View Full Version : Interested in beginning JLA...
Hey everyone,
I've read mainly Vertigo books and Batman but there are references to JLA here and there and it seems like a lot of people are interested in it so it must be half way good - can you read it through TPB's? If so, where do I start? How many are there? Etc... and finally, is there anything I need to know/read before starting JLA? I hate starting things without having decent background...

If you were more of a Vertigo fan prior to this, Grant Morrison's first couple JLA TPBs should probably be to your liking. I would recommend JLA: Earth 2 as the best of the bunch. JLA: New World Order is also a fun, quick read.
And, of course, Darwyn Cooke's DC: New Frontier is one of the best JLA origin stories I've ever read. A animated movie adaption just came out a month or so ago, but I'd recommend reading the comic first.

Well...this would not be a good time to start reading JLA, but if you must, pick up the hardcover of The Tornado's Path by Brad Meltzer and Ed Benes(by far the highlight of the current incarnation of the Justice League). Or if you want to read REALLY good JLA stories, I would recommend JLA: Rock of Ages(my personal favorite), Tower of Babel and Divided We Fall.
But if you MUST start reading this incarnation, pick up with Issue #20, as I'm pretty sure it's a standalone issue and is bound to at least look pretty.

It is indeed a dire time to be a fan of the JLA.
I'd say pick up the Morrison run, and maybe the Waid run that followed it (I didn't like it, but I can see how it is not bad, just not my cup of thee). And leave it at that. Stay a million miles away from the current book, even the Metzler issues. It is simply awful.
Maybe try the Showcase reprints.
