View Full Version : Trying to identify a comic

Hi,
I am trying to identify a comic/graphic novel that I read about ten years ago.
The main character was male and wore a helmet like the one Billy the Cat used to wear in the Beano. This was the only superhero type bit of costume he wore.
The artwork was very simple but sophisticated line drawing and there wasn't really much plot - nothing really seemed to happen, it was all implied. At least I think it was cos I can't really remember very much about it.
A nice man in a comic shop seemed to think it was probably from a Vertigo comic. Any help identifying this would be much appreciated as it's driving me mad not being able to remember what it's called, and I'd really like to get hold of a copy and read it again.
Thanks
Tony

What does a "helmet like Billy the Cat used to wear in the Beano" look like?

See attached.
That said, it doesn't ring any bells with me.

Are you sure it wasn't a dream or a trip?
That plot outline would seem to suggest so.

Kinda sounds a little like 'Mazing Man. He was DC but not Vertigo. I thought it was a great series. He wore a helmet, anyway.

The only thing I can think of is The Leopard from Lime Street from Buster comic which has since been reprinted in bootlegs and fanzines. Maybe it was one of these that you read?

Yeah, that does sound likely -- simple and sophisticated did describe Stephen DeStefano's work, and Maze's "adventures" were low-key, sitcom-type affairs.

Why?
Why are you looking to read it again? It doesn't seem like a very good read, certainly not one you'd want to read twice.
I just searched amazon to see if anyone that bought something related to the beano bought anything like what you describe, and, unfortunately, they didn't.
Was it British?
Was this it?

I want to read it again because bits of it has stuck with me for all this time, and I remember at the time thinking how good it was.
Gosh, it's been awhile since I was here.

Yeah,
at least 75% certain it wasn't either :-).
I think it was British, the artwork was all B&W, and there was some secret government agency who had some weird scientific equipment set up in a factory, doing some kind of secret and dangerous experiments.
It was all quite serious, and there was a female character who I think was a bit in love with the main character.
still driving me mad not being able to remember!

Sounds a bit more like it was something from one of the British anthology comics, such as Warrior or 2000AD (which are loosely linked to Vertigo, through writers like Moore starting off in them)...
I can't think of a specific title it could have been tho... the only British black & white comic i can think of featuring a main character with a helmet is Strontium Dog, and that wouldn't be it... try researching 2000AD tho...
