View Full Version : Who is your favourite member of the Imperial Guard?

I did a poll for the Starjammers about a month ago, so I'll create a poll for the Imperial Guard now.

Which one do you like best?

You don't have to necessarily know the character, just select the character you've always liked best for some reason. If your favourite isn't an option then vote other and you can state in a post who this is...

The Imperial Guard don't seem to get much attention here, considering this place is fairly friendly towards obscure characters... so feel free to discuss them here.

Don't really know much about the Imperial Guard but I've always liked Oracle. Probably since I first saw her in TAS.

Mine's Oracle. The telepath. I don't know why, but I was happy to see her get a significant (non-speaking) part in... Beyond Good and Evil in TAS.

Then she turned up naked at the X-Mansion in New X-Men #124 when the Imperial Guard attacked the school for no reason, with a new look.

No. Anyway, I based the list mostly on who mainly appeared in Emperor Vulcan.

No SCINTILLA?!?!

No Scintilla. I don't even know if she appeared in Emperor Vulcan... I think it was either her or Magique. She did turn up in RAFOTSE though.

Ugh! He pisses me off because of that. He refuses to think for himself and that just aggravates me because there were so many times where an entire battle could have been solved and lives could have been saved if it weren't for his absolute "loyalty to the thrown."

Favorite Imperial Guard?

That's like having a favorite Squadron Superme member, or favorite Extremist. I mean they're a self-concious Legion of Superhero rip-off who exist as cannon fodder for the Xmen to beat up.

My geekdom is strong but not strong enough to form an opinion on cardboard cut-out characters.

I want to see an Imperial Guard series. Maybe a maxi-series (12 parts) exploring all the unanswered questions and issues that haven't been touched on extensively.

I want to see a recruitment process, where super-powered aliens from all across the Shi'ar Empire undergo an "Initiative" style training regime to weed out the weaklings in order to recruit new Guardsmen.

They could show the heirarchy of the IG, and what it takes to become a "Super-Guardian" and eventually a Praetorian, joining the inner circle of the Elite Guardians. An honor bestowed only to the best of the best.

Gladiator-

I want to see him as more of a god-like being, with his regal, majestic presence having an awe-inspiring effect on the "lesser" Guardsmen. He's the pinacle of what the Guardians can hope to achieve.

I also want to see his origin (something yet to be explored) and just where exactly he came from and how he came to be the leader of the Praetorian Guard.

Was he a member of a race of Gladiator-level beings? Is there more of his kind out there, or is he the last of his kind?

He's lived for thousands of years, and is possibly immortal.

-How long has he been a Praetorian?
-How many Emperor's has he served?
-Why is his loyalty so strong?
-Has he ever refused an order from the Emperor?
-How does the Shi'ar keep him under their rule?
-Is there a way to stop him should he ever turn on them?

I also want to see him interact in a more personal setting with other Guardsmen.

-How does his duty effect his relationship with the telepathic beauty Oracle?
-How does he train the Guard?
-Who's his most trusted leuitenant?

Smasher-
He's my next favourite Guardsmen, as I like his powerset and his attitude. I'd like to see him as Gladiator's right-hand-man, and a fierce drill-sargeant who is responsible for training the new recruits.
I also want to see him shine as a powerhouse in his own right. My favourite scene involving him was when Lilandra told him to head to Earth and warn the X-Men about Cassandra Nova, and as he was the only one who could survive a deep-space jump directly to Earth from their position, he was basically fired at Earth like a missile and crash landed like a meteor in a farm-field.
"Take me to your leader." he murmurs, still smoldering from the impact of reentry, directing his query to a dairy cow.
"Moo." says the cow.

His personality seems more "everyman" to me, and would allow for some nice dialogue between him and the very formal Gladiator and the Royal family.

Starbolt-
He could be the teams beserker. A living star with a bloodlust for battle, he would be very hard to contain if he ever went completly nuts.
His power is so potent that when he isn't being used on missions, he is kept in a chamber that keeps his power-levels in check.
The chamber could be a temple dedicated to the worship of the Super-Guardian, much like the worship of a sports star or celebrity, only a lot more formal and sophisticated.
All Super-Guardians have similar temples of worship, and they each perform different functions. Starbolt's is to keep his powers in check and to heal his mind (like meditation) to keep his rage in check, as the thermo-nuclear energies that his body houses make his mind increasingly unstable.

Without this healing chamber, he would go mad and lose control of his massive solar energies and vapourise all life on the planet.

Earthquake-
He'd be more of a solitary creature, living underground for most of the time, where he feels at one with the planet.

Kind of weird and querky due to his lack of interaction with other people, he has a strange sense of humour, and an almost child-like temper when he gets angry (think of an angry E.T. who can create earthquakes at will).

Has been caught talking to rocks and statues as if they were alive, and sometimes creates whole "families" or animated rock figures to converse with.

Not many Guardsmen like him or want him around, but veterans like Gladiator and Oracle are sympathetic and understanding towards him, and trust him whole heartedly as a reliable combatant. They are his only real friends.

Mentor-
The greatest strategic mind in the Shi'ar Empire, hands down. If the Guard need a plan of action, or a mystery solved, or technology fixed, or basically any kind of strategy, he's the guy to go to.
I'd like to see a more sinister side to him, since he's basically the Shi'ar's top intelligence agent, and knows every dirty secret they have. Noone knows more about Shi'ar weaknesses and flaws than Mentor, with perhaps Oracle being the close second.
I'd also like to see him as a martial arts master, along the lines of Karnak rather than Iron Fist. His awesome analytical skills allow him to see the weak points in all things.
One moment, he could have the trust of the entire empire in his hands, but the next minute he could quite as easily use all that knowledge to his own ends.

