I'm getting my 7-inch Hellboy ready for molding, some minor details and it's ready. I need to make new molds for my dear old original Hellboy bust too - they were the first molds I ever made are and they were destroyed from all the experiments with plaster and resin. I don't have a decent copy of the bust myself...
So, I thought I'll change it a little bit. Sun icon always looked a little weird to me. Also, I never really liked the neck area - way too boring and plain compared to pretty cool head. So I carved big parts out and sculpted a new neck. It looks like I really learned something in the last 1.5 years, as I like it much more now. Of course, it's nothing like real anatomy, but it looks cool. And I've never seen demon's anatomy books...
:)
Here it is, with the old version, with unfinished new Sun and unbaked right side:

Better pictures when it's ready...
It looks crazy cool Ivar; keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing the new pictures.

Thanks! Actually, it looks much better from the behind and profile too, as now it has those big shoulder muscles defined and there are angular lines going up the back of the neck. I'm trying to get better picturs in diffused daylight when it's baked. It's very hard to get good pictures from this clay, details are just not visible...
PS: it's funny to think that I have deep night here, rhboyd has still yesterday and Bandit 37 has almost noon...

Exactly, what clay do you use?
The clay I have looks nothing like yours baked or unbaked....
I would really like to get inot this stuff, but the clay I have is crumbly and dry. Odd, considering its sculpy.

I'm using Cernit and sometimes Fimo. They don't sell Sculpey here, so I haven't seen or tried it. This bust is made from white Cernit, I baked it tens of times, so it's pretty dark now.
White Cernit is somehow like milk, it has some translucency, so it's hard to see details or to photograph it. Recently I got different Cernit, white opaque, it's very different. I mixed it with black 20:1 and got very good grey.
Cernit is usually very crumbly too when out of the plastic wrap, it's impossible to sculpt with it. It needs kneading before using, then it's ok.

Newbie here, great to see some sculpting in this style. I've been slowly working on 9 inch action figure versions of Hellboy and company for a bit.

Ivar,
Is it really soft after kneading?
I'd like to try to carve something out of clay, maybe if I bake the sculpy halfway then try carving it.... IDK. But I will try almost anything here.
Creativity overload!
Ivar_L
02-19-2007, 04:39 AM
Cernit (I'm using) will be soft, but not too soft. Cernit is a weird clay, it gets softer with warming. Sometimes, when I can't make sharp enough details, I let it stay and continue next day, when it's much harder again. Don't think Sculpey is like this...
If you want to carve, just bake it. For a knife it will still be soft, like a very hard soap or something. Not like stone or plastic.

You guys inspired me, weeks ago, to get cracking on some lovely Hellboy stuff to complement the marvelous toys.
I'm not much of a sculptor, but I followed the advice you guys had to offer. The first things I did were a couple of skulls... a regular one and a dessicated one from "Conqueror Worm".
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/KellyGreen/skulls.jpg
And then, flush with moderate success, I made a toy-sized Amazing Screw-On Head. Behold!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/KellyGreen/screwonhead.jpg
I built a stand for him, from his first appearance.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/KellyGreen/screwonhead2.jpg
Different view... his screw is hollow, and I build a little notch that he can be placed on.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/KellyGreen/screwonhead3.jpg
I'm not sold on the paint jobs and the sculpts are a bit rough but I had a lot of fun doing them.
K.
wow, nice job on Screw On Head!!! I've got one in the works, too. I plan on using a wooden artist's doll for the body.

Here's my first attempt at sculpting him. I used one of those plastic anchors for the screw part, still have to paint it. I'm going to adapt it to an artist's mannequin for his body, and give him all sorts of interchangeable weapons.

oh, well. nevermind then, if stygian says it sucks then it must.
I tried a photoshop manipulation to see what he'd look like without the big smile...which is more a perspective thing I think. But it lost the sense of caricature and life that yours has.
I love the oversized horns especially. But the belt is awesome because of the attention to detail. Not just stuff like the keys but Weird Tales and Bat Boy stories? You know your Hellboy.

TBolt, I meant no offense. I was just making an observation. As an artist myself I realized a long time ago (painfully at times) that we are all open to suggestions, comments, etc. I was just offering an opinion.
I don't do the sculpy stuff and I admire those of you who do. Keep up the great work Bolt as I'd love to see your ongoing efforts.

As a person who shaves, I'd made the lines in the beard vertical...
:)
And maybe not so round hooves. This is not criticism, since I started sculpting I just can't see "anything Hellboy" without analyzing it...
I think you should take some photos more from the left side ot the figure, so that sigar doesn't point directly to the camera and cover the face.
Really great details on the belt!

