View Full Version : Yup. Giffen successfully destroyed a perfectly good title (Midnighter # 17)

The Midnighter, the night's bringer of war, Mr. 1,000,000 battle scenarios in one second, the guy who already killed you before the fight started..... basically got his shit pushed in by an unpowered human.
You read right.
The man who once KICKED an airborne missile fired by a tank right back at the tank (reducing it to mere rubble).
The guy whose blocked bullets with a staff.
The guy whose fist has punched through human heads.
The guy who got his neck broken but was able to get right back up and keep fighting.
The guy who, in the past, has gone in barehanded and weaponless against whole fleets of troopers (each wielding automatic rifles) and soundly taking them all down. Single-handedly.
....Got his ass kicked by some hypnotized guy who didn't even have powers. How can you even TOUCH a man whose seen every poss- No fuck it. You guys already know how stupid the concept is.
Oh. And guess what?
You know all those implants he has? What makes him so cool?
It's all really just a tiny glowing green pill lodged in the back of his neck that can be taken out and inserted into anybody.
Everything about this title is a disgrace published media.
-Midnighter apparently leaves his "I've fought our fight in my head already" card on his front door for everyone to read (even if they're just a mailman). Either that or he can see beyond combat scenarios and into the future to where he knows who is going to ever show up to his house.
The conversations in this book don't make any damned sense:
-(Some guy sitting alone in a hotel room) "No. This one wouldn't."
-Some guy : "Enlighten me?"
Midnighter : "Last request?"
Some guy : "If you insist."
Midnighter : "You 'signed in' at town hall."
-Some guy : "I had heard that you and Anthem had... come to terms."
Midnighter : "What they don't know can hurt them."
Some guy : "And had I turned out to be a citizen passing through?"
Midnighter : "Better safe than sorry."
WTF!?
I remain concerned about not only Giffen's writing ability, but his utter disdain for anyone who enjoys comics.
I feel insulted.
Brothers, this is a very ugly black mark on the face of comic books. I fear for the reputation of comics.
We must take action. Immediately.

Wow I dropped it before that first American-flag-face-big-brother ended. Just wasn't feeling it (though Giffen often knocks 'em dead!). Glad I did. I didn't think he was on the title for good though, I thought it was just a stint. Oh well, moot point now, it looks like.

He is my favorit in WU too. Now there is no Authority,Wildcats i was looking forward to catching up to this title...
Why did they remove Ennis, he was awesome with this title.

This doesn't sound like a great book, but I've just got to ask, why do you keep reading this? I mean, there have been a ton of titles that I've loved in the past that went bad, but when that happens, I drop them. Are you going to start a new thread each month detailing how much you hate this book? Because more power to you if ranting about this makes you happy, but there are a lot of really good but underselling books that you could spend your money on instead.

...He was being worked over by a nerve toxin that should have left him a twitching heap a few seconds after first contact.
And this dude may well have been enhanced...you just don't know, because it wasn't said.
You read right.
Yeah, I did. You obviously did not.
No. That was the DOOR implant, that allows him to communicate with the Carrier and create Doors.
Seriously, did you just skim the book?
[quote]-(Some guy sitting alone in a hotel room) "No. This one wouldn't."
He's looking at his scanner which says that there are no cybernetic implants found in Midnighter's vicinity. The "this one wouldn't" line implies that Midnighter would have shielded himself/his door implant from detection.
Seriously guy, I read this issue when it first came out and I STILL remember this stuff. It isn't that difficult.
-Some guy : "Enlighten me?"
Midnighter : "Last request?"
Some guy : "If you insist."
Midnighter : "You 'signed in' at town hall."
The guy wants to know how Midnighter knew he was coming -- that is why that card was on the door. It wasn't there just in case, Midnighter had the logs from town hall, knew a new person was in town and made proper arrangements (which is also why he was waiting for him, sitting in a chair with a full body costume on).
-Some guy : "I had heard that you and Anthem had... come to terms."
Midnighter : "What they don't know can hurt them."
Some guy : "And had I turned out to be a citizen passing through?"
Midnighter : "Better safe than sorry."
See above, it is just a continuation of that conversation.

