View Full Version : Your Dream X-Artist... with a catch
Hakael
03-16-2008, 01:18 AM
Pick some artists you'd like to see on the X-Books, but here's the catch... they can't be past X-Artists. This is to see who you'd like brought in as new blood for everyones favorite mutants. If you have a specific book you'd like to see a certain artist on, feel free to name it.
Also, try to post a sample of some sort if its available.
Here's some of mine:
artist: Stefano Caselli (Avengers: The Initiative, Civil War YA/Runaways)
target book: Uncanny X-Men
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/6097/vavengersinitiaticcv4.jpg
artist: Alex Maleev (Civil War: The Confession, Daredevil)
target book: X-Factor

artist: Ryan Ottley (Invincible)
target book: Young X-Men

It'll never be done, because I doubt he'll ever have mainstream success. Still, it's a dream:

Artist: ADRIAN ALPHONA
You know him from: RUNAWAYS
Target book: ASTONISHING X-MEN
Why?: He's got the class of a flagship artist and manages to not only make pretty faces, but fantastic backgrounds and small little details that brings you into this new world that Adrian Alphona built.
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/1011/runaways1ep7.jpg
Artist: Daniel Acuna
You know him from: UNCLE SAM AND THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS, OUTSIDERS (Covers)
Target book: X-FACTOR
Why?: He's got the elegance and noirish quality for an investigative firm, the flash of an action artist, and the funny faces Monet would make when Rictor 'accidentally' walks in on her naked again.

Artist: KARL KERSCHL
You know him from: TEEN TITANS: YEAR ONE
Target book: YOUNG X-MEN
Why?: The youth book, more than any other book, needs life. It can't be ordinary and it can't be plain. Kerschl is stylized, hilarious (OMG Aqualad speaks to me!), and just overall really talented.

I was going to say that Ed Benes would be hot on an X-Book. (Perferably one with Jean!!) But I think he's done some issue before (not as a regular artist - but maybe a one-shot or something).
Hotness:

From those already mentioned:
Stefano Caselli (who's quickly becoming one of my favorites)
book: Young X-Men
Ryan Ottley (though I never want him to leave my precious Invincible)
book: Young X-Men, Uncanny maybe
Karl Kerschl (would have made a great rotate artist with Skottie Young for New X-Men)
book: Young X-Men
Steve McNiven
book: Uncanny X-Men
I'd like to throw in Todd Nauck, again for Young X-Men.
These days I tend to be drawn towards the more stylized art that tends to work best in books with younger cast.

Adam Warren:
Book: Young X-Men
http://image.comicvine.com/uploads/item/8000/7058/2084-adam-warren_400.jpg
Why: Because he brings a youthful energy to his works. Also even despite the look of his work the guy knows how to do sequential art like we know how to be sarcastic.
Paco Madina:
Book: X-Factor
http://image.comicvine.com/uploads/item/7000/6737/173648-paco-medina_400.jpg
Why: Because he does competent work, and again can do sequential art rather well. His technique is better than his style I'll admit, but I like his style to. It's kind of inbetween cheery and moderate.
Ed Benes
Book: X-Force
http://image.comicvine.com/uploads/item/3000/2401/90756-ed-benes_400.jpg
Why: Because ... I'd like to see Benes do something on this level of rampant bloodshed. There isn't to many ways he can do cheesecake (which I don't mind at all really. :p) but it'd force people to stop labeling him as just a cheesecake artist.

Caselli's work is beautiful.
I have no interest in The initiative.
But his art on it was Bee-yootifull.
I just looked at it in the shop and was pleased.
He should be on Uncanny.
I despise Land's porno Pixie.
He should be Exiled for that.
Like.. .. Liefield exiled.

Artist: George Perez
Book:Uncanny X-Men
Why? Perez is ofcourse the ultimate team artist. He can also do any type of epic story. If the X-Men want to be in space, he can do it, if they are fighting Sentinels, he can do it. Plus wouldn't you want to see him design new mutants?