I tried the texture of the soul patch both ways, and it looked better going the "wrong" way. The hooves are a functional part of the figure and help him stand, they needed the extra bulk. Sorry about the same angle, I never noticed that. I purposely gave him a slight grin, a nod to Ron Perlman's performance. The figure is an attempt to be an amalgam of the 3 media versions, movie, cartoon and Mignola.
Next up is a what if Frankenstein's Monster was employed by the BPRD.

Hi,
some new pictures from me!
I spent SO much time with the molds trying to get them right that it's just ridiculous. I almost haven't sculpting anything, all the free time in last months went to plaster, silicone and all the problems I had. Now it looks like I FINALLY have some decent molds!
Hellboy bust was my first finished bigger sculpt and my first try at mold making. I made several mistakes there, so the only painted resin copy I have so far is far from perfect. There are many micro bubbles everywhere and they are still visible through primer and acrylic paint. So, when I got my modified base out from the new mold today and it was almost perfect, I was really happy!
Today was a big casting day for me, so here are some photos:
Here's my modified Hellboy bust's resin copy. Bust and base are separate now, so there are two molds.
Hellboy -
face is the same, but the neck area is totally different. In original version there was absolutely no details.
Base -
I filled the resin with some stones, so ca 1/2 of it is plastic-like resin, 1/2 is stones. It's really nice and heavy - ca 650 grams, so when painted, it will feel not like plastic at all. Dimensions are 6.5x6.5x9 cm. It's almost the same as the old version with some corrections here and there. Completely new detail is the Sun icon. It's much better than the ugly original and looks much more like the one in the comics.
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/2822/hellboycastvol203600mw9.jpg
And now some words about my other Hellboy sculpt:
Base - Cernit original, resin copy and 3 resin copies with stones. Diameter is 9 cm, stone version's weight is 100 grams. I love this base and it just needs some more characters to stand on it!
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/1140/base01600pz3.jpg
Mold for tail:
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/4960/moldtail03600tb8.jpg
Mold for legs with resin copy inside:
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/8149/moldlegs05600ft8.jpg
As I wrote, I haven't sculpted anything recently. I'll try to finish 7" Hellboy's coat and make the last mold as soon as possible...

You nailed the likeness. Nice job and especially in the fact that you actually used a figure from the Comic Hellboy line (superior to Marvel Legends IMHO). I have been finding that LJ makes for a wonderful base for any great number of Mignola fueled customs. You should get your ASOH together with the one that Iron Cow did and see if they can't produce some sort of superior offspring. With his articulation and your sculpt it could take over ze world! here are a few more of the hand:
Okay, we're all about keeping it real here, right? So no feelings hurt when I critique this custom job, hopefully? Alright, that out of the way.
Okay, those horns are way too big! I say this with 'love' and a sincere desire to help you improve the job you've done here. The RHOD- great! The horns- so gigantic they are approaching cartoony proportions. My recommendation is, dial back the horns a few inches. Maybe use some paint and putty to get that bent back shape you'll inevitably lose when trimming the height. That way Hellboy won't look like he should be falling on his face everytime he lifts his head.
Hopefully this critique doesn't come across as harsh. As a customizer (on occasion) myself, I feel your pain in trying to get things just right. You're almost there. Just keep going a little further and you'll get there.

Thanks for all the kind words about my Zombie sculpt! I'll try to post some more stuff sooner rather than later.
What did you sculpt it in? I looks like Chavant.
This started out as an experiment with paper clay- specifically a brand called "Hearty" that I found at a hobby store. It works pretty well for the torn and dried-out flesh textures, but it sucked for trying to get a smoother finish on the coat! That's when I switched to my trusty Super Sculpey firm grey, but I'm still having trouble getting it to blend into the paper clay smoothly. I'm hoping that after a few coats of paint and some more sanding it will take on a uniform look.

Ah yes, I remember you mentioned this when you started it. Is it the same stuff you made Morna's skull pendant out of?
Since seeing your piece I've been inspired to set my sculpting studio back up again (it was given over to other projects for a while) and I've started back on some old sculpts. Unfortunately the Sculpey has gone a little hard and cracked on them-- it's been that long. :p Oh well, they're not a total loss, but a bit of scraping off and reapplying of fresh sculpey with a breath of vaseline seems to be working. Hopefully I'll have something to post photos of next week.