Listen man, don't blame the comic just because you don't understand some SLIGHTLY subtle story telling. Not everything has to be spelled out for you, does it? Do you need silver age exposition on EVERYTHING going on in the book? Would you prefer it if you had thought bubbles saying "I'm going to punch him now!" every time someone threw a punch?
It honestly sounds like you didn't even try.

It's a shame, it definitely had potential. A Midnighter series should have been, by definition, dark. Ah well, c'est la vie...

You don't necessarily have to buy the issue in order to read it.
Besides, threads roasting a subpar issue are infinitely more useful and interesting than a universal love-fest over a good issue.

Yes, apparently I do need exposition on EVERYTHING. Because this isn't subtle storytelling... It's not even storytelling. It's vague hinting at best.
How the hell was I supposed to understand what he meant when he was talking to himself? I still don't.
Sorry, son. Giffen is not fit mentally or talent-wise to be a writer.
It's not subtle one bit. It's a mystery. He leaves out just about everything and you're supposed to GUESS at every detail.
It's just another way of showing how lazy Giffen is and how incapable he is of shaping conversations. I'll pass.
You can't haphazardly throw together bits of a discussion and expect the reader to play connect the dots and decode wtf someone meant. It's called being a bad writer.

Can't say I'm surprised the title is being cancelled. A couple of months after Giffen took over I started thinking about dropping the title, and I'm a sucker for anything with Authority or Midnighter tie-ins.

um, I for one understood everything that went on in that issue. I have no idea what the original poster meant at all. That being said I do think that this new arc is looking to be a rather weaker one than the former. But I still think Giffen has a few tricks up his sleeve as he usually does.

People don't hold conversations like that. When was the last time you sat down with someone who had the power to kill you and spoke only in questions? Or just ALLUDED to things when you spoke?

Both Gail Simone and Cristos Gage said that Tranquility was returning and in and interview with Ben Abernathy (http://authority.herochronicle.com/abernathy.htm)
Ian: A number of readers have noticed that a lot of the current Worldstorm titles are no longer being solicited in Previews like Stormwatch, Wetworks, Tranquility, and Deathblow. Are these projects officially on hiatus? Are there plans in the works to continue any of these properties?
Ben: Yep, there's plans to continue all the books listed above, in one capacity or another (and that’s just the tip of the iceberg). I know Christos has hinted at a new StormWatch book on-line as has Gail about more Tranquility and I can confirm that both of those “rumors” are true. Also, I've noticed some chatter on the message boards about Supernatural--the "Origins" book was always meant to be a six-issue series and we have a second book in the works as I write this (with hopefully a third after that, to complete our “Winchester Trilogy”). Some big, cool things are going to be happening in 2008!

Lee wasn't responsible for what happened to Wildcats and the Authority, it was Morrison…both Gen Ha and Jim Lee can’t draw scripts that don’t exist

It is funny to think that Lee could blame any delays on ABS&R considering there was over a year between issues on that title. We all just need to accept the WildCATS and The Authority relaunches failed, act like they never happened, and start over.... yet again.

I really do have a problem with Wildcats and The Authority being abandoned. Seems to me that Morrison could have tackled those projects if he had indeed wanted to, and Wildcats didn't need Jim Lee on pencils - it could have survived with another artist so long as Morrison was at the helm. I resent having spent money on those issues because they led nowhere. DC should at least issue vouchers for cash towards another title or TPB to compensate readers.

This is one of the those cases where anybody + Jim Lee will be a success, but Grant Morrison + anybody not Jim Lee probably won't. Look how well Gen13 and Stormwatch did.

But Gen 13 and Stormwatch didn't have Grant Morrison. They could have gotten anybody from Joel Gomez to Shane Davis to draw Wildcats, and with Morrison at the helm, it would have sold.