OOoooh, good thread... I don't even think I have any new ones to add, a lot of good choices made already.
Steve McNiven or Stefano Caselli would be awesome on Uncanny,
Olivier Coipel is perfect for X-Factor.
Adrian Alphona or Stefano Caselli would work on Astonishing.
Karl Kerschl or Stefano Caselli for Young X-Men.
Steve McNiven or Olivier Coipel for X-Force.

I like Karl Kerschl's work myself, but if he were to be on an X-Book I would rather he not use the style he's using with Teen Titans: Year One, just because I would prefer to keep that book its own animal, unique. He did an issue of the Deadpool solo way back that wasn't bad, though his take on Siryn was a bit frumpy.
Adrian Alphona would be an inspired choice, but he seems to have fallen off the Earth. He was announced for Spidey loves Mary Jane, but that was back during the summer and who knows when it'll ever get off the ground. Anyone know if he's working on anything now? Acuna is also solid, though for X-Factor I would probably choose somebody a bit more gritty, like Maleev or David Aja.
Pia Guerra was posted already with a suggestion for First Class, which is a great book in and of itself, but one I don't read. I think she would be awesome for X-Men: Legacy myself.
Great choices everyone!

Artist: Bryan Hitch
Title: Uncanny X-Men
Why: Because it would be damn epic, very facially based on a book packed with characters that everyone knows and loves, I would've picked Astonishing but the tone Hitch sets doesn't seem wrong. It would also force him to draw their costumes as opposed to his typical costume design which is starting to wear thin.
Artist: Pasqual Ferry
Title: Young X-Men
Why: Well, I don't know how I feel about his non-cosmic art but nonetheless he has this heavy stylised art that would seem right, it's kind of bright and colourful perfect for a younger X-Men book.
Artist: Cary Nord
Title: Cable
Why: His facework and individuals just look perfect to me, but I can't imagine him on a team book, thus something like this would be perfect I think.
Artist: Stefano Caselli
Title: Ultimate X-Men
Why: Brighter, kind of more upbeat art, cartoony but not so that it takes away from action or more serious scenes, all the reasons named. I always imagined him in UXM though because they are still teens (ala the Initiative) and this is the main X-title I read.
Hakael
03-16-2008, 05:50 PM
Not a big fan of Hitch myself, but some of his work on the Ultimates was impressive. Hasn't he had a stint on X-Men though? or am I imagining things?
Spot on with Ferry and Nord though.

I'm not a big fan of Warren's to be honest, even though he's a fellow New Hampshire native. The art is very standard manga, and doesn't really even compete with the likes of Kubo or Kishimoto on that stage.

There are quite a few artists i would like to see work on X-Titles, a lot of whom have already been mentioned... Like Alex Maleev, Adrian Alphona, Daniel Acuna, David Aja, Steve McNiven, Bryan Hitch, Nic Klein and Gabrielle Del'Otto.
One artist that hasn't been mentioned is Timothy Green III, he did the art for the Annihilation Conquest: Star-Lord mini-series (which was awesome). Here are some examples:-

Larry Stroman is better, so start buying X-Factor with issue #33.
Stroman is the one of thereasons I'm cutting the book from my pull-list, right after the current arc.

Star Lord was indeed, awesome. Green II worked well on that series, I'm curious to see what his pencils would look like with some more contrast... he draws a mean Rocket Raccoon though... and thats what counts.

I'd love to see a nice run on an X-book by Colleen Doran! I know she's done an issue or two of X-Men related stuff here and there (she recently posted some awesome art she did for a Mutant X annual on her website), but I want to see what she could do on a main book. I'd put her on Ellis' Astonishing in a heartbeat. She brings such wonderful emotion to all her character's faces (and she knows how to draw hot guys too). :)

David Lloyd would be cool on X-factor I think.

I'm not sure about his speed, but I love his style.
Cameron Stewart! He did this awesome Quitely Cyclops. I know it's sort of a clash of styles, but it would have been so great to see Cameron filling in for Quitely during New X-Men under Morrison.

A lot of the folk in the DMaX (& other draw threads) are kickass--at least in profile shots (not sure about sequential storytelling dynamics)--I think a story (perhaps a one-shot or pilot) by a few of those participants would be worthwhile.
I'd pick it up.

