Bah, that was supposed to be my post. Sorry for posting it under your name, Mags.

Anyway, nice statue. Too bad those things are always too pricey for my taste, but at least they released those neat looking Wonder Woman action figures. I'm not even a big WW fan and I think they look great.

Ditto. I'll never pay for that statue, but I do have all four of the wondy figures. :D

Also I meant to comment earlier... If that comic cover is a nod toward a plan to retell that old silver age story where Diana gets turned into a lizard woman I'm totally gonna egg Gail's house.

And I can't wait to see both interior previews for Trinity, and covers (by Pacheco). Should be fantastic.

To salvage her very existence, she must ally herself with the legendary Beowulf and another fearsome warrior from DC's past!

Please tell me they're going to use the version of Beowulf from the short-lived '70s series (http://comics.org/covers.lasso?SeriesID=2214) -- the one who fought Dracula and flying saucers. That would be too cool.

And, given that "one demon hand" thing she's got going on, could the other warrior be Claw the Unconquered (http://comics.org/covers.lasso?SeriesID=2215)?

Can Starfire (http://comics.org/covers.lasso?SeriesID=2334) be far behind? You may have finally found a way to get me to pick this book up. ;-)

Okay, didn't notice those. I never liked the heels on Wonder Woman; felt so impractical for her character, plus felt like it was there to emphasize on her sexuality. But other than that? Kick ass statue.

I'm not one of those people who gets upset about superheroes wearing high heels (I say being able to kick ass in high heels just makes them more impressive), but I never understood Diana in high heels. They didn't have pumps in ancient Greece.

Not to mention that she can fly. So the argument that they aren't convenient doesn't really ... erm ... fly.

Well, like I said, being able to kick ass in high heels is impressive. I wear high heels every day and sometimes I find it difficult to walk in them. If someone can pull off a roundhouse kick in them, more power to her.

That said, high heels are impractical for anyone, anywhere. Ocassionally, everyone needs to stand on rocky terrain, or walk over a grate, or even just stand for long periods of time. Being able to fly doesn't exempt Wonder Woman from that.

Sure it does. She can glide over a grate or rocky terrain. Not to mention that she doesn't have muscles like we do. She's super-strong.

If we were talking the practicality for a regular person, that would be one thing. But I can't see heels being an impediment to someone who can fight Superman in space. :)

BAM. Nail on the head.
This is what bugs me. High Heels are not a pracitical choice for someone who engages in heavy physical activity so even from a modern day thought basis it doesn't make sense. But when you take into account that this outfit was designed by people who first had their nation founded centuries ago, long before high heels were invented? It just doesn't make any sense at all.

I don't get the love for the heels on Wonder Woman. I know how people like them in general, that I understand, but I don't get why Wonder Woman should be wearing them.

It depends on how they're drawn. And I don't personally think she *should* have them. Just speaking for myself, I'm not against them or for them. It just depends on the art, I suppose.

It would be funny in that they might make her more self-conscious, since she would be like 6'4" with heels. Like Maria Sharapova complained when she shot up from about 6'0" to about 6'2", now she puts on 3-4" heels, and she's ready to play in the NBA. :)

But, AFAIC, either way is fine. I just have never gotten the "they're not practical" argument when we are talking about someone who can not only fly, but destroy buildings with her fist, etc. That's my only issue, really.

I think it goes to the strength of the statue in conveying a powerful character when one doesn't automatically notice something like the heels. I certainly didn't catch it at first glance because I thought the pose beautifully captured the character.

I don't get the love for the heels on Wonder Woman. I know how people like them in general, that I understand, but I don't get why Wonder Woman should be wearing them.easy, because she can do it backwards in them. ;)

It's just an aesthetic choice isn't it? and personally I'm easy on the subject, flats look good, heels look good and I'm fine seeing her in both. So long as she's got the stripey boots I'll be happy.

As far as supers are concerned I find arguments for and against costume details based on practicality to be based on very shaky ground.

