View Full Version : DAZZLER WEEK: Dazzler Set to Join the Uncanny X-Men in UXM #501

Hi-Fi
03-15-2008, 02:10 PM
Dazzler will be back in "Uncanny X-Men" #501, as the "mutant madonna," discovering a "late career as a mutant entertainer in San Francisco. We're building a team where it's not very team based, but more ensemble based."

"On CBR, there's a thread that just exploded," McCann thought.

Brubaker said before at a comic con that he was interested in using her and Jim McCann confirmed on the CBR Dazzler thread that Dazzler would be back in a core X-book this summer--it's no joke :p

First the Essential:Dazzler on Aug 9, 2007 (my b-day!) and now Dazzler returns to the fold in Aug '08? Very cool :D

Its caps lock FAIL. Every other character in the history of Marvel comics is getting resurrected right and left and the character who actually HAS the power to come back to life is being sat on by Joe Q because he's afraid if Jean comes back she'll outshine his "precious."

I theorized that Nightcrawler may have pulled the car over and shagged Ali when he "took her to the airport" back prior to her first X-Men appearances prior to the Dark Phoenix Saga. Maybe Kurt's just going to show the Dazzler some more acrobatic ability in the sack?

I'm doubting on Wolverine. Even more so that Colossus would give Ms. Blaire a "steely Dan".

Angel is the leading candidate for Dazzler chew toy.

From a article at Wizard Entertainment:

When prodded by Dazzler mega-fan McCann, Fraction also revealed that the light-shooting singer will appear in the book as early is issue 501. “She’s discovered a late career as a mutant entertainer in San Francisco and has quite a colossal following out there,” said Fraction. “We’re building the book where it’s not necessarily team-based. It’s ensemble-based. And Ed and I are trading arcs, so it’s co-plotted, but then each of us script. I’m doing my books and he’s doing his. But we’re going to rotate around who we want. Different casts will come and go, but the idea is that everyone is kind of coming out to San Francisco. So Dazzler will be around for a few issues. I’m a big fan of the Claremont/Sienkiewicz New Mutants issues, so any time any of those characters show it, it’s probably one of my scripts. I’m like, ‘No, no! It’s great! It’s Karma! Get it? Karma!’”

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but...

Dazzler will be back in "Uncanny X-Men" #501, as the "mutant madonna," discovering a "late career as a mutant entertainer in San Francisco. We're building a team where it's not very team based, but more ensemble based."

Isn't this the exact same plot Claremont was running with on New Excalibur - only using the far more likely 'attempting a relaunch in the UK' angle?

The difference here, of course, is it might be followed through with better.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but...Isn't this the exact same plot Claremont was running with on New Excalibur - only using the far more likely 'attempting a relaunch in the UK' angle?

I thought Claremont's Dazzler was this person with a soul as black as midnight and is suffering through something. Then we get Pink and her grrlfriends and nothing is touched upon.

The Uncanny stuff sounds interesting though.

From a article at Wizard Entertainment:

So Dazzler will be around for a few issues.

I wonder if she's going to go with the X-team on any missions, or if they're just going to have her show up, sing some songs, and shoots lasers around the room.

The difference here, of course, is it might be followed through with better.

The thing is--Claremont never really indicated exactly what he was doing. Dazzler just showed up in the UK singing in her old get-up and we were all left to deduce/assume what happened (and the first issue indicated that the people in the bar weren't too hot on her--no duh if she's performing to a punk-ish crowd--if she's a dance artist throw her in a gay bar, Claremont! ). Nothing in the entire NEX 2 year run every even hinted at why she was performing in the UK. For all that we know from that run we could just as well assume she all of a sudden wanted to live in the UK. And if she was trying to revive her singing career she quickly forgot it to join a team of superheroes, most of whom she barely knew

What Daithi said. CC said that Dazzler was all noir and gloom. It was just his excuse to butch her up and attack her fabulosity!

Jim McCann promised she will join, and I am fully confident that she is joining. And now -- her army of gay men will feature!

Meh. Hopefully, it's a minor role. Never been a big Dazzler fan. She seems to whiney and co-dependent most of the time to me. Feel free to argue, but I that's just my opinion.

