Acts Of Vengeance : 363
Countdown : 364-367
Dale Keown run : 369 - 375
Merger : 376, 377
Beginning of the Pantheon: 379 - 382
Rick Jones - Marlo wedding: 417, 418
Jim Wilson story : 420
End Of The Pantheon : 421-425

Partial Bill Mantlo run: 247-273

Partial Len Wein run: 192-212

And Hulk 329, which was a heartbreaking story.

What happened in 329, again?
If it, the Rick Jones Hulk found lots of animals who had been victim of gamma rays. The animals could talk and he felt at home with them, but the army had to ruin everything.