I don't understand high heels on comic women in general. Real world women wear them to increase the length of their legs. Comic women already have inhumanly long legs. They simply don't need high heels. Combat boots look great on those comic women who wear them for that reason. Their legs are longer in flats than any real world woman in high heels. So visually it works just fine.

High heels do not enhance the lenght of womenīs legs.
They are used to tweak their posture, making the figure more erect and protruded in key sensual areas.

I donīt think theyīre very practical, especialy in more down-to-earth heroines like Batgirl or Huntress who are still bound by things like gravity.
And I donīt think Diana would wear them.

But they are visualy appealing, so I can understand their use on other characters.

High heels do not enhance the lenght of women´s legs.Of course they give the illusion of longer legs.

They are used to tweak their posture, making the figure more erect and protruded in key sensual areas.also very true.

And I don´t think Diana would wear them. She must be mysteriously attracted to them in some way though because every so often you'll see her wearing them ;)

But they are visualy appealing, so I can understand their use on other characters. Also a good enough reason for Wonder Woman to wear them in my view, she's supposed to look great after all.

I gotta ask, after having this heels-v-flats conversation for two pages, in which we've all basically just repeated ourselves several times. Is there anything to accomplish by saying it again?

LOL
Don´t get me wrong, I´m not for or against them.

I´m not in the camp defending that high heels compromise her fighting capability since she´s not bound by gravity, she´s at least a class 100 in strenght and I´m actualy attracted by the idea of her being able to do everything Superman does, only backwards and wearing high heels (anyone knows where that came from? :D

When I say that I don´t think she´d wear them, it´s only because
1) I don´t know if they had them back in Themyscira
2) High Heels can be a fashion statement but also a male ideal of female beauty - which is something I don´t think she´d willingly conform to-

In practice, though..... I pretty much don´t care either way. :p

Iīm not in the camp defending that high heels compromise her fighting capability since sheīs not bound by gravity, sheīs at least a class 100 in strenght and Iīm actualy attracted by the idea of her being able to do everything Superman does, only backwards and wearing high heels (anyone knows where that came from? :DI guess most here know it was Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, she had to do everything Fred did, but backwards in high heels. Greg Rucka had Superman make a reference to it when talking to Diana during his run - which led me to look it up at the time.

When I say that I donīt think sheīd wear them, itīs only because
1) I donīt know if they had them back in Themysciraumm, no idea about Themyscira but it appears heels were around in ancient Greece.

2) High Heels can be a fashion statement but also a male ideal of female beauty - which is something I donīt think sheīd willingly conform to-

In practice, though..... I pretty much donīt care either way. :pMe neither, in fact I like to see both, just for variety's sake. On your male ideal point, yes a woman in heels looks great but most of the women I know love their collections of high heels (and acquiring more of them) too much for it to be just that. :)

Chiroptera

Heels were around in ancient greece. Just not the pumps and stilletos seen on heroines in todays comics.

They had tall wooden full heels, but none of the pointy tipped heels we see today. That's my biggest beef with the heels. They don't add up with the notion that her costume was designed on Themyscira.

I don't particularly mind the heels myself. Personally I think she should wear the heels when she's presenting at big events and stuff.

Opening a children's hospital? Heeled boots.
Guest of honor at a charity gala? Heeled boots.
Fighting of a horde of rampaging kill-bots? Flat soled boots.

Diana's a thinking woman, it makes senses that she'd want the sexy high-heeled boots for when she wants to look her best. It would make sense for her to want to flats for when she wants the most freedom of movement while on her feet.

Now whether or not her hopes work out is another story. After all we do often see the villains crashing events like gala's and hospital openings.
This would make it so that there would be times to show off how she can fight off that horde of rampaging kill-bots while still wearing high heels, but it wouldn't throw off the idea that Diana considers the warrior's concerns of what to wear when she KNOWS she's going into battle. What she where's when she doesn't know she is going into battle is a whole nother story. :D