Thats awesome, I really like his style. But I'd lose the sleeves at DP's wrist, lol I don't know why that annoys me when you see those lil sleeve things on characters. But what the fuck do I know? I can't draw lol. But yeah, Ramos would kick ass on DP, his style suits the character.
the fact it contains colour other than black obviously flashed past your spector

Not gonna post samples since many names have already been mentioned.
Uncanny- Should have the "hot" artist. McGuiness, Campbell, Benes, or I would have loved a lengthy run by the great Mike Wieringo :( R.I.P
Astonishing- Should be the "Big Name" artist. Travis Charest, Adam Hughes, J.G.Jones, Alex Ross
Legacy- Keep the rotating artist for flashback, someone good with conversation and face. Mike Deodato, Ivan Reis, Gary Frank, Barry Kitson.
X-Factor- Very Stylistic. Alphona, Noto, Pat Gleason, Acuna.
X-Force- Someone dark, gritty. Doug Mahnke, Dan Brereton, Dave Finch, Aja.
Young- Someone who can draw young people:rolleyes: duh (why doesn't Marvel get that?). Todd Nauk, Kerschel, Francis Manupal, pascual Ferry
I can find samples of any of these if needed. Sorry for any misspellings. That was fun!

I also like upcoming She-Hulk artist Vincenzo Cucca but his site was hard to navigate and its a studio site so I don't really know which pieces are his.
Anyway, I looked through the different Chesterquest winners blogs and I really fell in love with these two. I'd love to see more from Sara, but I really like her style and I am entranced by Matt's art. Its just amazing. It really comes to life.

while I don't usually play the role of necromancer, this thread deserves to LIVE.
REBOOT!
Same rules apply:
Pick some artists you'd like to see on the X-Books, but here's the catch... they can't be past X-Artists. This is to see who you'd like brought in as new blood for everyones favorite mutants. If you have a specific book you'd like to see a certain artist on, feel free to name it.
Also, try to post a sample of some sort if its available.

Maybe Ed McGuinness.

artist: Ryan Ottley (Invincible)
You may borrow Ottley, as long as he doesn't have to leave Invincible.
Artist: Bryan Hitch
I think it's been said here, but Hitch was an X-Factor fill-in during the 90's.
ARTIST: Mike Mignola
Mignola used to do X-covers back in the 90's. He even did an issue of X-Force with Liefeld.
sienkiewicz co created new mutants. if you haven't read the bear issues you've missed out.
What do you mean "co-create"? Bob McLeod created them with Claremont- it says so in the credits of the original run. Sienkiewicz illustrated the first appearance of Warlock, if that is what you meant.
And the bear issues were awesome  .
New Xmen: Ken Lashley
Uncanny Xmen: Art Adams *drools*
Ken Lashley was the regular Excalibur artist for a while.
Art Adams drew the Longshot mini, Uncanny (Annual), New Mutants, and Generation X.

He would... but wasn't he on X-Force in the 1990s?
And he drew the Angel mini.
Does NYX count as an X-book? Because Josh Middleton would be my first choice for the Young book. If not, then I elect Gabe Bridwell (http://www.gabebridwell.com):
http://www.gabebridwell.com/img/gallery/nc/covers/NC18Cvr_Color.jpg
And also, I would love to have Duncan Rouleou back (He did X-Factor in the 90's), as he has improved greatly. But he's off-topic. So strike that opinion.

For me, it would be Steven Butler (Silver Sable & The Wild Pack, Ultraforce, Sonic The Hedgehod, Archie Comics) for Uncanny X-Men. He's extremely versatile--ranging from traditional '90s Marvel-style superhero to very cartoony. Arrived at Marvel roughly around the same time as Mark Bagley and his work was somewhat comparable then...

The guy/girl who drew the last sample, yes. Everyone else, I'm not sure. The first guy has that terrible generic, lazy anime look that looks sweet on the television screen but not so much in comics. The second guy/girl just did a cover, so he's a maybe (it's hard to get a feel for sequentials with just a pin up). The third would actually be pretty sweet, without the terrible over-use of the Photoshop gradient tool and the empty backgrounds that draw attention to themselves.
Still, Christina Strain came from Udon and she is amazing, so I know they have talent there.
