A catgal from a race of skunk people?! She must then be a mutant mephisitoid ! But cats and skunks are not in the same line of evolutionary descent! Well, it did work for Henry McCoy, since after all, cats are also definitely not in the direct line of evolutionary descent of human beings!

Well she is an alien so .. I dont think you can apply secondary human mutation to her. Cats are sexier anyway.

Well I've had experience with both and I can tell you that Skunks are definitely sexier.
And they're into some real freaky ****.

she's had a cat-like appearance for well over ten years now. it's nothing new. i think pacheco might have been the first to redesign her in the starjammers' mini from the mid-90s.
But she's named for Madame Hepzibah! She ought to look like a skunk.

You don't know about the Technarch mutant Warlock and the Skrull mutant team Cadre K? Terrans are not the only race that have mutants! As they say in King of the Hill: What has the MTV done to you fanboys?!

Yeah, as if that makes everything right. And at least her ears used to actually looked feline, on top of her head, and not elven, on the side of her head ( like humans ) . Oh, and Carlos Pacheco simply dyed her all-white, but otherwise she still looked the same with ears on the top of her head and a long bushy skunk-like tail ( this can be excused to simple feminine aesthetic preferences ) .
On her last appearance pre-Brubaker in that Starjammers LS, her ears had mutated to look fish/amphibian/reptile like, triple-lobe style! If that is in canon, was that the transitional stage in the migration of her ear position?!

Yes, humans are not the only race or species to have mutants. The point is that she is of an alien species. How do we know that all of Hepzibah's people don't look like she does.
It seems kinda daft to be saying 'She must be a mutant because she's both like a skunk AND a Cat!!!!!' when the likelihood of there even being cats or skunks on her planet is incredibly slim. Not every world is made up of the same types of creatures. To expect that would be incredibly naive. To apply the species which evolved on earth to ever world is ridiculous.
Different planets - entirely different species. How do you know she evolved from cats or skunks? That's an assumption in itself. To assume that, furthermore, that is a sign of mutation? It's jumping to a very very tenuous conclusion.
In order for you to ascertain that it was a mutation you'd have to compare her to the rest of her species. Can you do that? Why would you even bother?

But who cares if she's cat, skunk, armadillo????
She's fabulous & brings some much needed mammalian-grooviness to the team!

That's really rather my point. Trying to claim she's some kind of mutant is lame, with a secondary mutation, is lame. You don't need to be a mutant to be an X-Man. Why try to find a way of making her one.

It occurred to me - I've watched Star Trek, after all. Why, if that's not an indication that Man will spend his spacefaring time punching out bad guys and making out with hot alien babes and seducing them with killer lines like "On Earth, we call this kissing...", I don't know what is! ;)

Hey, Liefeld would have done very little except make her look anorexic and give her tiny feet (and maybe a ludicrously large space-gun). Give the man SOME credit ;)

Plus, she was a skunk person...plus her name, original look, and alian race are all plays on Skunk...not cat. So you know...chill out...or know what you are talking about at least.

According to the "OHOTMU" 1983. Issue #6 (Alien Races) The Mephitisoids are characterized as Humanoids with feline characteristics.
From Wikipedia
Hepzibah:
As a member of the Mephisitoid race, Hepzibah's features resemble that of a humanoid cat, with her fur having the colors and markings of an earth skunk. She was originally apparently a homage to Miss Mam'selle Hepzibah from the comic strip, Pogo, but her character was later changed to a more catgirlesque appearance.
Miss Mam'selle Hepzibah:
Though not as well-known as other fictional skunks, Miss Mam'Selle Hepzibah was popular enough to inspire an homage by author Chris Claremont in the Marvel Comic series The Uncanny X-Men. A humanoid skunk-woman named Hepzibah of the Starjammers would prove to be a returning character to the title (though the skunk aspect of her character would eventually be dropped in favor of her becoming a catgirl). Fifi La Fume from Tiny Toon Adventures may also be based on her, considering the strip was in the middle of a brief syndication revival at the time Tiny Toon Adventures premiered.
There I hope this helps the "is she... Or is she not" debate.

Regardless of what the handbook says, the name Mephitisoid is also a reference to skunks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mephitis_%28genus%29).
Pach!

I think is is a reference to Mephisto. Hepzibah should look like him.
Also cats and skunks are easily confused.

The actual answer is: an artist decided to change it. Deal with it.

Cute:rolleyes: But, Cats mark their territory by spraying urine in order to deposit pheromones. Pheromones are substances produced animals to serve as a form of chemical communication. In cats, several different pheromones are secreted by different regions of the body. By signaling to other cats they affect a number of behaviors, including attracting a mate.
Skunks (Mephitis mephitis) are part of the family of mustelids, which are the nearest family to felidae, including the domestic housecat (Felis catus).
Thus, "Mephitisoid" in reference to an otherworldly creature/being can be a cat. The handbook is not wrong.

No, Mephitisoid is a reference to the genus Mephitis, which ONLY includes skunks. Regardless of what she is now, Hepzibah was intentionally created as a skunk-like character--not a cat.

And next you'll tell me that the 1983 edition of the "OHOTMU" was wrong, AGAIN. Stop reaching just to be right. These are comics you know. What is printed first is what is. Anything changes after the fact is RetCon. And, some RetCons have their place and have to be respected if it is indeed printed in the pages. Show me where it is printed... Anywhere... In any X-Title... That she is of a "Skunk" like race/family and I, will gladly conceide.

Dude, you were the one reaching with the whole "cats have pheremones and are related to skunks therefore Mephistoid is a reference to cats" shtick. That's reaching. Also, handbooks are inaccurate all the time, and I don't have to point to any printed page that says she's of a skunk-like race. Her name and the name of her race tell me it's so. It's called allusion. On top of that, she was originally drawn as a skunk-like humanoid. Also, I don't need you to concede. You're wrong even if you don't.

Lets talk about Hepzibah's ability to instantly be accesorized and fabulous. Uncanny X-Men 493, she appears in panel hissing and looking quite scandalous. Next thing you know she's leapt out a window, with a head band, thigh high healed boots, Earrings, jeans and a fashionable top, all while having perfect hair. AWESOME! But is this ability more like a Cat or a Skunk?