Hussar-
A true warrior woman of the highest order. She would eat Amazons for breakfast. Her fighting skills are legendary on her home planet, being a veteran of dozens of wars and hundreds of battles during her long life.

She craves battle, and actively seeks out superior opponents to give her a challenge.

Having betrayed the team before, she is the least trusted member of the Super-Guardians, but fights hard to regain her position and standing among the Shi'ar's Elite.

I'd like to see her start at the bottom and work her way to the top, training alongside the new recruits. It'd be cool to see the new recruits fear and respect towards her, as well as the senior Guardsmen and trainers watching her road to redemption (all the while knowing that she's one of the best of all time, and it's merely a formality and right of passage for her to regain her status.)

Even some of the trainers learn a few things from this uber-warrior as she runs rings around the other recruits.

Oracle-
She doesn't need much of a touch-up/re-imagining as she is pretty much fine the way she is.
The Guard's top telepath and telekinetic, she is an invaluable asset to the team. Gladiator's love, and third in command of the Super-Guardians (behind Gladiator and Smasher).
She is the mother figure of the team, and the most respected female in the Empire behind Lilandra and Deathbird.
Reserved and in control of her emotions, she is incredibly strong (personality wise) and doesn't take shit from anyone, even Gladiator.
Her telepathy gives her unbridled access to the deepest darkest secrets of the Royal Family and her fellow Guardsmen, making her very dangerous politcally and emotionally.

Manta-
She's a cold blooded monster. No emotions. She is like a robot in her personality and feelings, with apparently nothing effecting her emotionally whatsoever.
She holds just about everyone in contempt, and loathes serving the Empire and following orders. But she does so anyway, as fighting the enemies of the Empire gives her a purpose, and she feels she has nothing better to do.

Gladiator-

His cousin, Xenith, is still around as well. She has the same powers, so he isn't the only one of his kind.

-How does his duty effect his relationship with the telepathic beauty Oracle?

Oracle is married to Tempest/Flashfire (or at least they were in the Inhumans series)

I always liked Commissar Ibram Gaunt... oh, you mean the X-Men Imperial Guard, not the Warhammer 40K Imperial Guard.

In that case, Gladiator is probably my favourite - mostly because of that iconic mohawk.

Warstar-

I like the idea of Warstar, especially the little B'nee. He's the "driver", basically the brain to C'cil's brawn.
The relationship between the two would be fun to explore. B'nee, IMO, should be highly energetic and erratic. C'cil should be the lumbering, slow-witted behemoth who follows B'nee's direction.
They remind me of the ultimate odd-couple. B'nee constantly getting annoyed and frustrated by the dumb C'cil, always scolding the big lug and screeching at him in their almost incomprehensible language ( lots of bzzzt's and cliks and high pitched squeeks).
B'nee is a deadly little bastard in his own right, having the ability to create bio-electric blasts to fry his enemies. He's a little psychopath who delights in killing foes by frying them until they are nothing but scorched corpses. He does this with a high-pitched shrill of laughter, which is disturbing to anyone who watches this.
C'cil on the other hand, simply smashes who B'nee tells him to. He doesn't communicate with anyone but B'nee, and should B'nee become injured or incapacitated, C'cil goes into war-mode.
He will smash anything and anyone to protect B'nee, even his own teammates.
His strength and firepower are a match for the most powerful Guardsmen (except Gladiator), and once he goes into war-mode, there is absolutly no stopping him until he has protected or recovered B'nee, or he is destroyed.

Titan-
I love the giant characters. I just think it's a cool power. So simple and effective.
Titan is a veteran of the Guard, and a major celebrity on his homeworld as well as throughout the Empire.
Popular among his teammates and the authorities, he's a true jock of the team (all muscle and good-looks and not much brains) and quite popular with the ladies.
His strength and durability is second to Gladiator, and slightly above Smasher and Warstar, but he lacks firepower and natural flight capabilities.
He can fly with his standard Guard issue Anti-gravity device, but only when he's at normal height. It can't carry him when he's at his full height.
His size and strength gives him a sense of confidence bordering on arrogance and over-confidence, thinking he can squash any opposition no matter how big a threat they are.
Often, Gladiator will have to pull his head in for him and slap him around to remind him of his place.
He thinks he should be the leader, but knows deep down he never will be as long as Gladiator is around, and quietly accepts his place and respects Gladiator's postion as leader, knowing that to become leader he either has to wait for Gladiator to be killed in battle (unlikely) or challenge him out-right for the position (which means one on one combat, which he knows he would surely lose).
He follows orders like a good soldier, but his ambitions and big ego don't make it easy to stomach.

Out of all these cosmic punching bags I like Warstar for the wonderful visual of having a little guy who can pop out of the big guy's shoulder blades. While Gladiator gets points for being amazingly stubborn all I can think of when I see him is that DC really needs to get Kirby's OMAC stuff back in print.

I wouldn't call the Imperial Guard a rip-off of Legion of the Super-Heroes considering Dave Cockrum contributed to DC's Legion of the Super-Heroes before going to Marvel. The Imperial Guard is a homage to the Imperial Guard.

I would like to see 12 issue maxi-series written of The Imperial Guard. The Imperial Guard is the emperor's personal guard & they have little say in what goes once the ruler says the word. I would like to see the different rulers from D'Ken, Lilandra, & Deathbird covered in this story.