You've obviously not read her solo series.

OMG, I'm so excited for #501, especially now that I know it'll be Fraction using her and probably not Brubaker! That is a big sigh of relief. I seriously did not want him screwing over another one of my favorite characters.

I was rather and specifically referring to moments of shameless character abuse.

I think it's hilarious that if Dazzler were truly to come to San Francisco, her NEX look would be more in fashion than anything remotely resembling Kylie Minogue...
The stylish women of the city aren't divas...they're more fashion bohemian.
Sure, SF's got a huge gay population and whatnot, but if you're looking for sugar-pop "fabulous", San Francisco's not it.
You'd be looking desperately for Los Angeles.

Also, just pointing out the only dames who dress like Kylie in town are drag queens. ;)

Yeah, SF is a 'dress casual' kinda town. The divalicious performers here are drag queens.... otherwise, not so much. I see a lot more Ultimate Dazzler types in clubs than Silver Lame ones...... unless the performer is wearin' a lot of foundation and rockin' a tuck.

Really, SF's not a 'Glam Town'.... anyone used to the club scenes in New York or LA who comes here comments there's really no dressing up in 'Frisco. We're a very dress casual/come as you are kinda place.

I don't really think it's a forced fit, really. I think she works WAY better in San Francisco than NYC or LA (you're right, she would just get way too strung out on LA attitude and NYC takes itself WAY too seriously). San Francisco is a nice fit in that it's all about being fun, talented, and more than a little tongue in cheek. Anyone who builds a career out of a disco schtick on rollerskates (!) is bound to have a built in audience here.
The only place I could think of that would be a better fit is London, but sadly, that went nowhere quick. Hopefully, SF'll be much more kind to her. And it sounds like it will!

You're missing out on some funny stuff. The fact that she paired up Dazzler and Deadpool made my attention swing to her. I didn't think it would work, but, strangely enough, it was perfection. I don't know about hit records. You never hear anything from Kylie on U.S. radio's anymore, and Madonna usually get's about one single on the radio, and then it quickly fizzles into nothingness. Probably her last big hit was the Music album, although she had a few good songs over the last few years, none were very radio friendly, or long lasting appeal.

Although, with her working with Timbaland, and his very club friendly style that's taking America by storm now, her new album may be just what Madge needs.

In the scope of hit records, Kylie has been getting them worldwide since the late 80s. Her American career is an after thought, but her records SELL worldwide. She hasn't released a record in the US and actually promoted it since - maybe - "Body Language", which was several years ago and her song "Slow" managed to make the US chart even if it wasn't huge. Her current album hasn't been released here, but worldwide it has three top 10 hits already.

And Madonna's last big US hit was off her last album. "Hung Up" was a top 10 hit and it - and the other singles - were even bigger outside the US. And with her new single out now, she could have another huge hit on her hands in the US and everywhere else.

And regardless of the possible success or failure of Kylie's "All I See" and Madonna's "4 Minutes", they present a successful model for Dazz to emulate, more so than who? What other women are out there right now? Dazzler isn't going to get comparisons to flat out R&B singers and there are currently no female rock singers anymore relevant than Kylie or Madonna. Debbie Harry and Shirley Manson are fabulous, but equally glam and less successful than either previous woman. That girl from Paramore? Or GENDERSWAP like with Pete Wentz Ultimate Dazzler.

So sorry to rain on your parade Jester. Thanks for being rude though. As I said before, I like some top 10 stuff, but not a lot of it. Honestly, I don't know two sheets about Kylie's music. It's not a genre I enjoy and I'm guessing I wouldn't like it, but that's not how I'd decide if she was a good artist anyhow. I consider someone who is multi-talented in singing, dancing or designing their own videos, writing his or her own music. That's what's important in my mind as to if the artist is good. If it's produced shlop then no, so perhaps you can enlighten me on Kylie's abilities of music production without being snarky for once.

