Lushed up X-Men

So I was reading some old Carol Danvers appearances and loved her drunk storyline. I think an X-Man needs to become a hardcore lush for a few years and totally hit rock bottom by being careless in battle, missing danger room sessions and possibly going on a coke benge. Who should it be?

I agree, Ms.Marvel was way better as drunk. I'd love to see an X-Man accidentally blast a comrade in batle because he or she had one to many shots of Jack Daniels. A stint in rehab that fails and then being kicked off the team would rock. Then, he or she could keep showing up for battles and messing things up. Unless it'a a new x-man. then it's all off panel, but the X-Men can talk about it still.

Another good idead would be to have some X-character who was depowered become a total alcoholic and refuse to believe he or she has truely lost his or her powers. They could run into battle like a total moron and somehow survive. Or just be depressed like Quicksilver....

Man, I want to see Kurt drunk again, like when he drove Amanda away by being a paranoid, self-pitying jerk, perched on her balcony in the rain like a gargoyle, howling at the moon (huh?). He was still perfectly lucid at that point, though, which makes me wonder what a REALLY drunk Kurt would be like. Bar fights! Puking in gutters! Biting! Wolverine having to clean up after HIM for once, apologizing for his friend's behavior. And what happens when you teleport while drunk?
It's been so long since we saw the elf's inner bad boy. Let's have him grieve his mommy in a not-so-dignified way. I vote for Drunken Elf in 2008.

Siryn definately sounds like a good choice but ultimately I went with Storm. If at some point Marvel decides to ruin her marriage to Black Panther than I could see it being a perfect setup for Storm to get wasted every night.

I should add that that issue was, if memory serves (DDM or someone, if I'm off, correct me, please!) part of a slow-burn character arc Claremont had going for him at the time, although I didn't think of it that way until recently.

I think it started when he was appointed leader in Storm's absence. His confidence started to topple because he didn't feel he could live up to the task. He had been comfortable in his jokester role for so long. He also started having a crisis of faith due to encountering either the Beyonder or some other god-like being (this particular part is kind of hazy to me). The question being, if this man has the power of God, does God really exist? Since his faith is probably his biggest source of strength, he starts to crumble at this.

Then The Beyonder sweeps all the X-men away and leaves only Kurt behind. That's when Uncanny X-men #204 occurs. He tries to escape his problems by drinking, he lashes out at Amanda and this causes him to lose another support in his life, as Amanda decides she's had enough of his crap and leaves.

He dives into swashbuckling as a distraction, saves the day and the princess and walks off with a big grin on his face. I've had some problems with accepting this before, because it seemed to me like that was supposed to be the end of his problems, although it was actually pointed out by Judith Rassendyll at the end of the story that his approach didn't seem very healthy.

However, I realized later that Kurt's problems HADN'T ended with that issue. It was just a way of pointing out that he had a bad way of dealing with them - by distracting himself from brooding with physical stunts and gaining confidence that way.

We later see him being over-eager and over-confident when the X-men fight Nimrod and he gets himself blasted in the process. He shows up some issues later on the street, broken down and beaten up and without the ability to teleport.
He regains his teleportation ability later, but not up to full strength.
When the Mutant Massacre happens, he's still recovering from that. I would guess that he still suffers from a desperate need to prove himself (right before they get taken to the Morlock tunnels, he 'ports to greet Wolverine and ends up falling into his arms in a heap, exhausted from the stunt. Wolverine asks him "What were you trying to prove?"), because when faced with the Marauders, he abandons all reason and ignores Logan's advice and attacks Vertigo in a way that leaves him exhausted and vulnerable to attack. Then Riptide tears into him, he's too exhausted to 'port away and BAM. Kurt's out of the game.

When he wakes up and finds the X-men are dead, one of the first things he does is be his old stupid self - by over-extending during a training session and almost getting himself killed. Kitty saves his sorry tail and chews him out (this is in "The sword is drawn" - the lead-in to Excalibur.)

Here's where the rebuilding begins, because Kurt now finds himself in a situation where he can't act like that anymore - he has to grow up, or his friends will suffer from it. Excalibur needs a leader and Braddock isn't up to the task. It's notable that Kurt is crippled for a good part of the run - his teleportation is very limited and then Braddock breaks his leg. Thus, he can no longer escape from his issues by swashbuckling.

The rest is history.