Hi all,
yesterday I finished moulding final (4th) part of my Hellboy sculpt. Here's test copy with all it's flaws, with DC's Batman statue and from different angles :
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/9092/hellboybatman01600al0.jpg
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/9526/hellboybw1stcast800zi8.jpg
It's in 4 parts - base, legs/belt, tail and body/coat. Body's mould was one I finished yesterday. It was my most complicated mould so far and a major headache, as I didn't want cut off the hands - several air vents, very small pouring hole at the bottom end of the coat, complicated plaster cover etc.
I will think about it for a couple of days. Maybe I should cut off hands after all and make separate box moulds for them and body... This way there's less things to go wrong in casting and it will be easier to paint...
But overall, I'm pretty happy with it. As always, there are details I'd like to change, but it's time to move forward to new sculpts.
Thanks for looking!

Hey guys.
I come across this thread when I bought some Super Sculpey the other day. Something I've wanted to do for aaages but never have.
Anyway I'm a fan of Hellboy and when I saw this I figured I'd have to have a crack at doing something HB related. I did this HB bust, but kinda didn't want to make it look too comic HB or too movie HB, so it's sort of my own take. I hope that's not overly sacrelicious!
The first thing I sculpted was a little Cthulhu pendant thing...then I did a really small conan bust just to play around a bit, and this Hellboy bust is only the 3rd thing I've done. So be gentle haha.
Anyway I figured I'd come and post some photos. There's a lot of roughness to it, but I didn't spend a huge amount of time on it. I did it over a few hours today.
Anyway, any thoughts, critiques, hints, tips etc are more than welcome. There's some amazing work on here, so I feel quite humbled posting this haha.
My usual form of artwork is line art and more surreal dark art which you can see some of at http://saltyart.deviantart.com
OK here are some photos of the bust. I haven't painted it yet, it's just been baked.
Enjoy!

Hey LoJo, that's awesome! I've been thinking of doing the same thing in scale with the Mezco figures using the actual figure. Might I suggest putting this on the base:
Roger B. CA. 1500 - D. 2006 Great Men Are Not Always Wise - The Book of Job XXXII, Verse 9
It's from the scene where Johann says goodbye to Roger. Perhaps as some sort of grave marker?

I'm just finishing a Sculpey project, an art mask intended to hang on the wall and be handled gently. It couldn't be made as one piece so I've different pieces for the hair, eyebrows, mouth, teeth, etc. One important piece broke, but in only two bits that are fairly easy to realine along the split. What glue should I use? I have Elmer's Glue-All and a hot glue gun. Which is better for the job? Should be searching out for something moderate between those two extremes of glue-dom?
Sorry if this has already been covered in this lengthy and inspiring thread.

I didn't know where else to put it, so here's my Hellboy Nutcracker: The Crack Of Doom!
http://www.phobe.com/crap/nut_sm.jpg
There's another pic or two at my nascent Hellboy-crafty flickr group (http://www.flickr.com/photos/hellboarder/sets/72157603520251277/)
I modified a regular soldier-type wooden nutcracker (he's about a foot tall, $4 at Rite Aid, woot) by prying his hat off, ripping his drum and drumsticks off (ouch), and using a bit of Magic Sculp (http://www.magicsculp.com/) (this stuff is the shiz, I will never use Sculpey again) for the hand, tail, cigar, etc. Not some of my finest painting - and his sideburns make him look a little like Emo Phillips - but what the hey. Beware, Nuts of Evil!
After the holidays I'm gonna make a Lobster Johnson one, but that's gonna be tough since the nutcrackin' mechanism goes right through where the big logo would be on the jacket. Hmmm...
I worship at the altar of your creativity. I love the shadow box too.

I've got a couple of BP.R.D. projects on the go. The first one is the horrid little Noh monkey. He's roughly to scale of the Mezco Hellboy figures... I hope to match him to a Daimio sculpt at some point.
I did some turnarounds for him:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/KellyGreen/nohmonkeytemplate.jpg
He took a couple of hours to sculpt:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/KellyGreen/nohmonkeybw.jpg
And another hour or so to paint:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/KellyGreen/nohmonkeycolor.jpg
I still need to find a proper jar for him (I'm thinking a big piece of vinyl tubing) and then I'll have to sculpt the base and the lid, and draw the rotting jar labels and glue them on. Baby steps.