Kylie's actually written or co-written a large number of her songs. The only time I can recall that she completely wrote lyrics, music, and produced a track was off her Impossible Princess album which (you may find hard to believe) was very unlike anything she had made before and like nothing she's made since--darker lyrics and next to no "glam." It was also the lowest selling record of her career, but ended becoming one of her most critically acclaimed (years later after everyone had initially bashed it, ironically).

Her most successful album to date is "Fever" (of which the insanely popular song "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" was on). It was more dance/electro inspired and was critically and commercially hailed upon release. It had a much more "Dazzler" esque vibe to it.

Most of the music she created for follow-up album "Body Language" was electro-ish tracks with a slight r&b tinge to them. The album didn't take off although, much like Impossible Princess, it's been critically hailed years after its release (Rolling Stone mag called it "the album Madonna should have done."). It was released in 2003/2004 and was actually ahead of its time, with some of today's music released by popular artists having a very similar sound to it.

Her album X already has 3 top 10 singles (as Jester mentioned) and it has not yet been released in the US. However within the one week it was on US iTunes it climbed up to the 43rd top albums position--on the back of no promo whatsoever.

Because no one knows who Princess Superstar is?

Because "Mutant Madonna" is really nothing more than a fun PR angle?

Because that distinction would set Dazzler apart from the other X-Men -- not to mention other MU superheroes -- rather than just make her "Generic Superhero v. 10192 who happens to sing?"

Because when making her "Generic Superhero v. 10192 who happens to sing" it resulted in character failure for several years and canned one title?

Well, I wasn't saying that she should BE Princess Superstar, actually.
And yes, I understand WHY they would say that she's the "mutant madonna."
But making her a generic "glam diva" is about the same thing as making her the generic "superhero that sings".
She's more of Princess Superstar because she's always been on the indie/cult edges rather than being someone who sells out Wimbley. The one, count em, ONE time she's performed before a huge audience, she was the opening act.
Making her all about success now is not going to make her a more interesting character.

I think it boils down to more of a stylistically and musically basing than a "so and so is more/less popular/successful, they should base Dazzler off her." Stylistically and musically you can't get any closer to Dazzler, in my mind, than Kylie or Madonna. You can argue voices, range, age, credibility, popularity, etc, etc all the live long day--those are the closest real-world counterparts you'll get to Dazz (and vice versa) when it comes to style and music.

She's more of Princess Superstar because she's always been on the indie/cult edges rather than being someone who sells out Wimbley. The one, count em, ONE time she's performed before a huge audience, she was the opening act.
Making her all about success now is not going to make her a more interesting character.

--Dazz

Don't play canon wars. I'm talking about marketable/effective characterization.

We saw what happened when Dazzler's character MO was all "I'm so hated and feared and hate myself" blah blah blah. What did it do for the character?

Well, we got:

Two, TWO, stories that were precursors to the "critically acclaimed" Storm: The Arena.

Lila Cheney not-so-fly girl.

"Oh, dumb silly me!"

Her secret desire to be a bag lady so she could manage expectations.

Mojoworld Rebllll.

And then, of course, the very noir "edgy" Ali just like every noir "edgy" superhero ever. But instead of training in the Danger Room or reading Proust, she'd sing in her spare time.

That's not character diversity. Hell, it's not even a character M.O. Dazzler needs to be reworked, and reworking her as a glam gay/mutant subculture sensation who has lofty self/societal ambitions? SENSE. Lots of it.

"Let's hang around and do good, and sometimes I'll sing because that's my character hook since the inception?" Doesn't work. Hey -- we saw what we got with Dazzler when the singing was dropped altogether: Mojoworld. Where she was "Longshot's Wife."

She's the Dazzler. Not the Broodler the Sulkler or the ActivistCounterCulturaler. She's the Dazzler and she dazzles.

"You're going to be okay, Ms. Alison Blaire!"

I can certainly understand why some people would see her that way. There are more times than not I'm listening to Kylie and thinking...yeah...this is Dazzler.
And style-wise, I think Kylie is certainly a Dazzler fit.
(I'll leave Madonna out...she's not exactly fresh anymore in my mind.)

