Some things have the possibility of greatness; some things end up having had the possibility of greatness. This is one of those things.
52 was cool, but I opted out of buying Countdown for budgetary reasons. From what I've read about the book, I'm glad I didn't pick it up. The best thing I've heard about it, in all honesty, is "this issue wasn't as bad as the last one," and, as much as that does demonstrate improvement, that doesn't really cut it in my book. And oh my goodness, a years worth of $3 weekly comics that eventually don't even lead into what you said they would? And that decision was due to the fact that nobody liked them? Shudder!!! (I've heard someone here eloquently say Ambush Bug was the reason for the difference, and I would agree to the point that I bet Giffen in general made a big difference...(I'm saying the man knows storytelling, but anyway...))
Grant Morrison is the light at the end of this tunnel, and my point is, let the man tell his story. Don;t let editorial dictate the plot points, dialogue, or story - just let the man tell his story.
And by Grant Morrison, I mean Invisibles / Arkham Asylum / Animal Man / Kill Your Boyfriend Flex Mentallo / Aztek (ESPECIALLY) / JLA (ESPECIALLY) / New X-Men / Earth 2 / Sea Guy...this amazing writer who has created great things, including dense portions of the DCU already!!!
I am looking forward to Final Crisis very much, and, I don't know, I'm drunk right now and this is my little rant haha (don't worry, kiddies - I'm over 21 and we had a designated driver!)
Point is: Grant Morrison (and JG Jones!!!) + the entire DC Universe = an amazing opportunity to plant some seeds that grow into mighty trees!!! (Especially with Geoff Johns as copilot/future pilot!!!)
Let the man tell his story. That;s all.