Can you only reply in this section? Is this the only section i can post sculpts? I think you can post pictures of your sculpts wherever you like. For example, you can make your own art thread. I think you shoud post your images also in sub-forums where Batman fans could see them, as I'm sure many of them don't visit this Hellboy/Mignola area.
I don't know nothing about zombie superheroes, why or how or what, but your images look cool!

Wow! That Pez topper is a tiny but wonderfully bang-on Hellboy bust. Nice! The nesting dolls are a wonderful idea. I assume that you will be limited to very low relief and paint effects. This idea would lend itself well to a nesting set of some of Hellboy's Russian. Please post progress shots or final images, I'd love to see how both of the projects look when you are finished.

Man, I've been missing out on this thread. I avoid clicking on it because it reminds me painfully of the half dozen sculpts I have laying around that I never have time to work on. There is some phenomenal work in here. Ivar's technical prowess is stunning as always. Otto's customs and their settings (cool inter-dimensional portal opener thingy!) are impressive. Hi Guys, here's my first attempt at bust sculpting. It's Capt. Daimio and still pretty rough. I'm going to fill out his torso a lot more and I think I kind of jumped the gun on the base so I'll have to figure out what to do with that later.

First photo's digital background made it look somehow flat, like fridge magnet, especially base. New photos give much better view.
Some criticism too (don't think you will get much more) -
what I don't like in busts is when the character looks like some mafia victim, in decorative concrete from waist down. There are many commercial busts which look like that. If I were you, I'd try to add some thinner detail between Lobster and base, I don't know, simple rod or something. Like on Mark Newman's Poe bust -

I think it will look more elegant this way.

Okay... first off, I don't belong in here. I am by no means a sculptor. Your guys' work is ridiculous!!! And by ridiculous, I mean "freakin sweet" and "I would pay good money for it."
Anyways, here is my dilemma. I just sculpted the Agrippa Charm and posted it above. After looking at it, I decided that I wanted to try it a different way. Of course, I was taking the image from 2-D to 3-D which makes for some interesting interpretations.
I can't decide which one to display. My question is this:
Which do you like better??

I would love to get into commision work as long as I could keep sculpting the Mignola style, plus having the finances would help projects roll faster. I started the BPRD agent back in June and had planned to have kits ready by now but my progress has been prohibited by my own finances. I was contemplating Kate Corrigan as a head swap for Liz and Daimio I want to make a full figure of, or perhaps a Daimio that wears the same armor as the BPRD agents in "The Black Flame"? The Screw On head in the second pic is ready for casting but I still need to sculpt the screw as a seperate piece that attaches to the ball joint to the head. Those will actually be ready in three weeks if anyone is interested in buying one shoot me a PM.

Ugh - yeah... I got a used Kerr Ultra-Waxer about a year ago and have been getting used to the feel whenever I can. I clearly suggest one but it seems making your own tips is the way to go since only about four or five types seem to be commercially available and I haven't found everything I'd like. It's both wonderful and daunting, and I'm clearly still on my learning curve in trying to adapt the material from my clay-based background.
I'll look into 3sixty so I can compare... so far I've used a house mix from Gentle Giant and a commercial wax from Compleat Sculptor called the "azbro mix" I think - basically a blend done from a chemical sample of Hasbro's house recipe. I also have a recipe from Art Asylum but don't have a large scale double boiler so I haven't gotten into mixing yet.
People have suggested both nylon stockings stretched over a cotton-wrapped stick as a polishing tip, and a soft cloth with butane (lighter fluid) as a solvent. I've shamefully yet to try either - I plan to sculpt up a few practice objects to go about all this scientifically. ;) Right now I'm using an orange oil based solvent that's pretty generic from a jeweler supply, but it a) has a tendency to evaporate out of any plastic bottle I've put it in (causing the bottle to crush) and b) doesn't give a high polish, only really achieves a satin look, though that may change if I adjust the working temp of the wax before buffing (hmmm).
Hodgson here (my name for the fungus guy) is actually very low tech. It started out a Sculpey piece (over a tinfoil core) because I was still in wax transition and was experimenting with wax finish or hybrid sculpts - so the fingertips and some detail work is wax. The shine is just a few light dustings of Krylon Crystal Clear gloss coat which I would often do to Sculpey as a last step in mold prep.
I did do a part (an alternate Mego doll hand) in wax and found that for small surface areas if I refrigerate a rounded metal tool like a pick, loop or wedge that I could burnish the surface pretty well and the end cast turned out very slick - probably as much shine as a spray coated piece.
I've never worked with Castilene - though I know some love it. I'd heard at SDCC last year that the newer batches ordered were almost useless - I think because of a chemical change in the batch to adhere to new US import regulations, but everyone I talked to said it was awful and they weren't sure what they'd be doing to fix it once their old stock ran out. Did you have any issues with it? Or have you gone over to wax completely?