But, personally, I think of Dazzler as not quite as spectacle oriented as Kylie and Madonna, and a little more music based rather than entertainment based. "Divas" focus more on spectacle, whereas I've always seen Dazzler focus more on music. Yeah, she's a dancer and has the skates and light show and all, but she's always performing on pretty much bare stages in the dreaded "indie/underground" clubs (even her Carnegie hall appearance was pretty spectacle-less) or small dance clubs with actual bands.

Plus, I find her pretty schticky. And that's okay, to me. Even in her first appearance, she was already retro. You could certainly look at her ironically in that light, and if her entire persona is built upon being tongue-in-cheek (as I see her), she's not so much an earnestly glam performer as a take on glam.

But, ultimately, it's a good thing for all of us that we can make her be whatever we want in our minds. None of us are really ever going to "hear" Dazzler. Because I'm the devil and like indie music, she is more Princess Superstar/MIA/Peaches/Old School Blondie than anything else, whereas others, as is the fun of it, could see her as Madonna, Barbara Streisand, Janet Jackson, Tom Jones, or anybody.

You can't just brush over her lights. She is the Dazzler. She has lightshows that compliment - or upstage - her music.

The whole character lives in spectacle. Her lightshows set her apart. She's nothing if not spectacle.

You want the indie grunge music with no spectacle? To Lila Cheney with you.

Dazzler should be the mutant Aimee Mann. Or Stevie Nicks! Or maybe Regina Spektor? Or any other singer I love? I do like Kyle and Madonna. But they're not that special to me.

I think Dazzler should not be an unknown indie act, but rather close to being a huge pop/disco star so she would work as a bridge between humans and mutants.

If Princess Superstar was an alien the headlines would not be "Princess Superstar is an alien!" but rather "Who the eff is Princess Superstar?"

Piffle. I stick with Dazzler.
Her lights may upstage her music, but it always has been music first with her. Even before she had the lights.

See for me the lights were always a big part of Dazzler's stage/music persona because she used them to set her apart from all the others. Her "built in" lightshows, rollerskates, and silver get-up were her way of making her stage show distinctive. If it was only about the music then why would she even bother creating a lightshow to accompany her singing? It was there to "dazzle" people--to put on a hell of a performance/show. Her voice was always said to be great and pure--but the captions always talked about the performance aspect of her as well. IMHO she's just as much a performer as she is a musician.

No doubt about that, honestly.
I'm sure she was vying for distinction, but every performer that's not crunchy granola uses lights and has something of a stage show. Dazzler is, of course, a musician devoted to dance and feel-good music, so naturally something other than standing at a microphone with a guitar went along with her act. Luckily, her powers were to make light shows! I just don't think she's on the strapped to a disco-ball crucifix end of spectacle. She's never even had back-up dancers!
It's not *only* about the music, but I believe she always puts that before anything else.

No. Dazzler: The Movie. It was about her light powers.

She owns her mutant gift.

She's not hiding it and trying to focus on the music.

The lights are an intrinsic element of the "Dazzler" stage persona. And that's what it is. "Dazzler." Dazzler dazzles.

Alison Blaire sings.

She isn't Alison Blaire. She is Dazzler.

I could definately see her as an old school Debbie Harry..... but a Debbie Harry who was still waiting tables at Max's Kansas City 'cause her career hasn't launched into the stratosphere yet.

I like to read about Dazzler being an 'up and comer', someone trying to land that major label deal than the been-there-done-that top 40 sensation that's on everyone's lips around the world. She should still be striving, IMHO. That was part of the fun of her original series, and I think the dynamic works well.

lol, I don't think anyone's been arguing that she "has" to be either of them--just arguing why they feel the comparison is appropriate in the first place since some posters indicated they didn't understand why the two were compared to Dazzler or thought Dazzler was an indie/guitar-toting/coffee house artist.

Pretty sure he's joking--he's expressed before how much he loves Marvel's 80's solo heroines. And he's the only reason we got Dazzler in Ultimate or House of M (and according to what I've heard, wanted her for New Avengers)

besides, even if he's not joking I'm SURE he's referring to Uncanny X-Men or New Excalibur Dazzler sucking :p ;)