Honestly, in comparison to the wax I've switched over to Castilene(or at least the batch I had) was horrid. I couldn't get it to polish or take well to molding. 3sixty however is relatively close to Azbro and harder than old castilene from what I understand. I've been searching for a solvent like what you've mention to use with the nylon stocking approach, I was told gojo also can be used as a solvent but haven't tried it yet.

To post work in progress pics is really not that good an idea, as they usually look like c**p the next day. So, this time I'm not posting them here. If someone for some reason wants to see how far I am at the moment - I made a blog in August before our trip to Paris. I'm using it now for posting some stuff I'm interested about - photos, drawings, etc. Words there are mostly in Estonian, but I'll add some English to sculpting entries.
I'm just starting, so it's really rough...

Sweet Blog, too.

Agreed. Abe is heavy awesome-sauce, (so's HB - love the hand!) and that blog has more beautiful packed into it per square inch than I thought was possible without dehydration and vacuum bags.

I visited my friend a couple of weekends ago. His 5 years old son had some DAS clay and some mushrooms and clay+stick creatures he made from it. They asked me to sculpt Catbus for him, but it was too complicated, so I just made a little 20-minutes Totoro. :)
I already wanted to try this clay myself, to make something really fast and rough. So, I made an armature this weekend, and yesterday, after 4.5 hours of sculpting I had this:

This air hardening children's clay is nothing like polymer clays, but it was an interesting experience. This wolf actually looks better in person, almost like some old terracotta figurine... :)

Very nice Ivar. I've been appreciating the work you've shared on this forum for some time now. Thanks for posting again. Its always a pleasure. Of course, you get extra points for mentioning Miyazaki's Totoro. That must have been fun to make as well.
I imagine the task of creating a Catbus sculpture would necessitate a pretty complex armature. Would you build a right and left half and then join them together? Catbus is a great character and worthy of wider acclaim and interpretation but how could you even begin to sculpt him with all the open spaces.

Would you build a right and left half and then join them together?I'd probably do it like those small keychain figures or toy we have, with filled windows and no inside visible. It would have been quite small and fast clay figure anyway, no need to get too complicated. But for bigger Nekobus I'd make armature from wire mesh for removable roof. It's probably the only and best way, if there are plans to mould it.
The experience of making finished figure in just a few hours was great, I'd probably try it again. Just need to find what to do...

Hey, Ivar. I just noiced your new avatar. I checked your blog to see if you had updated pics of the Abe statue, but you just have the new icon. Any pics of the work in progress? The head looks awesome from what I can see. Don't leave us hangin'.

I'm working on Abe's upper body, changed the armature, so the pose is better.
Avatar image... This is the face that existed, I' don't know, for an hour or so today. At the moment I'm a little frustrated here - the more I worked on it the worse it got, so it got to the point I just couldn't fix it anymore. So, now there's nice ball of clay instead of head and I'm starting over.

Man, sorry to hear that. I'm sure it wasn't as bad as you make it sound, but your attention to detail and perfectionism is what makes your stuff... well, perfect.

Being a novice sculptor I can totally relate to that frustration!!! When i get something right I end up mashing it trying to get the next detail right. Darn it. I got the harder kind of super sculpey. The softer must be a real nightmare.
The Abe Sapien head on your avatar pic looks allright to me though Ivar. Looking forward to seeing version 2.

And Ivar, think of it: if and when you finish a head of Abe which YOU can be comfortable with, how great and cool will that be ?!
I sort of imagine both Abe and Liz for being rather tough to portray. On the now no longer existent Abe head I feel I can say it looked terrific already.
I especially like how very muscly and alive he seems - more than the Mezco figure I feel - like there's a hint of Jason Alexander in there, on top of all the Mignolan grandeur. To say Ivar, you'll be 'on the right track' even according to silly old me .
Stay positive and pleaz :biggrin:hurry up already:biggrin:!

After being inspired by the stuff here on the Hellboard i got myself a piece of Super Sculpey and started my first sculpture! Hellboy of course.
This is after perhaps three hours work. The whole thing has been redone once and the head twice. But now I think it is possible to se a resemblance to Hellboy. This is a very rough work in progress of course, and I am not expecting any loud hoots and cheers but I felt I had to share a progress pic.
Lots of fun and just as difficult as I imagined.
